1.8T Valve Cover Gasket DIY | Cam Chain Tensioner / Half Moon

  • We show you how to replace a valve cover gasket and chain tensioner seal on VW/Audi 1.8t engines. While this video was shot on a 225hp 01 Audi TT, this job would be very similar on VW GTI, Jetta, Beetle, and Audi TT 180hp models. The main difference you would expect to see is related to the boost pipe and vacuum valve assemble on top of the valve cover.
    VW and Audi 1.8t Engine oil leaks very often come from either the valve cover gasket or chain tensioner seal. When doing this job you should do both of these at the same time.

      My question is, can you get that tensioner out, and replace it along with the chain without having to take the cams out. and what the service interval for the chain is. I know my car has been through at least a coupld of timing belts, but i don't think the chain has ever been replaced.

    This is a superb video for this 1.8T job. I reeeeaaally wish I had had this video pop-up in my recommendations few days ago, though, as I have a 2003 A4 with the same engine - but the orientation is different - and I just changed the rocker cover gasket on it but my manual doesn’t tell me to change the cam chain tensioner gasket ag the same time as well. I didn’t know about that special tool, either, and it’s only about a fiver! Well, it looks like I’m buying more parts and a new tool and doing the whole job again! Thank you so much for sharing this! Great work, and very much appreciated by me! 🙏 Stay safe and well!

    Just did this yesterday, this video was invaluable! That tensioner gasket was fidgety for sure. How bad was my old gasket? There was an inch and a half of oil covering each spark plug, I couldn't even see them! Had to suck it out with a turkey baster, now I have to by a new one for the kitchen! :)

      I assure you, simple it is not. Most mechanics remove one camshaft to clean where the half moon goes and you have to put it the exact same spot for engine timing and also torque the camshaft bolts in the correct sequence...

    I just did this job- two things to note
    1. If the chain isn't slackening don't break the tool, take it off and rotate the engine to tdc. Get someone to watch for the notch on the flywheel while you turn the crankshaft. Try again
    2. If your tool like mine (laser) doesn't actually bottom out, don't go all the way down as it actually makes the chain tighter

    I was unable to get my chain tensioner loose while cranking down. It started to get loose but then got tight again after bottoming out in the tool. Ultimately I didn’t replace the half moon and small gasket. I replaced the valve cover gasket but after test driving once completed it still leaked. So I know it’s leaking from the half moon and chain tensioner gasket. So I will be going back in to redo it. Does the engine half to be at TDC to do this loosening of the chain tensioner? Does it matter? I am again going to go through the entire process getting back in and replacing the new gasket I just replaced along with trying to loosen the chain tenSioner with the special tool. This video was great by the way. Thank you.

      You use the brake cleaner with the plugs still in place then blow out with compressed air (into a rag) or sick rag/paper towel into plug recess to soak up liquid or use turkey baster as someone else suggested. Doesn't matter if some small amount of cleaner drains into cylinder as it will be burned/blown out.

    I am wondering if you or anyone else might be able to answer my question regarding this engine... My 2001 1.8T was never, NEVER, EVER, starting from the first crank while the engine was warm... Cold start?! No issues at all, but hot start... Damn, it never ever started, I could have crank it forever, it was never starting. I always was cranking it up for a split of a second, then switch the key back off, than cranking it again, it was starting with no sweat. So, let me recap; cold start was fine, always, hot start... No, not from the first try (switch key on, and crank the fuck out of it), I always had to turn and crank 2 times to get my car started.
    I've changed everything, water temperature sensor, crankshaft sensor, there was another sensor down at the engine, don't remember exactly... But I've changed everything, new coil packs, new battery, new MAF sensor, new air filter, new fuel filter... I just couldn't get it fixed. No check engine light, nothing on VCDS.
    Any thoughts?!

    • @83ky
      @83ky 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend to do so, it is not likely to jump a tooth but it is not a nice feeling if the intake cam is just on the edge of turning around and slips down and you aren't sure anymore if it is in time anymore. There are marks on the cams that align with the cam cap marks at TDC also. I usually put a paint dab on the chain in relation to those marks so it very easy to double check at the end.
