I just retired as a High School Auto Shop teacher, for years I would show several Scotty Kilmer videos a week to keep my students grounded. They won't believe me.....but would listen to Scotty! After a year in my class Scotty's name and opinion would always be used and relied on. Heck, I even started sounding like Scotty in my lectures! No shame in my game. We appreciate you Mr. Kilmer!
Scotty, during COVID, I watched your videos. You single handedly gave me the confidence to work on my own vehicles and not get ripped off anymore. Ive since done spark plug and wires, rotors, pads, calipers, cv axle, oil chages, transmission fluid changes, replaced starters, and alternators you name it. All because of you and your videos!
@Cybersawz Thanks, man! Yes, it's such an awesome feeling working on my own cars and knowing im doing it right snd saving a ton of $$ There is a great pride too, knowing my vehicle is still on the road at 227k miles because of all the work I put into it. Cheers, brotha !
@russriley3005 Hey brotha! I have, actually! Just a few weeks ago, I did a valve cover gasket, spark plugs, and throttle body cleaning for one of my best friends. Gotta spread the wealth, and I enjoy working on cars now. Cheers, brother!
Did you drain the transmission and run the engine or drive it for an hour, then drain it again? How many times? I've changed the spark plugs and the ignition coils on a Toyota 4 cylinder, changed the starter, and drained the power steering fluid. Now I'm going to flush the radiator for winter and put on new brakes and rotors and new full synthetic brake fluid. I'm using high performance EBC rotors and RedStuff brake pads with Redline DOT 4 fluid. Wish me luck.
Scotty, as a vehicle appraiser for a major insurance company, you are 100% correct about the planned obsolescence. It's a fortune to repair electric cars, body shops charge special rates to fix them, and the open item of what happens down the road are endless...so we are encouraged to total them if we can.
My most fervent wish, would be for consumers to demand that electric vehicles be insured by their own divisions. I'm tired of my rates going up perpetually because of the inability to keep these electric mouse traps on the road.
Thanks for sharing. I have also heard they will quote the cost of a battery repair the same as a brand new car. Insurance should be paying up or buying a new car.
This is so true. I'm also a vehicle appraiser, and I just totaled a 23 Rav4 prime today with 5505 miles because the hybrid system got damaged, and it cost a fortune.
@sommebuddy I don't want to say the name of the company, but it's one of the major auto insurers in the country. I totaled a cadillac lyriq with 7k miles a few weeks ago. It was an economic total, though, because we couldn't get parts for the car. GM didn't have spare parts that we could purchase for repairs. I will say that electric and hybrid cars total easy because they cost so much to repair.

I worked at KHOU in Houston when Scotty was our automotive expert. I talked with Scotty often and he was the same then as he is in these videos today - blatantly honest. @@darrelhoyt4205 *need?* As far as that goes you don't need the internet your using now. Some how people like myself lived a fine life before the internet, lol. When I look at the food in my kitchen and the water that comes out of the faucet and the shelter I'm standing in wearing clothes. then I think of the word need.
Your interesting channel is one of many that has taught me some basic auto repairs. I had no clue about fixing anything but learned enough to replace an alternator and starter; this was when I didn't even know there were metric and imperial tools let alone how engines worked. Would watch videos then hop on bicycle to buy tools. Took hours and resulted in many errors, but I did it. So yes, thank you for all your knowledge that you so generously share with viewers. I just bought my first Toyota (last week), and am excited to learn about my 2009 Corolla.
I’m a 70 year old car guy. I’ve spent a lifetime in auto service and sales. I trust Scotty more than any other car person on TH-cam. My wife and I are just ending our retirement dream of traveling the country for 4 years in a RV bus. Upon getting back into a sticks and bricks home we will be purchasing a new Camry (hybrid) and a Frontier mostly based on Scotty’s reviews. Keep up the good work and God bless. Charlie Mattson
Avoid the hybrid; battery fails in 5-7 years and $$$$$. Working for Adesa, I lost count how many Nissans came in with blown head gaskets, puffing white noxious clouds out the tailpipe... I guess if you baby it all the time it'll be fine but I stay with Toyota and Honda if I want reliability.
Wait for the 2026 Camry so they can work out the bugs like they had on the first year 18 model. Might even have a TRD Camry by then. That's what I'm waiting for. If it doesn't drop, I'm going to get the 21 Avalon TRD.
@@jimmio3727 All of the 2025 Camrys are Hybrids now. The Toyota EV batteries last longer than expected. Just have to do regular maintenance on the interior battery vent and filter. It's easy.
That'd be a huge battery for a hybrid. $15K is the price of some replacement EV batteries. A hybrid battery replacement should be a maximum of $8K, I've seen many doing replacements as low as $2K which is about the same as a transmission. And $220 for what? The hybrid battery isn't anything like the normal 12V your car already has.
@@Skylancer727 Thats the price here to replace the hybrid with labor. I don't know where you live. Our Canadian dollar is way lower than usa so everything costs more including delivery. If its a cheap version vehicle the average cost 5000 to 8000 just hybrid battery plus labor and tax. I looked for a ten dollar switch for my van I broke by mistake and the added shipping was $75.00 canadian from usa
Everyone is a hater. Anyone who tries to tell you they aren't a hater, is a poser. My boss had a Tesla for 4 months and sold it. He said it was an insane hassle keeping it charged, vs spending 15 mins going to the gas station.
@@dvaunt3516It just depends. In San Jose, Ca we’ve got charging stations at work and at the local eateries. I wouldn’t mind getting an EV if I had space for a 5th car. 🤔
I trust Scotty so I bought a 2024 RAV4 Adventure (gas). No CVT. No stop/start. No turbo. Direct AND port injection. Timing chain not belt. No cylinder deactivation.
You make complicated things easily understandable, thanks! I remember stand-up comedians joking about planned obsolescence in the sixties. I couldn't have imagined how big a problem this would become!
He supports those who do blow smoke from their tailpipes and give people health problems. Seriously, he is mostly just trying to defend his previous positions, and so is exaggerating and using old info.
Okay that one just doesn't make any sense. I don't know of any EVs that dies in 2 days of not being plugged in. Not to mention no power means the gas stations are out of service too. Like you can dislike them all you want, but really, there's no need to strawman them. They already suck on their own merits.
@@Skylancer727 Most gas stations have generators to keep the gas pumps working. Not to mention you can simply use a backup jerry can in seconds without even going to a gas station. Power outages are a non-issue for gas cars that's not a strawman
I believe you Scotty, you are doing good. I love your advice and information about cars, trucks or any vehicles. I trust the information you provide. You are honest in my book. Seriously
I live in florida Scotty the last two hurricane's tesla electric cars left in the garages that were flooded caught fire and burned 🔥 the garage and house to the ground . so keep telling people don't leave your eclectic car in the garage during a hurricane. thank you Scotty for all the hard work through the years and videos 📹 my mother would always tell me growing up , don't listen to people who tell you bad things , if they don't feed you or house you or put clothes on your back than whatever hey say doesn't matter my friend 😊

We didn't have Auto zone or the internet but always solved the problem and could always ask that backyard mechanic for advice and peace of mind thanks for what you do.Rod Bklyn NY.
Everybody doesn't need to buy an EV. America has choices. I've got one ICE vehicle and one EV. Both go for 350 to 400 miles on a fill-up. We go on maybe 1 or 2 vacations so not a big deal to use either vehicle. For us, 95% of our driving is local, or perhaps 100 miles round trip. We charge the EV in our garage overnight, which is very convenient and costs 30% vs gasoline. There's room for both types of vehicles, whichever "turns your crank".
Found you about 6 months ago. I really like your channel. The old lady asks everyday now “what’s Scotty got out today?”. She loves listening to you too. Keep on making content sir. Lotta people love ya out here.
😂 is that really the one thing you picked out of this. People don’t want them. At least oil companies receive subsidies for production of good that are used in products people want. I mean we give Egypt millions of dollars for people to graduate college too
I've learned so much from your vids. Don't give the idiots who comment against you. You are truly helping people learn, do, and evaluate. Thanks so much and keep them coming.
Thanks Scotty for being YOU. You help me by the last to vehicles I’ve bought. The only thing I had a problem with was the standard transmission on my 2006 Pontiac Vibe. The transmission packed in in. Don’t know why. If you have come across the transmission problem please let us know. Thanks for telling us the truth. I miss my Vibe!
Just the process of mining the minerals for those EV batteries completely destroys the local environment! Where are all you tree huggers at when it comes to THAT part? 😡
I have looked in to a DIY electric, you can buy kits in the USA that make it pretty simple. But you spend tens of thousands of dollars and end up with something that's not much more than a glorified golf cart. I do appreciate that you are not bought and paid for. Most of the car channels are just glorified commercials.
dont worry about the electric car defenders scotty. theyre only complaining so much because theyre waiting for thier overglorified toaster oven to charge!
My mom used to work for a company that made parts, mostly the circuits and all for vehicles, and EVs had terrible quality control. She would test the parts and they would fail. She would put them in the fail bin, and they came back saying they can't fail parts because they have to meet quotas. Yes, they put the bad parts in the shipments.
Thank you Scotty! My 2021 Toyota Tundra is the perfect truck for me. Changing the fluids religiously and I expect to pass it down to my grandson when I’m done with it.
It's funny. I live in Orlando and have seen many of these Tesla charging stations. I would pass two charging stations on the way to the old shop I used to run. One in the really bad part(12 charging stations) of town and one in the rich(five charging stations) part of town . The one in the ghetto would have maybe one car charging and the rich part of town would have a line waiting. It makes me laugh considering it's only a 15 minute drive from one to the other! Hahahah
There is a little restaurant that has a view of EV charging stations. It’s fun to eat and drink and watch the idiots, I mean left, I mean people waiting to charge their cars. There are gas pumps beside them, and they just whiz in and out.😂
Scotty, I have watched you for years, you sir, are a national treasure. I have never sensed that you were ever biased in reporting your findings. It is refreshing to hear real information, not biased in any way. Thanks Scotty for your great channel.
When the first gasoline cars came out in the early 1900's, there was NO gasoline sales/distribution infrastructure in place. It took decades for that to happen, and for the general popularity of the gasoline car to take hold.
Exactly. It will take decades for EVs as well. Taking longer is a good thing. Rapid growth and lack of planning are what caused the environmental disaster that EVs are now supposed to save us from, more of the same isn't going to improve things
Although the environment is wrecked more by the materials that need to be mined to make the EV’s. It’s just in someone else’s backyard. But they forget that the planet Earth is connected.
@@shakerman55 And practically all EV promoters rather quickly forget WHERE the electric power comes from that recharges their EV's, mostly, at this time, from burning of fossil fuels. Nuclear power, to me, is the answer. So much safer than in the past, and with new innovations in nuclear waste disposal techniques and practices, it's the way to go. Just my humble opinion.
Biggest difference is everyone has the opportunity to charge their vehicle at home or at work. So when Scotty says most of the charging stations are empty, it’s because 80% of EV owners charge their vehicles at home or at work. So the only time EV owners would need to charge at an EV Station is when they’re traveling. I don’t own one but did a lot of research and have many friends who own them. I trust that most of the other negatives are true. Minor accidents are easily repaired as I have several friends who own Teslas and had minor fender and door collisions.
@@robsandler1818 But the pollution caused from the material requirements to manufacture them takes more years to reap back than possible. And that doesn’t take into account where the power has to come from to “plug in at home”. It doesn’t grow on trees. And all of the people that are EV followers hate nuclear and fossil power stations.
“…WARN people about EVs” Gee, I wonder why a manufacturer won’t send him one. His pre-determined Bias is obvious. No one buying EVs? 2nd and 3rd qtr US set sales records. I am glad you got called out, you deserved it.
An electric battery just sitting there is completely inert. Unless it's on a charger or being discharged there's nothing to worry about. Even the inflated cells are completely harmless if left untouched. Plus some of these cheaper products use nickel hydride cells rather than lithium ion so they're pretty safe. It's the same type of battery Toyota uses in most of their hybrids.

Love for Scotty
My hybrid is 18 years old 2008 camry hybrid 280k miles on the original hybrid battery. I would buy another one with out a doubt @@jimmio3727
Wait for the 2026 Camry so they can work out the bugs like they had on the first year 18 model.
Might even have a TRD Camry by then.
That's what I'm waiting for.
If it doesn't drop, I'm going to get the 21 Avalon TRD.
@@jimmio3727
All of the 2025 Camrys are Hybrids now.
The Toyota EV batteries last longer than expected.
Just have to do regular maintenance on the interior battery vent and filter.
It's easy.
@@thisismagacountry1318 Thanks for your input. I was already leaning that way.
Your correct. If the battery becomes dead on a hybrid ford suv its $16,895.00 with repair compared to $220.00 a non hybrid battery. Hello from Canada
I'm migrating to Canada next month, thinking of buying my next car

Scotty be careful with those Chinese bike batteries. Many videos of batteries failing and burning down house/garage.
It shouldn't be a problem just sitting there not charging or being discharged. Even the evil pillows are fairly stable if you just don't touch them.

I have no problem with you. You tell it straight. Some people are just opinionated without knowing both sides. You are a trusted mechanic

@@robsandler1818
But the pollution caused from the material requirements to manufacture them takes more years to reap back than possible.
I love Scotty!
Well said Scotty. Taking your advise has saved me and my family thousands. Thanks
You are more honest than the people complaining
Scotty said it all!
AMPs aren't matching the power and reliability of BTU in gasoline!
If I was you Scotty I would not have those electric bikes and what not aging away in my shed,,, that's a fire hazard....
