That's good to know as a new owner of an 09 with 87k. A lot of the issues it has are not exclusive to it, and being a redesign year it's going to have its quirks. Once the recalls and concerns are taken care of it should be plenty reliable especially if you have the 1.8L engine.

@@DoyouevenTruckerBro They say the VVTi cam gear actuator can make noise on cold start for a few seconds and the repair to fix it can be expensive, also the timing chain tensioner is prone to go out on these, also prone to oil leaks on the timing cover gasket. 2009 model is the worst of Gen 10, I was looking at one to buy here in Australia but all these things have put me off getting an 09, alternator and water pump are weak in them too. they are priced high on the used market here at $12,000 Australian for a low Mileage one with 92,000 kilometers

My first car as a teenager was a Toyota Tercel, and the Corolla kind of reminds of that. It’s a sturdy, reliable car, but it seems like a young person’s first car. The Honda Civic has more edge and seems more stylish which is why I prefer it, even though the Corolla likely has the slight edge in reliability.

My first Honda was a 2019 SI, and it was the best car I ever owned. (And I’ve had a lot of cars) Sold it (retails not important) bought an 2018 civic sport coupe. It was nice, but the SI spoiled me. (I miss that car) sold it and bought a Jeep wrangler. Live the wrangler but I have a 80 mile round trip commute to work and 15 mpg doesn’t do very well for my savings account. Now I’m in the market for a used car for work only. Looking at a Corolla, but I’m afraid that I’ll wish I got another Honda. I’ve driven Toyotas, and they just don’t feel as premium as Honda. Kinda plasticy and basic on the interior. So we’ll see. Looking at 2019 Corolla SE with 50k miles for $13,500. Seems like a great buy.

Interesting video! Great information. My 2008 Honda Civic blew a head gasket and got junked at ~95K miles and I had a horrid time with it, the standard maintenance wasn't good enough it seems. I now have a 2010 Fit and I absolutely LOVE it. I first learned to drive on a beat-up 1993 manual Accord and I loved it. My mom had a Camry where the engine seized at just over 100k miles, too. Something about the engine oil system being poorly designed per the Toyota mechanic? I really liked the Matrix and wish they'd bring it back, though.

I bought my 2004 Corolla at 160k miles, and I'll admit, I've abused the hell out of that car. I've not always had the money needed to keep up with the repairs, and I finally start earning some decent money and it gave out on me. It just passed 250k miles and I'm needing to replace the engine due to rod knock. And the funny thing is that it's been so reliable the past five years I've owned it, even when I've not put in the time and effort into maintaining it, that I'm probably going to end up putting another engine in it. It's gotten me through several road trips and is surprisingly fun to drive. If I do end up doing the engine swap, I'm going to maintain it to see just how long I can keep it going, even if it means spending another 5+ years with this car!

So now I have a perfectly running engine but electrical issues. The wiring to the speed sensor must've broken somehow, because I no longer have a working instrument cluster. Currently trying to find a shop that specializes in electrical where I live because all the swap shop did is replace the speed sensor and that didn't do anything to fix the issue.

The 2.0 naturally aspirated motor and 6 speed manual transmission is definitely the most reliable way to buy a Civic. You two bought the right one 👍🏻

A good oil undercoat will go a long way to protect from rust. I live in NH and use a product known as NHOU (New Hampshire Oil Undercoat). Like any other product, people will argue to no end which is best. I’ve used the clear formula on a new F-150 before it ever saw salt and treated every year. It gets sprayed inside the panels and frame as well as coating everything else underneath. Years later, the difference is clear when compared to similar models were were obviously never treated and exposed to winter salts. If it’s an older vehicle, it will still help, but not as much since any rust that has already started will continue to cause damage, but a thorough undercoat will slow it down considerably. The shop here is reputable and will do the inside/outside treatment for about $200 if you can’t do it yourself, but the cost compared with repairing the frame or body is much more. Once a year is typically all you need, usually the fall is a good time for that.

Hope you're having a good one, Scotty! You inspired me to buy a Honda Civic SI after owning three Subarus.

I was actually looking at getting the Acura ILX with the 6-speed manual transmission. I had driven the TLX on a test drive and they were unbelievably comfortable seats.

As always with Scotty, this is an excellent video with useful information. I especially like how Scotty is factual and impartial when comparing these two outstanding vehicles. Personally, I think Scotty's car videos are the best overall- complete with a little humor.

Just recently bought a 2014 civic with 60k miles on it. It has been the best used car I have ever purchased.

I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla. The ninth generation Corolla is absolutely insane reliability. I have 319,000 miles on mine and I've had no major repairs. Just change my original alternator. No work done on AC, no work done on transmission just a freaking tank. I am about To change my at least left CV joint that is original. Why can't every car be like this

My first was 1987 Corolla FX. Then I have a 1990 corolla which I still own (256000 miles) and own also a 2017 corolla SE. Love my Toyotas. #1 all the way!!! 😄

I owned a 2005 Corolla Sport Manual. It was insane how reliable it was, especially compared to the American cars I grew up with. The Takata airbag recall was a major pain though. They notified me that because of the danger, no one should ride in the passenger seat until the replacement became available (15 Months later). In the meantime, I had to drive three kids to school and stuff them all in the back seat. At 6 am 🤨
