Our trip to the Middle East takes us to Hebron, one of the largest cities in the Westbank where more than 200,000 Palestinians are segregated from around 850 Jewish settlers that are protected by 650 Israeli soldiers. The city centre is a ghost town: Palestinians inhabitants are not allowed to use main roads, other streets they can only walk on.
Hebron is a perfect example to understand how the Israeli occupation of the Westbank functions, says Yehuda Shaul. Yehuda served in the IDF from 2001 to 2004, mostly in Hebron during the Second Intifada. After his military service Yehuda was one of the founders of "Breaking the Silence" in which active and former Israeli soldiers want to educate the public about the daily routine of occupation in the Westbank. They ask the question: Have we crossed the moral line? What does the occupation do to the Israeli society? "Breaking the Silence" wants to serve as a mirror to its society that has mostly ignored the 51+ years of occupation. Yehuda says that 90 per cent of his actions as a soldier in the Westbank were immoral.
In Part 1 Yehuda talks to us about "Breaking the Silence", why it was founded and what problems the NGO faces today. Part 2 is about Hebron's history: Why is the city so important to Jewish settlers? When did the settler movement begin? Why were two massacres in 1929 and 1994 so crucial for today's situation? How is it possible that less than 1,000 settlers (protected by 650 IDF soldiers) have control over the Hebron? How does the segregation work? What kind of tactics do the soldiers employ to keep Palestinians inhabitants in constant fear?
Part 3 focusses on Hebron today. Yehuda takes us on a tour through the ghost town. He explains how Palestinians over the yearas were driven out of Hebron's city center. He explains what he had to do on a daily basis. During filming kids from Hebron try to disturb us. They throw eggs at us, spit at us - cheered by their parents who frequently provide them with more eggs. At the end we meet young Palestinians from "Youth against settlements" who are fighting the occupation and Jewish settlements through non-violence. The episode ends in Kirja Arba, at the grave of a terrorist who many people cherish...

I highly recommend watching all of this video! Yes it is long, but Yehuda Shaul gives a very measured and precise description of the ongoing insanity that Hebron exemplifies. I have studied the issue of "security" in this region, and this portrayal of the situation in Hebron matches my experiences on the ground in other parts of the OPT as well as accounts from other Israelis and Palestinians. THE MOST IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY HERE IS THAT NOW YOU KNOW AND YOU CANNOT REMAIN SILENT! Especially those of us in the USA who send $3.8Bn/year, $10mn/day in unconditional military weapons funding which is used to prop up these war crimes and crimes against humanity. Thank you so much for this precious work that gives us an insight into realities, Jewish and Palestinian voices that are not heard by or portrayed in German statal and mainstream media. It seems to be so important in our days to work against an appropriation of Jewish and Palestinian identity by political and religious extremist voices and parties, which is supported in the Israili case by the German government, trying to make us believe that the only way to be Israili and Jewish is to accept actions of a government acting against international law and human rights conventions. Dem würde ich doch entschieden widersprechen - so groß der Einzugsbereich von J&N mittlerweile auch geworden sein mag, ist das doch nicht im Ansatz mit dem Zuschauerpotential vergleichbar, den eine Samstagabendsendung zur Prime Time im Hauptprogramm mit sich bringen würde. Es sollen gerade die "aktiv angesprochen" werden, die sich zwar "irgendwie interessieren", aber eben nicht "danach suchen".

Wie können wir uns als Deutschland in 2021 zu 100 % hinter Israel stellen? Wir haben eine historische Verantwortung, aber das heißt nicht, dass wir die Augen vor so einem Unrecht verschließen müssen. In meinen Augen müsste man die Loyalität zu Israel an Verbesserung für die menschenrechtliche Situation der Palästinenser knüpfen. In den palistinensisch kontrollierten Gebieten von Hebron und im Westjordanland stehen überall Schilder, an denen Juden der Zutritt verboten wird. Da steht, dass Juden gegen das Gesetz verstoßen, wenn sie die Gebiete betreten. Ebenso ist die Shuhada Straße auch deswegen utnergegangen, weil die Palis im kontrollierten H1 - Gebiet in der Sarah Straße ein Geschäftsviertel mit allerlei modernen Geschäften haben, was Juden nicht betreten dürfen. Wieso kommt hier Niemand auf die Idee es Apartheid zu nennen`?
Das es noch Menschen gibt die die Menschlichkeit nicht verloren haben, so mutig zu sein diese misstände anzusprechen. Das macht mir hoffnung das es irgendwann auch weltweit Frieden geben kann.
Schade um meinen etwas längeren Kommentar bei der Erstveröffentlichung der Folge gestern, aber sei's drum: Ich schreibe es hier nochmal kurz: Das ist eine wirklich großartige Folge, die eine zum Teil beklemmende Stimmung vermittelt. Danke für eure Arbeit!

Ich wollte heute Abend eigentlich nur die erste Hälfte schauen, bin dann aber doch bis zum Schluss dran geblieben. Diese zum Teil gespenstische Leere einer Großstadt am hellichten Tag, die ich sonst nur aus dem Szenario Zombieapokalypse kenne, und eure Begegnung mit den Kindern waren besonders... "beeindruckend". Ich will nicht behaupten, dass ich verstehe, wie es euch, Tilo und Theiler, nach dem Dreh ging und wie euch das bis heute noch begleitet, aber wenn ich den Eindruck, den das Video bei mir hinterlassen hat, hochrechne auf die Wirkung, die sich einstellen muss, wenn man vor Ort war, dann kann ich gut nachvollziehen, dass euch das auch mit einigem zeitlichen und räumlichen Abstand noch nahegeht. Ich wünsche euch, dass ihr das mit der Veröffentlichung des Videos ein Stück weit hinter euch lassen könnt, natürlich nicht in dem Sinne, dass ihr es vergesst, aber dass es euch nicht mehr so betrübt, wie es das zuletzt im Aufwachen Podcast und im Regierungstagebuch noch getan hat. Das war tolle Arbeit von euch, vielen Dank!

I grew up on the street where they were filming. I saw my elementary school, my memories of playing in those streets as a child, I recalled the trips I made to the market with my father to buy groceries. As they walked deeper and deeper into the city, my memory started to fade gradually, as older I got and the less streets I was allowed to walk on I started making less memories during the curfews and being stuck at home for months and months. I was praying they keep walking so I can see more and refresh my memory of the old city, I haven’t been on those streets in more than 20 years. Now I am on a different continent, thousands of miles away and upset that those settlers hijacked my city. Palestine will be free, and the nazi jewish occupation will end, this is a fact. Very interesting interview. Recommend to include into the opening montage an excerpt of what Yehuda states around 33:30 about his overall stance . It frames succinctly what he is about. Common problem with long, in depth, interviews is that such key sentences can be easy to miss as one’s attention can wander… (especially when you listen while driving or while doing other tasks) . Do you also have podcast version of these video interviews ?

Hallo, ein sehr guter Beitrag. Vielen Dank fürs Posten! Mein Mann und ich leben in Palästina und erfahren die Besetzung mit all ihren schrecklichen Auswirkungen, Check-Points jeden Tag.
Am schlimmsten ist, dass Touristen und Besucher in Israel absolut nichts von Hebron mitbekommen. Sie fahren über die israelischen Straßen im Westjordanland und wissen nicht, dass sie im Westjordanland sind. Da alle Straßen, Schilder, Infotafeln etc. ganz bewusst darauf ausgelegt sind, genauso wie die in Israel auszusehen. Man kann quasi gar nicht bemerken, dass man sich im Westjordanland befindet. Die Besetzung des Landes ist inzwischen (schrecklicher Weise!) zu einem Maximum ausgereift. Jeden Tag werden die Settlements und Straßen weitergebaut und somit das Land weiter geklaut. Der touristischen Welt wird die grausame Besetzung des Westjordanlands komplett verborgen. Die Straßen zur 8m hohen Grenzmauer, die Palästina/Westjordanland abriegelt, sind auch verbogen. In Navigationssystemen kommt die Meldung, dass man sich in einem gefährlichen Gebiet findet, sobald man sich in der Nähe der Mauer befindet. Sprich: Man wird sogar con den einfachsten Dingen (wie vom Navi) davon abgehalten, in die Richtung des Westjordanlands zu fahren, AUSSER man fährt auf einer israelisch angelegten Siedlerstraße… die Lage ist wirklich dramatisch.

Ich mag mir nicht ausmalen wie viel Kraft es Menschen wie Yehuda kostet, in dem System aufzuwachsen und sich von den Vorurteilen zu befreien (zumindest weitestgehend), nur um dann noch gegen den Widerstand aus den eigenen Reihen ein solches Engagement aufzubringen.
Ergänzend kann ich noch von Schätzing den Roman Breaking News empfehlen, der viel der Geschichte Palästinas/Israels seit den 1920ern aufarbeitet.

Super Doku, vor allem dank Yehuda. Timo sollte etwas an seinem Allgemeinwissen arbeiten und seine journalistische Aufgabe als Fragensteller und Leiter überdenken 😅. Aber das ist ja auch schon 4 Jahre her. Und vllt gerade deswegen konnten wir so viel durch Yehufa erfahren.
