The history of Hamas, Fatah and Palestinian resistance | Azzam Tamimi | The Big Picture S3E02

  • The history of Palestinian liberation movements is paved with setbacks, betrayals and bitter rivalries.
What began as an attempt to unify the resistance against Israeli occupation has over time been undermined by regional and global political interests, ideological differences and disagreements over the justification, and use, of guerilla tactics.
Today the question of who represents Palestinian interests is hotly contested, with Hamas and Fatah vying for control, and a wave of dissatisfied young factions on the rise in Gaza and the West Bank.
This week on The Big Picture podcast, we speak with British-Palestinian academic and political activist Dr Azzam Tamimi.
In the light of the ongoing violence in Gaza and Israel, and the devastating toll on civilian life, Dr Tamimi explains how these movements began, and why another Palestinian uprising is inevitable.

Palestine has suffered occupation since 1948, and 75 years of ethnic cleansing, displacement, torture, murder and all forms of violence against Muslims in Al-Aqsa and Christians in Bethlehem by the murderous fascist apartheid regime called Israel🇮🇱
Palestinians have the right to defend their homeland against the occupation. They have the right to demand independence. They have the right to demand freedom. Isn't that what you say every day about Ukraine? Isn't this what black people in South Africa suffered from?
So how do you stand today with the oppressor Israel!! Stop the double standards
Israel has been committing genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians for 75 years. Why don't you acknowledge that the resistance in Gaza only seeks freedom and that what it is doing is a response to the violations of the occupation for 75 years?

Let me see if I can explain it by using the Civil War of the United States. Back in the days of the Civil War, we had our Northerners that were known as the union, and our Southerners that were known as the confederacy. Those of us in the confederacy lived in plantations and mansions, owned slaves and indentured servants in order to run our plantations efficiently. Basically we were the newer version of royalty. The north was industrial, and their power was in automation and streamlining in manufacturing. As we grew apart and decided we didn’t really want to pay taxes since they were the one with all the industry and we liked our way of life, they told us we couldn’t have our slaves, we decided to succeed from the union and that’s what began the Civil War. You could have family members on one side of the other because it was geographical war. We had freed black men who fought in the union, and we had enslaved black men that fought for the confederacy, we also had some free black men fighting for the confederacy to there’s a lot people don’t till historical count of what really went on down here in the south trust me, the books would be epic with a scandal. Anyways, let’s say were in Texas were women fighting the Mexicans and the Indians and now we’ve got a fight our own people so it’s Buckwild up in here we’ve got the Cowboys, the Indians, the slaves, the freed blacks, The Mexico’s, and anybody else who wants to jump in to the fray and while they’re out there fighting and killing each other over land, the masses or sitting up in the big mansions with the generals and admirals and chieftains having fresh squeezed lemonade poured has a beautiful mulatto hands of a house slave. They’re so far away from what’s going on and enjoying space where they’re free to discuss their big ideas, but it doesn’t matter that they’re men are gay being slaughtered out there in the droves as long as they can sit there and talk about their big ideals, reserved, have something beautiful to look at, and be entertained
This was dictated at 3:54 AM so I’m sure it’s full of spelling errors or wrong words but I’ll just have to fix that tomorrow OK?

Azzam Tamimi, (is he related to Ahed Tamimi), is right to say educate yourself. I see so many people indoctrinated with propaganda but have no real learnings about Palestine/Israel, or the Middle East. I have 20 books on the subject read. I have another 8 in my bookcase to be read. My journey to advocate for Palestine started in the early 70's. My first wife grew up in Saudi Arabia. Back then she tried to show me another way of looking at the conflict. By the mid 80's I was definitely pro-Palestinian, with one political science book from a used bookstore that opened my eyes. With everything I have learned since then, I consider Israel the most existential threat next to the US in this world.

This is meant to be the “Big Picture” but there is no discussion of the role of the imperialist power and nothing about why figures within the current Israeli government have previously called Hamas an “asset”.
Palestine is different from South Africa, Vietnam and Algeria because the imperialist powers could afford to allow post colonial governments in those.
In the Middle East, with its geo strategic energy reserves and trade routes, the imperialist powers need a reliable ally and their best bet is Israel. Israel was created to serve their interests and it had their full support so long as it continues to do so.
    QUOTE
… It testifies not only to the utterly reactionary character of Zionism, but to the far-advanced political, social, intellectual and moral putrefaction of a capitalist system that is rooted in the national state system. Herein lies the broader significance of the intransigent solidarity of all imperialist powers with the Israeli state. There are, of course, pragmatic geopolitical interests that determine the support of the United States and its NATO allies for Israel’s war against the Palestinian people.
But underlying this united front against the Palestinians is the recognition that their democratic aspirations, which require the dissolution of the existing Israeli state and the creation of a new bi-national federation, threaten not only the interests of imperialism in the Middle East, but the entire historically obsolete state structure of imperialist geopolitics and capitalist rule.
Neither the oppression of the Palestinian people nor, for that matter, the historic and still very real issue of antisemitism can be solved within the framework of the capitalist system and its nation state. Imperialism, in creating the Israeli state, did not solve the “Jewish problem.” It exploited and took advantage of the immense tragedy of the Holocaust-one of imperialism’s greatest crimes-for its own purposes.

It is a fallacy that the Israeli-Palestinian “conflict is complicated.
The original sin in this matter was committed in 1917 by the British Government who promised the Palestinian land to European Zionists with no legitimate right to do so. This illegitimacy was further entrenched by the United Nations in 1948 by the creation of the state of Israel, which was unfairly given 56% of the Palestinian land. The Arabs felt betrayed because Britain gave their land to refugees from Europe and Russia. While the Zionist felt aggrieved because the British promised all the Palestinian lands to the Zionist in exchange for their support and betrayal of Germany in WWI. So Subsequently Israel has been flouting international law and given impunity by the UK and US to “fulfil” their original promise - to ethically cleanse Palestinian civilians and steal the rest of their land. The US is blindly supporting the Zionist regime because it sees it as its colonial outpost, taking care of its imperialist interests in the Middle East.
However, The truth of the matter is very simple, but the Western governments and their puppet Arab regimes are too depraved and cowardly to acknowledge the truth and address the wrongs done to the Palestinian people. Justice is a prerequisite for peace and humanity as a collective needs to understand this and correct the wrongs of the past. We need to remember that we are all the children of God.. and this perpetual injustice is a threat to our collective humanity…

Use google and regurgitate Israeli propaganda to legitimise their illegitimate claim to Palestine . No thank you,I don’t need a lesson in fake history by Israel.
Whether you choose to believe or not, The truth of the matter is that Palestinians are not responsible for atrocities against Europeans and Russian Zionists and making them refugees and therefore is not legitimate that the refugee population was given a significant portion of the Palestinian land. As a result a great and grave injustice continues to be perpetrated against the Palestinians as they are unfairly having to pay the price for the past 75 years, for the atrocities and sins of European Christians, just because Western political greed and depravity does not allow this wrong to be rectified .

There was a deal laid out after the years of the Fatah/PLO resistance led by Arafat when they combined.
The deal was the birth of the "Two State Solution" which would give Israel/Palestinian a state to live together in.
They would agree on returning particular territory back to the Palestinians and pull back settlements in other areas to give a balance of land to each side so there would be an end to the violence which was brewing from the beginning but changed in the 60'/70s with things like "Black September" and "Munich".
Palestinians weren't getting any talk from the Israelis and were continuing to get hammered and fought back in a way they could long before 1987 and what you see today.
The idea Arafat agreed to along with Rabin and Clinton was the "Oslo Accords" in the late 80's and early 90's was that two state solutions would achieve peace and end the ongoing occupation and stop the violence.
It was equally led by Rabin, the Prime Minister at that time as well and wanted to get the deal done to end the decades of fighting.
Many of the Israeli population didn't like that and felt it was a betrayal and defeat to give Arafat or the Palestinians anything and would have huge demonstrations with Rabin in Nazi SS uniforms or dragging a coffin around saying it was for him.
The Religious Right was especially leading the charge and none other than Netanyahu was one of the main protagonists of it.
Later Prime Minister Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish Civilian and the whole deal fell apart because no other Israeli Prime Minister after that just as before wanted to deal with the Palestinians and continued worsening the occupation and settlements.
Now we're at the point of many more uprisings, loss of land, tougher occupation and tougher hate and resistance in the Gaza Strip and West Bank for Israel that has led to this outcome repeating itself since 1948 really.

If this discussion is meant to bring autonomy and freedom to the Palestinian people, it is hard to realize. If this discussion is meant to further the divide, you have accomplished. There is a fine line between anger and hate. The tipping point between the two is contempt. Neither peace nor freedom can be achieved through contempt and hate from either side of conflict.
