Need more weight on the indicator setup. The fly should be ticking bottom. And use two flies. It doubles your hookups. Another good fly you should use is a beadhead pheasant tail or any BH mayfly. Also mend your line during your cast to keep the fly in the strike zone for the longest amount of time

I like to use a 1/16 oz crappie jig with a green skirt/clear tail. Tail is split in 6-8 straight tails. Just jig it like you are. Also, if any overhanging brush/limbs you can use a clear casting bobber and cast up stream and direct right under the instructions.

For us landlocked states where fresh water action is all we get, a jig head with swim bait is THE SETUP. Glad to see it in your arsenal!

Great video! I tried using a jighead with a small crappie swimbait this week. It slayed them. I was using an inline spinner and had to switch over after watching the guy next me slay them with a crappie jig set up. After i saw everyone switch over around us. I think i ended up catching about 30 stockers that afternoon in a small public pond.

Black Stonefly Nymph either single or double bead (depends on depth and current) with a small Prince Nymph tied on the shank with a short 6" leader. Cast as far upstream as possible to let it sink. Mend your line for a natural slow drift. Nice video as always

My go to is usually a black fly pattern or hare's ear nymph. Good casting also!! On my roll cast I usually bring the rod tip up slower and create a D shape coming off the rod behind me. Makes for a nicer roll effect. Nice hull control as well 🤙🏽

I'm going to bring my boys to California over Christmas break foe some fishing. Any recommendations on where some newbies could fish? I'm not a newbie to fishing, but I've never fished the California coast, only the east coast. I'm going to try for some crab snaring and it would be great to get on some rock fish from shore. I'll have my kayak with me which I've taken out on some pretty big water, but not sure I'll get it out on this trip.

Midges are typically in the water year round and an easy source of food for trout. A black bead-head zebra midge is my confidence nymph...Sizes 18-22. If the fish are taking jigs...then you could cast size 2-6 weighted streamers and get some decent action as well, especially if browns are active.

For roll casting you do not want your D loop on the opposite side of your body from the anchor. That fly almost clipped you a few times in the chin. Instead, if the anchor is downstream of you, form the D loop on the downstream side of your body. If you want to form the D loop on the upstream side of your body, then you need to get that fly on the upstream side of your body as well(see switch casts).

Get a 9ft 3x nylon leader and add fluorocarbon tippet(4x-6x) if you're going to fly fish with an indicator. I recommend the Oros strike indicator. And invest on a good fly line.

Have you tried tenkara fly fishing? Looks like it could work well there, especially if the fish are easily spooked.
BTW swimbaits and berkley gulp minnows like that work AMAZING for trout. Small sinking jerkbaits are deadly when trout fishing. You can also experiment by using a soft plastic that imitates a small crayfish on a jighead. Good luck out there, looking forward to seeing you catch that brown! 🎣

  • @yarconator5429

try using swimm baits as small as possible, it will help with with the hookups. they often only attack the tails. 2,5cm to 4cm is best. the ones targeted to crappie and other sunfish work really well for me. i use them fishing small streams in germany . i caught my pb brown trout (22 inch) on a one inch curly tail . they are really cheap baits that outfish most spinners and crankbaits.

You should feel the weight of the backcast before starting the forecast.
As far as Nymphs to use, I like starting with a weighted Hare's Ear, a Black Stonefly, a Peacock with gold bead head, or of course the egg-sucking wooly bugger is always good. Depends on your creek. Fall/Winter is a great time for minnow patterns and an excellent time for spin fishing, either a 3" scented plastic (gulp) cast upstream and drifted downstream or with a small inline spinner. Some big fish will hit in the fall.

Yes, the jig heads with white grubs work great however the hooks are large, oriented upwards, and with a large barb. Sometimes the hook will go up through the "nose" of the fish doing damage. I always bend down the barb to minimize the potential damage. You will find the you will get tons of hits with the grubs but often they are hitting and sometimes biting the tail off. They are also great for fishing funky pockets, between rock piles, in crevices and whatnot.

  • @thecalfisher
    @thecalfisher 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Nice! I want to get up to your farm eventually. When you fish in the winter, use small flies like size 18 zebra midges or Hogan’s S and M nymph for BWO nymphs. Stoneflies aren’t very active in the winter until January. Another tip is if you want to keep your leader intact and fish a lot deeper, use a small size 12 swivel on the end of your leader. Then add about 3 feet of tippet. Add maybe 14 inches more tippet from the end of that to your fly. Then add the split shot above the knot to keep it from sliding down. Also if you do those big overhead cast with the indicator rig, then you will get tangled a ton. Instead use a Belgian cast or the water load which is where you let the fly swing downstream (you might get a strike here) and use the friction of the water to shoot the line upstream in one cast. And if you want a longer drift, feed line out by throwing it downstream and across in the same lane as your indicator to avoid drag. Winter is tough, but at least there’s almost no one out there either!

Anything above a 1/8 oz jig is too heavy for trout most of time.
2-3" group of minnow with a jig will work.
2lb is unnecessarily light 4lb to 6lb is fine.
As far as fly, you must use tippet. Even when using 9ft leader you still want 3-4ft of tippet. 5x for both.
The least amount of gear on tour line as possible. If your going to use an indicator try a white cloth.
And better to use a bead head.
C&R only handle your trout above water. Wet your hands 1st.
Trout can't breath unless water is moving through its gills.

Fly roll casting, leave the line in the water and use the weight of it to load the rod in an arcing move. You never casted to the other side of the scum line and maybe that's where they were?
I've fly fished for 30 years and would have flogged that water with everything in my kit BUT in the last 5-6 years after watching you and Adam surf fish I've come around and now will carry a second spin rod. Learning from your experience here swim baits are to be added to my arsenal. Love the Okuma SST, I use it for surf and Salmon. Dude, youre doing good.
