The opening on this episode was amazing, I think we all know that sauron secretly has earbuds under that helmet so that he can listen to hard rock while he crushes mortals
That thing is not just a mace, what you've crafted is the staff of the 1st wizard, the scepter of the greatest fallen maiar and Morgoth's heir on Middle Earth... In all seriousness you guys do incredible work. I know how much hard work goes into working those tools and you've always put such quality into your work. Well done.
anything that big is obviously gonna do some damage. Especially when you consider that a normal mace for humans is about the size of a hammer. The weight especially wouldn't be much more than that of a normal hammer. And the damage that would do even against armor is incredible. So size that up 25 times and you can't imagine the damage that does.
A mace is actually a relatively good weapon. Requires little training. Less skill needed than a bladed weapon. Fighting a spear? Smash the handle. Fighting a sword? Break the blade. Can't get past a shield? Beat against it until the arm on the other side shatters. Swords are just a lot more famous and elegant, but I think if I was ever stuck in medieval times, I would go for a mace.
Uhh, no. Yes, it requires less training, but even still. You can be defeated with any weapon. If a mace was much better and beating enemies was as easy as you seem to think it is, no other weapons would've even been used.
I never said it was better. Any weapon can be deadly if the user is skilled enough. Bo staffs, arrows, daggers and knives. I just said I would rather use a mace than I would a sword if I, myself, was forced to choose.
Maces are used for denting armour. Someone with a spear could simply stab the dude with the mace for a distance. Swords are used wit agility and speed to inflict damage, not bash the other dude with the blunt side.
A mace is used for smashing things, be they weapons, armor, shields, bones or heads. Ans since most armor was designed to deflect blades, a good solid blow would send most of the impact through the armor. But as I explained before, the usefulness of a weapon is dependent on its wielder. A blind master with a bo staff could out fight a street thug with a knife. That's a given. And as I also explained before, I, personally, would rather use a mace or hammer than a sword or spear.
+Lord Korthos Would be possible to create, but impossible to demonstrate with. I bet that very few persons on Earth would be capable of lifting this monster by its handle, and practically noone would be able to flail it.
+Specoups well they made it comically huge in the movie on purpose. For intimidation. being able to properly use the thing wasn't Peter Jackson's concern.
In the books, it's a mace though, so I assume it would be significantly more practical. Plus, the Witch-King has basically unlimited strength, considering he doesn't have a physical form.
Yeah, I remember a behind the scenes thing where they had to have a guy laying on the ground, helping Lawrence Makoare hold it up, because even the prop was too heavy for one person.
The mace that the captain Black Hammer has from game Shadow of Mordor would be an awesome build. It is similar to Sauron except that each flange is made to resemble a miniature skeleton.
I'm going to believe the 2 guys who were actually holding the weapon in question. At least i'm pretty sure Viccer is the 6 foot 7 guy in the badass armour.
One mace to rule them all, one mace to find them, one mace to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them. In the shop of Man at Arms, where shadows lie.
A lot of people including myself miss Tony and his crew, but that's not to say these guys aren't amazing at this, in fact they are just as good if not better than Tony and his crew, so I don't care.
for lore reference the mace was called Grond, in homage to 'Grond, hammer of the underworld' the original warmace of Morgoth or Melkor prior to his fall to darkness, (Morgoth being the original dark lord and saurons master), as well as naming the great siege breaker by the same name that broke the gates of minas tirith in the return of the king portion of the storyline.
A one-handed mace always seemed my first pick in real combat, but a two-handed mace might be even better. It's slower, but one hit will obliterate anything. No edge alignment, no fancy tricks, armor won't work, with this you'll just bash right through flesh, steel and bone. Maybe a two-handed mace backed by a one-handed shortsword... That'd be really good.
Neither a one-handed mace nor a two-handed mace would be any good in a 1v1 situation and even less viable in a 1v2 or more fight. In duels, quickness wins, always. If you were to swing at someone with a two-handed mace, unless you hit them in the skull, (which you wouldn't unless they were extremely uncoordinated) you would then die because they have an extremely high amount of time to stab you or cut you.
***** What snakeguy818 said is true. and no one handed maces are not as quick as swords, the center of balance is very near the tip meaning you couldn't it fast unless you were extremely strong or it had a counterweight
***** Parrying isn't even an issue. You have to wind up so much with a big heavy tool like this that someone with a lighter sword can kill you before you even manage to start your attack.
I would love to see you guys build "The Chaoseater"...War's sword from the game Darksiders....please please please....I think its gonna be one hell of a challanging build.
After MAN AT ARM you have: MAN AT ARM: REFORGED. Next up is MAN AT ARM: RETREBUTION Followed by MAN AT ARM: REVOLUTION And don't forget to tune in for MAN AT ARM history with MAN AT ARM: ORIGINS.
They used some solid stuff for Thor's hammer as well, if memory serves me. It's easier to get away with when you have a weapon made for crushing instead of slicing.
A sword against a cinder block is not going to do anything except damage the sword. A sledgehammer (which is what this is, in terms of weight and battle functionality) against a cinder block is an appropriate test. If you're using something to smash a cinder block, it's too heavy to wield in battle. The human skull is nowhere near as strong and making your mace too heavy would only tire you out and make your movements way too slow. That said, this was never meant to be a functional weapon, only as a decoration.
NowhereManForever No, they've made weapons that could definitely destroy a cinder block but where only demo'd on soda bottles and melons. I'm not saying every weapon, but when you make a buster sword, I wanna see some damage.
+Oliver Nham actually thats not too impressive- i saw a video from cold steel where they destroyed a cinderblock with a polypropylene (some kind of plastic) sword.
Yeah, they're not really that strong, other than in the orientation they are supposed to be. I made a chain mace using a decorative cast iron ball, back years ago, and it busted up a cinder block pretty easily.
LightSchiffer True, but it's literally just a sword. The only thing worthy of mention would be the scales on the side of the blade. Other than that it's nothing but sentimental value for those who watch the anime. There'd be no interesting commentary since it'd be one of the easiest things they've ever made and that makes for a very boring video. And don't get me wrong, I dont want spines, runes or jewels everywhere. I just don't want them to start doing generic shit swords. And that includes Pyramid head's sword too.
an Ulfberht, with a focus on the properties of metal itself and not only on the look, would be really cool. Actually, this comment applies to all historical weapons...
PBS has a pretty good special where they discuss the history of the Ulfberht swords and what made them special. I even have the DVD. www.amazon.com/Nova-Secrets-Viking-Sword/dp/B008V8NRV2/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1418926781&sr=1-1&keywords=viking+sword
Ulfberhts are somehow legendary swords, and I suppose than can be attributed to the amazing metallurgy that goes into them. I watched the PBS documentary on them, and analyzations of the steel indicated the perfect amount of carbon in the blade to make it resilient and hard but also flexible. These blades were even better than the European broadswords that came centuries later, but the reason they would be so difficult to reproduce is because very VERY few original Ulfberhts exist today, and their method of production and recipe for the perfect steel has been lost over time. Still, if they can pull it off, I would be ecstatic.
Angry_Megatron The only thing that made Ulfberhts so good was the purity of the steel. Nowadays, we can make steel so pure that it puts Ulfberht to shame.
it doesn't matter HOW much armor you have on. that that would mess you up NO MATTER WHAT! unless you were a SUPERHUMAN and wore half a meter of steel! but the FORCE would still knock you back! you are GODS in my eyes!
Vojtěch Martinec Unless you're talking about mail with plates in it, like what is seen in parts of eastern Europe and India, there is no such thing as plate mail. However, full plate armor, which is what I assume yo're talking about, isn't nearly as restrictive as people think. A man in battle needs to be able to run, jump and so on, and any armor that prevented a man from doing so wouldn't have been used. A normal flanged mace weighs about 1 to 1.5 kg and does a fine job at fighting full plate armor. Hell, even something as light as a sword pummel can mess up a guy wearing plate. That sword you're talking about sounds like an over sized ceremonial piece, which wouldn't be that odd. Outlandish ceremonial weapons and armor are seen all over the world.
Kyle allen Claymores are a type of great sword and fit in to the 2 to 3kg range for great swords. Also, Wallace is a national hero of Scotland. They've even made some movies about him.
Pick any of the following: >Shulk's sword - Xenoblade Chronicles/Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U >TRON mashup - Black Guard sword with identity disk around the handle >Lightsabre with crossguards - Star Wars: The Force Awakens >Hiccup's flaming sword - How to Train Your Dragon 2 >Rita's sword - Edge of Tomorrow
+Alexander Binz Guess you could say that video really... "screwed" us over! :D Get it? GET IT?! xD **quiet crickets in the background, not knowing what the fuck to do...**
Mr Bolter Correction, it would be *absolutely* impossible to use. I remember reading some numbers on it. If it's made out of solid iron, as was stated in the manga, it would weigh close to a thousand pounds. That's like half of a VW Beetle being swung around. In the old PS2 game, a single swing takes about a whole second (although, in the manga he allegedly moves too fast for the human eye). Given the length of the sword, the tip of the sword going through the arc is traveling about 30 feet per second. When Guts sends that thing flying, it's literally like a car crash on a stick. The only question left is how he keeps himself rooted on the ground instead of having the momentum of it carry him up and through the air. XD
LOL i'd love to see that but holy shit, it would be impossible to even forge. The table would break in half because of the weight. (not really, but i doubt their equipment could house something so heavy and big ) That thing weights at least 60 kilos (more like 100 if you take it's relative size into account). It's like being hit by a sack of cement at running speed. Just by bit hit you'd surely be thrown into the air. Tony had troubles with the buster sword already, this one is even bigger and bulkier, they'll need at least three persons to move it like in the manga.
Matt Stagmer please do the scissor blades from kill la kill or the real masamune from the legends u know the perfect balanced katana which is almost invisible if you swing it or do altair's sword from ac1
Try to imagine the police report written after the world's least lucky armed intruder breaks into the home of whomever is currently in possession of this mace...
EarthKrusher i was talking about the whole Man at Arms series. I watch them because the final product is pretty cool, but the process is quite a bit dissapointing. For example, the jedi katana they made was laser cutted to be curved and they didn't use tamahagane steel or different steels for the edge and the rest of the blade.
Alfredo Gonzalez Oh boo hoo, i guess the FREE video didint satisfy you enough because they didint do it EXACTLY as you wanted them to. Show some respect for the creators and at least throw in a compliment.
Oliver first of all, they're EARNING MONEY WITH THE VIDEO, so they have to make it the best they can. If you read my comment, i say that the final product is usually pretty cool, so calm down. Anyways, comments are made to show opinions, and if my opinion is that they could work harder on some projects, i will say it.
When you get down to it, Anduril is but a sword, whereas this mace is more uncommon and interested to watch being forged. Incidentally, glad to see the reforged series has found a breath compared to how it was before
+Bruce Wayne they didnt..... atleast not like this one.... an experienced blacksmith can do amazing things tho just search on youtube or google and youll find examples
before welding? are you aware of what hammering 2 pieces of hot steel together is called? lets call it forge welding for now. or maybe one could taper the handle and slide one of these "flanges" onto it?who knows
I think it's cool to see realistic blades on this show, like the Meteor Sword and William Wallice's Claymore. Zoro's swords are realistic, and highly stylized.
Austin Jones im with you, i want the monado :) however half of what makes it awesome is that it is half a blade of light (i dont like it when people just say ITS A LIGHTSABRE -_-)
Grond is one of my favorite fantasy weapons. It's a mace, but the flanges are also hybridized as axe blades, which are long enough at the top for the user to spear people with. It's beautiful.

Yoriko Arran not that mace! It was a joke on set about how stupidly huge the mace is.
Adventures in Forging yeah, but so is Sauron, so for a human Sauron sized, say about 8 to 9 foot, it would be pretty useable.
Jelle Bootsma but then the handle would be too small for the hands of a giant.
it's great against armor and assuming it's large guy like sauron I don't see the problem.

Favorite weapon I've seen you guys make so far. Also it would have been nice to see more lateral swings instead of swinging it like a sledge hammer.
It weighs about 70-75 lbs. Lateral swing were difficult
viccer renstralt I sincerely doubt that weighed 70LB's. I've been working with metals my whole life, and I'd estimate that at 55LB's.

Chuckles I bet... 190cm tall.
AWE me Artorias sword from Dark Soul!
That would be seriously awesome.
Yes please!
Heck, any of the boss weapons from the Souls series would be good. They're are some awesome designs in those games.
+1
vsGoliath You've never played dark souls true?
I really appreciate the welding edit on the flanges to where it matched the background music and stuff. That was really clever!
Pick any of the following:
>Shulk's sword - Xenoblade Chronicles/Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U
>TRON mashup - Black Guard sword with identity disk around the handle
>Lightsabre with crossguards - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
>Hiccup's flaming sword - How to Train Your Dragon 2

make the Conan sword, the classic one used by Arnold!
Didnt they did that before?
+Randy Woodworth
Atlantian sword. I think they did it.
+Eck I do not remember them making the Atlantean Sword.
Gatsu's Dragonslayer from Berzerk !
or daedric longsword from skyrim !
Guts' Dragonslayer would be pretty fucking awesome but it would be almost impossible to use
Mr Bolter
Correction, it would be *absolutely* impossible to use.
(not really, but i doubt their equipment could house something so heavy and big )
That thing weights at least 60 kilos (more like 100 if you take it's relative size into account). It's like being hit by a sack of cement at running speed. Just by bit hit you'd surely be thrown into the air.
Tony had troubles with the buster sword already, this one is even bigger and bulkier, they'll need at least three persons to move it like in the manga.
Just go buy a fuckhuge slab of steel from a steelworks and you have the dragon slayer right there.
joelson my name and I am Brazilian and I am a big fan of videos of you
keep it up
earned a hug
*Playing with the Sauron action figure*
What I said: Nerds!
What I meant: I want one!
They need to be on history channel (L) i love this guys!
they might as well. its not like history channel shows history anymore :P
are you crazy? they would end up make ALIEN weapons or something....
Man, you guys are AWESOME! Only just found this TH-cam channel. Could you make Thranduil's sword? or have you already done it? Thanks for posting.
I started forging because of this awesome channel
Holy shit who was the guy in the predator-esque mask?
Boy is LARGE
Need to make him some kind of mini city to rampage through
Matt Stagmer okay, i understand getting Sauron's mace on the show, but how the hell did you hire an uruk hai to swing that thing
I know Matt gave us the guys name but he reminds of Seven in Slipknot !!
inuyasha's tetsusaiga would be pretty damn sweet
Matt Stagmer please do the scissor blades from kill la kill or the real masamune from the legends u know the perfect balanced katana which is almost invisible if you swing it or do altair's sword from ac1
awesome:)
Matt Stagmer Matt wat do you like to build if you think
Yeah matt i know and i understand you
build the curved dragon greatsword from dark souls 2!! Is that even possible?
If we are thinking of the same thing, THAT WOULD BE HUGE
or perhaps the gravelord sword from dark souls 1
Artorious sword
The Crypt Blacksword would be awesome
Try to imagine the police report written after the world's least lucky armed intruder breaks into the home of whomever is currently in possession of this mace...
i still think that this series are too "cut and weld" rather than forging the weapons.
This is one of the few they cut and welded, Tony cut and weld a lot more than these guys
Oliver So because it's free you can't criticise it? Don't be a fool. Alfredo just wanted to see true forging, nothing wrong with that.
Cinder block break was my fav
Awesome piece, but I would rather see Anduril...
So were 2...
You can buy/look at anduril replicas anywhere, almost no one has done sauron's mace
Matt Stagmer can you make The Orcrist/ The Goblin Cleaver from The Hobbit!? Greetings from Sweden!
When you get down to it, Anduril is but a sword, whereas this mace is more uncommon and interested to watch being forged. Incidentally, glad to see the reforged series has found a breath compared to how it was before
Same, but i reckon that Orcrist would be a very interesting look.
This is straight from New Zealand!
did yall seriously put in a tie fighter scream for Saron loosing his fingers? . . . I love this.🤣 so much.
Make the Rebellion from Devil May Cry 3?
***** Yea Time to Rebellion!
Rebellion from DMC 3 would be great
Everyone loves Rebellion. Where is the love for Alastor?

Zoro's Katanas from One Piece (Wado Ichimonji, Yubashiri, Sandai Kitetsu or Shusui)

06:30 Please what is the name of that song ???
One of my favorites and I love all your work guys.
Kenshin's Sakaba! (Reverse-edge blade)
ohh yess
How would smiths put those kinda flanges on a mace in back when times before welding?
+Bruce Wayne they didnt..... atleast not like this one.... an experienced blacksmith can do amazing things tho just search on youtube or google and youll find examples
before welding? are you aware of what hammering 2 pieces of hot steel together is called? lets call it forge welding for now. or maybe one could taper the handle and slide one of these "flanges" onto it?who knows
+chris higdon that's why I'm asking...
+Bruce Wayne another method would be to upset the hell out of the handle or maybe wrap a strip around and around like a jelly roll.
+Bruce Wayne magic
That is quite a powerful weapon.
iv only been watching their channel for 2 day and my mind was blown
Can you make Thranduil's sword?
*Waiting for them to make Lu Bu Demons Bane*
***** xD its the strength type weapon of him in DW 6
Or maybe Liu Bei double sword, its cool too XD
***** xD its also nice XD
dear god, i'd love to learn how to smith like this
Robert king those people spend all their lives on doing this. It's not easy
Nick Ito and? i still want to do it
Robert king same
Showta Ito it’s there job after all
Same
my favourite weapon in the whole series. love this build. No.1!!
Witch king of angmars helm!
yesssss
One does not simply
...
...
OK, I got nothing.
One does not simply unscrew pommel and throw it at Aragorn
+DVSKATE All the Skall fans here. :-)
+Caranfin Naurlain Quick, end him rightly.
One does not simply make a "One does not simply" joke.
+EveryGameGuy/Akumation If one does not simply, then two must hardly...
You guys need to contact The Mountain and have him wield this
oreg gunderzen
Ppl don't want him to become even more formidable than he really is. Ppl want him dead. lol
you guts finally made my mace! so happy!!! time to cause some chaos
Imposible challenge: SHAO KAHN'S WRATH HAMMER
Tomás Estay that wouldn't be to hard
That honestly sounds easy. The hard part is turning someone’s head into a golf ball for it
Sword of Gryffindor
Totally!
Maybe you could make the mask of dishonored?
Marvelous video boys. Now forge Odin gungnir.
how about the Witch King's morning star?!
Zoro's three legendary swords from One Piece.
I think it's cool to see realistic blades on this show, like the Meteor Sword and William Wallice's Claymore.
Zoro's swords are realistic, and highly stylized.
Thanks for suggesting these, I've been do so since i first started watching Man At Arms
Matt Stagmer cmon you dont like making games weapons please today is my birthday
Make the Assassin's tomahawk from Assassin's Creed III. The one with the Assassin's logo used as blade.
this is thebest show on youtube
Welding? The mace would break much sooner than if they had fitted the mace properly.
It looked extremely nice, though
well considering these weapons are made more for their looks than usefulness in a fight
Make the historical "joyeuse"'s charlemagne sword(most famous french king)
mace of Molag Bal - Skyrim
One word: INSANE.
that mace will break if they test it with the nokia 3310
nokia 3310 can break anything
it would be like when Gimli tries to break the ring with his axe
No make the mace out of a Nokia
No make the mace out of a Nokia 3310
build the dawnbreaker from the elder scrolls v skyrim
Link's Hylian Shield from Legend of Zelda
Matt Stagmer Oh. which design, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Ocarina... ?
I wanna see a Monado, as long as Smash stuff is present.
I'm down with that. Still hope to one day see Xenoblade's Monado.
