  • Today Ilya Alekseyev will take you on the journey of making the Heretic. The sword that won him the Best Sword of the Year award at Bladeshow 2021. In this video he will cover the classical inspirations that lead him to design and create this masterpiece work of art. Ilya will go over how he made the mosaic damascus and how he constructed and forged the blade. He will show you how he forges the guard and pommel and how he does all the amazing engraving and inlay work on all of the pieces. Making the Heretic took on and off over a years time. It was originally planned to be Ilya's showcase item for bladeshow 2020 but it was canceled and the project was placed on hold. In this video we cover much more then bladesmithing and dive deep into creating art and why we should do it! We also dive into the topic of historical swords of this manner and why they were designed and what practicality they presented. Please sit back and enjoy the making of the Sword of the Year !

Oh hey, it's the Russian guy from Man At Arms Reforged that basically carried the entire show. It was always like "today we're making some video game thing, I'm gonna draw a picture on a piece of paper, then Ilya will forge the entire thing by himself while also explaining the entire history of metalworking from memory, and then Matt will sandpaper it for five hours."

I love how he's like "one guy gave me shit for not doing mosaic damascus", and decided to next level flex one of the most beautifully intricate pieces of mosaic I've ever seen. Literally the blacksmithing version of hold my beer

If this sword was created 300+ years ago they would write legends about it and the man that made it would be just as legendary

When most swordsmiths create a masterful piece: "This sword is a work of art!"

As a fellow blacksmith and certified jeweler my hat is off to you sir. THIS is a masterpiece. Definitely worthy of a king's hand.

So... Ilya is an Elven blacksmith. That sure does clear out why he is so good at this....

I honestly have never seen Damascus forged like this. Every detail in this sword is eyecatching, you could spend hours looking at it, appreciating the craftsmanship, the skill. I used to stan his carving skills on the Excalibur build back in man at arms, but this video took my admiration for Ilya to a whole other level, as he shows us how much of a genius of a smith he is. His name HAS to be remembered as a reference in the field.

Some commenter: Spites Ilya, says he can't do a thing.

I saw the thumbnail and was like "no way that sword looks that good its probably click bait" then I saw Ilya's face and my mind changed to "Ohhhhh yaaaa this is gonna be sick!"

As an artist my self it blows my mind to see you tell a story through a sword. Now this is what art is supposed to be in its truest form. Translating an idea in its purest form into the material world. That is art

I can see this masterpiece being admired in the future, maybe hundreds of years in the future, in a museum or something alike, this is the most beautiful sword I've ever seen.

This sword looks like epic loot straight out of the tomb of some legendary warrior-king, I'm utterly beside myself with awe. There is not a monarch in history who wouldn't have dumped mule-loads of silver at Ilya's feet to be the royal armorer or something.

  • @daniki8390

Man was told that he cant do mosaic damascus so he created the best one in the world

  • @kuroishiroi9012

this literally is the IRL version of a legendary weapon in a videogame, something you'd have to fight the hardest of monsters for, which would regain you the reign you once had over the kingdom... this is awesome, I could marvel at this for hours

The fact that this has been designed, draw, forged and sculpted by hand for one simple man, with his bare hands and tools at home is far more than impressive. You sir, are a very talented human being. This is an art masterpiece
