There was a period of about a decade from '85 to '95 when Simply Red dominated the more sophisticated pop/soul scene, certainly in the UK and Ireland. Their albums were loved by many of the musical elite of that era, although towards the end of their run of success some began to see them as too 'safe' or bland, but there's no doubt Hucknall had a great voice during this time and he was at his peak. From "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" to "Fairground" they had several memorable hits and were rarely out of the Top 40. The album "Stars" that this was the title track from, was the best-selling album in the UK for 1991 and 1992.
The Stars album, with its dreadlocked-Mick Hucknell in the desert iconography, was easily one of the best-selling in the UK of the entire '90s, as far as I recall. Up there with Oasis' What's The Story (Morning Glory)?, The Verve's Urban Hymns, and The Beautiful South's Carry On Up The Charts. The music critics, as you say, but the public, too, loved Simply Red for that short period in the early '90s, before they tired of them, and Hucknell in particular, for right or wrong. (There always has to be an inevitable backlash in British culture/ society, doesn't there?) Anyway, the Stars album is tops (For Your Babies, for instance, is irresistible) and the title track's always been an absolute banger.
Perfectly put. And just to point out how big an achievement that last bit was, no album had been the UK's best-seller of two separate years since Simon & Garfunkel's _Bridge Over Troubled Water_ in 1970 and '71. And, for that matter, the feat wouldn't be repeated until Adele's _25_ in 2015 and '16, meaning _Stars_ was the *only* album to do it in a span of 45 years!
My absolute favorite love song since 1992. The bass player Mr. Shaun Ward is KILLING IT on this song! Thank you for this post! Please also check out the other great song’s from this same album called “Something Got Me Started” (you’ll groove FOR SURE!!!) and because you are both LOVING parents please check out “For Your Babies”.
Was about to come and recommend "For Your Babies", as well as "Wonderland", "Your Mirror" and "Lady Godiva's Room". I can't stand Mick Hucknall, but this is a great album, I have to admit it.
The entire 1992 concert, A Starry Night with Simply Red, recorded in Hamburg, Germany, is mind-blowing. Mick Hucknall's voice live is consistently stunning and every member of the band is exceedingly talented. (By the way, his name is Mick, not Mike.) Since Amber hasn't heard Holding Back the Years yet, the live version from this concert would be a great reaction! They also do the song, Stars, and the one you both already heard the studio version of, If You Don't Know Me By Now (but LIVE is even better!). There are alot of videos available from this concert of other songs that are total vibes, like Thrill Me, The Right Thing, Enough, Freedom, Model, A New Flame and more...
I always see that Amber will totally feel the music; you think she's floating away, but then she'll give an in-depth analysis of the lyrics! You two are awesome.
but why doesn't anyone ever mention "come to my aid"? always the same: holding back the years and money to tight to mention! but never one, one! one who reacts and one who suggests "come to my aid". which for me is not only their masterpiece and one of the greatest masterpieces of the entire 80's, but it is also their most representative song.
Some more great songs by Simply Red: Somethings Got Me Started; It's Only Love; Oh What A Girl, Sunrise, The Right Thing, Night Nurse and many more! Mick Hucknall also had an album singing Bobby Blue Bland songs Thanks Jay & Amber!
Oh nooo, Night Nurse is not originally a Simply Red song! Although I like Simply Red’s cover version, the original version sung by the late great Gregory Isaacs is the superior version, by a country mile. If you haven’t heard the original, I would recommend listening to Gregory Isaacs’ Night Nurse.
My favorite song. I could play on repeat. I’m so happy that you love Mick’s voice because he truly is a vocal powerhouse! He’s still singing in his 60’s. In fact they’re still touring! A true performer. I love watching their concerts here on YT. They have a lot and they’re great. I HIGHLY recommend Stars from the concert - Symphonica in Rosso. Stars is a stunner! Gives me chills! It’s from 2018 so he’s significantly older but he still sounds absolutely amazing. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I had the pleasure of seeing this band in concert during their ‘Stars’ era and to this day, it’s the most fantastic concert I’ve seen in my life…pure brilliance!

@@LMmccallL57Think it's a reference to a blues guitarist from back when.....who had a diamond on his front tooth. Guess Mick thought it was the coolest thing....saying someday if he became famous, he wanted to do the same thing! You have a good one too!😌
Some more Simply Red suggestions are Money's Too Tight, A New Flame, Fairground, Something Got Me Started, Sunrise (with Hall and Oates I Can't Go For That sample), and It's Only Love.
You've basically listened to some of their ballads, but make sure to listen to what made us get up and dance: The Right Thing and Money's Too Tight To Mention were their first hits, being played everywhere, all the time.
One of those songs that, whenever I hear it, I turn up the volume. And I usually smash repeat at least once. "Sunrise" is another fantastic song of theirs to check out.
Stars was one of the biggest albums of the 90s in the UK and one of the biggest sellers in UK chart history with sales around 3.5m. Chock full of great songs - highly recommend 'Your Mirror' or 'For Your Babies' as next Simply Red listen.
The Fabulous Simply Red, I went to see James Brown when he came to London in the 80's and Simply Red were his support band. I actually enjoyed them more, the hit I loved most is called Moneys to Tight ❤😊🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Blue eye soul , simply red I remember when they first came on the music seen also see them in concert live one of my favorite singing group, ❤all their songs and albums, holding back the years, which was their first major hit If you don't know me by now , a remake from Harold Melvin and the blue notes , list goes in and on ,

I honestly do think that the 90's was quite possibly the last era of "Great music" being produced and made in a global sense.
Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here again. My favourite Simply Red songs are probably the early ones. Their first album, called Picture Book, is a masterpiece. Their first hit from that album was 'Money's Too Tight (to Mention)'. That's one of the few of their hits not written by Mick Hucknall. It's really good though. Their album tracks on that album are great too. Another great cover he didn't write was 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye', which was written by Cole Porter. Mick only got to number 1 with one song of his that included a sample from Paul Simon's recordings with Ladysmith Black Mambazo for his superb Graceland album. That song was 'Fairground'. Æx 🙏
I was always under the impression the name came from the football team he supports, Manchester United who are known as the Red Devils, hence Simply Red.
I was once "dragged" to a Simply Red concert by my mother in law. it blew my mind, such a talented singer. I used to think it was sappy music for mums, but no, he's a legendary artist.
Loved 'Holding Back....' and 'If You Don't Know...' from the day on the Radio, and This is Great too! Would love to hear More, You Guys! Thx for the Reaction! :)
When they asked what name he wanted to give to the band, Mick Hucknall who is a mad mad mad Manchester United soccer fan (who in play red shirts) replied "simply RED". He meant that just the word "Red" but the record label or management took his answer to mean SIMPLY RED ......... and that's how the band got their name!!!
I still can't understand why this song as well as the album wasn't a huge hit in the U.S. like everywhere else in the world! Such an amazing pop album!
If you really want to explore Micks vocal range and purity, you should check out their cover of "you make me feel brand new" live at the Sydney Opera House. Absolutely incredible! 👌😅
My favorite Simply Red song. "Money's Too Tight to Mention" and "For Your Babies" are also up there. So many- there's "So Beautiful", "Sunrise", "Holding Back the Years", "Fairground", "Something Got Me Started", "It's Only Love", etc...
Oh yeah, I'd totally forgot about this one of theirs! What a timeless classic. Immensely popular on contemporary easy listening stations over the years. Love it! Great reaction, guys!
I've loved this song from the first time I heard that opening piano line. The vocals are excellent, and the bass is very tasty. YES, please get Amber to react to the soulful, heart-rending _Holding Back the Years_ . Thank you for another lovely reaction, RSR.
I loved your reaction to this, J and Amber. Other tracks to check out by them: "Something Got Me Started", "Fairground", "The Right Thing", "A New Flame", "Jericho", and lastly cover of 'The Valentine Brothers' song "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" but I highly recommend that you do the original first before you do the 'Simply Red' version.
MIck also have a very powerful voice. 20 years ago I was at a concert with him in Copenhagen. Midt concert his song-apparatus broke down and could not be started again. He asked us if it was OK he continued without....and you couldnt tell the difference. Very soulful voice

Simply one of the most amazing and unique voices for all to enjoy. So glad you are bringing Simply Red's music to Light, such a treat to the ear and touching the soul with his blessed gift.
Saw Simply Red live by chance, work colleague had a spare free ticket. His voice blew me away. Any recording does not do this man’s voice credit. Just incredible.
First time I ever heard Mike was when he sang The Thrill Is Gone with BB King, Slash, Ronnie Wood, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi at Royal Albert Hall, been a fan ever since
Very good song, I heard it for the first time on a radio station, my country speaks Spanish but continually broadcasts music in English, which when I heard it I loved it, although it is from 1991, it has a lot of eighties vibes. By the way, they should react to Latin music to vary their channel a little more. If you need help with the translation to understand the context of the song, I will do it. Greetings from Latin America.
Love Simple Red! So glad you did this reaction, I love this song! Thanks for your great channel also 🫶🏼 keep making reaction videos and you’ll hit that million mark 😊
