Deku indirectly saved the todoroki family by saving shoto himself. Deku's actions influenced shoto and now shoto is the hero for his own family.

Save is a strong word. They are still pretty firmly 2 feets in hell. It could have been worse if Shouto did not meet Deku, but realistically Shouto while sees himself in Dabi, he never showed actual incilinations to hurt innocent people and generally d most probably turn out an okay hero..he d just never fully process his past. Shouto showed from the very beinning that he is the sibling that sees his parents and becomes their opposite. Without Deku he d probably just grow away from his family.

Dam near impossible to pretend it could be normal. But with time and effort shattered pieces can be used to forge something different. The goal isnt to replace hatred with forgiveness but to move passed it in a healthy way. Some people can quite literally change themselves.
Something that wouldnt have happened if todoroki never faltered in his goal. Deku caused a chain reaction imagine if no one changed? The entire course would be different even Shigarakis "growth" and group would look different.

    • @blacknoise
      @blacknoise ปีที่แล้ว +23

@@apppletreee he still came to the conclusions himself. It’s not a reaction to punishment. It’s a realization that none of what he did to his family was worth the unceremoniously empty way he ultimately rose to the top. He let himself think it’d all be worth it once he or Shouto earned their way to number one. But he defaulted to that position and all of a sudden he realized… he wasn’t better. He hadn’t earned it. He hadn’t surpassed his own weaknesses in any way. Instead he’d thrust his dysfunction onto a wife and made-and lost-kids to satisfy his ambition… and none of them was worth “oh All Might can’t work anymore lol guess you can have the top spot, man”. He realized he had ruined people’s lives for nothing all on his own.
The 15 years that happened offscreen can’t be used as an argument here. The story as it’s told only focuses on the past year and so that’s the timeline we have to work with in terms of active character development.

@@Nanjeroni exactly. Touya made it clear that everything Enji earned was forfeit (even if his methods were selfish and indiscriminately cruel to his other family), and Natsuo exists to draw a hard boundary of non-forgiveness and show that some things can’t be undone.
The strength of Enji’s character is that he faces these head on and accepts them-public accountability for his private failures, AND the fact that his ongoing efforts may never mend what he tore apart.

From the way she was raised and practically sold, Rei might not have valued herself enough to turn Endeavor down. Endeavor was kind to her before transforming into the monster he became. As many abusers do. And being under that intense situation broke her down even more and made it difficult to handle Toya. So while she takes on some of the blame herself, I can’t fault her too much. That discussion near the end is really interesting cause you're both right in a way. Yes, scandals like this do play a role in the hero rankings. Those ranking are made up of their performance on the job and public approval. So you better believe his rank will be plummeting soon (assuming that he'll survive til then and that the rankings will continue with the Hero Commission destroyed). However, ranks are not updated frequently enough for Dabi's reveal to matter yet. I believe they get updated publicly twice a year, the last one being the one we saw just before Endeavor fought the high end nomu in season 4. So for now he's still number one. But when and if the time comes to update that ranking, there's no way he won't drop.

Dabi hated the women in his family because they ignore his feelings. He was still a child,… calling a child a misogynist is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. His sister even says the reason why she was responsible for Dabi’s childhood was because of her negligence. What dabi intended to say is that “the women in our household cannot understand endeavors eugenic-like thinking when it comes to caring about validating his sons.” The sister clearly doesn’t care about being a hero. So it was fair for dabi to say that given the context. He’s not saying just because they’re women they cannot understand him, it’s cuz his mom and sister don’t understand the want of validation.

The tragedy of this family is that neither parent was ready to be one. For spoiler reasons Endeavour clearly had no way to really know how to be a father and as he said he genuenly had no idea what to do.
Also Toya saying that he always starts crying when he gets exited and crying blood at the tought of what the family is going through shows that even though he said that he should be incapable of crying he is so exited to see Endeavour in pain that he still did it. While Toyas backstory is sad he has basically underminded it by being fully willing to get his family killed just to hurt Endeavour and he has also killed 30 inocent people who had nothing to do with this whole thing. Hell even Deku who basically knows how shit Shotos life was gives Dabi no sympathy for his actions.

The worst part of this is how realistic it is. Most criminals are often just kids from dysfunctional families. I also like how this show allows growth but also shows that the consequences of your past actions wont just disappear once you became a better person. If you cause a car accident coz you drank before driving, you may become the most responsible driver in the future, it wont change the fact that your hurt or even possibly killed sb.
All Touya wamted was the love of his father, the attention of his father, the tragic part is that he still is in a way trying to get the attention of his dad. Endeavour became a better man, but the fact he basically killed his son will never change. The fact he created Dabi will never change. And the only way to go forward is to accept it, bear the sins of his past actions and do better.

28:05 good point from Marketta. Being #1 is such a huge position that it is essentially political. I think that has a lot to do with All Might. He created the idea of a Symbol and changed the whole idea of what being #1 (and even a hero) meant. Mickey’s point about keeping them somewhat separate is interesting too. I think if you remove All Might’s legacy, that’s how people would see the #1 hero: a guy who is the best at something. It’s so complicated and I love it.

i feel like their miss remembering some of the process here. endeavor and rei had fuyumi the daughter before things even started getting rough. so Chris saying rei should have left when endevour screwed the pooch with the first kid is just false. they showed endeavor happily training with toya when fuyumi was already born and natuso was probably close too. because they agreed the kids having siblings to support each other would be good. at this time endeavor still believed toya had the talent and quirk to surpass him. so they already had 3 kids by the time endeavor learned toya's quirk would only hurt him. this is when the down spiral happened.
he stopped training with toya and focusing too much on surpassing all might while hoping maybe he'll have the perfect quirk in his next kid. endeavor is definitely carrying a lot of the fault but fuyumi and natsuo turned out decent even though endeavor didnt pay much attention to them. unlike toya neither had the quirks endeavor wanted so he never trained them or pushed them to try and be heroes. literally toya just had an inferiority complex after endeavor probably said he could be an amazing hero that surpasses all might at a young age before learning his quirk doesnt suit him. but toya didnt accept that and feared one of his siblings would take his place as the one their father thinks can surpass all might. toya was only 8 when he tried to attack baby shoto and up to that point endeavor didnt do anything bad yet, he got frustrated at trying to surpass all might and at the same time trying to prevent toya from his self destructive tendency thats it. at worst he was neglectful but its not like his kids didnt get toys and got to play.
literally toya was the cause for him to even hit rei, and thats where rei's fault in all this comes from. i get the way she was with her father showed she was probably raised to be submissive but thats no excuse for being so weak willed you cant even stand up to your 8 year old son. that woman had zero backbone even when it came to being a mother. she was way too passive, and she knew at the start what this marriage was about. she should have known when it comes to endeavor if one of their kids has the quirk to be top hero thats what endeavor is focused on, so she should have known she would have to step up as a mother to the kids that dont have what endeavor was looking for. from the start endeavor was a hero looking to raise a hero. not a good thing but hey all she had to do was keep the other kids safe and she couldnt stand up to her firstborn son she was cowardly and weak willed. so her trauma that caused her to burn shoto is partly because shes weak willed. sure up till now the todoroki family crap was hidden from public but does anyone really think rei was so dumb she thinks endeavor a public image as a hero would seriously hurt her. all we know and was confirmed is he hit rei one time, one time because she didnt stop toya from going off and training which she knows will hurt toya. all her mental trauma is from one slap and him looking scary thats how weak willed this woman is. not to mention she saw endeavor frustrated about toya and being number 1 hero saw his glare not really aimed at her, then saw toya glare at her, then after toya attacks shoto she sees endeavors reasonably angry face, and oops now she is traumatized by all her kids eyes as well, seriously thats just sickeningly weak willed. so yeah endeavor is a shitty dad and husband but rei also knew thats not what he was aiming for in the first place. rei is a weak willed wife and a passively soft mom, They are both bad parents. and toya was an unstable kid

  • @egozocker14

I do not think at all that toya cared to spend time with his dad. He knew what his dad wanted from the start. To have a son that will be the greatest hero. And thats what he wanted to achieve. I dont know what the parents had to do to stop that "fire" in him and I dont think its as easy to say "Just spend time with him". Endeavor said that he only knows the hero world and that he cant show him anything else and honestly I kinda agree with that. He had to take a step back from his work to possibly help his son finding another way. Thats also why he ran away from his responsibilty and put it all on the mom, who was helpless aswell.
Edit: Also the nr.1 discussion is kinda stupid. Miky explained it pretty much. He IS the best Hero. It doesnt matter what his personal life is like. He finishes the most cases, he captures the most villains, he is the strongest hero. The rest doesnt matter. Also the public doesnt know about the rest so why even mention it. "He should have been more forthcoming about that information" ehhh why?

Fans may disagree with this, but I think that the biggest mistake Endeavor made with Toya was trying to stop him from training. Toya's training should've continued, and here's why. Yes the doctor told Endeavor to have him stop using his quirk but it was clear that it didn't matter what anyone said Toya was not going to stop because of how Endeavor raised him and how it changed Toya mentally. So not only was he going to continue his training but now behind their backs without being supervised, which was even more harmful. Endeavor should've continued Toya's training but making it less quirk focused and lead Toya down a different path and be a close part of his development so that Toya could have a career in something other than being a hero because at the end of the day what Toya wanted was to be acknowledged by his father. Even if it wasn't working towards being a hero, if Endeavor had continued Toya's training but slowly changed it into leading him down a different path that didn't involve him harming himself this whole situation would've been avoided. Just my opinion but I truly think that Toya's training should've continued with Endeavor keeling his eyes on him.

@@jaylenharris343 Well the crux wasn't changed. What I got from subs is that, Fuyumi, being adorably young, was very much worried about Toya burning himself up and wanted him to stop. It came from a place of love and affection and that's a lot of maturity for a toddler. So did the mom and tried her best to make him feel validated, but Toya wouldn't respect her because he thought he was being stripped of his dreams from his mother, who herself couldn't carry any dreams of her due to all the reasons told in the ep, by his pov.
Yet they were helpless solving the main issue with Toya, the invalidation and the feeling of being discarded and abandoned by his father, which could have been solved only be Endeavor himself, which is not their fault, but it was not something Toya could understand at a young age.
Due to their helpless attitude according to Toyas thinking, and mother's disposition along with his childish thinking of his sister not helping with anything, no wonder Toya saw women of the family as useless.

He just wants to spend time with his dad, who gave him the world and then suddenly abandoned him. But because Toya's an angry, hurt child, he doesn't know how to understand and express it. At school, all the kids want to be heroes because it's just childish fantasies for them, but Toya wants to be a hero because his father's Endeavor and Endeavor only has time for heroes.

Honestly I dont think we can definitely say Touya didnt want to be a hero, rather that his priority was receiving the approval of his father, before planning his career, which I think is extremely normal(doesnt mean he didnt want to be a hero, just that it wasnt as important as getting his father to love him). The radical difference here is that Shouto didnt like Enji from early age due to the abuse towards his mom , Touya on the other hand was maybe even a tad too forgiving and loved Enji regardless of everything...which lead him to chasing approval and attention, like most kids do.

Yeah, this was called “The wrong way to put out a fire” for a reason. It’s honestly a perfect way of looking at what Endeavor did to Touya. Endeavor sparked the fire, and instead of giving it calm and gentle water or something to put it out, he basically poured gasoline and paint thinner on it, and then proceeded to ignore the fire and let it build, not realizing that he was not only the root of the problem but also the main one making it worse.
And by the time he did realize it, it’s all just too little too late.

As sb who is currently lawyer, my job is also to "help people in need". NOW realistically how many actually moral people would you expect to be drawn to jobs like: doctors, lawyers, police officers? Ima tell you - not much. Most actually nice people evne if they finished the school they leave the field. Most people who actually enjoy the job are people who are not there for the people but for the fame/money/reputation. We have a saying as lawyer (and a lot of doctors I know use it too) - "if you actually care for the people, you will lose your mind in this job". The hero work d realsitically end up very similarly - it d attract people who like control, respect and money. Hence why we see so many people leave the job now that it aint as profitable.
Aint saying Enji cannot be a good person, we all see he did work on himself, but him being good at his job does not mean he is a good person. So while I do agree with yoru conclusion of him earnign his spot, I do not agree with the way you got there.

Toya's misogynistic comment isn't random. His views on the women in his family come from a place of contempt. The mom is popping out hybrids one after another, and Endeavor has no plans on Fuyumi inheriting his ambition. Toya has no one to share in his pain, despite having multiple siblings, and he hates his mother for being complacent. A point he makes this very clear in their last conversation. In his eyes, she has no grounds to speak on finding his own path or future prospects when her future was set in stone the moment she was "sold" into being Endeavor's spouse and agreeing to the Quirk Marriage. It's cruel but that doesn't mean anything to a child who's struggling to validate his existence every day after being deemed a failure.

Honestly, when this stuff was happening in the manga, there were some really yikes takes from people. People saying that Touya didn't have it so bad because Endeavor never abused him. Like, news flash, neglect is a form of abuse. Not just neglect, emotional trauma. It felt like people were trying to shift all of the blame away from Endeavor and onto the victim, Touya. Because there are so many ways Endeavor could've handled this differently.
First, you should never try to live out your failures in life through your children. Side note, Endeavor seeking out Rei to create a powerful weapon is so yikes. It's not an act of love. It's an act of seeking power. Moving on though, once he found out Touya's quirk harmed his body when he went overboard, there are several things he could've done.
    A. Tell Touya that he'll love him regardless on if he can surpass All Might and that he loves him for who he is as a person and not his quirk
    B. Tell him that he can still be a great hero, just not the Number 1. And that he's fine with it because Touya tried his best
    C. Tell Touya that he can still be the Number One hero but only if he finds a way to stop or minimize the damage done to himself(like how the Nurse at UA told Izuku to find less self-destructive ways to use his power)
    D. Actually talk to Touya and stop expecting the problem to just go away, especially since he created it
If all of that fails and he still decides to have more children, there's always one final option(hypothetical if Endeavor had treated Touya somewhat better)
    E. Stop training Shoto and Touya separately. Some heroes become partners to cover each other's weaknesses. He could show them both love and have Shoto cool off Touya when he begins to overheat and have Touya go for more powerful fire blasts that Shoto can't do. Raise them as sibling heroes
But he didn't do that. He instead ignored most of his family. When he wasn't ignoring them, he was harshly training Shoto or yelling or hitting Rei. Touya saw that he was born and tossed aside for his father's ambition. He revealed that he'd been watching his family after he burned up too. And he likely saw that Endeavor didn't change even after his "death". Endeavor got worse. He was replaced in life. And his death didn't change anything. He probably questioned why he was born at all. Until there was nothing inside him but emptiness and hatred. This was the wrong way to put out a fire. And that's how Dabi was born.

I appreciate that they hold no punches in showing that Endeavor really did become a monster. The art and direction shows him fully as a domestic abuser. "Why didn't you stop Toya, Rei?" Endeavor screams. "Why didn't you do this one thing? Why did you make me hit you?"
Endeavor as he is now is fundamentally a different person, but unlike many other monsters-turned-heroes (perhaps most iconically Vegeta) MHA never lets you forget that Endeavor did horrible things and that his past has inexcusable crimes.
Best of all, of course, is that Endeavor himself knows and agrees with this. He wants to make things right not to redeem himself or seek forgiveness (he sees himself as irredeemable and unforgivable), but because it's the only thing he can do in light of all the wrongs he's done.
It's proven by his dream: for his family to be happy, he cannot be with them. Now that he's ACTUALLY trying to be a good father and husband, because of his past the only way he can do that is to stay away from his family.

Endeavor never wanted to be the number 1 hero, he simply wanted to be the strongest, and all might was the wall in front of him. He even told all might if he wanted to be number 1 he could of acted all friendly and played the lovable fool like him. After all might retired that massive wall in front of him collapsed and he could finally see the pain he cause his family because he was now the strongest hero

    • @theblasblas

I feel like just saying he wanted to be the strongest lacks a bit of nuance. Because he could've just trained his quirk if he only wanted to be strong, without spending time doing hero work.
From his actions we can tell that Endeavor truly wanted to save people, so I think a better way of putting it is that he wanted to be the Best Hero, the hero who could save anyone and beat any villain. It's just that to Endeavor that translates to "Strongest Hero".
If I have any criticism of Endeavor's arc so far is that we never really spend any time on WHY Endeavor wants to be the strongest hero, there's no explicit scenes like All Might explaining his rationale for being the Symbol of Peace. So all that one can do is analyze his actions.

This is an incredibly complex episode with lots of nuanced emotions. I was CONSIDERING going through this whole thing point by point and cover the in depth nuance, but it got SO long even I realized, “No one will read this.” And I scrapped it. XD there goes an hour of writing. So I’ll just say the bare bones.
This STARTED as a quirk marriage, this STARTED as a passion project to surpass All-Might. But became a large scale effort to prevent the golden child Touya Todoroki from endlessly pursuing a route in life that would most certainly lead to his own death. Each effort got blunter and blunter making another nail in his coffin instead of a deterrent and accidentally creating a sociopathic murderer hell bent on destroying what is now a somehow more functional family now than ever before. Rei hated Endeavor, but has come to realize she never took it on herself to understand him. (And won’t give him leeway.) Her mere presence from a situation she DID have the power to walk away from and take the kids with her is the sign that she DOES still love Endeavor. And I see that flower she brings in as a “Let’s start over.” Not for the kids, but for her and Enji.
Endeavor has INCREDIBLY weak empathy making NONE of his methods work correctly because he didn’t use them with enough care. Even though each choice DOES actually have logic behind it. The ONLY thing that you can tell how much he empathized with was the absolute terror of Touya’s quirk recoil. He knew EXACTLY how much it hurt him because he considers his OWN recoil the exact reason he’s not Number 1. And as All-Might got better, it showed the gap for Endeavor, but also how hard Touya was pushing himself. He was struggling in vein to stop this, but didn’t have the emotional capability to do it. He also has among the WORST emotional traits. The trait of showing sorrow and fear as anger. He is DESPERATE to not show vulnerability. And I think that is EXACTLY why Rei knows he IS trying. Because it’s a mask. And he can’t maintain it forever. This crash is years too late for the kids to see. But considering what kind of man Endeavor is, it also shouldn’t be surprising it took til THIS happened.
There isn’t a single family member that doesn’t feel guilt of the events. But there also isn’t a single one that doesn’t desperately want to fix things. Natsuo is the MOST resentful of his dad, but even that doesn’t spell to me he will cut him off once Touya is stopped.
The chances of Touya Todoroki having the ultimate irony of being ANOTHER half cold-half hot wielder is TERRIFYINGLY high he could have grown to in his adulthood. I have been curious about how he cried when he got excited. And that may have been melted ice for all we know. His hair STRAIGHT UP matches Shoto for a year or so. Natsuo lost his red hair, and Fuyumi stayed the same. Touya’s went through a LARGE transition. And while Shoto’s hair has no connection to his quirk, (DNA is not constrained to one side of your body. If he has both, it doesn’t mean it HAS to stay on one side.) that doesn’t mean that it’s exactly the same for the other siblings. But it would be the ULTIMATE irony and nothing would hurt the Todoroki’s more that he ACTUALLY transforms his quirk more. (This is an unproven theory, but I do VERY much so believe in it.)
And the final thing regarding the Todoroki’s. It’s important to say only a victim can forgive an aggressor. Whether we feel it’s deserved or not is irrelevant. And it seems the Todoroki’s are inching closer to that point, even if Dabi obviously isn’t. So it’s worth pointing that reality out. And exploring why they feel he COULD earn it if he tries harder to be communicative and understanding.
But if there’s one thing above all I love, it is the mere MENTION of the term One For All blows the lid of more than a CENTURY of hiding from AFO, the government, the public, and all other villains. The MOMENT Shigaraki says where is OFA, Endeavor asked what it was. And Deku IMMEDIATELY ran from the evacuation site and Shigaraki went after him INSTANTLY. It wasn’t the extra quirks that gave him away, it wasn’t Bakugo revealing anything, it wasn’t Deku being registered quirkless in elementary school and middle school. It was JUST the fact that AFO found out Izuku Midoriya was the 9th wielder ALL THE WAY back in season 3. He used Search and shouted at All-Might. The worst case scenario had ALREADY been laid bare 3 seasons ago. It’s a MIRACLE it lasted this long. But the unknown connection to All-Might, AFO’s grudge with the man. Deku being hunted. And just…there’s no more hiding it. Thank GOD only the Todoroki’s have become aware with the top 3 heroes. Everyone else just believes it’s a connection with AFO. Which it is INTEGRALLY. But Deku becoming the new Symbol of Peace and All-Might’s successor HAS to be prevented from being FULLY leaked because then Deku gets blamed for the war itself. Because ALL OF THIS. Was for the sole purpose of hunting him down to kickstart the Dark Age AFO created before the era of the 4th holder.
It breaks my heart seeing Bakugo in a state where he likely would have barged into Deku’s hospital room and he would have screamed at a comatose Deku. (Such loving friends willing to do anything for each other right guys? I know he’s made strides, but that is PURELY Bakugo development. Not their relationship. I have to say it again.) But Uraraka and Iida would ABSOLUTELY be in the hospital room waiting for Deku to wake up if All-Might hadn’t asked for the room to himself so he can try and sense the OFA conversation. (Not at ALL a signal this man might just still have the prime power. It’s ANOTHER signal I can’t ignore.) It would make it SO much harder to see because the two of them care for Deku’s well being more than any other student.
And last but not least, get me a poster of Iida holding his chest. Because I am throwing that on the Iida chop gold medal pile. What the hell is he doing? I don’t know but I love it.

I love that no path in My Hero is a straight line. A lot of Shonens would’ve had Endeavor have a redemption arc culminating at his victory over the high end. Here, he wows the world, truly becomes number one. Then his family resists him rightfully. Natsu, the most resentful, even starts to open up to him. Then Dabi happens and the country largely hates him and the dam breaks. Endeavor making this a quest for atonement is really powerful and they don’t shy away from showing how heinous he used to be.

Endeavor decided to be good back in season 3 when All Might retired. He decided to face what he did, when things was technically good for him, not when things went bad with Dabi coming back.
Endeavor said back in season 5, he is not here for forgivness, he is here for atonement.

Choose to go along with her greedy parents wish, quietly let herself get used for someone elses dream, child speaks back at you about your life which is 100% true but outta line. She should've taken some form of charge of her life, nothing good will come if you do nothing.

I think the saddest part of all this is that both Enji and Rei were just... afraid. Of course Enji is the MOST to blame but essentially he was AFRAID to face what he did to his son, and Rei in turn was AFRAID to look at a son who hated her. And that fear, and essentially cowardice on Enji's part, is what caused them to turn away. The two of them had their first kid AT AGE 20, they were themselves CHILDREN, and by the time Shoto's born they're not even 30. This isn't an excuse, btw, but it does show how ill prepared they were to be parents, thinking that having more kids would solve their problems, and the kids have suffered as a result.

One thing I learned when researching trauma counseling is that the habits and trauma that was inflicted on you between ages 1-5 literally influence your subconscious behavior for the rest of your life. At Toya’s age, what was instilled in him all that time literally still effects Dabi now and that’s a very realistic depiction that doesn’t really get better without intensive self work and counseling.

Thank you for pointing out the profession vs personal. And no it is not a political move, Endeavor is the #2 because of his stats and the agency he created, he is very good at his job and we saw first hand during the intership in S5. In sheer number he beats Almight. There is an argument to be made of how many lives he has saved vs how many he is responsible for due to Dabi, and even then the numbers most ppl would agree for the "greater good" that he is better to have as a hero all together for society. Also great what was pointed out, it is not up to anyone else other than the ones he hurt, his family, to decide how to move on with him. And we have already seen Endeavour wanting and striving to atone, not asking for forgiveness. This was not his starting point, it was when he became #1 and when had to rethink everything that came with that position and how he got to there, reclecting and looking back, all already shown and set up 2 seasons ago. The only reason he never surpassed to #1 was because of what Almight symbolized. And look how great of a system that turned out. The failure in their soceity all stems back to Almight.

Endeavor's tale is not one of redemption its one of atonement. In the manga Endeavor never hits Rei its only implied that he might have. Also most people miss this but the abuse only starts after Toya kept hurting himself not before. Its Heavily implied they were actually a happy family up to the point were Toya's powers started burning him which is where their entire story stems from. We come into the backstory with Endeavor already at wits end, he's been telling Toya to stop but he won't listen every decison Endeavor makes after this was his way to make Toya stop as we can clearly see "talking" to him wasn't working. Every decison we see Endeavor make albeit poor decisons weren't truely made out of malice or a lack of love for his family they out of his inability to handle the situation in front of him and thinking he was doing the right thing by ignoring his son hence the name "the wrong way to put out a fire".

    @ManSeekingMeaning ปีที่แล้ว +1

Endeavor deserves less animosity than he gets. I know The Normies and most fans may disagree with me and that's fine. We're all entitled to our opinions based off our unique pasts and perspectives.
My two cents? The buck has to stop somewhere. Speaking as a victim of parental/domestic abuse myself, there is no denying the power ones childhood has on cultivating your character. Abuse and neglect especially. But to write a blank check of sorts for one's actions because of that past - which is what I consider some viewers calling Dabi a tragic victim after he knowingly and gleefully kills dozens upon dozens of innocents with tertiary-at-best relevance to his childhood trauma or source of animosity - is a very slippery slope.
Endeavor was obsessive. Endeavor was abusive. Endeavor was short-sighted. Endeavor was ill-prepared. Endeavor was a bad husband and father. That is a fact and I certainly don't condone his approaches or actions during that time.
That being said, he was never malicious in his actions. For those who've had parents or guardians who took enjoyment out of abuse, power tripping, etc, it's a BIG difference. And if those types of people can be seen as redeemable after a 'come-to-Jesus' moment by some of their kids, I don't see how this would be an exception. Also, Endeavor has never made a remotely sexist comment, and in contrast, seems to hold characters like Burnin', Ryukyu, and Mirko in high regard / have faith in them. His calloused approach to his wife is less about misogyny (she willingly accepted the proposal/arrangement), and more about his personal lack of affection, empathy, and romance, so blinded was he by his goal. Toya was just spittin' his own opinions there.
It's clear in this episode that Endeavor did what he thought was best in each circumstance, and it was merely his ignorance and lack of patience/tolerance that escalated problems further. As the title suggests, the wrong way to put out a fire is to ignore it. This leads me to seriously question what Endeavor's home life was like growing up. What made him the emotionally stunted, obsessive, reckless, angry man we see now. Because of Toya is a product of his father, wouldn't we then have to say Enji's anger and obsession was the product of his? Again, where does it end? And how does that same man who failed his family of five not balance out with saving thousands of lives (literally) throughout his career. Even if he did it solely for prestige and praise or financial standing, he saved lives and inspired hope. Is there some karmic scale to take into account when thinking about 'justice'? Most people - myself included, honestly - would like to say "NO" but are we being genuine in doing so?
The reason I enjoy Endeavor as a character so much is BECAUSE he's not a bad man; he is a deeply flawed one. The circumstances in this situation make it impossible to view the Todoroki family drama as purely black or white. If Enji is dark gray, the rest of his family are varying shades of gray as well, including Toya himself. To dump it all at Endeavor's feet exclusively is, frankly, willfully ignorant bordering on emotionally obtuse.
Endeavor, as his name suggests, is a character that will likely always be chasing a goal. It once was supremacy, being number one. Now - until his death - it will be atonement. That doesn't make him a good guy, sure. But it certainly doesn't make him a bad one either.

The number 1 hero is someone who is the best is saving lives/stopping villains, and is also popular among polls. Endeavor obtained the number 2 spot and then the number 1 retired, giving Enji the spot by default.
Endeavor didn't get the #1 spot on his own terms(skill and recognition). He hardly had time to process the change. Surely if the country knew about his dirty laundry public perception of him would've been different. But we can't really say he became #1 while deviously hiding his past or something like that. It was thrust on him. Like Dabi said, once Enji became #1 he really started trying to fix things with the fam to fit the title, albeit with little success of course.

Shoto's mom did take her responsibilities for what happened and she worked and healed herself and her association to her abuser with her kids. She could have up and left Endeavour, yes, but leaving an abusive situation is not easy even slightly. If you look at real statistics about abusive relationships and the amount of times the victims will choose to go back should be enough to know that it changes your brain chemistry and its ability to make good decisions. Once you add children to it as well, its a whole different situation, especially in Japan where the family unite is basically held on a pedestal to always uphold for your reputation. She was used as a baby machine and house maid, you can literally see how Endeavour treated her. She was responsible for keeping the children occupied and away from him and his "successor" whether it was Toga or Shoto. She wasn't even really given her own identity for most of her life. I think the blame is 99% on Endeavour.
