I think, officially, she was Miss Nevada 1959. The Miss America Pageant winner was traditionally given the crown for the following calendar year.

@@IndianOutlaw1870 that is correct. EVERY state (or in some cases, city until @ 1963) representative being announced is a "Miss" for the year the actual pageant takes place (so in this case they are all Miss state 1959). Because the majority of the time that Miss America was spending during her reign was during the calendar year following her crowning, the MAO made a slight change in the winners title. It is known as post-dating. It began with Yolande Betbeze who won in 1950, crowned as "Miss America 1951", with the previous winner from the year before being Jacque Mercer, Miss America 1949. (but post-dating briefly changed in 2006 with a venue changed from AC to Vegas in 2006, and a delay caused by securing tv coverage, the reign of Deirdre Downs MA 2004 was extended 4 months to Jan 2006; then with a brief return to A/C in 2013, post dating returned briefly, with the outgoing winner, Mallory Hagan having the shortest ever reign of 8 months).

It is an amazing 👏 opportunity that is being presented here. Where did this particular TH-cam provider find these gems of history?

This was the first pageant to include a delegate from all 50 states--Alaska and Hawai'i had entered the Union earlier.

Wow. Thank you so much for uploading these pageants. When I was younger I grew watching miss American in the late 1980s and beyond. This 1960 pageant just shows me how far we become. No women of color in this pageant which probably could not compete until the 1970s. Still cool to watch how these pageants were back in the day.

I loved that Mary Ann Mobly placed the crown on her Sorority Sister. I bet she was honored to do so, and I bet Lynda Lee Mead was even more honored.

Announcing the top 10 and top 5 in alphabetical order ruins a lot of the suspense.

Miss Canada competed at Miss America from 1947 to 1962. Miss Canada, Margaret Marshall almost won Miss America 1947. She came in 2nd runner-up and won the preliminary swimsuit. th-cam.com/video/OjTLSkRu3PQ/w-d-xo.html

The first African American state representative that I remember came from Nebraska, in the 1970's. That was a surprise. Did Alaska and Hawaii only have white women for reps? I would not think so.They would have been "native" backgrounds, and Asian, or mixed. If not, then, this is illustrative, of problems.

My choice would've been Wisconsin - talent good, and vg personality. I found the talent of the top 10 very weak this year. You'd think the contestants from big states like Calif and NY would be better dancers. OMG - Washington should've stuck with the opera stuff - yikes - 'I Can't Say No' was horrible. Miss's talent. - not great, but at least she showed some personality

@@kk419badge ITA! Miss Wisconsin had it all; and it was so evident. And my state, California was a finalist in the1960 pageant. I too, thought that Miss Wisconsin, towered over her rivals in the 1974 contest.

@@willnill7946 My point is that it is obvious that you support the Proud Boys. That is a Shame. But you are entitled to holding on your "make America Great Again" when the Miss America pageant girls were all White.

White people created this nation. Invented and built just about everything we have. So if white people want to put on a Miss America pageant and not be "inclusive" than why cry about it.
A question, do you think America is a better place now than it was back when this show was aired ? I'm old enough to have seen it then and I'll take '59.

The days when Miss America was not racially diverse. Over 20 years before Vanessa Williams would change Miss America history.
