    • @akaNoraKnits

      This seriously makes me feel so much better. It’s all personal preference at the end of the day. I’ve found that even in my infancy of knitting I really do enjoy a pattern that falls somewhere in between just being thrown a chart and a hope, and having my hand held the whole way. Totally depends on the situation!

    Oh no! I’ve always thought the Ranunculus looked complicated and I’ve been scared to start 😳 you’ve traumatized me and I’ll provably never knit it. Ha!!

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! Well I don’t want that!!!! I don’t think it’s necessary to run in the opposite direction if you like the look of the pattern! I would recommend, however, doing a dry run first! It could be very helpful to whip out some scrap yarn or something that frogs kindly, and just skipping to the special stitch section! (Or just skip the project altogether if it’s not for you! 😜)

    When I cast on anything over 50, I use markers at 20-stitch intervals during cast-on so I do not have to go back over and over to make sure of how many stitches I have. For just starting out, you are doing so wonderfully and boy are you courageous with the choice of knits you are doing. I am a self-taught knitter and I chose to do a mohair hoodie for my first project. Wow, I went in on the deep end for sure, but it has continued to help push me to work on things that make me challenge my skills. Keep up the good work.

    I love the smell of wool, very much. When I have to "rip out" several times, especially where there is a lace type pattern, once I "know" what I've done wrong I start with fresh yarn, and add in the used yarn once I get to a less complex part. It looks better, and helps me enjoy the knitting more.

    Hello! I’m a fairly new knitter and recently took an the ranunculus…silly me decided to knit two at once because I couldn’t decide which yarn to use 😂. I also figured learning new stitches and techniques by doing it twice would help it stick. I’m finally at the point to split for the sleeves. I found this helpful knit a long helper from Podcaster Sun Dragon Tips & Tricks called “ Knitting: ranunculus knit-a-long assistance” and it was sooo helpful. Hope you find it helpful too!

    This made me laugh so hard!! I've been there!! An easy way to figure out stitch counts without calculus: Do the wide neckline since you know your gauge is smaller, then knit past the patterning in the yoke, measure your gauge on some of the stockinette sections. Take whatever stitch count you have per inch in your gauge and decide how wide around you want your sweater to be, say 50". Multiply 50" times your stitch count per inch, then knit whatever size has closest stitch count in the body to your target number after splitting for sleeves. Waaay easier than all the crazy math. Just follow the instructions for that size.

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much what I wound up doing after taking the looooooong way around 😂 I’m glad I got a good laugh out of it!

  • @donnacohen-avery8086
    @donnacohen-avery8086 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I knit my first Ranunculus recently. I also used size 7 needles. I opted for the wider neckline because I thought with the smaller gauge, that would be best. With the gauge I got, I had to knit the size 4 to get the 46” bust. I also had to start this pattern three or four times. I just wasn’t understanding the way some of the directions were worded. I wound up watching her videos for a few things and that was very helpful. I’m also a lefty mirror knitter, so that adds another level of complexity. I’ve been knitting for 40 years, so, it wasn’t just you. In the end, I love my sweater. I checked my gauge when it was time to choose a size. That worked out well. I wound up doing no decreases in the arms and I did twisted rib for the cuff instead of the I cord. (I would not have been able to get my hand through if I did that.). I’m adding a tip for the loops. When I first did them, I interpreted where to insert the needle incorrectly. If is says between stitches three and four, it means three and four not yet knit. Does that help? I can see from what you did, that you made the same mistake I did by inserting for the loop too soon.

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is so helpful! Thank you for sharing! I realized after looking more closely that you are 100% right about the loop stitches. Lesson learned! Thank you!!!

    It’s great to see a new knitter who’s as adventurous as you!!As well as finding a step by step guide for the ranunculus, consider making a small swatch (two or three pattern repeats) to try all the different textures before you have to knit them in the pattern, it really helps with getting your head around how a pattern or stitch works.

    • @msadm1225
      @msadm1225 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree. For me, swatching is equally about getting gauge (or a fabric i like) and about practicing the stitch patterns. If you don't swatch new patterns to practice, you may have a noticeably different fabric at the beginning of the project as opposed to an area that was knit much later

    • @anglomallorquina5898
      @anglomallorquina5898 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@msadm1225 When I first started knitting I thought swatches were for practicing the pattern. My first garment knit had all sorts of gauge issues and I finally realised why my mother used to measure her test squares.

    I struggled with the Ranunculus the first time I knit it too. Like you I wanted a tighter gauge an that resulted in a small neckband which the silk scarf trick would have been very handy for. After trying to wear it a few times and feeling like it was a little constricting, I did sweater surgery and cut off and re-knit the neckband. I have made another one which was a much smoother process. You have had your practice runs so you are going to ace this time. Love the podcast 🥺

    I am a fan of double knit button band. It's easy and very satisfying because it makesnthe cardigan look clean and polished.

    You’re doing great!!! Helpful time-saving tip: skip the short rows on the front! I like the way it fits way better with it then and it makes it easier to tell which side is the front!

    Nora! Your FOs and WIPs are gorgeous!! Wow you’ve been knitting for less than a year! Your dress!! I love it, and it’s perfect on you! - yes I’m shouting! 😊 Once you get the hang of the Ranunculus you will love it - love the color of the yarn you chose. I tell everyone the pattern is actually one page that’s it! I also found that a couple hours of focus and poof you’re on to the body - the stitches are not difficult as you know, they just take focus. I hope you end up loving it. Thank you for sharing!!!

    Nora, what a delightful channel ...I am so glad I found you!
    I have been a knitter for decades ...yet I struggled with parts of the Ranunculus pattern. Sun Dragon on You Tube to the rescue. She walks you through a different part of the sweater in each video as I believe part of a KAL she had with her store. Yetvshe carefully guards the integrity of this paid patternm. I feel sure I would not be enjoying my Ranuncukus today if it were not for her... nor would I have wool-in-waitijg for 2 more!

    I recently knit the ranunculus so i understand what you mean by it being overwhelming. I’ve used the videos by Sun Dragon tips and tricks on the ranunculus. They walk through every stitch and show you every detail, without specific stitch counts. They did those video’s for a KAL so they are very thorough. ❤

    I fudged a couple of times on my first Ranunculus. Lace is my nemesis. I always miscount something lol.
    I have knit 4 of them at this point, and I have the original pattern and then the updated pattern where it is divided into more sizes. I have used both patterns and in your circumstance, I would definitely increase neckline stitches and knit a size or 2 bigger than you would normally knit because you are using a smaller size needle.
    The key to the Ranunculus stitches looking like they do in the samples is in the blocking. You'll get it. Don't give up.

    Oh Nora, you are hilarious.. I love your ability to laugh about mishaps and your laughter makes happier when I turn on knitting podcasts to de-stress from my day.
    I also watch Well Loved Knits and she knit 2 ranunculus sweaters and she changed the yoke a bit on the second one. I'm sure you already know that , but just in case you were comparing your yoke to her modified one... but most importantly, lacework can look messy and wrong until it's blocked. Having said that, I have not yet knit a Ranunculus but I have it on my list. I believe I will join you in this venture and together we can figure the pattern out. 😊

      Awww thank you!!! I always try to reframe my thinking when it comes to something new in knitting…90% of this sweater is knit stitches! We know how to knit stitch in our sleep…that means that only 10% will be new and that is definitely doable! Plus, you can always practice and pull it out again! I believe you will do it! Please let me know how it turns out 💛

    I love the color of your ranunculus. I’m now knitting my first one. I watched Sun Dragon knits tutorial for the wrapped stitches…but yours look right to me. I went down one needle size to a US 9. Didn’t want the open fabric that size 10 gave, or theat much positive ease. Size 7 needle seems pretty small, IDK. Good luck!

    I agree with others that have suggested the Sun Dragon Tip & Tricks Ranunculus Assistance Video Tutorial series. Rebecca does a fantastic job of explaining and guiding you through each section of the pattern and it's included variations (the different necklines, the different sleeve lengths, etc). Aside from the Ranunculus series she has technique tutorials you may find useful as well. Stick with it and good luck!

      Thank you so much! I’m the kind of person who skips past the “mock-up” in sewing and just starts cutting the good fabric…apparently that applies to my knitting as well. After spending a little more time with the project, I actually just gave someone else this exact advice 😂 it just required a little more trial and error and then it wasn’t so bad after all!
