Hello from Canada 🇨🇦 😊. I'd say, after your Thanksgiving, work on your red dress with the intent of a short dress. Then after Christmas you can go back and knit more length for Valentine's Day 😊
Such a great idea! I will definitely be playing that one by ear and see how far I can get. With your idea, it’s like two dresses for the price of one! I like it!
It is such a relief when you finally let go of the imaginary timeline on a wip that's making you feel a little defeated. It's not worth it if it stresses you out or makes you feel bummed that something is taking you "so long". It's not a race. It's slow fashion. Made with love and care 😘
For your vest: I recommend the Islandic Bind off for finishing the raw hem (just purling one round and then do the bind off). It only adds a little width to the west and gives a very nice finish. It is slightly looser than an I-cord edge, but tighter than a ribbed hem so it reduces the arm hole size a little. I recently finished the Tetra Slipover and this bind off turned out beautifully.
What about doing reverse single crochet (crab stitch) around the arm holes? I think that it would pair well with the ruffles. But I first thought of I cord too.
Another great episode. Enjoying your courage to tackle and figure out new things! Very inspiring.I love all the creativity you put into your podcast. Easily becoming my fav and I seem to notice new details with each episode. Love it!
I love that you're modifying patterns, honestly -- there's nothing bad about that at all! Modifying patterns customizes your garment just for you and makes it into something that is perfect for you! And what is knitting garments but customizing things to be perfect for you? The fact that you're WILLING to modify patterns to your own preferences as a still-fairly-new knitter is incredible and so, so cool. Don't be afraid to keep doing it!! :)
It’s so funny, I feel like I rarely see people making changes to patterns, but I am someone who just gets a vision of what I want and the pattern is the roadmap to get there as easily as possible. Doesn’t mean I won’t take my own detours along the way! I am sure that if I felt comfortable enough designing from scratch, I would, but this is just the beginning! Thank you 💛
I often modify my patterns because I have a slightly different vision. Sometimes those mods turn out great and sometimes not so much. But being a fairly new garment knitter, I have always learned a ton from those "failed" modifications and that will help me in the future!
Vest….in the future, if you’d like larger size, simply apply your own measurements to the listed gauge. i.e., there are ratios in the stitch counts listed, and you can just multiply by the same ratio to get any larger size prior to starting the project. And…just finish out the sleeve with a crochet slip stitch with a small hook.
Aww thanks for sharing I am glad my advice help. I will definitely be following on your holiday dress journey and wish it turns out better then you expect!
I've been knitting for... a long time lol, and I use baggies to help manage multiple balls of yarn in a project and keep things tidy lol. Love the podcast (Osi is utterly adorable!), and koodos for being so fearless in your knitting! Your red dress will be beautiful regardless of when you finish it, along with all your future projects!
Seriously, those of us who are “endowed”🙄😉🤣 it is a real issue to get the bust line, underarm placement, correct shoulder alignment and under bust measurements aligned for a good fit. So many times, I see a correct bust line knit but then under bust to shoulders are too big and the garment doesn’t look crisp. Good idea to start measuring and looking at your knit piece to other garments that fit you well. I’m knitting my first sweater and am a bit 🤔😝obsessed about this issue. You approach could be a great solution if you pick a pattern one size “smaller” for your bust but in more alignment with the rest of your figure. This is a great way to learn.
I am working on the Harlow V-neck version by Caidree in a Garnet Wool of the Andes Worsted. Then the Dornie by Rebecca Clow is being worked in a dark forest green. I am also working on the Festival Yoke Cardigan by Skeindeer Knits in Holst Garn Supersoft in a dark blue and white. I left any specific holiday themes out and am just knitting snowflakes, snowmen, and trees so I can wear it all winter. I am also working on hats and dishcloths for gifts. I have the Gib by Andrea Mowry in a Royal Blue color that is being set aside until I am done with my Christmas gift knits.
@akaNoraKnits you decided to make a dress for Christmas and I just couldn't decide what sweater and what color I wanted to wear. 🤣 My projects probably, all together, will take less time than knitting the dress. I also am a stay at home mom who has huge chunks of time that I can take to just sit and knit. I hope that you are able to get the dress done when you want it finished. I think it will be really lovely 😍
The dress looks amazing and I bet it will suit you very well. I would never ever wear something like this as my style is extremely simple and rather masculine. Usually if a pattern has "little details" that is already too much for my comfort. HOWEVER that doesn't mean I can't admire patterns like this dress for its design and beauty and I love to see those on others. So I am very excited to follow along. I hope it turns out great for you! ☺
Thank you so much!!! I am constantly in awe of things people make for themselves, especially when it is not my own taste! It’s fun to appreciate those details from afar!
I’m loving your podcasts - thanks for always bringing some extra joy to a Saturday! With the vest, I strongly recommend looking at the armhole bind-off on Kutovakika’s Sailor Swift top - she shares the technique in the TH-cam tutorial. It’s a 5 stitch i-cord with a purl, but it lays flat and looks really minimal and neat. Good luck getting it all finished!
I’m so glad! I will try and get another shot comparing the two different colors of brushed alpaca that I have to see if my feelings about their texture differences are true!
I spent this video undoing the sewn bind-off for the front half of the split hem on my cozy classic light since I (not very smartly) did it before the back and then lost yarn chicken on the back 😅
@@akaNoraKnits ahhh….you are a stylist and at this time of the year I’m thinking is reaaaaally busy for you. Just don’t put too much pressure dear one, that’s a lot of faux cables (I think). But with your timeframe calculations from the first dress you might make it, providing you have the time…that’s a lot of fabric to make. I’m all here for it though, sending you light & love💐
So looking forward to see your vest. The variegated yarn is looking so good ❤️ I need to focus on a dress for my daughter and don’t know how to work on everything else while I just want that dress on my needles right now!😊
Nora, you may need to think about whether you need more yardage for your Christmas red dress since you changed your choice of size ( the size you bought for and the size you decided to knit). Good luck, and I look forward to seeing you in it!
Another great video! I love hearing you work through the modifications of your projects… It’s like a sense of accomplishment when it’s all figured out 👍🏼👍🏼
Not sure you are asking for ideas on your vest armhole edge but I was thinking a quick way to finish the edge would be a round of single crochet. It’s very pretty and festive, great work on the v-neck!
Ohhh it kinda sounds like the brushed alpaca was burnt during the dye process. I definitely have accidentally done that to mohair and it sounds like a very similar texture.
Ahhhhhh! It does seem like something funky is going on with the red vs the grey that I have! Once it’s worked up, it’s really fine. It just doesn’t exactly look luxe
Impressive computation on that red dress, Nora. It’s going to be beautiful on you! You could add structure to your bodice by inserting two purl stitches where the side seams would lay and then mattress stitching across that bridge - like Birch and Lily’s latest cardigan knit. Also, ‘ratty mohair’ 😂😂😂
Hello! And happy Thanksgiving from Texas 😊 I'm working on the most challenging part of my current WIP- decreasing while maintaining a cable pattern when the decreases aren't charted 😬 But it looks like the second time is going better than the first. 😅 The pattern is called the Brescul vest and I'm making it for my son as part of his Christmas outfit. 😊
Oh my goodness, your red Christmas dress sounds like it'll be amazing. I can't wait to see how it turns out! That dress pattern is stunning, and I LOVE the red color you chose.
Consider doing the icord on the vest front but skip every 3rd stitch or so. It would tighten up the whole without being noticeable. I would do the arm hole before you finish the body just incase you pull up the front.
Two thoughts: on the vest for the armholes-I had a similar experience with a drop shoulder top I knit last summer. Different situation, but I was shocked at how much a short ribbing tightened it up. An I-cord bind-off might be all you need, but I was also thinking that you might add some short rows to bring the bottom of the armpit up, assuming that didn’t increase your bust size and make the fabric bunch. On the fabulous Christmas dress, did you double-check your yarn yardage in case you need to find more in the same dye lot since you’re adjusting gauge? Love watching your podcast-congrats on nearly 5k already 🎉
Thank you! That is so so smart! I actually think that after trying it on it’s not quite as deep as I thought it was so I might be in the clear- but I will definitely add that to my toolbox for when I need it! On Christmas dress yardage-I did order extra and figured I could plan to knit until it’s gone if I am running into a shortage! Th# k you so so much! I cannot even believe how far we’ve come. I genuinely am just so grateful 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Nora. I'm making the stripe hype sweater, but I'm using Drops brushes alpaca silk heels double and it's like working with spider webs. And the 2.0US needles on broken ruin fifa is a *pita*! I'm forking now in the Salty Days sweater and I'm living it and the yarn and the color. I can't stop but I'm on sleeve island on the striped one. I'm going to download the counter app and I'm going to do a steps a day! Maybe 2!❤
I’m crossing my fingers and sending positive vibes that you’re knitting on your Thanksgiving vest goes like the wind! I’m excited to see how things go with your Christmas dress - the color is so perfect and festive! Hope you have an amazing weekend 🎉
Thank you for reminding me of Drops! I am getting ready to buy for Purl SoHo’s Sweatshirt Sweater and want to do it in a mohair/NSW wool combo and I’ve been pricing yarns and drops is totally within my current budget! Also, I second the idea to knit until Christmas and then add to the length after. You might be able to find a silk/satin underslip that will help too!
I couldn’t help myself 😂 thank you!! I highly recommend Korshavn! There is a whole series of a vest and pullover too! Such a fun stitch pattern and even more so in the round!
I have a beanie I’m knitting for my daughter’s boyfriend and it is just black stockinette. Seems quick enough but I guess since it is black and plain, I’m just NOT excited about knitting it. I set a goal of knitting an inch a day and that has totally made this boring project way more manageable. 😊
First of all, love your podcasts! Your thoughts on the Drops brushed alpaca vs. mohair are so interesting to me, because for me personally it's the exact opposite way 😄 i've found that the mohair is too bald of a string for me lol, but i generally prefer my knit pieces to be super dense. And if i pay all that money to be holding a mohair-ish yarn with my main yarn, then it better be as hairy as possible haha. Also love how your Thanksgiving vest is turning out, can't wait to see the finished piece!
Soo interesting!!!! I have to compare my brushed alpaca to the grey ones that I have, because it really does seem like it might be something that happened in the dying process for the red! I am actually shocked as just how hairy my vest is! But I also don’t have anything to compare it to just yet. Thank you 💛💛
wowwowow 😁 Don´t underestimete the frills! It is a lot of knitting. And you have to do it 4 times, right? Beautiful colour your Valentine´s day dress!🤭
Your Thanksgiving vest is looking gorgeous! And I love your brushed alpaca graphic popping up so often! A red dress for Christmas sounds Heavenly! ❤ I’m currently hopping between adding squares to the Nature’s Walk blanket I’m making and a burgundy crochet sweater that I hope to be able to wear to work and/or Thanksgiving this week. 🤞🏻
Thank you!!!! I am loving it! The little brushed alpaca just cracked me up 😂 ahhh I love a burgundy! It’ll be perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas whenever it gets done!!!
This morning, when I saw your video was up, I thought, “Is today really Saturday?” Yes, yes, it is. Your vest looks fantastic! I wasn’t sure about the colors, but they look so good 😊! Be kind to yourself and get done what you can. No one will know it’s not finished but you (and if they do know, oh well, it will be a good story). May I ask if you like your Knit Picks needles? I’m looking to get a pair of forever knitting needles set for Christmas 🎄 and don’t know which ones to get. I know I want wood because my stickers keep falling off the 4mm ChiaoGoo pair and almost made me quit the Beginning Jacket I’m working on. Your channel is a joy and I love the brushed alpaca illustration. (don't tell anyone but I thought the same thing when I got all the alpaca wool for the jackets. )I hope it looks amazing in the end. Happy knitting! 💚🧶💚
Time is seriously flying! I could not believe the weekend had already started myself! Thank you 💛 I’m giving myself grace to get it as done as I want it to be! While I have enjoyed my knit picks needles for nearly a year now, I am planning to get new ones for Christmas! I have found that the wooden needles are not for me, and I think it’s mostly because I tend to be a pretty aggressive knitter 😅 I grind my needles together a little bit too much when I insert for a stitch and it has left my wooden needles a bit rough. If you are a fan of wooden needles and are less hard-wearing on them, I would recommend! However, I am switching to metal needles and will be getting the Knitter’s Pride Nova Platina set. I have tried the chiaogoos and the addi turbos, but found the nova platinas to be the most comfortable for me. I hope that helps!
@@akaNoraKnits Oh my goodness, this was so helpful of you. Thank you so very much. I’m so glad you’re being kind to yourself with the vest, which is seriously beautiful. My crochet needles are wood, and I adore them. So, hopefully, wooden knitting needles will be a great fit. 😘 Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🦃 and happy knitting 💚🧶💚 You’re so right; time is really flying
Tonya at Nerdy Knitting here on TH-cam has a couple of really useful videos on her channel about editing sweater patterns to make them fit larger bodies and larger busts. I love how the thanksgiving vest is coming along. The color looks so nice.

Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🦃 and happy knitting 💚🧶💚 You’re so right; time is really flying
I love your videos and cant wait for when I see you have uploaded! I was wondering do you make the cute illustrations yourself? 🥰
Thank you so much 🥰 I use a crafty little combo of ProCreate, AI, Canva and Premiere Pro for all my illustrations 💛
Did you create the brushed alpaca cartoon?! Adorbs.
Yes isn’t she a cutie?! It brought me so much joy!
Tonya at Nerdy Knitting here on TH-cam has a couple of really useful videos on her channel about editing sweater patterns to make them fit larger bodies and larger busts. I love how the thanksgiving vest is coming along. The color looks so nice.
So good to know! Thank you!!!! I really am so pleased with it!
Why don’t you want to be “a person who constantly modify patterns?” No need for that limitation! 🎉
I know- you’re so right! Hopefully my doing it will encourage someone else to take the risk too! Thanks for being here 💛
