  • In today's video, I show you how to answer tell me about yourself. I explain why it's asked, why it's important and I give you a tell me about yourself sample answer. The tell me about yourself interview question is one of the most common interview questions asked and because it's typically asked so early in the interview process, it makes up a huge portion of the impression you make in an interview.
    Additionally, in this video, we talk about the mistakes people make while answering this interview question so that you can avoid making this mistake and you can absolutely crush this interview question.

    Hi Ben! Awesome videos! I subscribed today! This video is so important. I think about how I've silently coached myself to answer this question and - I feel like I know the basics... show how your background shines, briefly describe your major accomplishments at your current/last position and let the answer direct you into why you're a good fit for this new position. But when it comes to formulating my own answer (especially about "what I do now") I get so lost! My issue is - my job is different EVERY day. Everything I've done is using skills that needed to be self-taught on the job and can be too complex to explain or too specialized to be a relevant topic of discussion. I also on many days consider myself somewhat of a master troubleshooter but also a generalist where I will know how to do anything/everything at my company but I plan not to be the expert and rather shape my experts under me. This is so hard to explain and somehow does not come off so great in an interview, especially when my next job I'm interviewing for is NOT a COO job or Director of Ops job. So I end up losing myself in the question and I don't seem to articulate the value I think I can bring to a new company when I try to explain "what I do now." Hopefully, you have some advice for us who have a very difficult time explaining what we do!

    Another very good video. The only part I disagree with somewhat is to not weave in just a little bit of personal stuff into the answer. It shouldn't be more than a short sentence or two, but something that alludes to the breadth of you and your passions can't hurt you in this process and, if done well, can really make you come across as a real human being and not just a professionally polished shell. Example: "my passion for product management even shows up in my spare time, where I'm a bit of a synth nerd. I don't just play them, I like to analyze their UX to decipher the priorities and processes of their product team." I just made that up but just as a way to discretely let them know that you're also a musician in your spare time. If you're lucky, someone will react very positively to that and share that they also have that interest, and that increases your odds of standing out considerably. Worst case they will just see it as yet another sign of your passion for product management (in this case).

    Ben, you probably have a video for the question, "What is your greatest career accomplishment," by the interviewer. I'm not sure which video to post this question on, but it's an "ace card" that a few of us men have: Eagle Scout. Of course, that's not a CAREER accomplishment, but goodness, it CAN make a difference. In Seattle, lifeguarding for the City of Seattle pools, paid NICELY. We got paid $13 an hour PLUS a 5% premium (in lieu of benefits) back in 1996, and since most lifeguards were young, we didn't care about benefits. Anyway, Eric got hired on (and got a lot of hours), and our manager said that him being an Eagle Scout played a huge role in him being hired. How, if at all, can "being an Eagle Scout" be incorporated into an interview? I don't know if telling them about myself is THE place to do it?

    The reason why this question is asked is to see if you are a good fit for the position, bringing your CV to life so they have a better understanding about you. Keep it short and simple and also ask at the end if they want to know something specific, that´s also a good way to engage with them.

    Ben, should I even mention this, or hope my interviewer asks me, towards the end: During the pandemic, my resume added something for "Other Activities." Basically, my late Dad was part of a band through church, when he was in high school. Some of his closest friends were in that band. In 2020, some of the still living members decided to write a book about the band. They invited me to a zoom, to talk about my Dad. Well, soon, I was added to their book committee as a "younger member." I think this could be a very nice thing that could be a "difference maker" in getting a job, especially as I apply for an INTERNAL promotion. How would you recommend I go about this?

    • @BenTalksTalent
      @BenTalksTalent  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a good question. That’s a pretty specific story and can be hard to weave into an interview seamlessly. I wouldn’t force it. But if they ask about some non work related you are proud of, that would be a perfect time.

    • @unappealingundesirable2826
      @unappealingundesirable2826 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BenTalksTalent Thank you, Ben! I agree, I shouldn't force it. But, since this is an internal promotion attempt, and the interview will be a little more casual, I can just hope they'll ask me about it, and I should be prepared to talk about it a little, but not overdo it, either. I just think that it could "make me look a little more well-rounded, dedicated, and interesting."
