When I was about 10yo, I wrote a fanfic of the Mario universe. It was largely unchanged from canon, but I considerably changed the tone by adding realistic psychology to the events of the world. People fearing death, a deeper look into the war and what exactly Bowser wants Peach for, etc. I found the story about a decade ago as a young adult and could not believe how dark and, honestly, quite realistic and deep the story was for something written as fanfic of a children's game when I was a child. The Mario universe really is a much darker place than the upbeat music gives credit. No wonder Mario never speaks.
