    Are you using this light? If so, chime in on whether yours generates lots of noise or not.

      Some noise but I really can't say its that loud, I mean my desktop makes more noise than the unit lol. To me, it's a very acceptable noise level which you can further edit in audacity if needed.

    I just ordered this light. Any reason you chose this softbox over a deep parabolic? I have a small space to work with but I hear the deep parabolic do a nicer job with the lighting of the face.

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know much about modifiers. I see looks online I like, then try to figure out how to recreate them. I liked the look of a video shot with these softboxes, so I added a couple to my setup.

    Very informative. I'm looking at this light for a main key light, vs a Aputure 120D. I'll get the 120D at some point, but this could be a good alternative for now, though many just use this light. Thanks for the video!

    I compared this light side by side with the Falconeyes RX18-T as well as a cheap Bonlux 40w LED in a softbox. The Godox gave the most accurate skintones, so I'm assuming it has the highest CRI of the 3. The fan does kick on right away, but as long as you're running a lav for audio, I think you're good to go. Overall the minor fan noise was something I could deal with, and you can actually modify it with a silent fan...TH-cam it. Also, even though the light and remote don't exactly sync, I find myself only using the remote so it's not a big deal. Works great for me!

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here about controlling the light only with the remote. It's interesting that some get almost no fan noise from these while others have issues.

    Great behind the scenes video and review! Juat a question, the back panel that comes of on that octabox - what is the purpose of that? Why would it be off or on?

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I believe removing the back panel gives you access to an easier place/way to hold the softbox when you need to connect it to a mount. The inside of the panel is reflective, so it directs light to the front of the softbox.

    • @danielvilliers612
      @danielvilliers612 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yep exactly, a bit frustrating to see all that and not the end result at all. I came here to see what result you can expect from such a light with double diffusion etc.. the final image and what ISO etc would have told us a bit the power etc to expect. Imagine if you are shooting at 10 000 iso, the 10% power would mean zero.

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Howdy, I do appreciate you taking the time to make this video. I have watched a bunch of videos about this unit, and no one seems to give any useful info on the output of light... strangely most people did what you did and pointed it into the lens and turned the power up and down. I was hoping someone would provide real world exposure numbers, and especially in a Softbox about the size you are using. What is your exposure at 100% with the bank. I’m hoping to get something like f8, 1/60 at 100 ISO - about 3-4 feet light to subject. What are you getting?

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are absolutely right. My test was not very useful with the angle I had the light. I did shoot from another camera/angle but I believe I had that cam set for auto-ISO, so that wasn't very useful either.

      Thanks for the comment but that was not the case with me (or many others who have posted about it online). Even when "locking" the attachment in place it would come loose without the release lever being pressed. It's likely an issue with my softbox attachment and not the actual light though.

    I recently purchased and experienced the same issue with the Bowens mount. I however believe the design flaw is with the sl60 not the softbox. After attaching softbox I had difficulty removing. It rotated 360 degrees inside the housing. I'm using the Flashpoint Glow softbox.

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This may be true too. My experience is that other attachments with Bowens mounts fit the SL60 fine. I suppose there may be issues with both the softbox and the light.

    I just got a Godox AD-S60S soft box and not sure how to use it. When do you use the inner diffusion discs, vs the honeycomb, vs the outer diffuser, or combinations of those 2 or 3? - Also, what's the point of the zip on the side? - is that to adjust the inner diffusion? why would you need to do that?

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The zip likely is for what you described but I'm not sure. The grid is used to control the direction of your light. If you want the light focused on your subject, use the grid. Of you want the light to wash over a wider area, then remove the grid. The inner diffuser panel is optional and can be used to soften your light more in the case the large diffuser doesn't make the light as soft as you would like. Good luck with your new soft box and thanks for watching!

    What stands would you recommend for this light. Something with a boom arm for top down lighting.

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're wanting something mobile that you can use on a floor mount, I would go with C-stands if they are within budget. Otherwise, a stable tripod stand would work too, but you might want to weigh them down for more stability/security. I mounted mine on wall mounts in my studio. The wall mounts I use can extend and swivel. They come in sizes between 4 feet and about 7 feet. Let me know if you need help locating anything I mentioned.

    Hey man I have this light and I'm finding with a parabolic 37 inch softbox, double diffuse and grid the light isn't bright enough to not go down to iso 500-800. What's your experience of it

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're meaning even at 100%? And how far is the light from your subject? I'm able to run mine at around 30% with both diffusers and the grid and the light is still bright enough at 3 feet from the subject with my cam at 400 ISO at f/2.8. That gets me underexposed by 1 stop even when the scene is almost completely black.

    hello, moni! great video!
    what ISO in 80d you used with the sl60?

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I almost never shoot at higher than ISO 400 with the 80D (as I sometimes notice noise in the shadows at ISO 800 and higher, depending on the lens), and I typically keep a single SL60W at 10%. I also shoot with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 either wide open or as high as f/2.8 for slightly more depth of field. Of course, depending on the look I want and on how large the area is I need to illuminate, I may increase the brightness of the SL60W.

      I didn't say I don't shoot at 100. I said I almost never shoot at higher than 400, just so you know my upper limit (even with the SL60W at a low setting, or when using different lighting). I do also shoot at lower ISO when the shot conditions only require that.

    Hi Moni! I feel really stupid asking this question. I'm just getting into video production and this is the light I bought. When I put the light onto the light stand it seems really loose even though I've clamped it down and tightened the screws and what not. Am I supposed to take off that little black covering on the light stand? I noticed it screws off. • @MoniJohnson

      The 60 will likely be powerful enough for most indoor applications if the space is not too large. Considering you haven't made the purchase yet though, if you can get the more powerful light at a decent price you might want to go that route for better "future proofing".

      If your soft box is a Bowen-style mount I had the same issue. I had assumed the soft box was the issue, but another subscriber mentioned the "teeth" on the light were the problem. I was able to modify my soft box to make everything align correctly. You can do the same for just a few dollars and perhaps an hour of effort, but the mod will render your soft box useless with any other light. You can see what I did here:

You might even need something more like the sl 200 if you’re trying to achieve that. But if you’re just trying to get a beam with some haze, the sl60 with a fresnel should give you something anyway.

    • @rokpodlogar6062
      @rokpodlogar6062 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      5600K +-300K means the light produced is expected to be within that range, depending on the power output (actual color temperature varies with different power outputs from 10-100%). The SL60W comes in two variations, the W(white) and Y(yellow). The remote seems to be standardized for more than these two products, which makes sense.

    How does an LED panel compare for a simple, minimalistic setup?

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you keep it super simple (only an LED panel) you may not be able to get the same look, mainly because the lighting might be too harsh. But with diffusion and possibly a grid you can achieve a similar look. Using a panel would take up less space though. I use two small LED panels in my studio. One is used without a diffuser to add light to a small area in my background. The other is diffused and used to add light to my desk (for my overhead shot). Does this answer your question?

      The SB-UE 120cm seems like a good option. That's actually larger than the one I use.

    Also, I would have sent those banks right back, that speed ring is not acceptable. I use chimera mostly or photo flex to save a little cash. Godox has a rep for being great bang for the buck, but I’d look into better banks and a separate “real” Balcar S speedring. Photo flex is also a good source for those.

    Tell me something bro the godox 60w is only 5600k

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct. The SL60W is a single color temp (5600), though the controller/light has temp adjustment on it.

    About this light and its noise, It really depends of what type or work you want to do in my opinion, I sent it back because of the noise. I did test recording and if you record an actor even at 10 feet, you can hear it (with you ears or mic). Should be less annoying with a Lav mic though. If you record music video clip, go ahead, no problem. Recording an interview? really risky.
    Only my opinion.

    Well explained product review but your focus is off nearly the whole time. Not just in the beginning. Besides that you got a nice set up

    • @MoniJohnson
      @MoniJohnson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the heads up. My vision is so poor that bad focus happens way more often that I would like. Without focus peaking/assist I can't tell the difference.

      For me (opinion), there is a huge difference between the max and minimum intensities. You cannot see that in the video though. Also, remember the light is passing through TWO diffusers in this video.
