    Yup. That "out-of-sync-remote" thing is one of the things most users don't like about the SL-60W. However, it hasn't been a big deal to me and the light is a steal of a deal otherwise. Keep in mind the 120D may also generate similar noise levels once it reaches a certain temperature.

    There are many portable Lithium batteries with AC outlets to easily power the Godox SL-60W. There is ZERO need to buy the battery version of the Godox.

    • @jeetinj
      @jeetinj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      can you recommend one brand portable Lithium batteries with AC outlet

    • @romari2706
      @romari2706 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      There are a lot of Lithium Batteries with AC Outlets these days which can power Laptops and LCD Screens, which can be used to also power LED continuous lights. Some include:
      For professional photographers, I recommend the Vagabond Mini™ Lithium which can power up to 3200ws Flash Heads, has 2 AC outlets, and has 130Wh of power. It costs $240 at paulbuff.com. As a pro-outlet, their product can take the beating and keep on working that professionals want.
      If you travel, to be on the safe side, you need to limit the Lithium Battery power to 100Wh (about 27,000 mAh) or you may not be allowed on the airline. The upper limit depends on the airline - some allow much larger batteries. Also a squarish battery would look suspicious to the same should be a flat rectangle.
      Lifepowr A2 L Power Pack 27,000mAh (100Wh) battery for $190 at BHPhotovideo.com is a great battery for travel. It has a silver-metallic case so it doesn't look like a regular battery. It has a 100 W AC outlet.
      Mophie 22,000 mAh Powerstation for $200 at BHPhotovideo.com also is great for travel. It has not only an AC outlet byt a USBType C and USB Type A output.
      RAVPower 27,000 mAh with an 85-100W AC Outlet for only $130 at Amazon.com is a great buy. It has a fan, however, which is a concern when doing video work.
      The FlePow 20000 mAh with 100W max AC Outlet and 2 USB ports is nice and small for travel. It is so cheap at $80 at Amazon.com. It does have a fan however which will trigger when the battery reaches 47 degrees Celsius. The fan which is a concern when doing video work.

    There are some nice alternatives from Godox for a pretty low price. There is also a 150 Watts version as well as the ones with battery (60W and 150W). All of them are way, way, way less expensive than the 120D. There is no need for a tungsten light because you always can use gels. I have no idea how this all works out on real pro sets but I´m sure for any TH-camr and even for "simpler" pro productions the Godox will do a great job. I heard a lot of people complaining about the fan noise of the Godox. I use it for my TH-cam stuff and never had an issue with the fan at all. I use a shotgun mic right over my head and the Godox stands approx 1,5 meters away from me.

    • @WhatAboutTom
      @WhatAboutTom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the fan noise really isn't an issue at all lol. And yes, for TH-cam and low budget shoots, this light is going to be fine.

    Holy shit - this is HUGE as someone who really wants more c120d lights but can't justify the cost of more. The fan noise concerns me, but overall this looks like what I want, signed up for stock alerts for it.
    I found it a tad weird that you compared color cast when white balanced for only one of the lights when they're two totally different color temps (5600k vs 6000k on the c120d). But overall really great and thorough review!

    • @WhatAboutTom
      @WhatAboutTom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! And well, we wouldnt notice a color cast if I white balanced for both of them, right? That would remove the color cast. It has to be white balanced for only one of the lights so we can see the difference between the two, otherwise the camera will correct for any color inaccuracies. But yes, you're right. They are different color temps, that's why the Godox looked a bit warmer on my face in the comparison. Glad you found it useful though!

      @WhatAboutTom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you know a better way of testing that? Please let me know! I would love to know if there's a better, more accurate way, considering a lot of people might buy this light based off of this video and I don't wanna mislead them lol

    Brilliant thanks for this Tom. I looked at the 120d and my heart sank when i saw the price. Then I found this, THANK YOU.
    [Background; if interested] I recently returned to the UK while travelling in the US shooting a documentary and portable lighting has always been a challenge for me. (Sometimes I'm not able to source a rental outlet near the location we're shooting in due to the remote nature of some of the shoots.) So I've tried LED panels in the past to give me at least some sort of lift for interviews and I've made them work at the time but just decided there to stop struggling and look at something with a little more 'oomph'. Weird how they are 'either-or' battery or mains not both. Wonder if they'll change that in the future.

  • @vividcolourfilms1276
    @vividcolourfilms1276 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmmm, I think the difference in the test between the SL-60w and the 120d was very obvious. The 120d Picture was sharper and the colours looked true on the skin tones. Also the skin tones in the SL-60W looked washed out unless the camera settings where different 120d gave better results. Regarding the mount, you should always counter balance your light when adding a dome or front heavy attachment, this will give you smoother control of the light angle while relieving the stress on the mount.

    I'm really impressed with this light's output but based on the look alone, I don't know if I'm 100% sold on the yoke on this thing. I love a good lever, but I feel like that thing's gonna snap after a year of regular professional use on location. Of course, if I can't make a ~$140 investment pay for itself in a year, I'm not doing my job. Definitely worth looking into.

      @@WhatAboutTom Not quite correct, a lot of prices is considered behind how reliable and consistent they are, there are very few issues with the 120 on professional sets, and that's what they are intended for, professional use, which warrants professional costs, now I love the godox but there is serious flicker issues at slow motion settings when its not fully powered on, so I dont think its ludicrous to have lights priced higher for consistent and high quality performance... I do think that there is a requirement for cheaper budget lights for those who arent doing professional work but it will have the draw back of non professional results.

    I got a SL-60W and it is a nice light for the price ! I like the remote FORCING % level to the light, this allow from the remote to know the light current output instead of having someone go look at the light to tell how it is. So if you control 3 light, you know they all will be at the same power. Each light come with a remote, so if you want different level on different light, you just have 1 remote per channel. On the aputure, you change level and you just don't know how are the light... And if you use it with 2 light at different level and you hit one of them at 100% and continue increasing the other, then when you lower it they are not balanced anymore and would require to adjust manually. I found the lever attachment on the SL-60W to be flimzy and I'm a bit scared to forcefully secure it with heavy soft box. They do not set the remote to 5600k when shipping which cause a lot of people issues in getting the light below 20% (it easy to change, but lot of people don't know how). There is softbox that just wont fit on my aputure 120d mkII (or 300d), the speedring doesn't fit, but all the speedring I have did fit on the SL-60W. Mine came with a power cable from the wrong country, but they sent me a replacement quickly. I just wish it was a more flexible power cable, but it was pretty long which is nice. I would suggest this light for anything starting doing video ! It really just missing a good case for it (which I would much rather have a case that fit 3 right away). I REALLY wish Godox made good low cost clone of the Aputure Mini20d !!!

    @4:49 , its very clear that 120d is better. Sharpness and color details is clearly noticeable. But for the price, Godox is good. You get what you pay for.
    My two cents,
    I do not own any of the light, but i am after quality of video production when i into decision making process. 2nd light, Yes it makes sense to save money but definitely not for primary light.
    Thank you for the info, to re-collect my thought in decision making. Kudos

      @adamrabalais 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sharpness on the left has nothing to do with the light. He's standing closer to the camera so he's slightly out of focus.

    I have two of these lights. They are great. The only issue I can see, is you will get flicker in shooting very, very high speed, for slowmo.
    It does use PCM to control brightness, so has a flicker, but, you will not notice it in in some slowmo speeds, and not at all at 24 - 30 frames, or even slightly higher. At really fast shutter, it is noticeable.
    Still, this is a fantastic light for the price.

    • @WhatAboutTom
      @WhatAboutTom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is that factual? Because I don't believe it uses PCM. My unit doesn't flicker at all, no matter what shutter speed/frame rate. It seems unconventional to make some units with PCM and some without. I highly doubt they'd do that.

    Hey Tom, I know this is very nitpicky, but I can totally tell the difference between the 120D, and this Godox light. You have to pixel peep, but the skin tones and the highlight roll-off are just a bit off between the two. The 120D definitely edges out there. For a 150 dollar light though it's not terrible.

    • @WhatAboutTom
      @WhatAboutTom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. The 60W has a bit more of a warm tone in the skintones, and has a tiny bit of a green tint. Highlight rolloff doesn't have anything to do with the light, it's how the camera captures the light. I might've used slightly different settings when shooting the footage between the two. When I said, "you probably can't tell the difference" I was speaking to the general audience. Most people won't really be able to tell the difference, and it definitely doesn't look like most cheap lights usually do.

    I bought the Godox SLB60W and I'm in love with it. I do photography and bought this for low light /night photography. At full power, the battery is rated for an hour of operation. Here's a shot I did on the Venice Beach boardwalk just after the sun went down. The light was at around 20% I think. Shot with a Sony a6000, Sigma 18-35mm @ 1/320, f/2.2, ISO 1250.
