  • The Godox SL-60w is my favorite budget friendly studio light, but the fan noise was a little too much for me to be comfortable using it all the time or leaving it plugged in all the time, so I went ahead and figured out how to replace the fan with a whisper quiet one. You can do it too. If you have issues, leave comments, I'll answer as best I can.

      @@JasonParkerMagic The design of the light hasn't changed, so I doubt there's anything you can look out for. This video was made a year and a half ago and it's a popular light, so I would guess most of the lights on the market would be the 'new' version. Easiest way would be to buy one and try it out. Return it if you don't like it.

    Thanks this worked great for me. After watching your video I was able to skip a bunch of steps like removing the base. I used the included fan extension cable and the end of the existing fan to make a Godox fan cable to standard Female 3-pin fan connection adapter. This way the wires wont pull out and I could swap the fan easily in the future. You should have all of these parts on your bench, you could also do the same and pop it in place.

    Might have been good to do some temperature readings before and after to address any cooling inconsistencies that may or may not arise.

    • @HonestReviewsChannel
      @HonestReviewsChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      With the original fan I was getting 49 degrees celsius (with a softbox on). With the fan mod I'm now at 69 degrees celsius. I'm not sure what the operating temperature range of the light is. It's quiet of course, but now I wonder if it's going to overheat.

    • @SanczykLucas
      @SanczykLucas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HonestReviewsChannel I can tell you that the light turn off automatically when it overheats. I think the limit is around 80ºC. Mine came with the cooler not working, so I can barely use it past 80% power for more than 10 minutes or else it shutdown itself.

    • @dudepersonvids
      @dudepersonvids 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have mine set to farenheit (because, you know, America temperature), but I did notice an increase in temperature after the mod. At 100% brightness I think it ran around 98-110 F (36-43 C) with the stock fan. After about 15 minutes running at 100%, it got up to 120 F (49 C) degrees with the Noctua fan installed. It's a little concerning... But dropping brightness to 60% dropped the temperature by a few degrees, instantly. Safe operating temperature according to Godox is 158 F or 70 C.

  • @RobertShaverOfAustin
    @RobertShaverOfAustin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One of the reasons it is quieter could be because the replacement fan is moving less air and/or moving it at a slower speed. The noise is caused by air turbulence from both the fan blades and by the air passing over the heat sync. Since not real temperature testing of the cooling was conducted before and after the replacement, we don't really know if the this change will impact the life of the instrument. Another factor is the impact of bypassing of that circuit board. I wonder what it's purpose was? Because this is a less expensive instrument, I can't imagine the manufacturer added it without good reason. But life is full of unknown factors.

    This fan swap does not work with the SL-150W and probably won't work for the SL-100W either. The 60,100,150 all use the same fan Model: PD922512MB-03. The Noctua doesnt put out enough air to cool the 150W. The Noctua does 20.5 CFM at 1400 RPM about 10 dB. The stock Godox fan does 48.29 CFM at 2700 RPM around 33dB. You can only run the 150W at about 65-70% which stabilizes at 68C. The light cuts off as it has overheat protection at above 69C. I've checked New Egg / PC part Picker there is no fan that puts out close to 50CFM below 33dB. So atleast for the 150W the stock fan is the best choice I've found. Audibly its actually not that bad and it can be placed further away from your subject because of the power output.

I did'nt have to bypass, mine works also when connected to the original port, without any issues. The only thing that I got is a flickering battery symbol at the display, but maybe you got the same. I think this is because this fan uses much less current. Don't know if this makes problems in the future or not.

    Temperature differences would have been interesting. The Noctua likely runs at lower RPM and thus might negatively impact cooling, though at the same time, Noctua`s might be more airflow optimized and thus increase cooling or keep it even. Also great Video, really helpful, looks like an easy enough mod for someone like me with a background in PC-modding.

    @weightlessfilms5651 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Update: Successfully installed the Noctua fan. I fortunately did not have that same flickering issue, so I didn't have to do the extra bypass step. I did have to saw off the four corners of the fan in order to get the screws in. One mistake I made was not labeling where each set of screws went. I was sure to keep them all separated, but when I put it back together I mixed up some of them. That resulted in (most likely) stripping. My Bowens mount is also slightly looser, but NBD. Pro Tip: Be sure to clean off the LED chip after this. If you're like me, you had the light on the work bench and tons of crap ended up on it. When I smelt burning, I thought I may have screwed up the janky adapting of wires. Luckily, it was just the dust burning off. This mod is definitely worth doing to avoid that annoying fan noise in your audio. Considering the Aputure fans are louder than this upgrade, I can't imagine why someone would shell out so much more for a 120. To be clear, this new fan isn't silent, but it's much quieter, and if you're using a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG 3, and pointing it away from the light a couple yards away, you're in the clear. Cheers!

Instead of re-routing my fan to another input I use the same one as the factory fan (no other option). I think with this different PCB there is something causing the fan not to run at its max speed. When I set it to 100% It will reach the the 72 degree limit and shut off! Too bad, maybe there is a work around but that is beyond me haha. I developed two interfaces one with the ultra-quiet noise that runs fan at 1,100 RPM and the second straight one at 1,400 RPM. I prefer the later one at 1,400 but after this switch the light temperate there used to be around 45~47 C is now at 58C (30 min). Can you share what temperatures are you getting at 100% power?

    • @michaellim4165

      Godox updated their boards now. So you won't be able to mod it the way this video shows it now.

    • @frostymmb
      @frostymmb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The updated board with 4 pin connectors would need the Noctua NF-A8 PWM fan, which has black-yellow-green-blue wires and connectors. Cut wires from original fan, leaving the original connector on the other end. Strip wires, tin each with solder so they are stiff, then insert into the Noctua 4-pin female connector, making sure they are tightly held. Then heatshrink over the connector and wires to secure the connection.

  • @emisimk
    @emisimk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Saw one video where this mod added flickering at 10%.
    Do you have same issue?

  • @HonestReviewsChannel
    @HonestReviewsChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just modded my SL-60w. I'm using the Arctic F8 Silent fan. Before the mod I was getting a steady temperature of 49 degrees celsius with a softbox on (23 degrees ambient temperature). With the fan modded it's up to 69 degrees celsius with the softbox on. It hasn't overheated yet, and I've had it on for about an hour. Seems like the temperature is stabilizing around 70 degrees.
    I'm not really sure it's worth it to do the fan mod. Sure it's quiet, but can I count on this for serious work now? Even if it doesn't overheat I'm guessing running it 20 degrees hotter is going to reduce the lifespan of this.
    Finally, the noise from the original fan was audible to me, but in my testing with a shotgun mic about a meter away (recording audio from me, not pointed at the fan), the fan noise was not an issue (it just bothered me). Test for yourself before bothering to mod this light - you might find you really don't need to. On the other hand this light is so cheap I guess I could just buy a backup and keep it unmodded.

    • @HonestReviewsChannel
      @HonestReviewsChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just looked it up and the operating temperature range for this light is -10 to +50 degrees celsius. With a "Safe temperature" up to 70 degrees. It doesn't seem to make sense to use the Noctua ULN (or Arctic F8), as they don't cool the light enough. www.godox.com/EN/InstructionManual/Godox_SL60_20160303.pdf
      I know people are using the NF-A8 which seems like the best solution - albeit not the most silent. I may try that fan, or just switch back to the original.

    @blackmonstreetusa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ 7:47 ...hey Tommy thanks for the fan test...wow...this is great news, is it still working 3 months later?
    I'm asking because, it's evident the light is extremely quiet...scary quiet in fact. I know you said you could feel air movement from the front of the light...was it cool, warm or hot air? and at frame 7:47 I'm Looking at the temperature gauge...(are my eyes deceiving me? I see it's at 100% brightness, but isn't the bottom number the temperature read out?) you just turned the light on and in a few minutes it's at 87F...really?
    If that is the temperature (I'm not sure, I hadn't got my SL-60W yet) then I think somethings extremely wrong and since the warranty will be voided once we alter our light...if it burns up (or burns down) the place...we may be rethinking this hacking idea...just saying :) But thanks for the upload, if your light is still functioning months later I'm willing to give it a try...very informative and great idea! Keep 'em coming

    • @TommyCallaway
      @TommyCallaway  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The temperature is fine. It's been plugged in and used for months since this video. There is a bit of a QA issue with these lights though, some of them have flicker at high frame rates, and some of them don't. Mine does - but it's still usable for regular videos, just not high framerate / slowmo stuff like I do for some of my B roll. I have an updated video about it on my channel.
