Thank you for watching our Toyota Highlander fender replacement video. Toyota really went above and beyond when assembling this fender. It has a lot of bolts and in some places, is hard to reach. Worry not, we are here to help you and show you how to get this fender off. Toyota did try and make this a bit more difficult compared to how easy the rest of their cars are to work on. Let's get right into it!
    TOOLS NEEDED:
You will need a flat-head screwdriver or panel clip removal tool for the plastic push-pins and clips. You will need a 10mm wrench or socket wrench with an extension.
    PROCESS:
We like to start on the bottom of the part and work our way up. So, we started on the fender liner near the door. We started by removing the push-pins and clips to remove the fender molding or flares. There is a plastic clip on the very bottom that you need to remove. We did leave it hanging off the bumper but you are more than welcome to fully remove it. We then moved on to remove the rest of the clips and bolts holding the fender liner in place. There are a couple of nasty clips that need to be removed but you can also cut them to save time. They should be around a few dollars from Toyota. We removed ours with a flat-head screwdriver but it took some time. We then moved to the nose of the fender to remove the bolts located there. You do have to take off the bumper bracket or retainer. That is not standard practice for most vehicles but Toyota made it this way. There are 2 10mm bolts underneath the bracket. We made the lateral move and removed the 2 bolts located near the door. The top bolts are near the side view mirror and are pretty easy to see. The hidden bolt is on the inside of the fender behind the fender liner. Now you can move to the top of the fender bolts. These are pretty easy to see and are self-explanatory. There will always be 1-2 bolts near the windshield cowl. You can pop the covers off with your hand easily enough. Once you remove the last of the bolts, you can now remove the fender. The installation process should be easy-peasy. Just work your way in reverse and make sure you don't have any extra bolts or clips left. If you do, you're one hell of a mechanic. Just kidding, but 1-2 won't hurt but be sure to put everything back!

How do you remove the rocker panel on the bottom of the rear door? I need to remove it to re-paint it. Road debris damaged. Same vehicle.

Hi Ross and great question. The rocker panel will usually have plastic push-pins/clips along the bottom or tabs that just need to pulled out gently. There will most like be bolts by the wheels. They are normally behind the fender liner or behind plastic cover. You might have to disconnect the bottom portion of the fender. Once the ends are out, you should be able to pull it off. Cheers!
