Something you miss is pre 1971 Horsepower is different to post 1972 horsepower - the SAE changed how BHP was measured from gross to net with accesories, resulting in huge decreases
Would love to see a video about the German power wars of the 80's into the early 2000's, when cars like the Merc 2.8 Evo 2 started a trend that culminated in Audi putting the twin turbo V10 from an R8 into an estate car (station wagon as you guys say in the US). You barely see them any more, but as a teenager I dreamed of owning one of those or a C63. Incredible sounds
To put that 2,200hp engine at the end into better context, I worked on a very big tow boat, it had two 4,500 HP diesels. So that car alone has a quarter of the power needed to push over 40 loaded barges down the mississippi river. Each barge being 200ft long by 35ft wide, that's over a quarter mile of steal out in front of you. And that car makes 1 full 1/4 of the HP needed to do something like that. Insane.
You do have to account the fact that Horsepower is a product of speed AND torque. Even though it has 1/4 of the HP, it has much, much less torque as the engine is faster and the car is geared for speed, not torque
@@DuxAT that's why at the end I made a point to say HP. The engines on the river were TQ monsters I'm sure, but nobody knows how much they put out because they only go off HP numbers for some reason. I always hated how I could never get an answer on the TQ figures for those engines. lol, I used to bug the fuck out of every engineer that came aboard trying to figure it out.

Ive actually ridden in a early 427 vette, owner was rich af gave no fs drove like it too, told me after a fresh rebuild it was dynoed at 550 not sure if that’s wheel or crank, but the car was a monster and only had lap belts so
Whats crazy is they were getting 10-15mpg out of those 540 horsepower engines. Mercedes benz years later in the 90s was getting that gas mileage out of a 390 horsepower V12, and you had to pay over $200k (so over 400k in modern dollars) for an AMG version 7.2 liters just to get 500-550hp
The SSC Tuatara shouldn’t have been included on this list. It isn’t a production car. There is no concrete spec for it. They turn up boost and modify it depending on what fuel is available. They are essentially modifying the car every time they test it. How many of those cars did they even produce? 1? 5? 10? That isn’t a production car at all. It is a kit car that they assemble for you and are trying to claim is a “production” car.
The 90's ZR1 Engine (I Think it was the LT5) was developed by Lotus and they gave it to GM with well over 500hp. But GM stated that it was too much power and had it decreased to 380hp.
The ending statement is spot on Nolan. Comparing what they are making now and using an ACTUAL horse to calculate is kinda silly. It DOES lose its meaning. Not many people can fathom a fathom! LOLS!!! Edit: I love and miss you Jimmy!!
The 429 was a 385 series engine. The 427 and 428 were FE engines. Yes, the term hemi stands for hemispherical but not for the top of the piston. Hemi in that instance is the combustion chamber.

Totally missed a very important one above all man. Koenigsegg One:1 engine made 1360hp and was as the name implies was revolutionary with the 1:1 PW ratio
Hey Nolan love the video. Jaguar xj220 was in the race for first to break 200mph against the ferrari f40. Love that car. They even put the same engine from that into a mg metro rally car 6r4. 3.5ltr v6 twin turbo over 500bhp. This engine was what put a stop in rallying to the big engines and high power limiting engines to 2 ltr turbos now :) love all u guys
you are all wrong here. the v6 started in the metro and was slow in rallying, group b ended because of 1.7 liter engines making 500+ hp, not the NA 3.0 v6 metro. The turbos and extra displacement came in the xj220
I think you guys need to do a follow up video at the Dyno, and show off what real American muscle cars actually made in power. I'd also love to see a couple modern cars like the legendary Porsche horse powers, which seem to be more than any other manufacturer. And a modern BMW, Vs an Audi and Mercedes.
Nolan is getting really fun to watch. Great production too. Donut has progressed really nicely

facts
Something you miss is pre 1971 Horsepower is different to post 1972 horsepower - the SAE changed how BHP was measured from gross to net with accesories, resulting in huge decreases
Yeah, muscle cars made 15 - 50% less power than claimed. Yet people like to say they actually made more than factory.
The "country of Europe" is possibly the most American thing ive ever heard
BRING BACK UP 2 SPEED PLEASE 🥺
4:38 "7 Liters for the Europeans out there (And Canada)"
95% of the world use metrical system, not just Europeans 🤣
Cool video Nolan
Yep i was about to comment that but you did it first lol...
Its actually less than that - its 1.5%. Only the US Liberia and Myanmar use the imperial system. (195 countries in the world divide by 3 x 100 = 1.53846154%)
here in the UK we used a mixture 🤣
I used to own some IH 345's and 392's (heavy duty truck packages). So reliable that at one time, there was a rumor that they were going to replace the NIST atomic clocks with them for internet time (ha ha!).I feel so left out here on those. So sad. Also, 70's era Toyota Land Cruisers are not present. The one I used to drive was used for field research in very challenging conditions. Best thing: 45 mph max speed down the highway. 45 mph up a telephone pole. Hard to beat.
Up to Speed on the German “Amphibicar” that’s banned in the United States yet we have a bunch here operating as amusement rides and showpieces! Forgotten piece of history
I would love to see a video of engines that can be done the most modification producing the most HP without blowing up.
Technically the 426 Hemi wins this by a huge margin, modern top fuel making something like 15,000 hp are all based off the 426.
@@againstalltyrants9001 Diesels take the trophy for most power on fuel you can buy at a regular gas station.
@@againstalltyrants9001 Top fuel engines are full custom at this point and have nothing to do with the Hemis of old. They also explode all the time and are rebuilt between every run, as they barely last 4 seconds at that power level.
Also, every modern engine now uses a hemispherical combustion chamber, so the name has lost its significance.

Don’t forget about the Funco Motorsports F9 engine. It’s a twin turbo V8 pushing 1750 hp!
Koenigsegg fans are Sad😢
yea 🥲
Haven't watched the video but looking at a few comments, it seems Koenigsegg and their V8 got ignored and there's perfect reasoning afaik! But it's ok and understandable, Koenigsegg is already doing a remarkable job!
The Grand Turismo movie you guys should do a “what is the differences” video !!! 😮😊
I'm a Mopar child, but a basic Hi-Po 289 or a Boss 302 will always have a place in my heart.
Up to speed is why I subscribed. I miss it. 😢
Same
😢
Nice video, but why not mention the Mercedes Benz 300sl from 1954 with it's 3 liter 6 zylinder that put out 215 HP and had a top speed of up to 260kmh (~160mph).
They *definitely* didn't make 200 1967 L88 Corvettes. They made like 5.
They did make a total of about 200 total L88 Corvettes over the years it was available though.
@@F9109-r1e ah, I thought they only made like 5. I didn't really think about that. The 1967 L88s were mostly if not all dedicated racecars and sometimes racecars are crashed and not rebuilt because when they are new people don't think they will be important in the future, especially back then.
Watching a new Donut video while wearing my new Donut shirt my wife got me for my birthday on my birthday. Doesn't get much better. Happy Birthday to me !
"Microwaves are barely a thing and you're telling me this car can do a burnout??" Best line I've heard years! Thanks Nolan, You the man!!
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Saleen S7....another 600+ hp beast from America...or 1,500 with the twin turbo
The Ford 427 SOHC made over 600 with dual quads....from the factory. With a single 4 barrel they made about 550
I have a model of the Ford 427 SOHC engine and the case it's in says it made 615 hp @ 7,000 rpm with a single four, 657 hp @ 7,500 rpm, with two fours. This was the most powerful factory engine of it's time, the main reason it was banned from NASCAR.
I came to say, 427GMs and Fords and 426s with minor mods you could get same day could be pushed into the 600-700 hp range lol
@@againstalltyrants9001 bit only the Cammer could rev past 7k all day
550 horsepower on a single carburetor? What was the compression ratio?
@joshjlmgproductions3313 there were 2 Compression ratios. 10.9:0 and 12:0
Would you guys consider doing a most tunable engine list? Obviously the k series, 2jz, and ls would be on the list but I'm curious if there are other underappreciated beasts that I've never heard of
Sounds like a great idea for a video. Would love to see this
BMW's N54
There is a lot of engines equal if not better than the 2J specifically in the I6 department.
They don't mention the VG and VR38, the B58 series or S58 series and Ford Barra are examples.
Such a good video. Nolan is the best speaker and the most interesting to listen to. Thanks for not putting James on this one where we’d roll our eyes for 20 minutes while he says “HrSpRs” and cringe over animated childish non sense. Thank you Donut.
The Tuatara is just bonkers. I had no idea that you could run pretty much Eth or Meth in it. Mind blown. 🤯
And you're right about the F5. It seems between that and the Tuatara we have been hearing about them for 15 years now. Can't wait to see them attempt an actual speed record (without trying to cheat)
Big ups to Nolan for pronouncing Tuatara correctly 👍
Still, very strange to name a stupidly fast car after a lizard from New Zealand 😂
@@LockieNZ I seem to recall at announcement it was named because of something special about how the Tuatara evolved/s or something, but yeah it’s a weird name for a hypercar (or any car)
Up to speed on Cleetus
GENTLEMEN START UP YOUR ENGINESSSSSSSS
Europe in not a country, but a continent.
The highways of Italy are called the autostrada.
Keep up the good work everyone, I've watched almost all of your videos!
Bring back UTS!
I would love to see a HiLow muscle car series!
“The country of Europe”
It's not even a real continent
Yeah, and the only "country" to use litters to measure engine displacement.
Ditch past gas and invest the time in more videos like these 💪 ❤️

Facts
The 1970 Buick 455 Stage 1, with 510lbft of torque, made the most torque from a production engine until the Viper was released. There was an available stage 2 package that could be ordered from dealers as well that made over 500hp.
I wish I had 15000 to turbo my little civic..i would be happier than own supercars....keep up the good work guys..best car channel on ytube...
Didn't like this list at all. Yall remained fixated on such a small period and the origin of engines. Where the hell are the koeniggzeggs, the zenvos, the czingers and so many more. There was no classification by decade or induction, price.
8:02 "in the COUTRY of Europe" you can tell by this sentince that American school sistem sucks
A few questions about what you wrote: what is a COUTRY? What is a sentince? What is a sistem?
@@bwofficial1776 well obviously i meant country and sentence and a sistem is a system in my country do i really say sorry if i type too fast most people would read normal and filled the words with missing letters
I put off watching this video for four days because I thought it would be boring but I’ll be damned you guys seem to make every single topic interesting
The LT5 in the C4 Corvette ZR1 deserved a mention here. One of the few good engines coming out of America at the time.
talking about late 90s/early 2000s and bringing up the charger r/t instead of an svt cobra is mind blowing
Nolan in a Pontiac GTO is surprisingly fitting.. This felt like an old school Wheelhouse episode. Loved it..
"So powerful that power loses meaning" is exactly how I feel... like I genuinely wouldn't want a care with more than, say, 400hp.
My dad is about to buy an M340i and I'm stoked to drive it. Still working on getting my mk6 GTI up to about 300hp, and that will be perfect for me
A million more videos like this one PLEASE!!!!
Not having the Countach be mentioned alongside the F40 and 959 is insane
i dont usually comments but that VALKYRIE rev sound gave me goosebumps
9:15 I love the windows error sound used when widows were mentioned.
Donut you inspires me very much, I love cars too.
4:36 "Also Canada" Thanks editor 👍
Ive actually ridden in a early 427 vette, owner was rich af gave no fs drove like it too, told me after a fresh rebuild it was dynoed at 550 not sure if that’s wheel or crank, but the car was a monster and only had lap belts so
"as long as I can go fast, that's all I care about" - amen brother
Nolan in a Pontiac GTO is surprisingly fitting.. Would love to see "Driving every SRT ever made".
Ngl it’s really cool that you guys got a continental sponsor
That Bugatti Bolide is just crazy, can’t wait to see it on the track and dragstrip
12:01"reliable"😂😂😂 I love what your editors did there
Surprised that the devel sixteen wasnt mentioned, that engine is a MONSTER
Me sobbing with joy because I bought the last GTO they ever made last month and now I can feel included in car history
3:41 Weird uncle? Nah it's just my weird dad's car.
Awesome vid. Great attitude on electric motors at the end too. Donut is great.
The 90's ZR1 Engine (I Think it was the LT5) was developed by Lotus and they gave it to GM with well over 500hp. But GM stated that it was too much power and had it decreased to 380hp.
I have personally owned multiple Camaro's (3), Firebird T/A, GTO and Challenger SRT 392. American Muscle/Sports cars are just the best!
The ending statement is spot on Nolan. Comparing what they are making now and using an ACTUAL horse to calculate is kinda silly. It DOES lose its meaning. Not many people can fathom a fathom! LOLS!!!
Edit: I love and miss you Jimmy!!
what about the new zenvo with the big quat turbo v12 with 1250 hp
The 429 was a 385 series engine. The 427 and 428 were FE engines. Yes, the term hemi stands for hemispherical but not for the top of the piston. Hemi in that instance is the combustion chamber.
That ethanol magic, every Brazilian found out. Chevy Opala, when converted to alcohol, got a nice little bump to power...
Great video. I hope a video of the American pony car resurgence is in the works, you kinda skimmed over the best part of the story.
You forgot one . . . The Devel Sixteen has a Steve Morris Racing V 16 quad turbo engine that produces around 4500 hp. Yes I know the Devel 16 isn’t quite a production car mostly because they don’t have a transmission for it . . . But the SMR V 16 is proven.
Omg, that Astin Marton sounded beautiful
No one noticed how the beginning looked like an episode of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives? Lol Donut Media you guys are the best
This deserves a like for the Valkyrie clip alone
