- Finally got around to doing this!
I play all of Marty Friedman's solos on Rust in Peace without distortion. This is really unforgiving and was exhausting to track, especially on a 22 fret guitar with 10-52 gauge strings lmao.
I would switch between a clean signal and a lead tone for my tracks and even sloppier tracking sounded great, kind of makes you think...
Anyway enjoy!
Why no Mustaine solos?
Because as much as I love listening to him shred, I don't enjoy copying his style of soloing, what I love about Marty is how precise and intricate his playing is!

I just PRAISE the first Dire Straits album for its originality and raw power... Before mark lost his edge and turned out to the "daddy rock team" like many others, david gilmour, eric clapton, so sad... At least we have that very inspirational moment in time preserved and contained

What in particular was sloppy about it...? He was hitting the notes. Bends were in tune. Legato work was articulate. What was sloppy?
Personally, it's just pointless to do these solos clean. Like it's great that he can do them clean, but it's boring.

Super cool idea! So many hide behind distortion as a way to mask inaccuracies. Playing without distortion is a great way to tell is you can cleanly play something-which you def can.
peterjuff Distortion has it’s own set of challenges though, sounding clean being the biggest one.

Playing with higher gain is much more challenging than playing clean.
Any Monkey Music you only have to focus on muting with high gain, no dynamics. I think the hardest tones are classic rock and traditional metal.
Really, even with distortion a bad player sounds like shit.

This is amazing and a cool way to practice solos too weather covering or doing originals cause the distortion hides mistakes this helps with playing perfectly really cool man keep it up!

You know you've got a solo dialled when you can play it with out the bacon saving distortion. This, was dialled.

You know you can play a solo well (got it dialled) with out using distortion covering your mistakes up (saving your bacon- UK expression no clue what it's origin is, but it means 'saving your ass' [i.e. from embarrassment at not being able to actually play well] e.g. _"I was totally broke but then a friend saved my bacon and lent me money to pay the bills."_ ). This, was perfect. (dialled)

I had to learn half the solos on Hangar 18 once for a gig. This brings back memories of sitting in front of the tv, unplugged guitar trying to get all Marty’s weird timings and fingerings figured out. It took learning that song to realize how much of an original guitarist he is, and it opened my eyes to Megadeth
