- Hey there!
The reason I recorded this video is simply to show the brilliance of Chuck’s Guitar lines, how beautiful and melodic these riffs are and why I’m so influenced by them. I’ve always loved playing these riffs without any distortion because of how beautiful they sound, so all I did was put them together and record them as they are. No distortion, no nothing, just raw beautifulness.
Hope you guys will enjoy this just as much as I enjoyed making it. It was really fun.

@@magdachlebicka3895 Hardware is physical, like a hard drive or motherboard. Software is a program. Video games are software, Microsoft Office, stuff like that. Software runs on hardware so I guess it would be classical musician software running on metal hardware or something like that.

Chucks riffs are just weirdly magical, hard to describe, but they are.
Feel like when you're really into a lot of Death or Black, and I am much more heavily into Black Metal, this is what you're hearing, the emotional content of these riffs cuts through all of the noise and distortion and energy, and that's what I get out of it, a lot of Black Metal tracks make me almost cry with their beauty, so hard to make friends and others understand.

To me, those melodies have some strong greek/mediterranean/arabic flavour to it

Maybe cause Chuck used a lot the fifth mode of the Harmonic Minor scale, the Phrygian Dominant. Well Phrygian Dominant is widely used in traditional middle eastern and southeastern european music.
But the intent is not that, to make some middle eastern stuff no. But without distortion the middle easterness of this scale sometimes gets unlocked.
Chuck loved it cause it has this particular evil metal flavour if you know how to compose with it, and not play accidentally sacred hebrew chants ahahhahahaa.

I was recording in LA a couple of years ago and me and my buddy went for a beer in a tavern at Sunset Blvd, the guy behind the balcony asked if we liked Metal, we both long haired dudes said yes and he asked if we liked Death, I immediately said that I grew up on Sound of Perseverance and the guy said "Chuck was my cousin" - We were both speechless, he talked about they used to go down to the beach and Chuck always stayed playing the guitar in the garage all day long amongst other cool stuff you can only hear from a relative. That was the best break we could have from a session!

You can attribute that to a combination of the heavy use of minor scales and how we've been exposed to similar sounds in horror movies. It makes me really reminiscent of Tubular Bells from The Exorcist.

Problem with this is that you need an expensive guitar to sound good on a clean tone.
Cheap guitars will never sound good on a clean tone.

Everytime I hear Chuck, I just wonder bout the writing process. Sure, it's difficult to play and sing on top of it but I wish I could get into the headspace that can create something so unique, original, deeply emotional and fit it perfectly in a context of extreme metal. It sounds so good clean, sounds devastatingly aggressive with distortion.

Very sad that I've shown so many people Death and they turned them down because of the vocals and distortion. I'm so happy to be somebody that thrives on vocals and distortion like that. It's a gift, that many people will not receive, to enjoy a band like Death.

That happened to me so often with so many bands. That's the reason why I stopped showing my music to my friends, maybe it's a little sad but in my loneliness I enjoy pretty much the music that I hear.

death and black metal have undoubtedly beautiful riffs even in acoustic
I'd like to think that if Chuck was alive today, he would hear this and absolutely be motivated to put out a Death acoustic album. Would've been crazy to hear the man himself do this sort of take on his music.
considering the directions he was taking before dying, he would have probably done some less metal oriented projects by the 2010, like jazzy, prog rock stuff with less distorsion and screams and bigger emphasize on melodies, chord progressions and clean vocals.. just my opinion tho
I knew Chuck was a pretty good lead player, with his unique Phrygian-esque phrasing, but this video showed me that his mastery was also evident in his rhythm playing. Truly a terrible loss. Of all people, it happened to one of the best. Rest in peace, Chuck Schuldiner.
I think best way is to practice playing without distortion because every mistake is very obvious. Your picking is spotless!! Thanks for showing how beautiful is Chucks music.
A lot of people say this however when you practice with distortion it amplifies all of your mistakes

I learned some of my first Death riffs on an acoustic guitar just because that’s all I had at the time and I remember how surprised I was that it sounded so good. Most other metal left me unsatisfied without being plugged into a Marshall stack but I enjoyed just sitting on the porch playing Death on acoustic.
I would hope you learned Voice of the Soul. The acoustic on that one is killer

It really is a pity that Chuck didn't have enough time to develop some lighter pieces (which he actually wanted to do). I would love to hear more of Chuck's songs in the style of this video, even though I love the distortion too.

Damn. I was a hardcore Death fan as a teen early 90’s. I play a lot of middle eastern music & So many of Chucks riffs would sound so gorgeous on an oud.

hey man im sure this comment will get lost in the noise, but if you see this: you played so tight and clean man. As a metal guitarist as well, i know how turning off the distortion can show how sloppy the playing really is but this was just TIGHT as hell. great job man.
yeah i fuck up so much playing clean. and goddamn that tone is really nice with the chorusy kinda effect. the trem picking was super clean and in time which is insanely hard to do on a clean setting.
I play cello, of course a classical musician, meaning I live in the world of complex finger patterns and odd shifts with tons of unpredictability as a string player. Chuck Schuldiner's riffs are very complex and definitely seem technically demanding. To compose such music such as death's requires immense proficiency at your instrument. Another thing I love about Chuck's writing is one thing we as classical musicians focus on soo much more than technical proficiency..the feel...He never cared for highly impressive tapping, sweep picking, or blazing scales.

Chuck had a distinct style and voice when playing. You just KNEW Chuck Schuldiner when he played. The mark of an elite guitarist/ musician.

Chuck was so ahead of his time. I wish he was still with us but he at least got to finish his magnum opus before his passing. Chuck holds a special place in my heart not just musically but because he and my mom both passed from the same cancer just 6 months apart.
I had brain cancer a few years later after Chucks passing.
I listened to his music during cancer treatments.

I feel so privileged to have seen Death in 1998.It was the gratest gig I ve been in my life and I have been in hundreds. The performance was beyond all expectations.I ve watched all established and not death metal bands live with very few exceptions but Death and Chuck had something so unique performance-wise that I cant express with words.
Without judgement played clean is enough to make a grown man cry. Fuck that was beautiful.
This music sounds so beautiful without distortion. I was lucky enough to see Death live in Santa Clara on the Individual Thought Patterns tour 93. Fond memories of a great musician and innovator of metal music. R.I.P. Chuck!

Ive tried writing riffs with a dry signal for years. The theory being, if it sounds great dry... those are incredible riffs with or without distortion...
It sounds like a good idea if you're really going for melodic. Celtic Frost wrote some monstrous riffs though, and no way would they sound good clean.

I didnt to that everytime But often i play my guitar unplugged and mostly i play melodic stuff then cause it sound better. Sometimes i end up with using this for a chorus etc.
But these riffs aren't dry, there is a lot of reverb going on

I'm a longtime Death fan. But when you play their songs on acoustic, you start to realize how ahead of his time Chuck actually was.

Chuck was a genius and an incredibly talented musician, professional and a down right fantastic human being. He was taken away from us far too soon, it’s true what they say, the brightest starts burn out the quickest. These riffs sound just as great clean as they do with distortion, that’s a hallmark of great writing. There isn’t a single Death album that I don’t enjoy, they all have something different to offer and I like to think of each album as a journey that Chuck embarked on, progressing and growing as a musician and a human being. What made Death even better were the other fellow musicians that he surrounded himself with, especially the Human era. Hail to Chuck and rest in peace to a legend that got me into more extreme metal.

Chuck was an absolute legend. Being this incredible on guitar while also being able to do vocals is a one in a life time kind of person.

This is just what us guitarists of heavy/ speed metal need! People who claim it's all just playing anything or whatever can now see the complex art. Unleashed is the melodic masterpieces shown in the raw form, there's no "hiding behind distortion" as many accuse heavy metal of. Bravo!

Doing these riffs without the distortion definitely brings out the technicality and geniusly written melodies and guitar lines that probably would be less prominent if overlayed with distortion. Amazing playing!

For many years, I've played Tool, Pantera, Megadeth and others on accoustic guitar. For much the same reason; impressive guitar compositions do not require distortion.
Dude, you NAILED those riffs. Chuck is without a doubt one of the best and most underrated guitarists of all time. He’s The Godfather of death metal, the guy basically created the entire genre, and he’s still the best example of the genre’s best. wherever he is, Heaven, hell, limbo, passive non-existence, I’m sure this video made him smile.

This is awesome. This is why I spend time trying to write metal songs on an acoustic, or at least really focusing on the lines as opposed to the sound of the chunk or the distortion. Too many bands hide behind the distortion. Strip it back and a lot of it is really boring.

@@jrk10 Clearly you've never played Gojira unplugged lmfao. One of my favorite things to do is play Gojira on acoustic. The grit of the steel adds texture and sounds amazing. Or Gojira on a classical guitar is great too. If you're not technically trained, yeah, everything "unplugged" sounds bad if you don't know your dynamic tone well

Malo Lupo I just meant the raised 7th gives it that Egyptian sound mostly and not as a whole. And natural harmonic and harmonic are the same thing, but I see the confusion of me putting natural harmonic because of natural minor.
Being a pedantic it’s not really a raised 7th. Since everything is based on the major scale the harmonic minor scale is a minor scale with a major 7th.

As much as I love early Death, I find myself going back to the later Death songs like these BECAUSE they are so melodic. His early stuff was great and pioneering for sure, but you can clearly see Chuck’s evolution as he progressed. I know there are TrV Kvlt assholes that say later Death is lame but I disagree completely.
Nah man I'm with you. A lot of prog bands and newer death metal tried to copy TSoP tone and feel. You can just tell that chuck really set the standard for basically the genre
