when I was thirteen, I had my first love There was nobody that compared to my baby And nobody came between us no one could ever come above She had me goin' crazy Oh, I was starstruck She woke me up daily Don't need no Starbucks
I love classic poetry and I was enveloped in sonnets for about a year, but I came to a point when I was like, I want to be more aware of today’s culture because I discount its value so easily. But I started reading things like Rupi Kaur and others with a similar style.... and as hard as I tried to understand it, it just felt like I was reading obvious statements. How is one line, or like 3 words, a poem? Sometimes they don’t even sound lyrical. I feel like people use the term poetry too lightly now because they think anything can be poetry if you just say it is. But I don’t think that’s true. I think some of these tiny obvious statements are good starting points. They had an idea, but they never got around to actually writing the poem.
Please don't give up on contemporary poetry though! There are so many different writers working in different ways and personally I'm really excited about where poetry is going right now. I may be biased though, having spent 4 years studying it...🙈
I felt that way reading Milk and Honey. There were some nice lines, some of which really hit me, but it felt so underbaked. It seemed like obvious statements that I myself could write in five minutes. I see why that could be valuable in art; it makes it relatable. It’s nice to read something and think “Wow, that’s exactly how I feel”. However, when I read a book or poem, I like to discover something new. I like to be challenged. I don’t want to pay $12 at Target just to read poems I could’ve written during a 3 am Cheeto binge. Just my two cents.
OH MY GOD okay so i always thought poetry was about the number of lines, stanzas, etc, and the rhythm and all of that (if that makes sense) and then i get instagram and i see people posting a three lined "poem" and they're like yo check out my poetry book. And im just sitting here like. My life? Is a? Lie?
The problem with Rupi Kaur style of poetry is that it requires no knowledge or skill pertaining to rhythm or good word usage. If you read anything by Carol Ann Duffy, then Rupi's simple ass concepts seem so tweeny. Yes, I'm all for being raw and accessible but if people want vague sentences with no smooth flow or intelligent comparisons then they should just read indie song lyrics.
Imma be honest, these books piss me off. Rainforest ecosystems are dying for pretty but lazy covers and five to twenty words per page. Good vid nonetheless.
These books help a lot of people and provide a safe place for people who are dealing with stuff. Like Rupi Kaurs book Milk and Honey helped me through when I was sexually assaulted.
Ashley High_Poetry I’m sorry about what happened to you. I hope things are going better. I just wish the published authors put more care into their work. Perhaps some of what they are saying comes from a place of real concern and feeling, but I feel it is on them to improve their work and strive to be the best they can be, and not encourage the spread of what seems to usually be mediocrity and works of little effort. Have a good day.
I actually liked The Princess Saves Herself In This One- but the truly annoying thing about this books is THE AMOUNT OF WASTED PAPER OVER A 5 WORD POEM
@@itsdivyag Honestly, "it's a metaphor for life!" was my answer to all questions in English literature. And "we must come together as a community and end this injustice!" was the ending to every essay I wrote in writing skills sections, but nevermind.
Instagram poetry is out of style, I’m working on a new line of Insta-DAMN poetry. Because it makes people say DAMN but in a good way, maybe with a backwards lean y’know
um i think you meant i am working on a new line of insta-damn poetry because it makes people say damn but in a good way -maybe with a backwards lean y'know
I do like some of Rupi Kaur's poetry (my favourite is 'accent'), probably because I am the same ethnicity as her and could relate to the cultural references. But I don't really care for the generic statements like 'to be soft is to be powerful' and that one about food/society. Not particularly creative. I was reading that Kaur self-published Milk and Honey after going through a rough time and wasn't expecting the extreme success that she got. Which means there was a market for it. Maybe there were other girls that had come out of hard situations and it felt good to see what they were feeling written down, even if it was just 'obvious statements'. I first heard about Milk and Honey from my best friend (same ethnicity as me), who read it after she was raped and was telling me about how much she liked it and related to it. I do also think some of the criticism of the overall style happens because it's 'popularised' poetry (especially among young women, so it's seen as cringy and basic). Sort of like how people like Andre Rieu are criticised by classical musicians, or when celebrity fragrances are sometimes side-eyed by perfume enthusiasts, because it brings their niche interest to the masses and makes it more accessible (so they become dismissive).
Thank you for sharing! I agree, often the media likes to dismiss things which women generally like, but that's not to say some criticism is invalid. Many people are touched by her poetry and if it brings more people to appreciate art then that's a positive.
itsdivya Definitely true. There are some very valid criticisms to be made (I've even been hearing something about plagiarism accusations??) but the disdain for people who say they like this poetry style just comes across as a bit elitist to me. Like having a differing opinion is obviously fine and respectful discussions are really interesting to read/watch, but just shitting on something (and people who enjoy it) for the sake of it being popular is something I'm not a fan of.
@@sarahrth3761 Nothing wrong with liking trashy poetry (if that's what you're into), but you still gotta accept the fact that it's trashy poetry... Considering Kaur's insta-poems as serious or profound poetry is like considering Stephanie Meyer's works being on the same level as Dostoevsky's or even, let's say, Cormac McCarthy's work: it just ain't grounded in reality. Objectivity or personal taste has nothing to do with it...
Heaven Lee That's true, and I never said it was on the same literary level as poets like Faiz Ahmad Faiz or Mirza Ghalib. That's why I used the analogies. Like if you have ever smelled most celebrity perfumes, you'll notice they are generically sweet/fruity/floral and they mostly end up smelling pretty similar (though occasionally you can find one that seems to have something a bit more). But then if you smell perfumes from established designers (eg. Guerlain, Dior, Chanel) and niche brands, you can pick out more unique and complex scent combinations. I think that's like the difference between insta-poetry and 'real' poetry. Also this ( www.npr.org/2018/07/05/626300259/the-celebrity-perfume-is-back ) is an article I read that mentions how the one of the first celebrity perfumes (Britney Spears) was the first to properly tap into the market of young girls. I think this is what Rupi Kaur, Amanda Lovelace, and similar insta-poets have done, whether it was intentional or not.
I think that calling those twitter poems "poems" it's like calling a stick man drawing "art"..... There will always be someone asking "but what defines art? maybe the drawing IS art", so WHATEVER -if I say so, is this comment a poem?
LPS love and game Mmm I don't know, that definition is too Romantic for me, we feel emotions all the time after all. A line on the supermarket irritates me, vomit makes me feel disgust, my teacher classes make me feel boredom. I think that art isn't something that makes you feel things but something that has been crafted with caution to touch our sensibility. I can't see that in a stick man drawing as I can't see it in those twitter poems, that seem more rushed than my homework. Anyway, the food one was funny. I liked it
As a poet I always felt so demotivated to see such kind of poetry getting such recognition and the true originality of poetry being reduced to their idea of aesthetics. I am glad to see there are people who still understand real shit.
I had incredibly high expectations for Milk and Honey since I'd heard very good things about it I ended up not only being disappointed, but actually mad at how shit the "poetry" was. I just really hated it
I don't know if you follow the booktuber Ariel Bissett, but she's releasing a documentary later this month about insta-poetry. It looks like it's going to be good, you might enjoy it.
sometimes this style looks like it’s trying to be self pitiful, too relatable, and draw too much attention. It almost sounds immature, like a 6th graders instagram caption. But it’s supposed to match an aesthetic, so you have to put that in your mind.
I have such mixed feelings about this type of poetry because I do get the feeling that it's just statements and the memes make me laugh, but this kind of poetry is kind of what pushed me to start writing my own stuff. I realised it didn't need to be too fancy, it just had to be real to me.
You were Karen I was Paul We had 2 kids named Sam and Saul, Now I'm in the garden The roses so red The violets so blue Where are the kids, Karen What did I do
I actually loved the first poem you read from The Princess Saves Herself in This One, but everything else in that and Milk and Honey seemed so... disappointingly simple. Yesss, I love hearing people read their own poems aloud. Then, you know exactly how it's meant to be read.
It really makes it so different, doesn't it? These styles probably aren't for us and they're targeting a specific audience. Oh well, on the journey to discovering what we love!
when you think a TH-camr is going to criticize and mock something and instead they do a really informative and in-depth analysis... 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 I've been curious about these insta-poetry books but also apprehensive.. thanks to you I now know I won't bother with Rupi Kaur but I am interested in Amanda Lovelace based on the poems you read aloud
I think Milk and Honey was inspired by Salt by Nayyirah Waheed. Kaur's poems have almost the exact same style and very similar themes as Waheed's. I don't want to say she plagerised but it disturbs me that she's so much more popular. It's like Katy Perry's song Roar copying Sara Bareilles' Brave all over again.
Honestly I don’t mind these kinds of poems. While I realize that the craft behind them is not as intricate or intensive as more traditional poems, I think the short statements are great to reflect on. I think that the writers are able to provoke further thought in the reader by not necessarily elaborating on their points, thereby allowing the reader to draw his or her own conclusion. I also think that, while may of the statements are not necessarily original, they are things that many of us can forget on a daily basis, things as simple as remembering to love and respect ourselves. I also, as a prose writer, enjoy Kaur’s interesting imagery because I think it challenges me to see the physical world in my own unique way. But I also realize these poems aren’t for everyone. It just depends on what you want your poetry to be.
When I write poetry, I use the same format as instapoets but I try to incorporate literary elements with the purpose of digging deeper because statement-like poems are so...bland. It's really surface level and not that unique.
As someone that has read Milk and Honey ,I must say it may be trendy for "Art hoes"to have it or for "Aesthetic" it really does dive into many dark topics such as abandonment, sexual assault, heartbreak, abuse, ect. It was a vary good book and I feel should be more appreciated for diving in to such topics.
omg i went to college with nhi the poet!! she bleached my hair blonde for a student film. i'm so surprised to see her book featured in a video. this feels like such a small world now! also, divya divya eating sugar?
Honestly "milk and honey" pissed me off cause if that's poetry I don't know wtf I've been doing spending weeks and months on 1 poem like holy cow I was so irritated reading that stuff!
I appreciate the defence, personally I dislike this type of poetry but I can understand why it appeals to some people. In my opinion, it's okay for something to be difficult to untangle, for me that's part of the fun haha. I like seeing what I can find. I guess when I read a poem I appreciate the fact that the poet has put thought into every word, sometimes minimalist poetry doesn't feel like that Then again I have liked a minimalistic poem before because I liked the way it made me feel? Idk tbh what is poetry Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
As a concept, i think insta-poetry is brilliant. It may seem simplistic and “childish”, but to be quiet honest, poetry is already the most “pretentious” genre in the world. Young people these days are under so much pressure to be perfect writers. This seems like a Rebellion. Why not let young authors ramble in bite sized thought nuggets? Why are pure, unadultured feelings cringy? Shakespeare isn’t cringy. If anything, the poets are experimental artists. They create in a medium so strange, so contemporary, that everyone can relate to it in some way. Just a thought haha
Ella Starbrook Exactly! Poetry doesn’t have to rhyme in order to be called poetry right? Sure, insta-poetry is short and simple and full of excess spaces but the thought and heart of it is nonetheless there. I personally love free verse and modern poetry because it has no limitations ❤️
@@C3lestialbodies not really Shakespeare was literally just saying fuck it when he wrote his plays. He even made up words. He knew his plays were wacky. The only pretentious people are the one calling his work genius. Even he knew they were memes
Some of those poems are rough drafts imo. Like, they wrote down "everyone I love leaves" and instead of writing something to portray that they just said it. It's like they just wrote the idea of a poem, not the poem itself.
here i am, on the net, surfing the web in search of something, something dear, something far, but oh so near, for quality is so hard to find, in a worldwide web like yours and mine, made so many icons and so many stars, but i try and i try and it never is enough for my place in the world in unfortunate and tough a mistake on behalf of media mediocrity in a region of government ferocity i don’t know why i take a sigh and look at the news another article about the eu, and in desperate hope, i look for a meme sadly, i can’t because there’s article 13 that was my crappy attempt at writing tumblr-insta poetry. i’m going to go read turtles all the way down for the fifteenth time while drinking my pumpkin spice latte now. i’m sorry if you actually bothered to read all of this
divya should start a clothing line because i just realised we have the same glasses and i'd love an overpriced t-shirt i could find at tesco to go with them 😍😍😍
But there needs to be something smart and clever in the lyrics and more than just one line. You cannot just state the most basic random thoughts everyone's had and call it poetry smh
I got recommended one video and here I am an hour later binging all of them. Honestly had a crap day and you’re lovely smile and humor have made me feel so much better
i didn’t know how i felt about it either i feel like a lot of it is just cheesy and like fake deep but i read this one by the same author who wrote the princess saves herself in this one it’s called the witch doesn’t burn in this one and it’s all about being a woman and how men see us and stuff and its actually pretty good and i enjoyed it more than i thought i would
I liked that one too! I did feel like only a few of the poems were memorable, but having experienced some of the stuff she talked about in the book, I appreciated it.
that dress poem was just her playing with the enter key to make a shape poem(shape of a dress) I really like your critical commentary like an essay voiced
"These books were like a Celebration box and I was getting a lot of Bounty but I just wanted the Maltesers" This sentence has more colourful imagery than the entirety of Milk and Honey lol
I actually kind of like the "Everyone I love leaves" one because it's just that one sentence on an otherwise blank, empty piece of paper. It gives off the feeling that the sentence is truly alone, as everyone it has loved had already left. Sure, it could just be a tweet, but having it be a tweet would erase that cool formatting trick, as well as the fact it's coupled with tons of other poetry. When you got poems with multiple lines on every page, turning the page to see something as blunt as "everything I love leaves" in what is essentially the void hits hard imo. As a sentence alone, I don't think its poetry, but given the context of the format and the fact it's in a book of poetry, I find it resonates with me emotionally, and I think that context is PART of the poem that cannot be removed from it.
I’ve never really looked into modern poetry, I just assumed it’s all about the aesthetically pleasing covers and the poems itself are not that important, but after this video I’m officially intrigued. I will definitely check out Graffiti and Bottleneck Dreams. Thanks!

It's actually so interesting hearing people's opinions on this tysm!
Some of us try to write more traditional poetry but we don't get the views on Instagram

Indie song lyrics can be pretty great... But I get your point.
Agreed but some indie songs or even pop like lana del rey have better lyrics lmao

Nothing wrong with liking trashy poetry (if that's what you're into), but you still gotta accept the fact that it's trashy poetry...

The most bone definition of art is something that provokes emotion. So if you get annoyed seeing those, it's art.

I am glad to see there are people who still understand real shit.

sometimes this style looks like it’s trying to be self pitiful, too relatable, and draw too much attention. It almost sounds immature, like a 6th graders instagram caption. But it’s supposed to match an aesthetic, so you have to put that in your mind.

This. This is the comment. Omg yes the book is not exactly bad it just seams like a bunch of quotes and that it’s missing the actual text.
I have such mixed feelings about this type of poetry because I do get the feeling that it's just statements and the memes make me laugh, but this kind of poetry is kind of what pushed me to start writing my own stuff. I realised it didn't need to be too fancy, it just had to be real to me.

I've been curious about these insta-poetry books but also apprehensive.. thanks to you I now know I won't bother with Rupi Kaur but I am interested in Amanda Lovelace based on the poems you read aloud
I personally preferred Lovelace's poetry but that's because I connected to the topic of her poetry more and it was more lighthearted.
I've heard of Salt, never read it though. Any good?
That depends on your taste. The poems themselves are simple reads, just like Kaur's.

Okay lets get one thing clear... Shakespeare is completely pretentious 😂

Some of those poems are rough drafts imo. Like, they wrote down "everyone I love leaves" and instead of writing something to portray that they just said it. It's like they just wrote the idea of a poem, not the poem itself.

I liked that one too! I did feel like only a few of the poems were memorable, but having experienced some of the stuff she talked about in the book, I appreciated it.
How does it compare to the first book? I might give it a try
that dress poem was just her playing with the enter key to make a shape poem(shape of a dress) I really like your critical commentary like an essay voiced
U know what you got points here
I’ve never really looked into modern poetry, I just assumed it’s all about the aesthetically pleasing covers and the poems itself are not that important, but after this video I’m officially intrigued. I will definitely check out Graffiti and Bottleneck Dreams. Thanks!
