I’ve been writing long ass, well researched poems and i still feel awkward and drain in self doubt when posting them on Instagram but I’ve connected to some really good poets and writers and they appreciate my work and are so supportive. That is what keeps ke going 💛 thanks for this video😭 i feel more confident and in no way am i saying that these poets are trash, they’re where they are because they worked for it and people actually like reading their pieces and on Instagram, not everyone wants to read long poems and proses but “instapoetry”. So if you’re feeling low and lost and losing motivation because you don’t have enough audience yet, i just want to say that You might not have a lot of followers but you will always have some genuinely supportive readers and fellow writers, do not give up!! 💛

I went to school for English, so I got to sit through a poetry read or two. Here's the reason why these poems are so bad. A typical poem, at least the ones that are highly praised in the English major community, tend to be very artistic and descriptive. The thing about those poems though, is that they are not just filled with non - sequiturs and are not just artsy for artsy sake. They are really creative in their wordplay and their messages. I feel like Instagram poets read these really powerful poems and see how creative they are, so they try to fit the mold of the poems in order to get praise. The problem is that a really good poem comes from the heart. If you just try to emulate something that gets accolades and there is no heart or emotion behind what you are writing, it will literally just be words on a page. It comes off as really pretentious and inauthentic. This is the difference between an A+ and a C- paper. This is my advice for anyone struggling with writing: don't just try to fit a mold in order to be a good writer. Also, don't use big words if you don't know what they mean. The person grading the paper can tell.

    • @catherinecampbell1215
      @catherinecampbell1215 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@topple To me it is a little bit of both. If you are emotionless, the poem will come across as too formulaic. I get where you are coming from though.

Plenty of instagram poets that are terrible, male and female. Honestly, it’s such a scourge. They might be popular and raking in cash, but a genuine poet would never feel jealous. Selling the soul of your art like a cheap prostitute isn’t exactly something legitimately significant poets aspire to.

this is hilarious! I think the truth, and it's been said before, is that insta poetry is for people who don't like poetry. And, I suppose, don't worry if you're not popular as a poet, I think T S Eliot said something like good poetry usually isn't popular. And I have tried the instagram thing-- started around 3 months ago-- mostly sonnets and aphoristic little things (which seem to suit the medium) and I have all of ten followers lol. Anyway, subcribed!

I totally disagree with everything you say.
I understand the annoyance of those poems or "poems", they are really very weak but they are really judgments of hostile scholars.
    what is a poem?
do you really know what a poem is? - It is not something that can be defined, nor does it have certain laws or certain judgments, certain techniques.
Romantics like Novalis, Shelly, Coleridge. worthswood. even poets like Octavio Paz, Anna Ajmatova, Matsuo Bashō and the list can go on say that poetry cannot be defined, in fact they say that poetry does not have to be complicated, it has to come from the soul.
one definition could be divine creation, nature, misunderstood legislation of the world.
There is a very good essay by Novalis called on the poet and poetry, where he tries to define it and talks about art for art's sake, the ordinary man and the artist.
I understand your annoyance with these poems, but I don't see why to criticize and criticize people who want to be a poet, in fact I applaud it, it is a very noble science, it is even one of the oldest sciences there is. Uniting the intellect (imagination) with the soul is not something that everyone does so easily.
instead of criticizing so much because you do not put yourself rather to write. If you think it's so easy, then write poetry (I don't think it will come out as clean as you might think)
My invitation is that if there are people who want to be a poet and their work is not very good, then let them be, the world is a very hostile terrain to continue attacking each other with literary works.
For people like you, the world of literature is such a closed and hostile niche.
incredible that people want to write poetry, want to be a poet. in the long run, writing (novels, short stories, poems, etc.) is like boxing, not the first person who strikes survives but the one who remains in the ring.

I'm one of the insta male poets. Guilty as charged LOL
    An Ode To The Moon
    -------------------------------------------------
I am roaming the emptiness of the desert.
The moon's rotund fullness hangs in the void of the heavens,
Mid-way to the unseen horizon in the East.
The moon threatens to plummet into the desert floor,
Yet it maintains its oversight above its dominion.
The dulcet tones of the moon's milky-white soothe me,
But it is not my body they charm,
They pierce the ramparts to an unfathomable chamber in the bedrock of my soul.
And I feel a joy not confined to the borders of my flesh.
It is a joy emanating from deep within me,
And yet it belongs to us all.
And then I ask: Why is it that the sun's strong light exposes my body,
Yet the moon's milky-white exposes my soul?
I am peeking between two almost kissing cliffs.
I still my mind and then I see the snail's pace of the moon,
As it peeks at me behind the West cliff on its mission across the sky.
Gradually, almost imperceptibly, the moon's sliver advances past the cliff's edge,
And widens until it once more appears in all its rotund glory,
As it falls to the other side.
When the moon's edge reaches the other cliff it hides again,
Until once more I only see its thin sliver,
And then it is beyond my sight.
When the moon reveals this subtle dance to mine own eyes,
I feel an intimacy with it that no book can offer,
    No teacher can teach.
On this night, the crescent moon floods the recesses of my soul with its pale milky glow,
And a mystical silence envelops the desert's void.
On other nights, in other places, the silence would be dulled by a crying baby,
while her mother sings a lullaby,
Or in the desert by the plaintive shriek of an anonymous wind,
As it hurtles across the desert floor,
    To lands beyond horizon's reach.
But on this night, the silence is absolute,
And it comforts me like a blanket during this milky desert night.
