      Seems like a fundamental push to ensure that our devices get worse over time. Rather than just needing to replace the battery, OLED represents needing to replace the screen as well vs an LCD which has no such problem.

      yeah. most oled screens nowadays can handle pretty much stuff as long as you're not using it at 100% of brightness.
      my mother bought a samsung galaxy s8+ (or 9+?) in 2018 and had massive burn in after around 1 year because she cooooonstantly beefs up the brignress for no good reason.
      I was using the lumia 1020, one of the first oled-screen smarthones for fuckinf SEVEN years and had exactly ZERO burn in, because on average my brightness was always somewhere around 20-60%.
      now imagine how robust any oled panel from nowadays most probably is, especially since oled panel manufacturers are constantly optimizing not only the panels but also the pixel-refreshing-programs that basically are working while your devices are in stand-by. 😌

    Considering Nintendo designed the switch to be dockable, they probably are using power pass through when charging so that it can run straight off the usb power rather than through the battery, helping to significantly preserve battery lifespan. (Unlike phones and laptops that generally always run off battery)

    • @Valcuda
      @Valcuda ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, there are some things they use for important servers, which you plug things into, and they act as batteries, to ensure they stay on even after the power goes out.
      There are two types: One which runs of the wall, only swapping to battery power once the power goes out
      One which is constantly charging the battery, and running off that.
      The first can last quite a long time, however, there's the risk of it not swapping to the battery fast enough, causing issues with the things plugged into it.
      The second requires it's battery to be changed quite often, but has NO down time when the power goes out.
      Phones tend to be like the second, since they're expected to be off the charger more than on, and it could cause issues when the user unplugs their phone.
      I imagine the Switch is more similar to the first, since it can be reasonably expected the user will almost exclusively use it in docked mode.
      It also needs a bit of time to switch anyways, since it needs to decrease the performance, and swap to using the screen, so a couple milliseconds taken to swap won't really be noticable.

Until I saw the Pokémon Scarlet/Violet Edition, I actually considered getting a used LCD Switch instead out of concern how long the screen will last, seeing that on my OLED smartphone the navbar has burned in after less than two years. That was a 2017 model, so OLEDs weren't that refined and it doesn't have the little workarounds like pixel shift. Good to see that this problem has been practically fixed now.

      To my understanding (and personal use), CRT screens take a while to come up to full brightness, so you would be incentivized to leave the screen on, but a static image would noticeably burn-in, just like modern OLEDs do, so you would set a screen saver with a short timer (like 5 minutes) to save your screen and also prevent down time waiting for your CRT to warm up. OLEDs don't need any time to warm up though, so there's no incentive to leave them running for any reason. So basically you're killing your OLED screen even faster with a screen saver.

    Now that you've established how difficult it is to actually burn in the screen of this model, you should now run a burn in correction video on it to see how long it takes / how hard it is / to remove the burn in. I managed to remove burn in from a laptop with about 8 hours running a rapid color/black and white/pattern switching video. Since OLED is sub-pixel based wearing, perhaps creating a negative image of the burn-in image can equally wear the rest of the pixels and make it less noticeable?

    • @lucafraga95
      @lucafraga95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      You can't actually remove burn in on OLED: the way burn in occurs is that the subpixels with usage become dimmer and dimmer with time. With prolonged static elements, some subpixels will die faster than others, and this difference in brightness is perceived as a "residual image".
      What you can do to mitigate this is to use certain patterns that are designed to make them wear out even faster but evenly (some tvs and monitors have this feature built in) and you might think that the problem is fixed, but in reality your screen will just be all around less bright.

      I have a Galaxy Note 9 pretty much since release in the US about 4 years ago. I have very minimal burn in on that thing. I think it is highly based on your use case, but I have pretty much removed everything static I can. Status bar? Gone. Only have battery indicator (no percentage readout). Navigation controls? Gone, I use swipe gestures instead. My homescreen has almost been left unchanged, but that's because it doesn't matter, I'm in apps more than my home screen. No widget burn ins, no app icon burn ins.
      I have an older S7 Edge (before my Note 9) and it has burn in on the status indicator, but that's it. Overall my experience with Samsung hasn't been as bad, but it has taken a long time for me to get to that point. I think overall it's just a "mileage will vary" based on what you do and how you care for it. The only way to tell I have burn in is pure white and the status indicator area has a faint "dark" region (because it tends to put a transparent black bar in most cases). That's when I opted to hid out the status bar overall, so it's really not noticeable unless you were told how to look for it.

It is actually not a fault of either. it is the design to make them small like they are. my son's switch light is just now starting to have issues with the joy con's. can his switch was used before he got it. he is just very hard on things (already had to replace the screen and the chassis "the plastic casing the whole thing is made with" is cracking and falling apart) while my oled that i got from a pawn shop is not showing any signs of wear and it gets the snot played out of it. I think a lot of it to do is down to the amount of pressure applied to them during used increasing the wear. hell my 2nd gen xbox elite controller you can't even used the thumb stick buttons as they no longer work due to having "clutch grip" and mashing the little effers like mad during PVP matches. just my perspective.

    I remember not buying warranties for most of my life because I was always told that they're a scam, and yeah, the price is a total rip off. However, as of a few years back I began to, because my devices kept breaking right out of manufacturer coverage. Since doing so, I have cashed in the warranty on around 10 items. Not just for myself, but for gifts I bought for others. We aren't all just throwing things around either, I never drop my electronics and only use them at home. So I would say that warranties aren't always a scam necessarily, unless you mean that they make products cheaply expecting them to break so you have to buy a warranty, in which case I totally agree.

    I honestly hugely appreciate the insight from your experiment here, and it has definitely relieved some of my concerns about the idea of going OLED overall, not just with the Switch. I've been considering a 4K TV for a while, but haven't jumped on just yet for multiple reasons. Your experiment has alleviated some of my concerns, though I will admit I do still have a few concerns, and much of them just has to do with me having much higher standards with tech endurance and lifespan than the average person.
    To give context of how much life I expect out of my devices, I am still using a Pixel 2 XL after 5 years, and am only just now looking at a new phone to replace the one I have that has discontinued any support for over 2 years. And when I do get a new phone, I will be expecting it to last at least 4+ years before considering a new one. I built my PC in 2016, and am still using it unupgraded 7 years later, aside from adding more RAM (planning to get a new rig this year as well). But even more ridiculous is my TV, which is a 2010 model Samsung 1080p TV. This TV is now 13 years old and I still use it as my primary TV set.
    This is the kind of life I expect my tech to have. I simply do not like the idea of having to buy something new every couple of years or so. I hate when phone manufacturers expect us to buy new every year or 2 years when I pay $600-$900 for the thing. My view is if I spend $500 or so on something, it needs to last, because that's quite the investment for someone who not only has bills to pay, but also wants to save money for a financially well off future. That's not to say I don't like new tech, I adore new tech. I just expect that tech to last for years, and even with this experiment, I cannot help but feel an OLED TV has no chance of lasting as long as my Samsung has.
    Especially with how I treat this Samsung. My TV is almost never off, it always has something running on it, and plenty of it is things like ambient fireplaces, Skyrim backdrops on TH-cam, or just sitting on my Roku home screen. I cannot help but feel that type of use over a few years would absolutely result in some kind of burn in that would make me have to buy a TV sooner than I would have preferred. It's the reason why I have considered QLED instead of OLED, QLED just feels like it's guaranteed to have a longer life due to not being anywhere close to as sensitive to burn in as OLED, even if OLED burn in is highly unlikely. QLED just seems like the solution that eliminates the issue completely, and assures you a longer screen life. Basically exchanging a tiny amount of risk for no risk at all.
    But that's just me, and my mind may end up changing. I am absolutely open to different takes and opinions on the matter, and am absolutely open to having my mind changed. Still, your experiment has me at least feeling better about the idea of going OLED, albeit still leaving me with lifespan concerns considering the history of my TV and how I've used it.

      Honestly doesn't shock me, the main things that degrade battery life are charge cycles and heat. A charge cycle is the battery charging from 0-100 or any amount equaling 0-100. Like if you were to start playing at 100% battery and get to 50% and then charge it up fully, that would be half a cycle. Since the plugged in one never fully cycled it barely degraded. For your thermal anomaly at the end i think the difference came mostly form the fact the test one is on a metal support while the control one is on a plastic support. Metal will conduct and dissipate heat faster than plastic, helping the test one to stay cooler. + it was on the border on the furniture, so it has more air space/flow to take that heat away. And your control one which is the one you use for yourself might have more apps with some that keep running on background, so more cpu usage so more heat produced.
    So hard to conclude but we can still say that the test switch keep working well after all that time.

    If I had to guess external temps may be lower if the thermal compound has broken down and is transfering less heat to the external case. That said without having initial temps its kinda hard to say you may have just had a unit that had a better binned unit to start.

      I doubt chip binning on things like these has much effect at all these days, except in very specific kinda edge cases which are not commodity level appliance things like the Switch is.

    The only problem switch oled has is called green tint issue, you guys should talk about this problem. Nice video.
    11:30 it is a weak screen, because it has an issue call green tint.

    • @ChrisCarlos64
      @ChrisCarlos64 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This could be a faulty process of the QA or a different screen from another manufacturer. I'm not sure who they get their screens from, but the 3DS had two very different screens. An IPS screen that was much brighter and more sought after than the TN panels of other ones. I have no green tint issues on my Switch OLED personally, but I'm not saying it doesn't exist. I had a Green Tint issue with my Samsung Tab S7+ but you can calibrate the color on that screen at least, so it'd be nice if Nintendo could allow optional controls for controlling the RBG levels.

      @@Poefred bro, you know how many people have said the same thing and then I show them how to know if their screen has the problem or not and most of them for not saying all of them has the issue. I bet yours has the issue you only need to play a grey scale oled video and watch the video in a dark room and you will see the issue. Most people that say they don't have the issue is because they either don't notice or they just don't want to talk about it which in my opinion I don't understand.

    My previous work laptop battery died very early as I left it plugged in basically for two years as a desktop machine. There was a BIOS update later on that allowed for the system to be aware of the intended use and charging scenarios that I used with a replacement battery, and that helped. Hopefully the switch is smart enough in the charging logic.

    • @jamescelliers3195
      @jamescelliers3195 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you know that's what killed the battery? It could have been a power surge, or the heat caused by you having the screen down and it tucked away with bad ventilation and the heat wore it out. Lithium batteries like being at 100% all the time.

    • @CotyRiddle
      @CotyRiddle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      generally in laptops it is not really the charging that kills it it is the heat. the switch (all the models) the battery is not right next to the cpu and so the battery it's self don't get to much heat. leaving it plugged in will casue elevated temps but only during charging you got the power ic (the little chip that is responsible for controlling the charging and distributing power to everything annnnnnddd apparently the usb c port all together tend to get pretty warm to as does the cpu as it is allowed to ramp up to higher clock speeds for longer periods of time especially while docked. the battery don't generate any real heat but does get warm while Charging. It's quite funny though as most cell phones will complain about the battery being to hot while in fact it is not really the battery that's hot but the cpu.

    I legit think that if u played a screen unburning video on it for a few hours it might even fix a lot of those issues still. Oleds tend to come back if u let the pixels relax or it can look normal again if you even put the burn in. This truly doesn’t seem to be an issue

  • @Sacren365

    I think people were concerned about it because of the the flimsy stand of the original and the ongoing joystick problems. I myself wasn’t familiar with OLED so I was worried when I heard about burn in a week after having my Switch.

    Nintendo products are beasts. I still have and use regularly my original switch from when it was first released and the only issue is that it doesn’t dock (it just freezes on a black screen) which was a product issue that I think has been fixed since. My WiiU wasn’t used for a few years but when I finally set it back up and turned it on, everything worked perfectly. My 3ds and gba sp also work perfectly!

    i use an oled tv as a computer monitor. it has just around 5500 hours of panel use right now, and it's perfectly uniform, zero signs of burn-in. as long as you don't put your oled screen to flashbang you 24/7, it'll outlast its usefulness. (mine is at 35% brightness like 95% of the time, the rest at 100% brightness).
    these static image tests are cool and all, but they probably do more harm than good, because people will jump to conclusions before realizing the super unrealistic test conditions do not apply to real world use at all. still, if you actually to and think about what you're seeing, these are really cool to see.

    The footage ingest computer in my high school's TV studio was so old, the CRT had the old Adobe Rendering window literally blackened into the glass of the screen. You could see it when the screen was OFF. This was before "Creative Suite", cameras couldn't easily record high bitrate footage onto SD cards, so we had to digitize the tapes and then render out the footage onto the server for the lab. It could take this machine 45 minutes to render out 10 minutes of raw standard def footage, so imagine a class of kids rendering on this thing almost constantly.
