    Tya's Unit Tournament features epic battles between units in StarCraft 2, using music from the game's soundtrack. Units are chosen either Protoss, Terran and Zerg forces, or a co-op commander such as Raynor, Nova, Artanis, or Kerrigan. Units use their abilities as directed by a basic AI. All units use Legacy of the Void stats, the same units you'd see in SC2 e-sports controlled by the likes of Serral, Maru, and ByuN.
    Though this project is a work in progress, and there are errors that will need to be fixed, so point them out if you spot any! The resource beneath vespene is the unit's cost in the mod I run on the SC2 arcade, Direct Strike. Enjoy!

    Round 1 ▶ 150 Stalkers vs 650 Zerglings

      I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that starcraft 2 where only programmed to use 1 or 2 cores at a time. which would kinda make sense seeing as it came out in like 2010/2011. that would heavily limit the amount of stuff it could do.

      We should see how sieged liberators vs sieged Siege tanks work in match ups. Like competitions. How well can each handle the same match up and how fast ?

    Its sooo painful to see storms landing at the same location over and over. Then high templars actually used normal atk

    I find it hard to bet against stalkers literally ever because it's always who wins, an army "a" moving or an army with rock solid micro. It's just unfair.

      Stalkers with an AI that knows how to use blink are probably the best cost effective unit imo

      The stalker micro was bad for that scenario though. Against lings you want to stay clumped to minimize surface area and make surrounds difficult. But if you watch the Stalkers they keep blinking out of their clump; instantly 8 lings would jump on them and kill them. If they had just stayed in place those 8 lings would have had no damage done during that period, and blinking out means the original lings attacking that stalker could fill the gap and attack other stalkers. Blinking out just served to increase ling DPS.

      @@shawnruby7011 Watch the video, they start fighting at 0:05 and even at 0:35 stalkers are still blinking forward into the zergling cloud. It's not even close to "the first few kills". The stalkers win because they have >90% DPS uptime, whereas the lings derp out trying to wrap around.

    2/4 I was surprise by stalker's blink once again. The HT wave is quite a troll since 8 psi storms go on the same locations, else marines lose 100%

    Round2 is out of the question. Immortal vs Roach is a slaughter already, not to mention the Zealot meatshields.

      It's out of the question because roaches didn't have their speed upgrade and AI doesn't concave or stutter-step properly. Otherwise the roaches would have dominated even if Protoss was also being controlled by a player.

      @@SaulGoodman3D2049 If the Protoss holds back the Zealots and just uses them as meat shields, Protoss still wins. You can't just imagine a scenario where 1 side micros.

    + Stalkers happened as I thought they would.
    + Zealots rushed in too quick and the immortals gained no real advantage of them derping around but still won.
    - The storm placements were really the difference here but I figured it wouldn't be a big deal since there were so many marines but stimmed marines move quickly so wrong guess.
    + Thors happened exactly how I thought they would, even them losing more by the middle.

      Storm placement and timing is huge since damage from storm doesn't stack so all the energy is wasted

    I wonder if the health bars could remain hidden for say the first half of each battle or until the unit counts get low enough so that it helps to create more suspension. It makes for a more cinematic experience, because, especially on a zoomed out camera half the actual battle are just health bars. Very annoying for me personally with shield units like the Stalkers. When the scale of the battles are still very big it doesn't really provide much info. Enabling the bars later in each fight makes it more interesting.
    Thank you for being consistent with these and for continuing to improve as you've done for many years with Direct Strike!

    3/4 I missed the damn high templars one. I never know how to bet when high templars are in the mix

      Honestly that one was 1 or two good storms from going the other way. If a couple of high templar had gotten stuck on pathing early on, they'd storm in between other storms, which would lead to less wasted storms and more dead marines, more than enough to make up for the 14 that survived. So it's pretty much a coin toss.

      no stalkers are still terrible he just used micro and blinks for the stalkers but didn't even wrap around the Zerglings. They probably weren't crack lings either. Even a tiny micro for the lings would let them win that EASILY at at that much lower army value as well. Especially in an open field. Let alone on creep.

    In many of these battles, formation is 90% of the victory condition.
    For melee types, they are disadvantaged if they attack from the front only and would have fared much better if they get a surround at the start.
    The outcome of the battle would have been reversed if they were able to get a much better opening position.

    2/4. I thought stalker blink wouldn't help here because the zerglings would surround the stalkers thus eliminating the possibility of there being a safe spot to blink to, and I thought the psi storms would be more effective against the marines.

    - Lings vs Stalkers. I love the Lings but Blink is OP.
    + Zealots + Immortals vs Roaches. Immortals in the back will plow through roaches easily.
    + Adepts + Templars vs Marines. Storms end. Bullets don't.
    + Thors vs Liberators. Liberators would win in a choke point but the spreaded Thors will finish off the Liberators during the Re-zoning.

    As predicted, unless it's Ultralisks, range wins 9/10 times with sufficient mass vs melee. Ultras only get an exception because of just how tanky they are. Melee units are best used as meat shields or distractions for ranged support.
    Immos are the natural counter vs anything armor and they win against the majority of matchups. Zealots just make the difference bigger.
    With good storm placement, the Adepts and Templar would've won vs mass Marine, but the AI is typically not smart enough to understand that.
    Liberators may be scary, but the second they need to move to readjust their air-to-ground attacks is all the Thors need to win. There is a reason why mobility is prized over static defense in upper-tier StarCraft

      Yeah, setting up the zones is the fatal flaw with Liberators; yeah, they'll deal a ton of damage to anything in those zones, but since they can't fire BEFORE setting up the zone...

    You CPU indeed had enough.... True but not only that but the fact that SC2 engine isnt really made for unit spamming on such scale and the fact that the Engine is in fact outdated and not optimized again for such scale and alos that new game has up to 2 expansions stacked up together, HOTV and LOTV added to the base game making it even more heavy to handle. It could be a lot better if Blizzard could just change the engine but with all the content and dependency that the game is tied to the old engine and the effort it would need to migrate all that content to a new engine and the money it would also cost for such titanic job. Really nice video!
    And also the fact that SC2 is made for dual core CPUs

      Man, WoL is pretty much a campaign in which you see almost 1k units at the end of every mission. It is indeed prepared to that amount of units, it even works fine at "Real Scale" mod in which almost every unit except for battleships are double the amount. Sc2.is pretty well optimized for its time.

    How well can Immortals fare against the non-heavy Ravagers?

      Despite having 25 less HP, the fact they're unarmoured means they take a full 6 shots from immortals to kill with full attack/armour upgrades, unlike the roach's 3. Add onto that the ravager's increased range which is incredibly useful in this format and corrosive biles, and they'd honestly probably have taken that fight (though there would have to be 25% less ravagers to equal the mineral cost and the gas cost would triple).

    2/4 not bad but I hoped better
    Round 1 Guess: zergling will just swarm over
    Result: I haven’t used stalker so don’t blame me
    Commentary: Zerglings were distracted by stalkers teleport and that helps
    Round 2 guess: Roaches, that’s too little immortals to handle them plus immos are single target
    Result: NEVER UNDERESTIMATE 55% BONUSES!!!
    Commentary: those zealots were torn apart pretty quickly tho
    Round 3 guess: marine swarm!
    Result: finally guessed right
    Commentary: I thought the HT’s tornado would kill the marines in the middle of battle but they ran out of energy later on.
    Round 4: Thors, Liberators vs ground takes time to change target area plus thors had more resources invested into them
    Result: Liberator’s area change is exactly what killed them.
    Commentary: Liberators are the worst offensive units. Period.

    1. Zerglings are murder machines, don't think Stalkers have the DPS to win
    Result: Darn, just too many Stalkers
    2. Immortals should be able to shoot while the zealots fight, I think toss has it
    Result: Those zealots got melted but immortals clutched anyways
    3. Weight of numbers, I think the marines have it
    Result: Storms were kinda scuffed, but I guess it gave me the win lol
    4. Thors chew through armored flyers, gotta give it to em
    Result: closer than I imagined, but eventually lost on the reposition.

      Are you sure they have the ability to merge in this case? The only ones i know that can affect other units in a similar way is ascendants/alarak with supplicants, and galleons for unit production.

      That depends on how you define micro. All units auto cast abilities in this. Marines/marauders auto stim as soon as they're in range, immortal shields activate as soon as they take a hit, HT/Ghost still use their abilities, ravagers auto fire their bile on the closest target.
      The difference is that the stalkers auto blink away as soon as their shields are down, which in this format is incredibly powerful

    3/4 Stalkers had micro, easily defeating zerglings, The Zealots were incredibly useless but immortals destroy roaches easily, HT ran out of storms like idiots, and Thors ripped through liberators, while not standing in the big blue circles

      With 12 out of 150 remaining, i'd hardly call it "easy." But their micro was impressive no doubt. Un-microed Stalkers would have been steamrolled.

    Well just about every fight there would have gone different with even a tiny bit of micro for the zerg. Literally blinking blink stalkers but 200 Zerglings just sitting in the back or 40 wrapped around one stalker half the time, should have wrapped the Zerglings around so it wasn't 8 rows of goons shooting the first 4 Rowes of lings (when only the first Rowe can attack) and with a wrap around lings would have hit the blinked stalkers in the back pretty quickly. No wrap around for lings is missing the whole point/strategy for lings, would have been an easy win for lings even with worse value as goons are like roaches, generally a terrible early to mid game unit, decent for aa depending. Not to mention the zerg army values were consistently lower.
    Thor vs lib micro was pretty terrible after that first siege. In stead of backing up and re-setting up (or more accurately spreading lib zone to begin with) they flew into thor fire for 3-4 seconds without even firing so I'm assuming they didn't have range. And what mode were the thors in if your going to bunch up the libs?
    This person constantly used Protoss abilities/micro (blink, storm) but wouldn't micro or use abilities of terran or zerg. The rhines won anyway but were they combat shield OR stimmed? It would be one thing if they were a click fights but literally blinking the stalkers but no wrap around for lings, or having libs fight thors who have highest aa range without lib range upgrade or just giving the zerg all lower army values. Literally gave Protoss storm upgrade, and blink upgrade but didn't use stim/combat shield/lib range, or wrap around for lings. I wonder if the lings were even crack lings.

      they both stimmed and had combat shields on the marines, libs had the range upgrade, the thing is that this AI doesnt *actually* micro the units. It uses the abilities on the unit card to the best effect it can, and even then it bunched up the storms to high hell and missed a load of DPS. yes the lings were crack lings, he generally gives them every ability he can (which is in LOTV). Jesus you just fucking want an excuse to hate this guys dont you? Theres no abilitiy on the ability card for lings called "wrap around and stab them all" so the lings are going to A move. Have you not seen how literally every unit just A moves in? Its just the unit card abilities that are used, other than that, all AI.

Either way, these are not AI-controlled fights, or at least, the AI is just a-move with abilities on autocast, some of the abilities having the most basic targeting - for storm it is probably 3 or more units in an area. Do agree that if it is possible to improve the targeting to stagger fire, like how annihilators do, then it would have melted the marines.

    3/4. those storms were terrible... if they had an ai thing to avoid overlapping them too much, the HTs would have won easily.
