Used to live right near these roads and these tracks!! Sometimes a friend would try to "jump on the train", but with no success. I miss Niles in those days, and now that live has moved me elsewhere, I miss Niles period. Good ole city. Love this vid!!
Very nice production I was privileged to have lived just south of the state line on this line. I was the "block operator" at Palisades. I rode and filmed the line many times from the old NYC days. (Complete head end film Niles Jct to HF) As past president of the Northern Indiana Railway Society, I have a 60 minute program of the branch that I give to different RR organizations. Once we get back into presenting programs, you and those interested in the line will have to see a re-run of my program. Good job again
at 9:10 the loco is passing Niles Chemical Paint Company. When I worked there, we used to get boxcars full of paint pigment that was unloaded by hand, one bag at a time.
My dad worked that line until 1979 when they did away with that line. I would go to work with him and ride the engine as we came down 9th street. Thanks for the memories.
I grew up in the 900 block of Hickory St., and my best friend Tracy Wilson grew up on the 900 block of Maple St. We hopped on this train many times, much to the chagrin of the conductor. We also played at the United Dairy between Hickory St. and Maple St. right on 9th St. Got a scar on my right eyebrow from a rock that the exhaust fan rejected back at me, when I threw it at it. Good memories.
Sure is!!! Went from being one of my trials from my house very nearby to just walk thru some nature. It has been manicured more now, but there were still tracks there for a long time before they finally took them up. Great way for the trailer park there to go back and forth from Martins to Shell and just travel in general. Martins bought the back of their property for more employee parking, so a shortcut from Silverbrook and 3rd was then inaccessible . I'm glad they have beatified that "track" more. The old factory spot was still empty to my knowledge as of 2016, I really miss Niles. I'll move back when it's the right time. My childhood home isn't far where I am now.
Never once saw these tracks used. Actually lived very near them for a year or two, at 1017 Howard St in the late 80s, so this was cool to see. I miss those years...Was still a kid, so had no clue how awful the world could really be. Seeing all those old cars & that brown cabover truck was pure nostalgic bliss :)
I used to live in Niles off Bond St not far from where this line went into French Paper I remember taking my kid when he was little to watch em cross the river I was also on the fire dept we got a call one night where a locomotive was on a spur by Simplicity and a rail popped up and ruptured a fuel tank and I believe when this happened was about the time they stopped running this line

Rumor is the 9st rail never received City approval so they put it in on a Sunday when courts were closed. I removed the track now used for the bike path. Lots of stories. Removed the well house to the ice house. Great picture of the roundhouse is in the book Niles Remembered ll.
Always fun to watch. Thanks for sharing.

I do kind of recall that spur now.Not sure if they still took freight when this was shot early 90s.

How did you find a crew old enough to be qualified on this trackage?
This line is now a bike trail!

I like at 2:50 the camera man jumps when the train blows it’s horn.
The hazards of not using a tripod and filming in questionable locations.
