“You can’t simply restore it; and run it on the mainline, as the kids say” That was the single greatest line, I’ve heard in a TH-cam video in a very long time.
It’s an authentic sounding voice and audio but what gave it away before the speaker made the hints it was not historical was the gasps made right before speaking. If you have ever done professional recordings, you’ll realize that you cannot let your breathe be heard before speaking.
A dream that no one thought possible just like the Big Boy 4014. So proud 3001 was chosen to be returned to operation and being the sole NYC locomotive to operate in nearly 70 years. My hats off to everyone at the FWRHS 🎉
This is incredibly exciting. New York Central 4-8-2 Mohawk 3001 is going to be restored to operation! Railfans all over the country are going to be beyond excited for this!
MY JAW IS ON THE FLOOR WATCHING THIS! YES FINALLY A NEW YORK CENTRAL LOCOMOTIVE WILL RETURN TO THE MAINLINE Not a new build J3a Hudson unfortunately but I will still take it. I’ve grow up seeing the NYC 3001 since it was the museum I used to visit all the time as a kid and it’s so great to see the locomotive that I used to see as a child is getting restored. Fun fact: this is not the first time 3001 was going to be restored for excursion service. You see Conrail was developing a steam excursion program in the mid to late 80’s after seeing the success of the NS steam program, and the steam candidate was going to be New York Central 3001 which was to be restored to operational condition, but unfortunately several complations occurred that caused conrail to scrapped the program in 1987, so it looks like she is getting a second chance. Big congrats for the Fort Wayne historical society for making this come true As a die hard NYC fan myself all I can say is thank you For bringing this Mohawk back to steam again.
Me too. I love the New York Central and with PRR 1361 making her return soon it seems appropriate to have a survivor of their arch rival railroad make its return too. 3001 is truly a worthy candidate to be restored to steam. If NS allows steam back on their tracks for a reignited steam program alongside CSX since their tone towards steam locomotives has shifted (case in point NC&STL 576 and C&O 2716) they could host a group public excursions sponsored by the Fort Wayne Group, The National New York Central Railroad Museum, the New York Central Historical Society, and the Steam Institute owners of PM 1225 on former New York Central mainline trackage the NYC’s Water Level Route from Chicago to Elkhart, The Big Four Route between Indianapolis to Cincinnati on CSX’s trackage, the former NYC’s St.Louis mainline, and a couple other locations that was once served by the Central including the P&LE making the 3001 the first NYC L3a 4-8-2 to travel into Pittsburgh, PA and the first NYC steam locomotive to return to the city since the last steam locomotive for the P&LE made its final run.
I know it might be a pipe dream, but I would like to see 5550 pulling the NYC cars on a speed run. If they could find some level, straight, and maintained track from central Ohio, through Indiana to make that run, that would be even better. But, alas, lawyers and NS/CSX probably wouldn't allow it.
Whoever made this video did a great job combining vintage footage with new shots, and recreating the look and sound of an old newsreel or short feature.
Always wanted to see a NYC return to the rails, the Mohawks are right there behind the Hudson’s in terms of importance and historical significance, truly doing the central justice with this one, suck it perlman
Brilliant video! I have fond memories of an excursion trip pulled by the 765, shortly after it resumed operations. It was the beginning of a lifelong love of steam locomotion. I'm in!
We need 3001 to return to Cincinnati and stop at the old NYC Depot in Lockland. I know that sounds Childish but if this happens, Then my life will be complete.
I am super excited to here this news. I did not think any New York Central Railroad steam locomotives had survived the cutters torch. I know the President of the NYCRR at the time was unfortunately, super efficient at cutting up these historic locomotives. I know that I will donate to this awesomely exciting venture
Absolutely outstanding presentation! Using the classic narrator’s voice, music, and visuals is a stroke of genius! “‘One cannot simply just restore it and run it on the mainline’, as the kids say”, gold! Well done, I’ll be supporting you from Australia.
I am very excited to hear about the restoration of NYC Mohawk locomotive 3001, engine 3001 is one of a few surviving preserved New York Central rr steam locomotives and I personally would love to see a NYC steam engine be restored and brought back to life again.
This is one of the most exciting things I've seen in a LONG time. I'll have to donate anything I can! EDIT: I just donated $50! I hope to see this project through to the end!
It’s great to hear about the plans to restore this locomotive. I can’t wait to follow the progress and eventually come over to see the loco when it’s renovation is completed.
Well done video. The 1950s flavor is fantastic. Visited the museum a few years ago. I thought, while I was, there how great it would be to see that Mohawk run again! My father in law started on the NYC in "64 , and worked his 35+ year career running wrecking derricks and in car maintenance. NYC, Penn Central, Conrail, then retired from NS. Most of his career right there in Elkhart.
This is really cool. I have grown up seeing this locomotive in my home town. Really cool to see a piece of Elkhart and Central history come back to life!
Props to you guys at The Fort Wayne Railroad Technical & Historical Society for bringing my vision to return a New York Central steam locomotive to life!
Y'all. This was so f'ing well done . There must be some magical marketing/business genius at the helm. Kudos to the group on an excellent rollout and announcement. The time, dedication, thought and skill that went into this will serve the organization well in the future. We look forward to shamelessly foaming your progress.
It's like we're back 65 years and they're announcing an upcoming milestone, but in reality it's just now! I'm looking forward to the next and future progress updates on 3001. What an amazing project!
I have the Herron rail dvd collection that features the NYC 3001 as shown in this video and seeing her in action in 1950s, having to see her in person in Indiana, and now with it being restored I say that this is an achievement in steam locomotive restoration. Road To The Future!
Ok did not realize this was a FWRRHS video at first. The classic sounding recording was top notch. A NYC restoration project, never would have thought. It would be something to see the likes of these locomotives with the T1 project, 611, and 2100 etc.
I’m so excited! The NYC is my favorite railroad, and seeing the largest surviving steam engine from it restored to active duty will be a real treasure to see! Best of luck to everyone making the 3001’s return to service possible!
I don't know how you did this, but this video - and especially the narrator's voice and diction - captures the feel of those old NYC productuons of the 40s and 50s! Brilliant! Also ---- that you're planning to restore 3001 made me get emotional. My Dad was a machinist for the NYC at Dewitt, and often shared his experiences working on steam locomotives from 1940 to the end of steam power. He went on to work for the NYC, then to PC, until he retired in 1975. I wish he was still here to see your efforts! Thank you, on behalf of him and his legacy. ❤
I never really thought it would happen, and the Central’s steam was doomed to forever remain in the history books and on film. Switchers aren’t that useful for excursions, 999 will never be allowed to leave, the two ‘bigger’ engines marooned in Maine look like they’re forever trapped, and the two Mohawks always seemed too much of a project to undertake. Let’s all support the FWRHS however we can!
This was the best editing I have ever seen from a rail preservation group. The visuals, the narration, the soundtrack. Straight from the 1940s-1950s and really carries the vibe perfectly. My only questions (besides where's the Hudsons) is How can I donate a percentage of things like online purchases and when are the HO scale models coming out? PS Shoutout to History in the Dark and his "NYC hates steam" comedy sketches and I hope he runs a campaign to help you guys out
This is truly a historic moment as not only one of the last of NYC steam gets restored but gets to run on the route she ran on along side NYC passenger cars.
Love everything about this video! The voiceover, footage, and that one (hopefully famous) quote. 4014 is cool but this is 100x cooler! Good luck restoring this (And 624 whenever that'll happen)
With all the celebration, the best part is that potentially, the 765 will do a doubleheader with the 3001, the steam icons of Fort Wayne and Elkhart respectively. Thank you Fwrrhs for starting the resoration of mohawk 3001
this is awesome damning news. I never thought i see the day that there planning to restore the last NYC mohawk steam locomotive into operation for excursion trains. this really brighten up everyone's day today. :D
Agreed! And it’s quite an “imperial” looking locomotive, I say imperial meaning it’s a handsome steam locomotive, and iconic. It has the iconic cow catcher, boiler front, and front slotted just like the iconic Hudsons. She’s perfect to restore. I’ve never thought, ever, would be restored to operation and always thought that the museum and the officials of Elkhart wouldn’t let anyone close to it. But yet, here we are! Although, the 3001 is not the only New York Central Mohawk in existence, the 2933 is still around at the Railroad Museum in St. Louis.
I know that there are several steam locomotives restoration can become a big deal, but to hear one from the NYC? That’s got to be the biggest news I have ever heard since the UP Big Boy 4014’s restoration!
WE ARE SO BACK 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️ thank you so much FWRHS! When she returns I hope she comes back to New York in places like Syracuse, or Schenectady where she was built!!
This is awesome news! Will be interesting to see 765 and 3001 work together on the Indiana Rail Experience and travel to different venues at least in the Midwest. Maybe in the near future 3001 can make a visit to La Salle Street Station on Metra similar when 765 ran the Joliet Rocket.
This is just what I needed to hear right now. Finally, something good is happening. 765 is gonna have a shedmate to run with. Now I need an Alfred E's Rampage skit about this....

I should have done it years ago! Raaaggh!!” *Chainsaw noise intensifies.*
That's very cool, I grew up in Anderson Indiana on the Big 4 NYC line that goes North/South from Anderson to Elkhart yards and had my first ride on a SW7 NYC switcher!! I also lived in Elkhart for several years working at Blue Fin boats back in the 80s spending time at Elkhart yards and downtown Elkhart checking out the NYC equipment there!!!
New York Central 3001 will be the only New York Central steam locomotive to restore to operation in the world, and be part of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and this is the perfect home for NYC 3001, I'll be catching and filming this locomotive everywhere in person because I love steam.
Something tells me the merchandise will sell like crazy lol. We may be able to see the locomotive moved even before May 2025! My main concern is what going on with the hurricane victims and this nation. Our government hates us so much that is burying their credibility by denying help to the victims. Disgusting!
Im sad to see her leave Elkhart. Ive grown up with her there my whole life. I am very happy to know she is going to be running. I will watch her leave with tears of sadness but to see her running again will bring tears of joy. That whistle at the end is so nostalgic to me. I would spend hours in that museum and play with the 3001 interactive setup. my favorite part was the whistle button.
To say that I'm excited would be somewhat of a minor understatement...(runs around in circles)! ....and I'm Swede, that's a HUGE Milwaukee Road, living in Glasgow, Scotland! 😆😂
So excited to finally see a New York Central locomotive return to the rails! As iconic as the NYC is in American railroad history and culture, we need it! As for the train to go with it, I think it would be nice to add a Pacemaker box car (upgraded to express box car standards). Maybe it could be used as a tool car, but just as a nod to the Mohawk’s freight career.

That's very cool, I grew up in Anderson Indiana on the Big 4
NYC line that goes North/South from Anderson to Elkhart yards and had my first
ride on a SW7 NYC switcher!!
I also lived in Elkhart for several years working at Blue Fin boats back in the 80s spending time at Elkhart yards
and downtown Elkhart checking out the NYC equipment there!!!
New York Central 3001 will be the only New York Central steam locomotive to restore to operation in the world, and be part of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and this is the perfect home for NYC 3001, I'll be catching and filming this locomotive everywhere in person because I love steam.
This is by far one of the best hype-up videos ever posted. Will there be merchandise available for purchase that will help meet the fundraising goal?
@@northernohiorailfanningpro8899 There will be as we roll out! Stay tuned @ to americanloco.org.
Merchandise. will follow soon.
Something tells me the merchandise will sell like crazy lol. We may be able to see the locomotive moved even before May 2025!
My main concern is what going on with the hurricane victims and this nation. Our government hates us so much that is burying their credibility by denying help to the victims. Disgusting!
Thank you for restoring the NYC Mohawk.
Im sad to see her leave Elkhart. Ive grown up with her there my whole life. I am very happy to know she is going to be running. I will watch her leave with tears of sadness but to see her running again will bring tears of joy. That whistle at the end is so nostalgic to me. I would spend hours in that museum and play with the 3001 interactive setup. my favorite part was the whistle button.
the smile won't leave my face for a long time!!!
I don’t even know what to say. This is some of the biggest news in the railroad preservation world of the decade, maybe in the last two!
The New York Central shall roll again!
I am very excited to see a New York Central steam locomotive coming back to life. I hope for the best folks at Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.
Love the shot at 3:48, its awesome seeing Mohawks at speed!
I’m curious. Who did the voice work for this cause dang it’s really good.
To say that I'm excited would be somewhat of a minor understatement...(runs around in circles)!
....and I'm Swede, that's a HUGE Milwaukee Road, living in Glasgow, Scotland! 😆😂
I’ve been waiting for this day for half a decade!
holup, somethings happening with 3001?!! im all in I gotta see this
All that can truly be said is that she is in good hands!
Share this with anyone and everyone you know who likes trains we need this to happen
I hope I can live long enough to see videos of it
Living near 3001, I also hope I'll get to see 3001 running
I get the sense that 765 might be wearing a different whistle briefly…?
thank you fort wayne railroad historical sosiety its a GOOD news for everyone that your going to oporate ICONIC MOHWKS 3001 make it quike
Quite the charming announcement, I wish you all luck!
"we will watch your career with great interest."-Railfans
3001 being restored was NOT on my 2024 bingo card
Incredible news! Congrats to everyone involved. I have no doubt they will get it done.
This is awesome I've always loved the NYC it's so cool to see one get restored!!
Alfred E. Pearlman’s about to be proven so wrong. It may not be a Hudson or Niagara but this is the next best thing. Best of luck to you lot.
Close enough. Welcome back, New York Central.
I am so pumped up for this moment! "The Return of the NYC"
