  • How I vlog on long distance trails in 4 steps: Filming, Editing, Posting, and Storage. I had some difficulty finding information on how to do this stuff for iPhone, so I wanted to share what I learned and the general process I use for vlogging.
I’m hitting the AT starting in Georgia in late February. If you’d like to follow along with my daily vlogs when I’m on trail, please subscribe!

You’re welcome and thank you! I feel the same way about the GoPro. I wish I had something else but I’m going to make use of it the best I can until it needs to be replaced.

I love recording just with my phone and I have not been disappointed yet. But maybe it’s since I just started backpacking videos; like you said, that’s what you did at first too.
I love your breakdown of the plot in each video, especially noting the reintroduction of yourself and maybe some challenges you expect for the day. Great tips!!

Thank you! The introduction is important because most people who watch yours videos will be new to your channel. 🙂 I often forget and assume everyone already knows me! You’re pretty good at introducing yourself at the beginning of your videos though. Phone is just fine! Cameras are expensive and make the process more complicated.

Love your multitasking iPhone camera monopod mount! Necessity is the mother of all inventions. Now I know why all your videos are so well done with all that you do to make them Can't wait for your start! Take care and be safe!

Hi Jenny. Great tips. On my through hike last year, one young vlogger uploaded all of her photos and videos to Google. I think she also had a physical drive but I know for sure she store everything in two locations, not counting her iphone. If I could offer one suggestion; I'm following a number of through hikers this year who are on trail. What I have noticed is they don't really talk about actual distances. The caption may say starting and such and such shelter and finished at such and such, or decided to stealth camp. Having hiked the AT and having FAROUT, it's easy to determine the distance but I think most viewers would like to know "I walked 15 miles today" or whatever that number is. Many vloggers fail to show the terrain and difficulty of the trail and some days you just don't do big miles. Last, the vlogger had an iphone and gopro but I think for 95% of her videos, she used her iphone and just didn't bother with the gopro. Best of luck out there.

Thanks for the suggestions! I agree with you about saying the mileage - that’s something I like to know when watching other people’s vlogs, and also what mile or shelter they ended at. I usually do both those things in my vlogs. Will try to show difficulty / terrain as well. The bulk of my footage comes from my GoPro because I’m basically using it anytime I’m moving which is most of the time when I’m vlogging.

Great tips on how you save footage to a card. I’ve just been deleting videos from my phone. How much GB does one of those store?

They make all different sizes. I found the 512GB Sandisk one to be the most cost effective but they make even larger ones, they are just more expensive. You could just delete the files too. I just like to reuse footage and have backups so I wanted a way to save the individual files.

Thanks for the tips. I like the idea of how to attach your phone to your trekking pole.

How big a battery bank are you bringing to keep the devices topped up?
