    Which trail would you most like to see a vlog series from?

    This was very interesting. Hikers who vlog make it look so easy, but it obviously takes much thought and work. Personally I find thru hiking vlogs to be a priceless form of information as I am an older female solo hiker. I am hiking the AT one state at a time. Please know that you definitely help other hikers with your work and we really do appreciate it.

      Thank you 😊 I'm so glad that you're finding value in the videos and that they're helping your research. Vlogging took a lot of energy. I was constantly trying to film everything and get a good b-roll. It's hard to make an interesting-looking video and take most of the day off.

    Love the "mindset" advice regarding vlogging a thru hike, super 👌

      Thank you. There is no point adding pressure to upload a video at regular intervals, on top of all of the things that are already stressing us out on a hike.

    Hey man! How cool! Was searching for this topic and then just remembered that we met somewhere in Maine at one of the hostels near Baxter. Trail name Swagman

    Great video. Wonderful tips on how to film a thru-hike. I use a GoPro, so, probably have to do some things differently, my main concern is finding places to upload the videos. Nice channel. New follower here. Crow✌️

      Yeah, that's going to be a little different with the GoPro. I think that you can bluetooth the footage to your phone from the GoPro, and edit it in the GoPro app. Not sure though, might be worth checking. Glad to have you along 🙂

    I've seen some of your video's where you are using an external microphone. What are your thoughts and recommendations for microphones while vlogging on the AT?

    • @Adventure_Together
      @Adventure_Together  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say that it's not worth using an external mic on a thru-hike for a few reasons:
      • There isn't enough background noise that you need to amplify yourself above
      • You're not far enough away from your phone or camera (if you're holding it) to need it
      • The sound quality difference can be forgiven on an AT hike vlog
      • Rain, dirt, etc
      • Another thing to charge if it uses batteries
      • Using a lav mic will isolate your speech from people around you
      Essentially, the choice of whether to take one is up to you. I wouldn't though.
      If you are set on having one, the Rode VideoMicro is the one I use on my travel vlogs (not while hiking). I use a Bluetooth lav mic for my other videos.
      Happy hiking!

      What were your record settings? 1080p, 4k?
      What were your TH-cam upload settings?
      Thanks

    What did you do for storage? I am planning a thru hike of AT in March, and using my iPhone 14 Pro Max and I am concerned with holding videos for 4 weeks or so, filming daily, plus after editing and then saving that to the phone that there won’t be enough storage on my phone. I do have iCloud that I can upgrade to 1TB but that doesn’t solve the phone issue and, when I delete from my phone - it also deletes from the cloud. Looking for solutions to this issue now. Obviously I need to maintain the videos on my phone at least until I can edit them as you can edit offgrid. I can use an external flash drive to remove completed and uploaded videos but then that has its challenges.
    Appreciate any insight as to how you worked this out.

    • @Adventure_Together
      @Adventure_Together  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My phone has 1TB storage. I used that. Before I started, I deleted all but the apps I needed for the trail. I deleted all clutter to maximise memory. I got through the trail with all of the footage in 4K. I hope that works for you

      @@Adventure_Together thank you for the response. It helps at least to know that it’s possible, I’ve learned and thought of some other interesting ways around some problems I never would have considered even excited. 😂 I’ve been down some rabbit holes lately for sure. I can laugh at myself at least lol. Just a guy who thought he would go for a little stroll along a trail, gimme a backpack and make me some sandwiches - it’ll be fun. 😂.
      I really do appreciate it. You have helped me tremendously. Thank you.

    • @Adventure_Together
      @Adventure_Together  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I did the same. You really do go down some rabbit holes during your prep. That's why I made a lot of the videos after the AT. I was answering questions that I had going into it.
      Good luck on the AT.

      @@Adventure_Together you actually helped a lot. I went ahead and just bought a second phone. My iPhone 14 Pro Max was only 256gb and some people said they did it with that, but they also had to upload and delete weekly. I didn’t really want to grab another phone - would have rather went with a different camera like the go pro, insta 360 or DJI osmo pocket 3 but they also have their challenges. Power, accessories, editing offgrid, etc. I’m done with the rabbit holes man. Haha. I wanna keep it simple and like you mentioned, not ever ever feel like I have to do anything. That’s 100% not who I am today. Also, I’ve spent my share of $$$ (new phone $32 a month and no $$ outta pocket) with this decision as three weeks ago I didn’t even own a fleece (Florida guy) didn’t know the different between cotton or poly and I thought wool was from like biblical times. Haha. I just wanna do cool stuff. Not shop and analyze clothing, mah of power banks, charging blocks, and now cameras. Lol. Holy choices. I’m a winging it kinda guy.
      But thanks again because you answering the 1TB and your video of 3 weeks of uploads helped me turn that page. Now onto more important things like ticks and permethrin. Haha

    • @Adventure_Together
      @Adventure_Together  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sawyer Permethrin on backpack, tent, clothes.
      Sawyer Squeeze water filter
      3L CNOC bag for gathering water
      Nitecore or Anker power banks
      I'm glad that this video helped you. Remember, the gear you start with is never the gear you finish with. You'll pick things up along the way. It doesn't have to be perfect at the start. It just needs to be good enough to get you from A to B.

    What formats do people save, the original pre-edited version and/or the final version. Im trying to conserve space, if possible.

      For me, I upload the edited video to TH-cam, then delete the edited video. I save in hvec mp4.

    When it comes to people vlogging the AT, one thing I've wondered about for a while is whether or not they had to sacrifice something they wanted to bring, but decided against due to the camera batteries and cameras and triopods etc pushing their weight a bit heavier than they would like. Were there any items that you had hoped to bring with you but chose not to in order to keep your weight down? Thanks Al!

    • @Adventure_Together
      @Adventure_Together  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a good question. I imagine that most people crazy enough to carry a large camera 2200 miles just accept the extra weight. I don't even know what my base weight was when I started or finished. I just put everything I wanted in my bag and left for the trail.
      For me, I didn't sacrifice anything. I took everything I wanted to and found out I didn't need a lot of it while I was hiking. When I got to Hot Springs, NC after the Smokies, I sent home 9 lbs of winter gear and other things I didn't need to carry.
      My total pack weight with food, water, and the camera was almost 36 lbs when I started walking. Holy Roller's by comparison, was 25 lbs (food and water included).
      By summertime, we were accidentally ultralight. No matter how well you prepare, almost everyone gets out there and realises they could have left a couple of items at home.
