    I love Peter’s work and have followed him for years, but i can’t stand fanboys overhyping what is clearly a marketing stunt. I appreciate sincere reviews like this one. I’m sure the PM bag is good, but is nowhere near to perfect, specially with that price tag.

      If PM bag was cheaper, then I'd be just right, but like you said, it's really expensive considering what you don't get compared to competitors.

    Two different propositions: camerabag vs travel/camera hybrid. Also one zipper is almost waterproof, the other is not. Technically great video though.

  • @KRZYMANIAK
    @KRZYMANIAK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Worth mentioning that the Nomatic design places the entire load of the bag on the rear zipper compartment. The shoulder straps are attached directly to the back panel. Imagine if the zippers blew while on your back. All your gear would dump out. Lowe pro’s design is more safe.

    • @boristahmasian9604
      @boristahmasian9604 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are making an excellent point. The zippers do not even need to blow. There have been times that I have forgotten to zip the bag up all the way. With Lowepro, the gear will not fall out. With Nomadic, who knows.

    • @Sir-Kay

    I bought the Protactic 450 in part based on this video 3-years ago and I'm STILL using it. I use it daily and have brought it to 7 countries and it's carrying my 16" MBP, iPad Pro 12.9, DJI RSC2 Gimbal, Elgato Streamdeck, GoPro/Accessories and all kind of adapters and my DJI Air2S. I have it loaded out for photography or just hardcore work and I have been traveling 6-years in Se Asia. My point being, GREAT recommendation. I don't hear anyone talking about the Lowepro anymore but they should, it's still GREAT!

    Over the last few days, I have looked at numerous TH-cam videos that review camera bags. After all this, I had narrowed my potential choices to the LowePro 450 AW II and the Nomatic Peter McKinnon bag. Once I watched your video, my mind was made up. The Lowepro is a better choice for me. The price difference didn't scare me off, but when you illustrated the difference in the depth of the bags, that was the clincher. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video. It certainly helped me! Best wishes! Lou from Georgia.

    the nomatic backpack is basically a donation to peter mckinnon. my dad and I bought too many camera bags and they're all kinda riffing off each other so there's always an affordable version of whatever bag you're looking at. the mckinnon bag is obviously a designer bag cuz it has his name on it so yeah finding a 200$ bag similar or better isn't surprising.

    Nick, you sold my on the Lowepro. They should pay you for doing a great job explaining why this bag is so good. I am a Tenba guy with a bunch of other bags from other manufacturers. I am not too crazy about the new Tenba offerings, so this Lowepro is my next bag. The two external lens pouches will come in handy on my shoots.

  • @mercutio123100
    @mercutio123100 ปีที่แล้ว

    YES THE DEPTH OF THE BAG - I received mine a couple of days ago and immediately I realised that I couldn't put my A7IV with a battery grip on it standing up as well as not being able to fit my 24 - 70 standing end to end. I have the V1 of the Lowepro and this is something I guess I took for granted but is something of a deal breaker for me. I find it a bit strange that PM wouldn't have it deeper seeing as he's been using Canon cameras with grips on them for years which wouldn't fit? I also find the bags straps pretty uncomfortable so am sending it back. It's a shame because looking at the feature list and testing it out I'd say it's about 80 - 85% there to being right on the money

    I have a LowePro Slingshot that I’ve taken all over the world. The company’s outdoor/backpacking roots seem to filter down into high quality gear that I know will last, at a reasonable price. With the Nomatic, you’re paying for branding and gimmicky features. LowePro is hands down a better bag company, especially if you buy one from REI.

    Nice video! My two cents: two completely different bags - unfair to compare them really. There is a reason the PM bag is higher in price. Materials and versatility. It's a weekend bag for the travelling photographer, but if you're JUST wanting a camera bag then the PM is NOT what you should have ordered.

    • @sorayananji6801
      @sorayananji6801 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The PM bag is technically, but i'm not sure if it's practically, more versatile. Wouldn't travellers have a separate bag/case for clothing? Particularly with carry-on weight and size restrictions which are tighter if you travel through Europe. If you want a premium bag with bondable, thermoformed fabric, and YKK zippers for travel Shimoda's Explore V2, Wndrd's Prvke V2, and F-Stop's range are probably lighter and more versatile genreal travel companions.

  • @therealeffect
    @therealeffect 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have to disagree with some points here. The nomatic bag is clearly not designed to be a camera bag only. And many cameras nowadays have decently small lenses. I never had a problem with that obviously with my MFT setup. The waist strap comes off on the nomatic bag as well, and not to mention the other accessory you can buy for the nomatic bag which is the smaller bag for drones. Which I use constantly. So... I mean... Not that fair in my opinion. Just different experiences for different users.

    Just stumbled across this video as I was researching something else and I have both these bags - just wanted to chime in and say I absolutely agree with you. The Peter McKinnon nomatic bag was incredibly disappointing. And the point about the smaller ProTactic bag being able to carry more gear than the nomatic bag with the first immediate surprising problem I noticed when comparing them. Super misleading.
    Side note, I was finally able to stop using my Protactic a few months ago when my Shimoda Explore v2 was delivered. It's a friggin' incredible bag.

My only concern is that a didn't see a laptop pocket in the backpack. Another feature I saw in another backpack is that when u open it up it has another layer of protection so things won't fall out. Lastly are the backpacks weather proof? I find annoying to pull up a bag to cover the backpack when it should be weather proof already.

    I'd prefer a separate bag for my gadgets and my clothes. When traveling, you really wouldn't bring your clothing around with you, unless you're kinda camping around with it. Usually you'd just leave your clothing at the hotel/motel/boutique and then go out and about with your itineraries.

    The Lowepro 450 ist a huge camera bag with tons of space. Its made for carrying your camera gear, thats it. Not much comfort, but fully functional. I own the 450 (such as the 250 btw). The Nomatic is more than a simple camera bag. Its for travelling with your camera gear. Therefore its got some additional space, thats the very point. No chance to use a 450 for travelling without any additional bag or case. In my view, it doesnt make much sense to compare both bags, as they are made for different needs. However i agree when its comes to the price. Nice review though! Greetings :-)

    The thing is the pm bag is for travel and photography where as the Lowe pro is for camera stuff only and for a travel and photography bag the pm bag is amazing. And as you said you don’t need clothes on your shoots than the pm bag is just not made for you which doesn’t mean it’s a bad bag

      And he never said it was. All he kept harping on was, for that price, it wasn't even better than the bag which suited HIS NEEDS. The PMK x Nomatic bag suits the needs of many other people, many of them former owners of the Lowepro, so, horses for courses.

    I don't agree with this video. For starters, the bags are for different people/purposes. I own the lowepro but I'm not really happy with it, and somewhat thinking about the nomatic. I also feel like you didn't research the nomatic bag at all. But here are my problems with your video:
    1. Depth. This is the thing that holds me back from the nomatic since I use a battery grip, but you exchange the depth for the ability to pack clothes etc. If you compare the exterior and internal dimensions of the bags it's pretty obvious. The lowepro fits camera gear somewhat amazingly, but you cant pack clothes, water, food etc for shit.
    2. The comfort. I haven't tried the nomatic bag so I can't disagree with you here, but it feels like the nomatic should win bigger because of the smaller straps on top of your shoulder-straps. I have those on my f-stop tilopa and they are amazing.
    3. Accessibility. Again, different bags for different people. Since the nomatic bag have way more compartments it can be argued that that bag have an edge, depending on what you want to grab from your bag.
    4. The rain fly, not much to be said but you could have mentioned that you can buy it for the nomatic bag (it's not cheap tho). I also kinda dislike the placement of the rainfly on the lowepro because it keeps the bag from standing upright by its self.
    5. Storage space. Here is where I disliked your video the most. If you go to the nomatic website, one of the big things they write about the bag is "35L TO 42L EXPANSION". How that is "misleading" is beyond me. And every. single. video. about this bag shows that.
    6. Accessories. Again, not much to be said but you didn't even mentioned that you could buy some great stuff for the nomatic bag, and if you buy it all in the bundle the price isn't that crazy. (Also, remember that you don't have to buy ALL the accessories..)
    "And the nomatic bag gives you two straps that you don't even know where to put them" Dude.... Tripod? Attach things to the outside, in the lowepro-like-straps, on the outside, just like on the lowepro bag? Again, not much research went into your purchase.
    The things I dislike about my lowepro are how the inside curves, making it really annoying if you want to put something square in the corner in a tight space, and that I don't fit any stuff beyond my camera gear. If I'm lucky I can get a water bottle in it and a jacket. (If you put your water bottle on the outside, like the tripod, I'm pretty sure the rainfly won't close, so that's a trade off to be aware of.)
    If you (the viewer) want a bag that only fits your camera gear and you need the depth, go with the lowepro, but if you want to pack more stuff, go with the nomatic (or any other bag).
    And i probably need to say this, since it's the internet, I'm not a McKinnon fanboy. But this video was, for me, wrong, uneducated and misleading.

      Spot on, on every point. This guys smart though.. buy a PM bag don’t even use it or put any effort into researching it’s intended use ....do a video on said bag you’re put no effort into reviewing make a profit off the views on the video then probably sell said bag

    I had both too. Kept my Lowepro bp450. Much better bag and for half the price. I wanted to like the PM bag, and did, but decided I could get more for less without losing quality

    This is a good review but anyone watching this should keep in mind that the bags are made with two different purposes in mind. If all you want is a gear/camera bag then yes you are correct nomatic is not the bag for you but if you want to take gear with you while you travel maybe on a weekend trip or maybe a little longer then the nomatic has you covered two different purposes in my opinion just depends on what you are looking for personally

    Although I don't have an opinion on the bags, I will say that this entire review felt slightly biased. I don't know if it was just me, but it felt like he wanted the Lowepro to win.

    the material of the nomatic bag is water resistant. so no need for a rain cover. but decent bag for 195.

    The only thing that I don’t like for the nomadic is the depth. I love the ability to put some clothes in. If the lowepro can do that I’d be all for it! Also, guess what pete used before he designed his? Oh that’s right the lowepro.

      Any bag in the world can hold clothes LOL even a plastic shopping bag, you don't need to pay an extra $200 for that feature
