I’ve always been amazed by the amount of polish that Peak puts into their products. Little innovation like the folding dividers and the zippers that “just work well” keeps me coming back over and over. Amazing comparison Dunna! Thanks for a well thought out video with great talking points.
Totally! The everyday backpack v1 wasn't for me... I have the messenger bag but it honestly doesn't get used much anymore. But when I saw this I knew it would be a competitor for the PM bag (which I already had when I got the Peak). One thing I didn't mention that I appreciate is Peak Design's recycled materials and carbon neutrality (pretty sure they are anyway).
I can't find any channel that's not bias when it comes to Peter mcannan either there all his friends or the paid to say nice things about the bag.. very frustrating..it's great to see this video is not like that..
I agree with everything you say in this video, I've got the Peak Design with the medium cube as well. I especially like the zips, it's so nice to have no issues in opening the bag. Such a basic thing but you don't realize how much difference it makes until you put it to use. I use it as my main bag now and would recommend it to everyone.
I have the Nomatic McKinnon bag and as far as comfort it’s probably the most comfortable bag I’ve ever had. I took a street photography trip to nyc and spent the entire day with this bag on my back. I walked from Times Square to the 911 memorial abs across the Brooklyn bridge where my car was parked. That’s a lot of waking. I carried my camera in my hand obviously, street photography, but I did have lenses in the bag and also my “water” bottled was kept full the entire time and in its pocket on the bag. Also had a jacket in the bag. When I got to the car my legs were killing me, but my shoulders were surprisingly great. Love this bag. I would still get it over the Peak even though I love peak design stuff. Both awesome bags, can’t go wrong either way.
Nice comments, David. I recently acquired the Nomatic 35L Camera Pack and so far, it does not disaapoint. The entire bag seems well-made, and the straps are also quite comfortable, even without using the chest strap or waist strap. Very impressed with the myriad of pockets, and the expandable front compartment is a bonus too. It's the only bag I've used thus far that can easily acommodate a long 180-600 telephoto zoom.
Great video! I bought the Nomatic last year and returned it within 3 days. Even with all that space I still felt very restricted when trying to organize my gear. Also, as you mentioned, its too stiff and not at all comfortable (in my opinion). I ended up getting the Peak Design a few weeks later and have zero regrets in my decision. I have a few PD products, they are easily the most innovative brand out there.
How do you feel about the strap comfort and the weight of the bag itself. Some folks on Reddit were saying that the straps were not very comfortable and the bag itself is quite heavy.
My favorite thing so far is the fact that they actually look field tested bravo! something satisfying about them being reviewed and not looking like you just unboxed them enjoying this so far!
Oh yeah... I've actually been using both of these for a while now. I've had the PM longer so it's got a bit more wear but it's holding up like a champ. I tried to clean it up a bit better for b-roll haha.
@LUITE I think maybe you misunderstood. What @JaimeGFX means is that it’s obvious that I’ve actually used the bags and tested them out properly before I gave my opinions and did this review... thus making the review more valuable to them.
@@dunnadidit its a gaming joke. when you get items in counter strike they have a quality rating like factory new, battle tested, battle worn etc... factory new always sells at a higher price lol little bit of gamer nerd humor because i used the phrase "field tested". But you are correct i personally appreciated the review 100x more because it looks like you genuinely reviewed them first hand.
FYI, I bought the Peak Design Travel bag on your recommendation. Got the medium cube too. I had been considering Peter's bag for about a year but the price always turned me off... your review was super thorough and it helped me a lot. Thanks!
We got 2x PD 45L and bought multiple cubes. We just load up the cube that contains the gear for the job. We have a video cube, a photography cube, a live stream cube, lens only cube, even a support cube (for all the effects, lens filters, tools etc) We can mix and match and load it to the PD 45L bag. Plus storage and organization is easy cause the gear are already in the cubes. For the Nomatic PM bag, you got to take all your stuff out and load it every time you need a certain config.
Yeah... not that I've been using backpacks a lot lately since I'm stuck at home but my wandrd is looking kinda sad lately cause the PD is even a pretty awesome daily carry.
I own the Peter McKinnon backpack and have now resigned it to a luggage/clothing bag when I travel and use my Lowepro 450 AW as my main everyday camera bag or I use my Neewer 2 in 1 Roller Camera Backpack. I found certain advantages (very few) with the Peter McKinnon backpack... (1) the accessories....The extra accessories like the backpack with the camera compartment in the bottom for day trips is great to some degree, BUT the one issue I found with it along with the main camera backpack.... NEITHER fits my Nikon Z6 or Z7 properly!!! I had a hell of a time fitting my Nikon Z series cameras in them and I got the impression that Peter had them designed with those who use Canon and Sony Mirrorless cameras and negelected us Nikon users. (2) I LOVE the battery and memory card holders!! They are fantastic and have became a part of my everyday carry kit when out shooting along with the lens filter holder. But the one HUGE disadvantage is THEY COST EXTRA!!! With the accessories including the camera cube/backpack, accessory case, etc... it brought my purchase to over $1100.00 Next I really like Peak Design and their bags along with my Lowepro backpack as on the straps I can attach the Peak Design Camera Clip!!! On the Peter McKinnon bag, it was neglected for those of us who own them and the straps are just way too large and bulky to attach the camera clip. I literally had to cut the threads on one of the really thin exterior fabric straps on the outside of the main straps to attach my camera clip and even then it kept sliding up and down. Next disadvantage of the Peter McKinnon backpack was that side entrance kept getting caught on the Velcro from the separators on the inside. I had a hell of a time getting side access to my gear and my camera with it. Next thing I didn't like is Nomatic's return policy....wanted to return the bag after a few days of owning it and they expect the bag etc... to still have ALL the tags etc.... attached and all original packaging.... I had cut them off and disposed of the packaging so I was unable to return it. So I have resigned it to being a bag I use for carrying lighting gear like my Neewer LED/RGB light panels and Neewer studio strobes when doing shoots, plus I use it for JUST clothing when I travel. But I have to agree....Peak Design for the win!! I now regret not looking at their travel backpack and camera cube etc... But overall I love both my Neewer 2 in 1 roller backpack and Lowepro 450 AW. But in the end as far as your review goes....If I could go back and reconsider my purchase....I would pick the Peak Design over the Nomatic/Peter McKinnon bag.
Peak design all the way! I have one bag from each line. I also love the Shimoda X50. But as I'm more a digital nomad than an adventurer, my peak design goes with me on almost all my trips. Thanks for the video.
I'm still swearing by that lowenpro 400. Did a whole tour in that one bag without dropping a whole 401k on. Also PRO TIP bought some military like... molle bags and just kitted out way more storage on it too. dope vid borttttherrrr.
Great comparison. I've owned both these bags, and personally prefer the Peter McKinnon x Nomatic … and it’s honestly not even close. I'll share why, but keep in mind this is TOTALLY for my use case, and I'm not at all suggesting that my opinion would be right for everyone! In my experience, the bottom line is, if you’re traveling with a bunch of camera/tech gear (maybe a few lenses, lighting, audio, etc.), the PM x Nomatic really shines in a way nothing else on the market does. I’d also say, the heavier your load is, the better the PM x Nomatic gets. With a lighter load, it’s probably too bulky and rigid to make sense. This isn't intended to nitpick your review, because comparing base models seems totally fair -- but a huge benefit of the PM x Nomatic backpack is the accessories. The battery, memory card and filter holders fit perfectly into those mesh pouches, then the smaller camera cube/backpack is actually surprisingly useful, and the accessories box, somewhat surprisingly, is my favorite thing. I have it and the Peak Design Tech Pouch, and they both take up basically the same amount of space -- I usually travel with them both inside the PM x Nomatic backpack. What I desperately want some backpack manufacturer to make is basically the PM x Nomatic back, with the Aer Tech Pack 2 front organization - or even the Pakt backpack organization, or Tom Bihn Synapse/Synik organization, or whatever - so that you can legitimately organize your stuff, instead of this sort of ridiculous idea that you’re going to cram your clothes, jackets, toiletries, extra shoes, etc. into that tiny clothes space that Peak and Nomatic insist on including in these travel backpacks. It turns both backpacks’ front organization into something that’s needlessly frustrating. I’d just prefer to take a suitcase with my clothes, and then put the backpack on top of it with the luggage pass-through so I can roll it all through the airport together with nothing on my back. It’s much easier than one-bag travel. But hey, I know my opinion on one-bag travel is far from universal! Just sharing my experiences.
Thanks for sharing! I 100% agree about the nomatic accessories... well, the battery bag, and card holder and the camera cube/bag. I don’t really like that little hard tech case much but that’s okay 🤷🏻♂️. On the flip side of that. The peak design tech pouch is my favorite tech pouch I’ve ever used by far. I have definitely done some heavy hauling with the PM bag and that’s where I ran into wishing it wasn’t quite so stiff. Whereas when I load up the peak, it just feels better for me but maybe that’s a size/shape (of me) thing. This is why I tried to make it clear in the review how subjective some of this stuff is so thanks for sharing!
On the PD zippers you missed the fact that some of the pulls have a button that lets you tie them into some of the loops to help them stay shut. They can still open enough that you might lose some change or even keys maybe but it helps keep them in place. Especially if you don't open the side access from the bottom.
One of the features I like most about the Peak Design is being able to tuck away all of the shoulder and waist straps, and slide it right onto your carry on handle. Makes it easy to get everything through an airport, and stowed onto an airplane.
Best review on TH-cam for both these bags. I wish I would have come across this one way sooner. Peak design all the way. But not hating on Peter’s either.
When I started watching this I was so concerned it was going to be a video gushing about Pete, so glad you have the integrity to do a good honest review. I was happy to. be proven wrong.
Thank you for this! I've been in shopping hell as can't go into a store to really try them on and play around with all the options. This was the next best thing. I will get my Peak Design as it checked all of my boxes and hope it works out for my needs. Great review process.
I really appreciate the honest review based on the bags and not on the people who made them. I have the PM bag and it has the features I need and the ones it doesn’t have (while they are cool to have) I don’t feel like I’m missing out on them. Except for the zippers.
This is exactly it! For the most part, no one is going to buy either of these bags and be disappointed. They’re both great and all the little extras are just that... extras!
I got both of them.. I ended up using the Peak Design one for personnal travel and the PM one for work. Because on the PM one I can put way more stuff as camera equipement than with the PD. I got all size of camera cubes and even the large one can't get enought stuff in it. Also in the PM bag I can put my DJI RS2 in the front pocket where i put some comfy stuffs inside the big internal pocket to protect him and all my other stuff inside the main compartment. Like that I can just go with everything i need with just one bag.
I could totally see how you came to your decision and honestly can't argue against it too much. Having the PM bag and I love it, you definitely pointed out a couple of things on the PD that I wish the Nomatic had. Primarily the straps on the back and how they can hide away and how it has 2 side pockets with still full access. Great job laying it all out there.
Great review video. As a big PD owner and an owner of the 45L, Im a huge fan of it. For me, point system went as follows PD:15, Tier 1, Nomatic 1. Overall, solid review man - love it.
Never thought i would say this, but my favorite travel and backpack for photography is actually not a backpack at all but works fantastic as one. The Peak Design Travel Dufflepack 65. You should really try it. After over a decade traveling and shooting we just clicked and are now best buds :)
Great video! Six years ago I moved several hours away from my office and began commuting to my office by plane 1-2x per month. Early on I purchased a Nomatic backpack that had just come out, based on positive reviews. I still use that backpack today and it continues to amaze me how well it works and how it still looks like new. Their products are amazing!!!
That was a huge dilemma for me which of these two bad boys to buy more than a year ago. Even though I have a lto of accesories from PD I decided to go with PM x Nomatic. Sure it's big and hefty, changing the customization inside takes me about two hours everytime, because all these velcrows are just catching everywhere. And hiking with it it's nightmare for my shoulders. But what sold me over was the little inception transformer cube/backpack, that was just so genius. And it aligns with how I think traveling should be: You get to your base camp and then mostly you don't need all your stuff for some smaller trips, just some, and for that purpose the Cubepack it's so efficient... Then I bought a big telephoto lens which I can technically fit inside but my camera body and second lens has to be in the compartment area and that's not ideal especially if you have your bottle inside as well. Basically now I've got too much stuff for the Cubepack but too little for the actual big bag. And I'm quite sure that I'm not using it properly bcs hiking? Probably better options out there. But as a travel bag or for medium to longer trips I can see myself loving this.
Thanks for sharing Marek. I totally feel you on that “too much, too little” thing. It’s darn near impossible to find a bag that fits for everything. The PM bag plus the smaller bag is a great idea or tossing a wandrd veer packable bag into any bigger bag but then you run into the issue that you have 🤦🏻♂️ Maybe some day we’ll have the answer
I love my Nomatic bag, I have just the backpack, no bells or whistles, and I have some tips for you if I may. 1. The waist straps can fold on themselves and go into the middle of the back. Thats how i wear my bag most of the time and when i need the strap, I dont even have to take it off to find them ;) 2. The McKinnon zipper ends go into loops that you can then secure with a small lock. I wanted to install one on the inside part of the side access to the camera, so no one can open it, and when i went to check where i should put it, THERE IT WAS ALREADY. Thoughtful.
These are fantastic tips! Thanks for sharing! I hear you on the sweating thing too. I took this bag hiking in the summer and I GOT CRAZY SWEATY haha. I had some trouble with the capture clip on it because the straps are so thick but I did get it on there eventually. But yeah, thanks for sharing!!
@@dunnadidit yeah, it took some squishing buy it's on there now! Something I forgot to ask. Which of these bags you think would be more inconspicuous? I think that having a 400dollar camera bag on your shoulders puts a pretty huge red crosshairs on your back. And I think that the Nomatic is a bit attention drawing for potential muggers etc.
Yeah I mean, if I HAD to pick one, I think the more rough fabric of the peak looks a bit less fancy so maybe that one, but honestly, they’re both pretty conspicuous lol
Both bags are nice, wished I’d seen this comparison video a few months ago, as I was really on the fence w/ PD after the Everyday 30L just didn’t cut it for my system gear and It should. In my opinion after years of all their great stuff, this was the low point of all their products.. That said, I went with the Travel backpack for all the awesome features so well thought thru! I haven’t ever regretted it and it does literally everything I wanted and more, and more into the $$$-hole of accessories, all awesome...! That modularity for future growth and changes in MY setup is what PD is all about and nobody comes close to their future-thinking design with the user in mind. You are right, the PD is the superior pack, and I’m a tough customer with multiple and often excessive needs for my work. Ohhh, and one last thing, the “POOP”-colored interior of the McKinnon bag is a deal breaker even if it were the better bag, which it isn’t...
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!! And as far as the PM interior... I wonder if you shouldn’t take a look at your diet if there’s that much orange in your... y’know, I’m not a doctor, I shouldn’t give health advice 😜
I have to say that my Lowepro 450 AW II serves me well, even tho I wanted to ''upgrade'' from it. I think none of those two are really a upgrade. But the review was just perfect! Everything mentioned that is important! Good job
Absolutely awesome video man!! I am a fan of Peak Design for various products but damn this comparison is crazy good!! I know their Travel backpack is awesome, this made it even more apparent how good it is!
PD user and was wanting to upgrade my 25L to their 45 and was looking at the PM bag but no way in hell could I justify paying almost twice as much. Awesome none-biased review Dunna 👏🏼
Wow thank you for being honest about this review, I was expecting for the Peter McKinnon Bag to win since I know he’s part of the photography community on youtube.
It’s a solid bag for sure but I just tried to be thorough and honest 🤷🏻♂️ Pete’s a solid guy and I’m sure if he watches the video he’ll understand the points I made (and hopefully put them into v2 haha)
The biggest plus and selling point for me to select the PD bag is the packing/camera cubes. Every bag I've had works, but you have to pull out the dividers to use the bag for general (non-photography) travel. Then when you want to use the bag for photo gear again, you have to re-install and setup those dividers all over from scratch. A huge pain. With the PD system, I can simply put in or take out the cubes I want (camera and/or packing) and never have to touch the organization of the dividers inside the camera cubes. I can even put the cubes in other bags (like the PD 35L duffle I also have). Makes for very quick and easy travel reconfiguration. I love the system so much, I just picked up their 65L travel duffle on black Friday sale to use for a checked bag... not that I'd put camera cubes in checked luggage, rather packing cubes.
LOVE my Peak Design Travel Backpack. It's my everyday backpack, my travel backpack, and my everything in between backpack. It transforms and morphs for every scenario. Also, love the company behind it.
I used Peter’s backpack for a few years, since the preorder stage, but the handles on the main zippers broke because it was too hard to open the main compartment and I can barely you use it at this point. So, a year ago I got the Peak Design everyday backpack 20l, but now I find it a little too small for big shootings and I just ordered the Peak Design travel backpack 45l shown in this video and I can’t wait to use it! 😁
It's interesting how different your perspective is than mine. Maybe I'm a bit biased as I own the Nomatic bag, but I'm happy that it's not like the PD bag in most of the categories you mentioned. For example, my biggest concern with my bag is the safety of my equipment. So having a lot of additional access to the camera compartment, zippers that would slide really easily if they were to get caught on something, etc., are not plusses for me. I would also never carry the bag on its side or upside down for the same reason. And likewise, I also appreciate the rigidity of the Nomatic bag's outer shell and dividers - the PD bag appears softer and more pliable in every way, and I would be concerned that if say, the bag is bumped by a door, it's more likely the energy from that bump will transfer straight to a camera or lens. I also normally am carrying two cameras. Maybe with the large or medium+large cubes they would fit in the PD bag as well, but it seems like there is more room in the Nomatic bag regardless. The laptop pocket on the Nomatic bag is just large enough to fit my 17" Blade Pro. The side pocket I don't use, so having a 2nd one wouldn't really be of any use to me - I keep my mini tripod inside the bag where I don't have to worry about it falling out.
Thanks so much for sharing your perspective! I’m absolutely stoked that you love your bag and this is what’s great about all the different gear options we have! There’s something out there for everyone and their specific needs!
Hey Dunna, did you get a chance to test how weather resistant they are? I'm based in Scotland so there's a high probability of heavy rainfall year round, I tend to take my jacket off to protect my not so waterproof bag but I end up getting absolutely soaked in the process so i'd be easily sold on either of these backpacks if they were waterproof machines!
Just get a 40L rain cover. It has elastics that go around your bag and keeps it 100% rain proof. Access to the bag is limited because there is a cover ontop but with the elastic around the edge of the cover. Its easy to remove and put back on in seconds! No need to worry about any bag in the rain
Thank you for this video. Seriously. So tired of every blogger raving about how great every product that they get free is. They don't even make minor critiques. Everything is the best version ever of whatever it is. Your review didn't rip the Nomadic bag apart, but is the only review I've seen that didn't just talk about how amazing the bag is. Subscribing now.
Yeah, I had to go with a tie on that category because they're both great in their own regard. It was one of the reasons I wanted to separate that category from the dividers too.
As others have stated I have to give you credit for delivering a good and ultimately unbiased bag comparison. I like the versatility options of the Peak Design myself. Regardless thank you for delivering a high quality comparison.
Got my Peak Design in October last year and it's been great so far. Having dual water bottle pockets is fantastic, and they fit my Manfrotto tripod, though it kinda makes me wish I had Peak's Travel Tripod (but sheesh $600 is a lot for it). I do admit that aesthetically I pretty much prefer Pete's bag, BUT, that is only because I look like a Ninja Turtle with Peak Design's bag on my back. Not even kidding, I transform into Donatello with it on.
Really good comparison video! I bought the PD bag during the Kickstarter and agree with most of your observations. And there seems to be a lot to recommend in the PM bag as well. Sort of a personal preference thing. I actually use my bag more as an airline carry-on, or a weekend get away bag than for camera gear. I do have the small camera cube. I also have a PD 10 liter sling and the original Everyday Messenger, as well as several straps.
A few things I think you missed with this review On the Peter bag those adjustment straps at the top of the shoulder straps are called load shifting adjusters... when you have the waist strap done up you can transfer the weight of the bag to your waist and off your shoulders by loosening them this also gives massive airflow behind your back. the Peter bag also has a frame/ chassis built into it the peak design does not have this Also iv ask a few peoples about the Peter bag and they’ve said it took some time for the straps to wear in before they become comfortable. Other people have commented that the peak design bag straps dig in when fully loaded because of the thinness of them So how long did you use each bag before this review???????? I love peak design but those straps + no chassis or load shifter is a massive fail on their behalf also bad air ventilation on the back is also an oversight some pretty big oversights for a very innovative company to make on a bag made for carrying heavy camera gear I’ll have to wait for both companies to release a v2 of these before I lay my money down
Thanks for your input! I did mention the load shifting straps but that’s interesting to know the specific way they were intended. Also, I timhing that the frame/ chassis might actually be the reason I found the PM bag less comfortable. Like I mentioned, it felt stiff whereas the peak could mold to a more comfortable shape. I haven’t had the “cutting in” problem with the peak design one and I’ve definitely loaded it right up with gear. And I thought the same about the PM straps but I wore it quite a bit and they haven’t really changed much. I’ve owned the PM bag for about 7 months and the PD for about 3. If I had to guess, I’d say they’ve both gotten pretty equal use. I put the PM through one really big hike and a trip and I’ve been wearing the PD bag for several hikes and a lot of daily stuff (since I can’t travel right now I tried to kind of simulate that scenario instead). Neither bag is absolutely perfect, but I am quite happy with both. And I’m definitely excited to see what either of them will do with the next version.
Some of these comparisons seemed like they were going to be a point for Nomatic but then all of a sudden were for Peak lol. I used the Peak Design bag for a long while and have recently tried out the Nomatic one. Nomatic one just feels more like a sturdy protection bag with simply less stuff. This sounds like a down side but in the PD bag, for all of the additional pockets and such...I didn't find myself using them. I guess it's good that they're there but the Nomatic bag has everything I need and more robust/premium materials. Not sure the cost is worth it so I may end up returning it but I rate these a lot closer than this. The other thing not mentioned about the Peak that is relevant to me at least, is that to get a fully customizable bag for a variety of gear and other items, you need at least a couple of the different cubes. Which if you need to buy any two of them you're then at a higher price point than the Mckinnon bag which just has the dividers that you can make do whatever you need. I have the medium cube for PD and found that I would love to get the small and/or large but then it's extra money into a system. Which I guess if you're all in on PD stuff then it isn't an issue.
Awesome! The Nomadic bag looks sooo cool and I have the Peak and love it but it was great to see specifically how the details differ and to reinforce how great the Peak is. I’m reinstating it as my every day carry, this made me realize how much I miss it and love it haha! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🥂
Just for the zippers alone I would go with Peak Design. It always is the first thing that fails in my bags. People at Peak Design really know their craft.
Great video!!! I have been looking at getting a travel bag for my planned trips after COVID and for my wedding shoots. These were the two I have been bouncing back and forth between these two so it was nice to see a review between them. I have the PD 30L everyday and love it so I was a little partial to the PD Travel bag lol.
With the PD large camera cube, there is enough space on the top for the Field pouch which I use for extra batteries, SD cards, shutter remote, and a backup hex wrench. No where near as much space as the Tech pouch though.
Thanks for the comprehensive and quite interesting comparison between these two awesome camera backpacks! I actually went with the Nomatic 35L for mainly one reason...my local store had one, and it seemed to accommodate my NIkkor 180-600 just fine, with room to spare for 4 other lenses, 2 mirrorless bodies, plus myriad accessories. Regarding Peak Design, though I do have a few of their products (wrist straps, shoulder strap and anchors), I tend to like backpacks with a bit more "structure", which also permits them to stand vertically on their own quite well, i.e., the Nomatic. Also, I recall you mentioning the third small handle on the back of the Nomatic possibly being used to "hang" the bag. I also think the main purpose of it is for easy opening of the main compartment flap when lying down on its front, but I could be wrong. At least I find that to be the case with mine. Thanks again sir!
Osprey Farview has entered the chat :) I have the Nomatic for when my purpose is photography and I am heavy on gear. If I need a travel backpack that I can use with a cube while also loading up with items, I would probably take Nomatic cube bag with Osprey Farview 40 bag. Back support is unmatched. Photo/travel hybrid bag vs Travel/adventure hybrid bag, the adventure bag will win on comfort and ability to walk with load. I think PD is a cool bag too, I just happened to find Nomatic first.
Just finished my first trip with the peak, thanks so much for the review! It’s amazing, the tuck away straps are next level. The whole thing just made sense. Having good handles on every side came in handy when I was grabbing it out of the over head. I had a Sony A7RIV, tamron 17-28 and 28-70, ronin rsc2 in the medium cube. Then a peak tech pouch with batteries and cables along with hats accessories in the big area with extra room. Extra pair of pants plus shirts, socks and underwear for three days. I’ll probably get the small cube next and ditch the ronin, probably have room for a week of clothes then.
I just bought the PD everyday backpack v2, which is a great upgrade from the v1. Thinking about picking this up as well so I'm covered for everything, nice review man!
Thats the same setup I have except I'm sticking with the V1 everyday just cuz it hasn't broken on me yet after 2 years and I like the design of the V1 better but as long as you have these two, you're set for life.
I’m in the market for a new bag this video made my decision, I’m ordering the PD. Thank you for such a well thought out comparison for everyday uses. Well done!
If you compare the 30L peak design against the 25L Nomatic it tips way more in favor of Peak Design. The 30L starts at $230 and the 25L Nomatic at $300 both without camera cubes or dividers.
@@ryanweeks287 I have that one, too. It's not bad but there's a few things I'd change. Like no expandable pocket on one side, and it rides a little high on my torso for some reason.
I have no in person experience with either bag. However, looking at them on video on in pictures the Peter McKinnon bag looks much more premium. However, the reviewer makes the Peak Design bag seem much more practical. I would love to try these both myself. As much as I think the Peter Mckinnon bag looks much better, if the review is accurate and the Peak Design bag is durable, I would pick the functionality of the Peak Design.
I'm not in the market for a travel bag now (yet I watched the whole review 🤔), but I am pretty invested in the Peak Design ecosystem. I have the 30L Everyday Backpack as my daily carry and LOVE IT! I can only imagine that the travel backpack would be the same. I agree... the zippers are BUTTER! Great review as always!
Haha I am the same, always watching reviews of stuff I don’t need lol. That’s great that you’re into the peak stuff, it’s really a fantastic company. I love their sustainable stance too. Fully carbon neutral as far as I’m aware!
I have both of them and totally agree with your score and findings. But since I have the Nomatic PM backpack the PK Travel Bag is siting at the floor and has not been used ever since.
I'm a type 1 diabetic and travel with a service dog as well. So a travel sized bag is my everyday bag. I've owned the PeakDesign since the Kickstarter. Can't recommend higher.
I am obsessed with having way too much camera gear on me at all times so I like a travel bag as a daily too. The PM was a bit too big to be my every day but I like that the PD gets just that little bit smaller if I want.
You should do a new video comparing the V2s for both of these… I believe both companies have released newer versions that have adjusted alot of those critiques !
Both companies released similar smaller versions. But they are actually both quite different bags. I have the PM everyday bag. But the PD smaller one actually doesn’t fit any of their camera cubes to my knowledge so I didn’t think it made sense on my channel. But hopefully I can do something about the PM one soon!
@@dunnadidit that’s awesome and great news thanks so much! I ordered both to see what fits out style. You video, albeit a year old at this point, still amazing key points and will definitely help seal the deal. Love the content keep it up!
Cracking review!!!. Just like a girl's handbag.....I think these camera bags are very much a personal preference. I wish I could afford either - I actually can just my wife will yell at me for spending more money on camera gear. I think you were a little unfair on the @PeterMcKinnon bag - but you are judging these bags for your own use - again, I wish I had one of these. From a security perspective, I like the smaller side access and the interior of the McKinnon bag. I guess any1 could make either work for them. Love the highly thought-out design of both. Again, Great review!!
Having used the Pm nomatic pack..i totally agree with all your points - i tried using it as my one bag travel but..there were a lot of flaws for my personal needs. the zippers were pretty annoying, i kept thinking i needed to break it in..but alas no luck no budge. Overall still my one bag for transporting a lot of gear (but not having to wear the backpack for a long period time) Merely as a transport bag
I've had the PM bag for about three years. Still love it, but you definitely touched on my one little gripe about it. I wish it had another half-inch of depth. That would've made it perfect, in my opinion. But I use it all the time when I travel and it's a great companion. Loved the video!
Excellent video it speak truth. You cover all the point that some users have notice and more I definitely belive that Peter bag was going to be the winner but as you mention the small details that Peak Design have are those that help and make you like the bag more and more, esthetically Peter nag is stunning but it also comes to usability on that category. Great job on the review it has all cover and more. Now lets see if they come with a second version of both bags and how they perform, because there was a little teaser from Peter side and we have to wait to see it.
@@dunnadidit ha! That's the real question isn't it? The gear bag is usually just gear for me, coffee supplies find their way into my roller carry-on with my clothes.
LOL, Peter's gonna be mad at you. Just kidding, that was a great comparison. I have Peter's Bag with all the accessories and I love it. I have zero regrets with the purchase. The PD does look brilliant though. Thanks for the awesome comparison!
I have the 30L PD and love it, but it doesn’t work as a travel bag! Been looking at both of these guys. Thanks for the great head to head! Clears it up for me👍
Finally! A very worthy competitor to the Pete McKinnon bag. Still, I wonder if I'd like the Pakt travel bag (and add a camera cube) better than both of these? Different materials, yeah. Not really a camera-specific travel bag, yeah. But I'm a bigger fan of bags opening like luggage. Thoughts?
Awesome review man! TBH I love my Nomatic bag but the wheight is just too much! The waist strap was definitely a must while hiking through Austria last year 😜
When you get right down to it, a backpack is for putting on your back and walking around. What it fits/protects, and how it carries are pretty much the only truly important concerns. Both of the packs you've reviewed today look somewhat overdesigned on the feature side. I mean magnets, and hidden flaps--really!? It's well known that complexity brings with it more points of potential failure, and for a working bag, more places for dirt, grit, and all manner of grunge to collect and hide over time. I wouldn't buy either of these bags for those reasons alone. I got sucked into a Peak Design Everyday Pack a number of years ago, and I hated it so bad that I gave it away for free (buying that was an expensive mistake!). I currently use a Shimoda Bag for my bulky gear, and an old LowePro bag for my lighter gear. As comfortable, and well designed as the Shimoda is for longer hikes, I tend to pick up the simpler, lighter, and very much cheaper LowePro on a day to day basis. Go figure. When it comes to shoulder type bags, I've owned a good number with all manner of goofy pockets, flaps, and nifty design features, but by far my favourite bag turned out to be the simplest, an old Tamrack Velocity 5X. It is so simple and effective in use that I have literally worn holes through it, and unlike many of the other bags I've tried on the quest for comfort and utility, I still own, and use, the Tamrack. If there is one photographic equipment category, besides tripods/heads that really irks me, its bags, whether backpack, shoulder, or sling, finding the one that works is just such a pain; and on the way, a huge money sucking pit. My advice is if at all possible, try a bag out for yourself first. Borrow a friend's if need be before investing. This is especially true when some of these bags are creeping half way up to a grand in price!

Just realized I’m really into camera bag comparison videos. 😍
Haha 😂 it seems like you might not be alone! Lots of engagement happening in the comments here!
@@dunnadidit that’s fantastic! I love backpacks so much, it’s fun to watch other people go through them and show all the nice parts.
I have too many... it’s a problem
Thank you both for speaking the truth. Love you guys and girl.
I wouldn‘t be mad if you just bought another one and made a review, really liked the last one! 😂
Thanks Klint! I like that name, Klint K!
@@JaimeGFX @LUITE oh Jeeze. Well I feel silly now 😂😂😂
@@dunnadidit all good i think you said in a previous video you arent much of a gamer more into retro games?
I was going to buy the PM backpack, but your review changed my mind. I’m very happy I got to see this review!
I’m happy to hear that the video was helpful!
FYI, I bought the Peak Design Travel bag on your recommendation. Got the medium cube too. I had been considering Peter's bag for about a year but the price always turned me off... your review was super thorough and it helped me a lot. Thanks!
Glad it helped you make a decision!
We got 2x PD 45L and bought multiple cubes. We just load up the cube that contains the gear for the job.
We have a video cube, a photography cube, a live stream cube, lens only cube, even a support cube (for all the effects, lens filters, tools etc)
We can mix and match and load it to the PD 45L bag. Plus storage and organization is easy cause the gear are already in the cubes.
For the Nomatic PM bag, you got to take all your stuff out and load it every time you need a certain config.
One point for camera cubes for sure!
That Peak Design bag looks kind of perfect for me. Congrats Dunna. My wallet hates you. Again.
Yeah... not that I've been using backpacks a lot lately since I'm stuck at home but my wandrd is looking kinda sad lately cause the PD is even a pretty awesome daily carry.
With the accessories including the camera cube/backpack, accessory case, etc... it brought my purchase to over $1100.00
Next I really like Peak Design and their bags along with my Lowepro backpack as on the straps I can attach the Peak Design Camera Clip!!!
Great detailed thoughts!! Thanks for sharing!
Nice!!
Yeah that’s nice!
I have the PM, but yea I love the the tuck straps on the PD. If I had to buy it again, that’d be one of the selling points.
Best review on TH-cam for both these bags. I wish I would have come across this one way sooner. Peak design all the way. But not hating on Peter’s either.
Thanks so much!
Thanks a ton dude! Both great bags but those little touches are nice!
Great review video. As a big PD owner and an owner of the 45L, Im a huge fan of it. For me, point system went as follows PD:15, Tier 1, Nomatic 1. Overall, solid review man - love it.
Woah! Even more of a blowout by your score haha!
Never thought i would say this, but my favorite travel and backpack for photography is actually not a backpack at all but works fantastic as one. The Peak Design Travel Dufflepack 65. You should really try it. After over a decade traveling and shooting we just clicked and are now best buds :)
Ooh now you’ve sparked my interest!
Those folks know how to make a bag for sure! I have their carryon roller too and its awesome!
Thats how i wear my bag most of the time and when i need the strap, I dont even have to take it off to find them ;)
The bags are huge! But I would love to have Peter McKinnons camera bag, it is so module and well thought out. Both are excellent, but I prefer Pete's.
Nice! It's a killer bag for sure!
I got it. It’s just too big for anything other than traveling.
BTW... as far as light and rugged, the Shimoda line is excellent!
To each their own. I love the “poop” color. Most bags have a boring gray interior.
I love supporting PM, but Peak Design is just at another level.
Haha this review made me realize how much PM stuff I have around.
@@dunnadidit Well, I volunteer as a sacrifice to take some off of your hands.
Haha 😛
I have to say that my Lowepro 450 AW II serves me well, even tho I wanted to ''upgrade'' from it. I think none of those two are really a upgrade. But the review was just perfect! Everything mentioned that is important! Good job
Hard not to get gear acquisition syndrome sometimes hey! Thanks for the kind words about the video!
I love my Peak Design! Its been all over the world and it still looks brand new. Just some wet wipes to knock off some dirt and its clean! Kudos PD!
Bought both. Kept the peak 45. Depth is everything.
Absolutely awesome video man!! I am a fan of Peak Design for various products but damn this comparison is crazy good!! I know their Travel backpack is awesome, this made it even more apparent how good it is!
Thank you so much!!
That hook at the start 👌🏼
Thanks brotherman! Playing with stuff like that lately!
Love dunna’s videos such amazing videos and helpful for me to finally choose which bag to buy
Thank you so much!!
Nice!
Finally a decent camera bag comparison! Nice job Dunna!
Thanks so much!!
Wild, I did not expect that! I still love the inner compartment for the PM bag way better, but I was with you all the way up to that point.
Oh Dunna, the hook at the start! Perfection! Great video dude!
Thanks dude! I appreciate it!
Just so it's said... ninja turtles are basically the coolest. So when you say you look like Donatello, I took that as a good thing.
@@dunnadidit LOL point taken
You can get the ulanzi copy of the Pd tripod now for 300. Not that 300 is cheap. But it’s cheaper. Lol
I got the 30L Peak Design Everyday Bag and will not give it up. Side access is great
Nice!
Ordered my PD and some cubes for an upcoming Puerto Rico trip on the 11th. Will try it out for that and if I like it I’ll keep

Dunna: I like big bags and I cannot lie...
Thank you Thank you... *takes bow
great review, but you never mentioned which bag you like using better. Which one is your favorite?
Peak.
A few things I think you missed with this review
On the Peter bag those adjustment straps at the top of the shoulder straps are called load shifting adjusters... when you have the waist strap done up you can transfer the weight of the bag to your waist and off your shoulders by loosening them this also gives massive airflow behind your back.
the Peter bag also has a frame/ chassis built into it
the peak design does not have this
Also iv ask a few peoples about the Peter bag and they’ve said it took some time for the straps to wear in before they become comfortable.
Other people have commented that the peak design bag straps dig in when fully loaded because of the thinness of them
So how long did you use each bag before this review????????
I love peak design but those straps + no chassis or load shifter is a massive fail on their behalf also bad air ventilation on the back is also an oversight some pretty big oversights for a very innovative company to make on a bag made for carrying heavy camera gear
I’ll have to wait for both companies to release a v2 of these before I lay my money down
Thanks for your input!
I had both, ending up selling the peak design bag, the Peter McKinnon is superior in every way
Some of these comparisons seemed like they were going to be a point for Nomatic but then all of a sudden were for Peak lol.
Haha I do that all the time... “Jeeze I miss the wandrd duo...let’s switch em out for a bit!”
@@dunnadidit 🤣 I really want that one too! I dream of backpacks 24/7 yet I never leave my house hahaha!
I have both and I can say that PM straps are more confortable than PD and prefer the interior organization. On the rest of things I prefer PD.
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
I'm giving myself credit as the first person to guess PD would win in your poll yesterday lol
Haha
Just for the zippers alone I would go with Peak Design. It always is the first thing that fails in my bags. People at Peak Design really know their craft.
Great video!!! I have been looking at getting a travel bag for my planned trips after COVID and for my wedding shoots. These were the two I have been bouncing back and forth between these two so it was nice to see a review between them. I have the PD 30L everyday and love it so I was a little partial to the PD Travel bag lol.
Well I’m glad this was helpful!
With the PD large camera cube, there is enough space on the top for the Field pouch which I use for extra batteries, SD cards, shutter remote, and a backup hex wrench. No where near as much space as the Tech pouch though.
I usually put my gloves, toque and buff up there when I’m out in the cold. Great point!
Nice! Thanks for the reccomendation!
Let’s be honest the Peter McKinnon bag is just more expensive because of the name. That’s why I really don’t like collaborations with brands.
I just bought the PD everyday backpack v2, which is a great upgrade from the v1. Thinking about picking this up as well so I'm covered for everything, nice review man!
I really need to check out the v2. I went with wandrd over the v1 way back in the day. But the v2 looks dope!
Well done!
Peter McKinnons camera bag I need it!!!
It's a sick bag for sure!
If you compare the 30L peak design against the 25L Nomatic it tips way more in favor of Peak Design. The 30L starts at $230 and the 25L Nomatic at $300 both without camera cubes or dividers.
I didn't expect such an in dept review. You went all in.
I sure tried!
I'll be chasing the perfect backpack for my entire life.
Same boat. will never end :)
Yup 100%
I am loving the onemo backpack. It has a lot of the good features from both of these backpacks.
Yeah, I mean, you nailed it... but you already knew that’s what I thought 😜
Nice! Glad you got to try them both and pick which works best for you!
Me: Wow I'd love either
Wallet: never gonna happen
Hahaha
Dam, I'm convinced the "Peak Design" was "DESIGN" to blow Peters out the water
The interesting thing there is that the peak design came out a year before
Having used the Pm nomatic pack..i totally agree with all your points - i tried using it as my one bag travel but..there were a lot of flaws for my personal needs. the zippers were pretty annoying, i kept thinking i needed to break it in..but alas no luck no budge. Overall still my one bag for transporting a lot of gear (but not having to wear the backpack for a long period time) Merely as a transport bag
Nice! I totally hear you, thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I tried to be as comprehensive as possible!
Great review Dunna! I haven't used this model of the Peak bag but the Nomatic bag is my favourite bag I've ever travelled with.
Thanks dude!! How much of the space do you use for coffee stuff and how much for camera stuff?
@@dunnadidit ha! That's the real question isn't it? The gear bag is usually just gear for me, coffee supplies find their way into my roller carry-on with my clothes.
Haha nice! That’s probably the smartest way lol
Great review! I have both and go back and forth! Cheers!
This review is really good. Thorough, and helpful. Thx
Thanks a ton!
Thumbs up and joined on Patreon!
Stoked to have you on there dude!
LOL, Peter's gonna be mad at you. Just kidding, that was a great comparison. I have Peter's Bag with all the accessories and I love it. I have zero regrets with the purchase. The PD does look brilliant though. Thanks for the awesome comparison!
Lol thanks a ton! Yeah the accessories from both brands are pretty great!
Same here. I have the whole PM/Nomatic travel system and couldn't be happier with it. Fits all of my stuff perfectly!
Nice!
I have the 30L PD and love it, but it doesn’t work as a travel bag! Been looking at both of these guys. Thanks for the great head to head! Clears it up for me👍
My pleasure!!
Thoughts?
Hmm. I don’t know that one but I suppose anything becomes a camera bag if you put a camera cube in it haha. I’ll have to check it out!
Awesome review man! TBH I love my Nomatic bag but the wheight is just too much! The waist strap was definitely a must while hiking through Austria last year 😜
I hear ya, they’re both a bit heavy for sure!
Awesome review!! So comprehensive and it flowed really well.
Thank you so much, that means a lot after I put a lot of extra care into making it!
Can u do a video setup on a budget like one light cheap camera and stuff like that?
I’ll consider it!
This is the last bag in the collection for me to rule them all!
Haha I say that every time I get a bag
Til next version. Lol
Great review and comparison
