    Thanks. Good review, clear and complete - I need a pack for my DSLR and want to upgrade from my 400AW. The feature that sold me on LowePro is the rear access. Kyle, I always use the waist strap because I don't have to take off the pack and set it down. I simply get out of the shoulder straps, slide the pack around and open the back panel to access my gear. I also appreciate the integrated rain cover.

    Love the Lowepro. If the laptop pocket were bigger so I could fit a 16inch Macbook Pro and a 12.9 inch iPad plus some space for a file folder or notebook, it would be my perfect backpack.

    Very nice review, although the Lowepro weighs-in at almost 3kg according to their website whereas the 30 litre PD weighs almost 1kg less (with dividers). In Australia at least, airlines are very strict on total weight limits of carry-on luggage, so with the Lowepro, it might incur extra expenses or the user be obliged to check it in, or alternatively, some equipment might have to remain at home. I do like the Lowepro in principle though, and your reasons for preferring it were quite compelling

      @@robertlee6338 I think it's obvious that you weren't in Terminal 4 of Tullamarine when I was, or you'd have seen airline staff checking carry-on baggage for weight, except those who were carrying things like laptop bags.

    Great review. I got the Peak Design Travel bag and found some similar issues with functionality....you can't open the front compartment when you've got the bag lying down with the main compartment open, so it renders the front compartment useless. I also don't like how they don't have have those zipper pockets on the inside flap the way the LowePro bag does...I love being able to access everything all in one place. I don't want to have to close everything up, and flip the bag over to reach the zipper pouches in the front compartment. I waited too long to return my Peak Design bag so I'm probably just going to keep it for other purposes, because it still is a really nice bag, but I recently bought the LowePro Protactic for my videography purposes.

      I've been traveling this week and can definitely confirm the convenience of the lowepro over the peak. You have some good points, I like the peak and it's a great looking bag and well built. But functionally Lowepro has worked out some kinks to make it a better bag. At least for us videographers.

    • @praxis-cat870
      @praxis-cat870 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use the pass-through zippers on the divider compartment to reach anything in the front compartment provided you're not using the large camera cube. I love my PD Travel Line, but it's a travel bag first and a camera bag second, with the lowpro being a camerabag first and a travel bag nowhere.

      My feelings about Peak Design is that it's a company that makes great products overall in terms of quality but they are lacking the "photography-sense" in terms of functionality with their backpacks. They play on the card of being trendy.
      Their backpacks are nicely designed in terms of esthetics and are well made but they are also design as if the team designing them have next to no experience of using camera gear in the field. This video really highlights the issues well. The access points are weird, and on top of that it is also a hazard in the making if you don't check if the sides are zipped up. They don't offer much in terms of organization and they seem like they only work if you use few large lenses in order to maximize the volume of the bag. There's not enough dividers and the options to customize the layout. They also offer very little in terms of additional pockets and storage areas. As if they are meant to carry just the cameras and lenses, ignoring that both photographers and videographers need so much more.
      It sucks to see that because the company has so much potential. I am a very satisfied user of their Slide strap as well as the capture clip.
      But I don't see myself ever using their bags unless they do a complete 180 with their design philosophy for the backpacks.

    I had the same dillema so between the 450 and peak design .... I went with the 350. I found Peak Design not great for me because even the "30L" version is actually 22, but if you extend it via the magnetic latch, on the 3rd and 4th bracket it creates some "holes" where rain and dust goes in easily.

    Hi Man, nice review. I am in a similar situation myself. I have had the smaller Peak Design everyday since release and I have been looking at either the 350Aw or 450aw. My only concern is if 450 might be a little too big. I tend to carry a Fuji X T1 with a 35 and 85, an X100F and a Leica M4 and maybe a drone. I’ll have to see them in person. I guess having extra room for some clothes or a jacket might be a good thing too.

    Excellent review Kyle! Really good insight to the Protactic AW II. I'm in a similar situation having the Peak Design V1 20L backpack and looking to upgrade to a bag with more capacity. Narrowed down to either the PD 30L V2 or the Protactic. Love the rear access and prefer the dual side access of the Protactic, presume quicker access when using 2 camera bodies at weddings. I find the PD works well for day to day travel as well as being tidier with its loose straps and IMO better looking 🤔 How does capacity compare? Which bag do you think you could fit more into?

  • @mattbrowning8624

    How do you feel about the 450 as of now? I'm debating between that and the Everyday Backpack V2 30L. Will be using it for GoPro & accessories as well as an EDC and as a carry-on travel bag. Guessing with either one I'd still need an actual case for the GoPro stuff instead of sticking all of it directly in the bag?

      Still love it for long trips and flights. It's a bigger bag so I don't use it as much around town or day trips but for a few days it's great. The padding it offers for gear is top notch. It fits under a seat but just fits. If you need to put it in overhead it's a bit tight but also works.. it's been a while I don't think it works facing toward the door on overhead so it would sit length wise.

    Amazing review! I’m currently using the incase dslr pro and I’ve been looking around for a new bag as I want more flexibility with what I can pack stuff in. Because with the incase, the dividers are 2 long ones and a bunch of short ones, the main compartments are vertical... which can waste a bunch of space. I’m looking for a way to set up my camera stuff vertical and use the rest of the space for a packing cube and put some travel clothes in. I’m a minimal packer and use minimal photo gear. The review you did was amazing, and I feel I’ll get the lowepro, one question I did have was, for the water bottle pouch, does it fit and Nalgene 1L bottle? And I’m also wondering if this bag is compliant with European domestic carry on dimensions (without the pouch attached).

    I have the PD 30L at the moment, but will buy the Protactic 450 II along side it. Both are great bags and suit their own need. The PD has quirks and need another mindset when packing. Have a question though, you are quite a broad guy too, do you find the PD a bit small where the straps meet the bag and how does it compare to the Lowepro?

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just tried both on for comparison. Because the peak has the swivel mechanism where it attaches I'm only seeing maybe a half inch more width on each shoulder with the Lowepro. That being said the Lowepro straps are significantly more comfortable, especially with a fully loaded bag. They have much better padding, the Peak is very dense in comparison. I'm a big peak fan, I just think Lowepro has done a better job at this time, I'm excited to see what Peak's next iteration of their bag is.

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was using the GearUp Case Large - amzn.to/2t7wrBO but honestly I wouldn't recommend this standalone outside of the Lowepro Protactic bag as it really doesn't offer much padding. It comes with two padded pockets but you have to remove them to fit the Mavic. I put my Mavic in a padded sleeve then inside this bag with chargers, remote and spare battery. The Protactic will fit under a plane seat I recently did this on a trip. It is tight but it fits.

There's a few ways to attach it but I found that the one strap on the shoulder works perfectly for it and can support the weight of the camera with a lens no problem. Hey, how tall are you? I’m debating the 350 or 450. I’m 6’2” 225lbs.

      Broken down yes but not comfortably. It would have to lay flat so it takes up a lot of space.

  • @arijitghosh6378

    since it has the waist strap can it be used as a flipside bag?

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't used the flipside bag personally, but it looks like it has some extra support straps for that manner. You could probably use it quickly to get something out but I don't think it would stay in that position without some handholding.

    Great video! Do you think it would be usable to pack half of camera equipment and other for storing miscellaneous items? Planning a trip later this year to Japan so a pack where I can also store warming layers and random items.

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. I just travelled from the US to Lithuania for a week and did just that. About 2/3 gear and the rest was general travel items. Because it's so modular you can build a layout exactly the way you need to store stuff, it's very efficient.

    Awesome review man! Really enjoyed it. I have the v1 and am looking at getting the v2. Quick question. When you travel can you use the Lowepro as a backpack/personal item and put it under the seat or do you check it as a carry on?

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! I've travelled twice with it so far, once domestic and also international and have carried it on along with a rolling bag that was larger. It fit under the seat or in the overhead no issues (a bit tight under the seat). Granted different airlines have different policies but I doubt you'd have an issue based on my experience.

    • @FrankNeulichedl
      @FrankNeulichedl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EthanBares If you can can carry it on your shoulders it's will never be checked ... even on small planes they let you keep it ... it's more a mental thing I guess - but with all the roller-carry which are more boxy they are almost ignore backpacks in my experience. They can't even imagine how heavy they can be :D
