Zak George's Dog Training rEvolution thank you for the tips i might get a germensheperd dog and the dog name zeus i was thinking to name my germensheperd that hefore watching your video
I wish you could fly to St.John's to teach my energetic girl. She's part German, part husky. Having major trouble with the leash. Not helping that the first snowfall has occurred and she will not settle down. I've had successful walks with mild pulling , however I live in a neighbourhood with lots of animals and children. Today was by far our worst day and I could not distract her and the pulling was at max power. It would be a miracle if someone helped me with this 9 month old, super cheeky, smart, and powerful girl.
Hi Zak, I have a morky that is 2 years old but continues pee anytime she gets excited. How can I get this under control because she literally pees everywhere when she’s excited. PLEASE HELP! 😕
Zak, question. We were taught by a professional dog trainer (about 10 years ago), that play tug is bad because it teaches a dog to be aggressive (we had a Golden Retriever). What are your thoughts on this? It looks like you play tug with dogs...and it looks like you know what you are doing...so I just wanted to know since we are getting a new puppy soon.
Great work! The best tutorials are ones like these where you see THE REAL DEAL. Real dogs, not pre trained dogs.. showing mistakes rather than cutting them out and only showing the good only makes it harder for people to learn. Great job Zak..
My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article th-cam.com/users/postUgkxibD_L3sDyYENL5CwePCd9plRBqjzw2mw At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is a good stuff.
Gotta say your methods of really insisting no force necessary is nothing short of inspiring. Thank you for doing these. Right now trying to deal with a 12 week old black lab and right now she thinks she's in charge. Working on that, and hopefully this will help for walks.
Love this! Thanks for not advocating pain to train a dog! Redirecting is awesome. Most people think redirecting doesn't work but you proved it does! :)
Maya Rego yea sure it worked... if you’re fine with bouncing around in front of your dog on a walk instead of actually just walking your dog. This guy is a joke
I just went on a walk with my 1 1/2 year old dog. And I was about to cry with defeat. I came inside and looked up some tips online and came across this video! I’ve tried so many tips with training and none have worked. After I watched this I took her on a walk around my block and DID EXACTLY what you showed in the video. It went so well! And she had fun and wasn’t wheezing or upset from me being frustrated! I can’t wait to try this again tomorrow night! Thank you thank you thank you!
My dog used to do that aswell I trained her on a harness by giving her treats every time she walked by my side without running ahead. Try making the leash shorter so he'd be closer to you and every time he walks at your pace give him a treat and tell him good boy. It worked on mine. Also try walking him/her at night at first. Less distractions. Hope I helped.
I have the same problem with my 9 month old German Shepherd, it's a common problem I know, but he's already much bigger than every other German Shepherd I've seen and it looks very threatening D: >
My little Zeus did great that day. Lol and he has been doing great ever since. Now if only I could get him from chewing up anything with stuffing in it. I swear he is going to turn into a stuffed animal one of this days. Lol thanks again Zak and Bree
I watch my son's dog for him through the week, Dexter is a malti-poo. High, high, energy, I am 62 with spine issues, I really want to Thank you for helping me with Dex. He is three now, and Billy, my son, got him when he was 12 weeks old. Three lbs of cuteness, now still cute but has separation anxiety BAD, with me going home, with his Dad's at home coming here, he seems happy when all of us are together. Anyway, he barks constantly for attention, leash pulls, I have been using your techniques for training him, hard because it is late in the game but still slowly working. Thank you, thank you. 💕👍🏻
My dog walks perfect on the leash. My dad trained her as she's a family dog and we got her when I was younger. She's a golden retriever and I believe my dad did it my just walking her on a short leash and just telling her to heel over and over again when she was pulling ahead. He would say heel with a decent tug to get her to stop running ahead and eventually she responded to heel and now walks right beside me and stops whenever I stop. When she's not on the leash she runs ahead with is perfectly fine but whenever I say heel she comes right back and walks behind me without a leash. Don't know what else my dad did to train her but it worked!
Reminds me of my dad. My parents had a perfectly behaved dog even though I am 100% sure they never researched anything about dog training. However, my dad is very structured, disciplined and patient and is almost relentlessly strict in the sense that he never lets anything slide. My hypothesis is that their dog had never gotten away with anything. Regardless of how much it tried (to pull on the leash for example). I can just see my dad standing there 11PM in the cold and dark not moving an inch until the dog did what he was asked in the same calm voice over and over and over XD.
I've learned so much from watching your videos. After 8 years of begging I finally convinced my parents to get a dog. From everything I have learned from you, I decided that getting one in the summer is the best idea. This way I have 4 months of straight training, and the dog will be kinda used to us by then. I made the hardest decision when my parents asked if I wanted them to get a dog on Wednesday. Of course I had to say no, even tho I wanted one SOO bad.
I would like to see a similar video with a shy puppy that gets nervous around all those distractions. If you teach to create distance when they act scared and pull awwy from the barking dog or distraction, wouldn't that be rewarding the puppies fear? There's a 4th reason why they pull and it's "fear". Great video! Keep up the amazing training tips.
This is a completely different issue and is handled VERY differently. I'm sure I will be making this video when I come across a dog with this issue! Very nice suggestion! Zak
Zak, I think I have the dog for you... This girl of mine is pretty good on a leash, but she is VERY reactive when a stranger comes up to her. She backs away and barks, and if the person insists on coming closer, she makes a fake lunge at them. She has a tendency to scare people with her actions, which only scares her in return, making the situation worse. I've tried having people come up with treats for her, but this isn't seeming to alleviate her fears with strangers. She does ok when I can get the person to come up quietly and let HER come to them, but most people "push" to get too close too quickly. Something in her past scared her of humans, lack of socializing is my guess, and I really need to get her over this as she is in training to be my service dog. With dogs, she's the opposite, she wants to play with them.
WayaSnowpaw My 17 week old is similar. She just found her voice about 10 days ago and WOW does she use it. She will go at a threat full barking so I shush her to break her attention and she calms down a little as I walk towards the threat. It could be a person or a rolling plastic bag. Once A lead her to the threat she's fine. It's fear barking that I need to stop. When i lead, she's still scared but follows knowing I'm going to protect her. The only problem as you stated is if the approaching person locks up, gives eye contact and acts scared, she will sniff and back off. She's all bark and no bite right now. If I don't nip this in the but it will turn into real aggression. She starts puppy class tonight. I hope she acts normal away from her area. I can only wish. I got her 28 days ago. My Vet said to wait for puppy classes and dog places until her final vacinations since parvo is bad this year down here in south florida. Good luck.
WayaSnowpaw Your dog is what is called "weak nerves". The dog seeks to push away the source of fear, with a fake "lunge" at the "bad guy" hoping that this is what pushes away the stranger. If however, the stranger keeps pushing toward the dog, and not away from the dog, the dog will go into full avoidance, and run, if given a choice. if they are in a leash and can't run, then they can't do avoidance, so they will push into defense drive and try to back away the "bad guy" with a bite. This sounds like a potential fear biter. This dog needs a soft hand, not corrections, and you need to socialize, socialize, socialize. Try to make friendly strangers give small pieces of hot dog to the dog, so that when a stranger is met, it's a positive event with some food. Good luck
started using some of these techniques on my dog. small success (short attention span) but hes a 6month old boxer/lab mix. so a high energy dog. he sits well and i can make certain sounds to keep his attention. im rewarding the small victories! i have no doubt that he will continue to progress. thank you for the videos!!!
very helpful, i think the only thing you should have added at the end is that when you attempt the exact same thing tomorrow it will be as if they have never even attempted that style of training before haha, so much patience required
Wow... I've been really sad after snowie passed away...and I've been watching lot of Dog and Pup Videos... but your videos have been really inspiring and convinced me to get a new member in the family. Thanks Zak... Keep up the great work.
I just tried this on my bouncy 1 year old Cockapoo and unbelievably it worked! I'm so glad there is something that works that is also kind to the dog! I'm definitely going to be continuing with this technique. Thanks 👌
Hey Zak!! I’ve been watching your videos for months now. My baby boy is now 18 months and 70 pounds! We stared watching you when he was 10 weeks old. The material you share and teach is incredible and I appreciate you. I can’t begin to tell you how many people I have referred to you. Anyway, Kai my pit/lab mix does great on leash walks except when it comes to meeting new people or if we’re trying to walk pass a person or dog. Then he starts pulling and whining. He barks at people if they want to meet him. The only place he is friendly with everyone, dog and people is when we are at the dog park. I’m feeling a little frustrated which I know is a no no when it comes to training. I come back to you videos over and over again. I think this video will help with the redirecting of attention to “fun”. Thank you so much for all your help!!!
My dog walks perfectly on the leash until there are any other dogs or any distraction but this video really helped me I use her favorite toy and now I am more interesting than other distractions...Thank u soo much :)
:)... but I just have one big problem and that is a little dog aggresion.. My dog is 7 months old and I think she learned this behavior from her brother Zoobie who is 4 yrs old he barks at dogs but never attacks them he is very playful with them but Zoie learned barking at dogs and it escalated into aggresion. . Pls upload a video on this.. I would never like to use prong collars or any other collars accept the nylon collars I hope u make a video on this...
HBK Mania purely positive methods are fine for obedience work. However, there is obedience, such as "sit" , "down", "come" and there's rank and issues of what is proper and acceptable behavior and not-acceptable behavior. You as the pack leader must establish what you consider acceptable and un-acceptable behavior. In the dog world that there are no equals within a group of dogs. Every social group will have it's own pecking order. Lower ranking members always defer to higher ranking members. If the group doesn't have a clear leader one member will always step forward become the leader even if it's not genetically predisposed to leadership Rank is almost always communicated through subtle behaviors that each members of the pack understands and respects. Over time leaders will always establish their own set of rules that all members of the pack are expected to live by. There are well understood consequences for breaking rules. Dog owners can and must learn to become leaders. . They need to think about establishing their own set of rules that their dog is expected to live by. If what your dog is doing is not-acceptable to you, you need correction based training. There is room for both a positive based approach, with correction based approach. You need a balanced approach. You're not being cruel in using a prong collar to give a leash correction. You are being a clear leader. There's obedience training and there's "rules" of the house training. You need both.
Interesting stuff Finally somebody who got the basics down!!!. Another important concept is, people STOP humanizing your dogs!!! Real simple treat them like dogs, and that doesn't mean to be cruel or that you don't love them, it only means that since they're from a different species they process everything differently. YOU WANT A HAPPY DOG, TREAT IT LIKE A DOG.
OMG!! First try was amazing!!! Not so easy on older dogs, but the puppy went for it!!!! I was even able to chat with my neighbor without them going nuts!! BLESS YOU!!!
That means They are searching for partners , they smell the poo poo n pee pee of other dogs and pee over it to put a mark to let know that i am here available , and some times to let other dogs that thats their area dont come here, it sounds funny bt thats it i guess. And I’m 2yrs late to reply this comment 🤷♀️
Saul Silva When dog’s do that it means your dog is seeking out a prey animal, it’s smells a bird and a dead animal of some sort. Is your dog a breed that is meant for hunting and or hurding...?
I have a ten month old shepherd and they are so full of energy, i take him to a positive training dog class once a week and it is so good! We use the clicker alot! I love your videos zac!!!
Zak George You seem to have many videos on this same topic to "stop pulling on the leash". Are they a continuation of one another? Should we view them in a certain order? Thanks.
If only I'd discovered your videos when I got my dog 4 years ago! I so appreciate your focus on learning how to communicate with dogs. I spent the better part of the first 2 years rehabilitating mine. Although she's not a puppy anymore and is very well behaved with a great ability to do other miscellaneous "advanced" skills, I've struggled to communicate with her exactly what I want in other basic departments (particularly with loose-leash walking). She would do anything if were I able to effectively communicate what it is that I want from her; hopefully these videos will help us continue building our bond and polish off the fine points of her training!
"Think, reason and come to the right conclusion" Way to go :) Why we think they are mindless and need us to 'correct' them is something I can't understand. We are just impatient and short tempered. The only thing that needs correcting is us. Great video.
Aria Booth Doesn't mean it isn't traumatic to be so reactive and stressed out... Just because the buckle collar isn't doing immediate physical damage doesn't mean the ineffective training isn't traumatic.
Zak George's Dog Training rEvolution how about this kind of video but with a hound type of puppy? I have a beagel and His nose is always down and I have a hard time with that.
I have a 115 pound male german shepherd who just turned a year old with a alpha male attitude to go with it, I have been trying to get him leash walkable for months as he is a huge puller and I am only 5ft tall at 130 pounds so it can be difficult some days, I really learned a lot from your video and I am excited to take him for his morning walk tomorrow and try out some of your techniques like play time before we walk and I will for sure be taking his tug toy with us for the walk, thank you for the awesome video!! New subscriber here 🙋🏻♀️
FINALLY! A video with a german sheperd, same age as my dog with exactly the same energy! I've started leash training him a bit and he has been real good until out of the gate! every single neigbour of mine has a dog, including a new puppy next door, so he barks and pulls like crazy! Gonna try this when I train him to walk outside of our yard :D
my husband and I adopted a rescue dog two Sunday's ago. Our first walk on that first sunday, she pulled and dragged me the whole way. My husband did the old training of yanking back on the leash/harness... it didn't even phase her. I tried your method these last 5 days and a world of difference! She is a really good dog.. we LOVE her. she is my first dog and I have been using your techniques on sit, stay, lay down and she is learning. she is really smart and good with my four year old. I am really happy to have her and to have found your videos. thank you. I still can't seem to get her to wanna play. she just looks so bored... any additional suggestions?
Why doesn't petflow ship to Canada? Shipping to Vancouver is not much further than shipping to Bellingham. Shipping to Detroit is pretty much the same distance as shipping to Windsor. Ship to Canada!! You will get a lot more customers!
I have a 1 year old chocolate lab. It has taken 9 months to get her to walk with out pulling. Thankfully she really isn't a barker. If a dog barks at her she will stop walking and will just look at the other dog. She was found under a deck with her brother when they were 4 weeks old (abandoned). I have had her since she was 5 weeks old. She will bark at us when we play with her. She also knew from day one of having her to whine when she had to go out side to go to the bathroom. My new training goal is to get her to not jump. It is going pretty good . Thanks for making these videos.
It depends what's causing the aggression. You don't treat the aggression, you treat the cause. What things cause him to act aggressively ? If I can help, I will.
Yes PLEASE!!! Like a sweet dog growling when he thinks someone might take something away or something. It's my biggest issue with my lil guy. Haven't seen alot about that.
This guy is seriously amazing and everyone should learn his methods because he just proves that dogs do not need to be forced into submission and that all those bonkers methods with choke chains and whatever new cruel method but with patience and love🙂
This is awesome! I plan on getting a gsd in 3 or 4 years, I know its a while out but I currently have 2 other shepherds and a poodle cross who need tons of walk training and my shepherds need to do commands when their isn't a treat and when they are asked so I got a lot of work to do with them before getting another dog. These videos are so informative! I'm going to update this comment and see if this works for my dogs! Ive tried clickers, prongs, 2' collars, slip leads etc which are clearly the wrong ways of training, I'm glad I found this video!
Hi Zak, My mom and I just got a 4yr old rescue dog in late June. We've been following a lot of your tips for leash training and one problem we've been having is that she doesn't have any interest in toys. At this point, we use deli turkey for currency, but I feel like fetch or tug of war would be so great for bonding and currency for her. Is there a way to teach a dog with absolutely no interest in toys (whether it's a ball, or a squeaky toy, or a rope) to enjoy them and eventually play fetch? Or is it something that is just a part of her personality and won't change?
I've learned a tremendous amount just watching a few of your videos. The dog wants to engage with the world. Their senses are so much more heightened than ours -- smell, sound, etc. If the owner isn't the one engaging with the dog, the dog will find something else. But really the owner is the one the dog most wants to engage with....So, if the owner can keep that in mind and devote the energy to it, and stay patient and consistent and be right there, they really should be able to train any dog
Fantastic video on leash training. We are dog sitting for my daughter and it has the exact same issue. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow and the next 2 weeks while we have him. Again, thanks.
I'm having great leash walking with my rottie german sheppard mix. He is 3 months old. Yet I like to watch videos incase we do run into future issues. We even have him sitting before crossing the road. He is such a smart dog :)
I have a 8month old Rottie and he sit before crossing the road and I have him looking both ways to see if cars are coming if car are coming he will stay sit down and if no cars are coming he will stand up and look at me to say lets go :) very smart dogs
The ideal way to work with a dog like this is to play fetch ahead of time so that their energy is expended. Once their energy is out, they can absorb new concepts like walking slowly next to a person while tethered to a leash. If your dog doesn't know how to play fetch, this should be the priority over the next 2-12 weeks. I have a fantastic video on teaching your dog the perfect fetch and how to deal with the most common roadblocks that many encounter. Good luck! Thanks for watching! -Zak
sabby559 It definitely is, but the work really REALLY pays off. My dog is getting much more obedient and I can walk him and run with him without problems. Now I'm trying to train him off leash so I can openly play fetch with him at the park :) but it's definitely difficult!
I have two 4 months pitbulls and they bark at everything and always pull. They have so much energy. I am definitely going to try this as well. Maybe my puppies are too young but they are very energetic.
Thank you so much for making this video! I've taken my 9 month old Mini Schnauzer to a variety of trainers who suggest yanking on the collar, feeding her lots of treats, and even getting a pinch collar. I refuse to ruin the relationship I've built with my dog, so thanks to your video, I now see my problem and know how to fix it. We will start training her during separate walks and exercising her beforehand.
Get your puppies in good walking habits from the beginning and you won't encounter any issues later on. I believe all training should be approached this way too, including "sit, and all that other stuff".
I'm in love with your charisma omg, if only I had the same amount of enthusiasm haha; I'm more of the quiet and stern type. Need to work on that, guess it'll be training for both of us. I have a three year old Doberman and he is such a sweetheart but due to my schedule around work I haven't had too much time to walk him and work on proper leash walking etiquette. I started working from home now and have so much more time for my dobe, he demands a lot of attention and affection and playtime. People are intimidated and scared by his loud barks and size; he has never bit anyone and though he does jump up at times, he is just overly excited and energetic. I'm starting training again and just ordered a cage muzzle for more peace of mind. He has shown a bit of aggression towards other dogs but never humans or cats (we have a cat at home who is the king of the house.) I subscribed and will apply your methods, thank you so much; will donate sometime in the near future.
I just found your videos this morning!!! Thank you!! We are training a husky puppy & already I know your training is going to come in handy. So appreciative!
THANK YOU!! I have a border collie pup and this worked on him so well we went to the park and everybody was all over him petting him asking to take him on walks around the park
My dog is fine on leash except when another dog is coming, often he launches at them to greet them but the way he does it the other dogs feel intimidated by the approach and he gives a good pull on my arm when I'm not paying full attention since I don't expect it. I have been trying to correct this for a long time without success. I feel like with treats I had the most success, I tried this method for few weeks but as soon as I don't give him treats for a couple of days he reverts back quickly. I exercise him daily, he gets 3-4 walks and the first one in the morning is to play fetch for about 30 minutes and drain his energy, but at night he's again misbehaving. Any ideas?
Imagine trying to take your dg for a walk and constantly having to jump around like a clown pacing back and forth every 10 meters. If you simply make a sharp noise and touch the tog in way that doesnt hurt just snaps him/her out of it if any pullin. jumping , exciteable behavior occurred, assert yourself and wait before the dog is calm sitting again before the walk continues. Obviously treating good walking all the time.
You don't have to do it constantly, only when you're training it - literally a few sessions. Why scare your dog with a sharp noise, how is that young to effect his trust and bond with you?
Thanks to your previous leash walking videos, I now have a 7 month old catahoula x pit that walks pretty well. Pulling is not her problem, so much as stopping. We live in the country, and the squirrels, birds, and deer droppings are our main obstacles. I love the concept of 'being more interesting than the distractions,' and plan to incorporate this into our future walks. That was such a good 'ah ha!' moment for me.
sorry but I dont like "creating distance" as you call it because if there is any fear in the dog that is barking then you taking it away means it feels like its fear was justified because your fleeing.
+Leoni Jorna That`s not how it works. When you retreat, you`re teaching the dog that flight is an acceptable reaction to fear (rather than fight). Flight is preferable, and that distance then gives you the opportunity to reapproach while counter conditioning to get rid of the fear. If you don`t retreat, what you`re doing is called flooding, which doesn`t get rid of the fear. It suppresses it temporarily, but it usually resurfaces more intensely the next time the trigger is presented.
David Moore piss on everything, hiss at you, act like there on drugs or something, shed hair everywhere, and always breaking shit when they climb on everything ETC
To be honest, dogs can do all of these things and worse too. But, dogs are trainable. So I think the reason you hate cats is that they are not very trainable, and they do what THEY want. ;) Their owners are just food dispensers and they have very little care for them, while a dog's owner is their pack leader and means so much more. I vote for dogs!
These videos are super awesome, I'm enjoying watching these as I prepare to bring a very high energy and excited 10 month Husky into my Household. can't wait to try all these things with her!
unless you plan to jump around like a moron while walking your dog your advice will never work all your doing is making the dog more excited and when the dog is excited its not going to follow you also the dog should never be leading the walker that puts the dog in a protective mode and could lead to trouble all you effectively did in my opinion is teach the dog to jump at at toys and try to sell me something
DisturbedDH Zak said to play tug of war BEFORE training. He also advised not to try to teach this while on your regular walk, but to have training sessions prior to walking. Those sessions are where you use a lot of body motion to get the dog to focus on you so that he isn't distracted by other things. And remember it takes a lot of repetition to develop a habit.
Im so glad I found your videos! I have a 3 month old husky that pulls on her leash. shes still a baby we have a lot to work on. I'm glad with your videos I know now what to work on with her. she does pester my sisters older dog, and throws her body on him on him, pushes him away, and bites him. I'm trying to teach her to be more gentle and that its ok that I give him attention too. wish me luck!
Your husky sounds like my husky's long lost brother. Mine is 6 months old but he's had a problem with leash pulling since he was a baby I haven't given up yet though!
Bark and I'll reward you with a tug! I see a "what the heck is going on" expression on the dog's face and I really don't blame him. Not even including methods with physical corrections, there are much better methods that teach the dog more clearly what the desired behavior is than this amateur hour stuff.
A prong collar is a tool designed to discourage your dog from pulling, yes. However, a prong collar is a shallow way to teach a dog long-term moving forward.
agentfluffy14 Please share with me where ALL positive shutzhund training so that I can learn. Also, what police department you know of that trains ALL positive?
Ricardo Galindo Look, I don't know which police department trains dogs all positive. I never said I knew a police department that does it. But what I do know is that basically all happy healthy dogs think everything is a game. Training can be thought of as a game for them. There is no difference between a police dog and an ordinary house dog. It just depends in the levels of training. Positive reinforcement helps the dog in the long run. It creates a better bond between person and dog. It's more humane too. Dogs are smart beings. Don't degrade their intelligence for your lack of patience.
My golden retriever pup has a ridiculous amount of energy and that's why my wife and I collectively take her out for walks and (especially this time of year) playing in the snow. You will see that exercise is the single best element for any dog (and for us, admittedly). I used to have some sleepless nights here and there but not one since we got her 5 weeks ago! She is a LOT of work but so worth it. Give your dogs exercise, which is something they deserve, and you will have such a happy companion. Puppies don't know how to channel their energy and this is the single most significant hurdle new dog owners don't fathom....
An excellent method I found to stop my dog from pulling was using walking as a reward. As soon as she started pulling, we simply stopped walking until she made the leash slack on her own and the reward was that we could continue walking. It took a lot of patience, but she's made great progress. It did not help get her focus on us like this method does, but it's something we're working on now that we've got the pulling under control.
The best video for high energy dogs. We have a perro de agua espanol and he barks at all dogs that gives him attention. The toys with sound and then use something like a freesbie to play with him with is awesome. He is focused on us. But he loses the focus on us if we only use the toy with sound, we need to play tug with him to keep the focus.
It seems like he knows what he is doing to me - he loves dogs and does a great job and is realistic ("it could take weeks or months of training to get them to do this consistently") ... No reason for put downs - if you don't like him better if you don't watch ...
My dog chip is amazing I have had him for five days now and he is already potty trained and he also knows how to sit on command and walks perfect.I'm only having trouble with crate training.
My dog's getting better and better walking on the leash! My goal is to touch 'leave it' and to have him walking by my side without any tension. Just within the last week alone, I've noticed by walking regularly, and keeping my expectations of him consistent, it has really helped with both tasks. Could you do a video on teaching your dog to wait for your command before crossing a road? Thanks!
And yet another THANK YOU! I've been using a hati head collar with the whole, stop when dog pulls and resume walking right away and give treat when tension stops on lead, although it has had some good results and doesn't hurt him, I don't like it as my baby isn't enjoying his walks as much as he should as he really does not like the hati but without it he is just how this GDS was at the begining, he wont take treats on his walk as that dog across the street at way more interesting than my treat and vocal praise will take a look at some of your other lead videos and head out without the hati and try this as I think he will really respond to this type of training and I don't mind making a fool of myself in public to ensure he enjoys his walks!!! Thanks again!!!!
My dog is absolutely wonderful on the leash! It took a decent bit of time to train him on that, but that was mostly because I wasn't very consistent in the beginning, once I became consistent he learned very quickly and is now a joy to walk.
This is very helpful as my lab/pitbull mix rescue was a backyard dog and had no leash experience. He's come a long way but still lunges at squirrels, dogs, cyclists, joggers. He's not consistent so it's hard to catch him before the act; he could lunge at any moment.
My 3 yr old Aussie doesn't pull when walking in general. However, when we're headed into the Petsmart or when I have taken him to the dog park, he'll go nuts because he can't wait to get in there and go play with the other dogs. He's getting better at Petsmart because he's learning that it's not the dog park and he won't be allowed off leash to play. He does wonderfully at the SPCA Dog Walk events (no pulling, though sometimes I wish he would just to help ME get up the hill) with 100s of dogs around. He only pulled when we were approaching the entrance to the outdoor event, I believe because he first thought it was again the dog park where he'd get to get off leash and go play. Once he realized that wasn't the case, he settled down. Mostly he's very good on leash and doesn't pull. He may suddenly pull at a smell by a tree or grassy area in the parking lot at pet store or Lowe's, but I consider that normal behavior. I don't get upset over that because it lasts only seconds. I would like for him to be calm when approaching the entrance to places like the pet store and the dog park (leary of dog parks because not everyone keeps their dogs vetted). Any place where he seems to think he's going to get to go play. My other Aussie girl that passed in 2013 was therapy trained. She pretty much taught herself, in that I mean, I never had to leash train her, she was glued to my side and when she was on leash she was quiet and calm and in "therapy mode." Off leash she knew she had more freedom, under guidance, to go run around and play. My boy isn't quite getting that concept. But I really have no major complaints about his leash work.
Awesome video, when I got my german shepherd when he was 3 years old, he use too pull us as we walk him, but now he walks without the lash and he can run freely and still keep us eye distance. I will get video of us and I will upload so you can see it.
My 8 month old Doberman used to pull like crazy. I thought about a prong collar but got turned to a leash called "Gentle leader". Which was basically a leash that goes around their neck AND mouth so if they try to pull, it just turns their head towards you so they can't. He got the hang of it with 5 minutes. I continued to use it when walking and running with him and it's so much easier. I highly recommend it. It made me feel good knowing I got him to stop pulling without hurting him with a prong collar
so glad you've done this. my aussie puppy has no interest in treats at all when there are new people and smells and things to be eating that he's not supposed to have. that, and he's not a huge fan of the leash either; yet my trainer's go-to is treats, always, and /I/ feel like the failure. I'm gonna go with this method instead and really start working hard when it's warm out and hopefully we'll both be enjoying walks soon
I’ve got a german shepherd crossed with a Belgian Malinous and he pulls like crazy while on the lead and only barks at other dogs when they are both on a lead, I am definitely going to try this. These videos are a great help
Thank you for this video it’s super helpful. My current German Shepherd walks fairly nice on the leash. Now the nine-month-old new rescue husky is a different story. She has been a bit of a nightmare when it comes to leash training. But she loves tug so I will give this a try thank you.
One of my dogs knows how to walk perfectly on the leash now and he used to be a prolific puller. All done without even changing the harness he used to pull in. I did use food to lure in the early days, but after a few months of consistent drills, he can do it. He's such a cool dog and just wants to please.
I have spent hundreds to almost thousands on different trainers for my puppy husky. he has a pulling issue and all of the trainers recommend different things which seem inhumane to me. one says a prong collar, another one says shock collar or just a rope and choking him with different types of stimulation until he submits. It seems so inhumane, but they have so many good ratings and my family encourages me to follow this program. I have had them choke our dogs until their tongue sticks out and they are literally choking. I have him improve sometimes but then fall back to pulling shortly after we come home from the session. We cannot seem to get him to stop and the different methods and frustration has created a lot of tension in my household. I am glad to see there are humane ways to train a dog to walk
Brandon mcmillan is the most gentle, thorough and effective dog i've ever encountered. My friend and i love the dog show and never miss it. So many times we've shed a tear of happiness just seeing a dog's life changed forever when proper training is applied and they go on to live their lives the way they should. I have brandon's book th-cam.com/users/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq in two formats. Not only the paperback version but also the kindle version to refer to when i don't have the paperback along with me. I have used his methods with my cavalier kc spaniel and turned a non-disciplined furbaby into a companion who has traveled thousands of miles with us across the country. He is a near perfect dog thanks to brandon's methods. I don't get one cent of kickback for recommending brandon but i do it because i love dogs. They deserve to be given a chance. Brandon's mission in life - to rescue dogs and place them in a forever, happy home - is very dear to my heart. I recommend his methods to anyone who has a dog - young or old. I've seen him take even old dogs and teach them. Brandon was an animal trainer before his current mission. His parents were animal trainers. His methods are the best i've ever found. Your furbaby will thank you for spending the money on this book. Don't hesitate - it is worth every cent.
Thanks for the video, it gave me some new ideas about leash training our small german spitz. We adopted him at 1 year old from a family who almost never walked with him outside. He is only 3 kg, and he pulls so hard at the leash and I correct him so many times that he makes my arm sore. I think I need to do a play session before the walk to get his attention on me. Thanks a lot!
I hope you guys enjoy! Here's a playlist that will show you how to teach your dog the basics in order: th-cam.com/play/PLMssKIjsDxXmMGypWsr8u-yGOUSoPoozb.html Thanks for subscribing!
Zak George’s Dog Training Revolution nice one my German Shepard is wild on a lead will try some of ur tips tks dude
Wow, you're a great instructor for the owners and dogs.
+Maxena Megalabrainiac Thank you!
thanks so much for this help. I need it so much for my pulling beagle
3:14 the dramatic cat had me lmaoing
laughing your ass offing
Lmaoo
Lol 😂
My dog does the same thing he’s 9 months German Shepherd, I feel embarrassed when we go out and he does this! 😭
Does he manage to pull you
my aussi does too 🥴
My dog used to do that aswell I trained her on a harness by giving her treats every time she walked by my side without running ahead.
My ten month old newf literally drags me when he catches a whiff.. it’s horribly embarrassing!
My little Zeus did great that day. Lol and he has been doing great ever since. Now if only I could get him from chewing up anything with stuffing in it. I swear he is going to turn into a stuffed animal one of this days. Lol thanks again Zak and Bree
Hey Raven! So glad you enjoyed the video! Supervision is key with this, and daily fetch will almost eliminate all of this!
raven how did you manage to contact him to help you with your dog ?
How did it go with your dog?
Yee, how did it go?
I would like to see a similar video with a shy puppy that gets nervous around all those distractions. If you teach to create distance when they act scared and pull awwy from the barking dog or distraction, wouldn't that be rewarding the puppies fear? There's a 4th reason why they pull and it's "fear". Great video! Keep up the amazing training tips.
I would like to see this too my dog is real nervous abs shy around other dogs
Zak, you show that it takes effort to train. Lots of viewers want easy techniques, add water and mix. Thank you.
Thanks 👌
Just wanted to give some credit for this awesome channel and keep up the great work. This channel is just awesome! :)
I love this kind compliment! Thank you that means a lot.
Awesome! Glad to hear it!
:)... but I just have one big problem and that is a little dog aggresion..
HBK Mania Have you ever "corrected" (as in like a leash pop, etc.) your dog when she started barking at the other dogs?
HBK Mania purely positive methods are fine for obedience work. However, there is obedience, such as "sit" , "down", "come" and there's rank and issues of what is proper and acceptable behavior and not-acceptable behavior. You as the pack leader must establish what you consider acceptable and un-acceptable behavior.
In the dog world that there are no equals within a group of dogs. Every social group will have it's own pecking order. Lower ranking members always defer to higher ranking members. If the group doesn't have a clear leader one member will always step forward become the leader even if it's not genetically predisposed to leadership
Rank is almost always communicated through subtle behaviors that each members of the pack understands and respects.
BLESS YOU!!!
no my dog sniffs everything ._. like everything it's like we don't walk we just go for a sniff session no drugs are attended Ahaha
let him sniff man. Dogs need that kind of relaxation. no pun intended.
Mine is the same I end up dragging her for most of the walk.
Saul Silva
When dog’s do that it means your dog is seeking out a prey animal, it’s smells a bird and a dead animal of some sort.
Is your dog a breed that is meant for hunting and or hurding...?
Same! And he pulls
I have a ten month old shepherd and they are so full of energy, i take him to a positive training dog class once a week and it is so good! We use the clicker alot! I love your videos zac!!!
5:40 tongue out.. cutest scene hahaha
I not only love the way you handle a dog, I also so admire your interaction and respect for the doggie owner.
Great tips!
Thanks Petco!
***** It's Petco. They have a check mark by their name to symbolize that they are official.

You seem to have many videos on this same topic to "stop pulling on the leash".
I having a husky who always likes to be in front I know this is what they were bred for but just for once I would like a relaxed walk.
"Think, reason and come to the right conclusion" Way to go :) Why we think they are mindless and need us to 'correct' them is something I can't understand. We are just impatient and short tempered. The only thing that needs correcting is us. Great video.
@Eric Stockton, there is no proper way to use a pinch collar.
-Zak George
Says the guy who is letting the dog hurt and self correct himself on a buckle collar. A prong when used correctly would be much less traumatic....
Ilovemypetrats1 I actually believe in pinch collars and even I can see the dog isn't being hurt
Ilovemypetrats1 you're just pathetic….
New subscriber here 🙋🏻♀️
I'd be interested in seeing one of Zak's dogs. I would really like to see how a Zak George trained dog acts with other dogs and people.
FINALLY! A video with a german sheperd, same age as my dog with exactly the same energy! I've started leash training him a bit and he has been real good until out of the gate! every single neigbour of mine has a dog, including a new puppy next door, so he barks and pulls like crazy! Gonna try this when I train him to walk outside of our yard :D
ahh, I don't even know what i would do without petflow.
my husband and I adopted a rescue dog two Sunday's ago.
Omg please train my dog :( I'm going to try this! Thank you so much for your videos. Do you have a video specifically about dog on dog aggression?
+Alicia Morrow Oh yeah, do a Dog whisperer style video, but with Zak's way instead of Cesar. So people would be able to have alternative way.
+Alicia Morrow dogs need to be trained yes, but so does the owner
Mark Peterson wasn't saying they don't.
Great video!!! How often and how long should the training sessions be? I think it's me who needs to be more disciplined, not my dog :)
So I have to jump around like a court jester in front of my neighbors to train my dog?
Yes
I'm having great leash walking with my rottie german sheppard mix. He is 3 months old. Yet I like to watch videos incase we do run into future issues. We even have him sitting before crossing the road. He is such a smart dog :)
I have a 8month old Rottie and he sit before crossing the road and I have him looking both ways to see if cars are coming if car are coming he will stay sit down and if no cars are coming he will stand up and look at me to say lets go :) very smart dogs
This looks exhausting lol! What if your dog is too strong and never lets go of the toy?
Use a treat.
I have two 4 months pitbulls and they bark at everything and always pull. They have so much energy. I am definitely going to try this as well. Maybe my puppies are too young but they are very energetic.
I'm going to work with my husband first .. the getting/keeping attention before I try it on the dog.. ;'-)
The savagery 😂
Ha ha ha LOL I’m seeing this four years after your comment. I’m wondering if it ever worked on your husband 😂
We will start training her during separate walks and exercising her beforehand.
can I do this with my 3 month old gsd puppy? or do I need to teach her to sit and stuff first
Get your puppies in good walking habits from the beginning and you won't encounter any issues later on. I believe all training should be approached this way too, including "sit, and all that other stuff".
nooooooo
Yes!
Thank you Zak. This video brought it home for me and my 3 months old labradoodle Coal. I tried it and it worked great. Now we need lots of practice.
When the dog was chewing her shoelaces in the intro😂
I used the same way to teach my German Shepherd Pup and he now walks with me without a leash.. that is awsome...
nice vid
Sunita Sharma Cool!!
7:54 '''Hi Mom!''
THANK YOU!! I have a border collie pup and this worked on him so well we went to the park and everybody was all over him petting him asking to take him on walks around the park
5:41 AWWWWWWW
Yep! Cracks me up SOOO much when CATS do that 🤣🤣🤣 "Honey.... your witto tonguey..."
I just got a 20 month German shepherd he pulls like crazy so this video has really helped me lots! Thanks. Will try this technique with him 👍
My dog is fine on leash except when another dog is coming, often he launches at them to greet them but the way he does it the other dogs feel intimidated by the approach and he gives a good pull on my arm when I'm not paying full attention since I don't expect it.
That was fantastic. Have a german shepherd that looks just like Zeus and that is as excited as he is. Great stuff.
I’ve been watching so many videos on leash training and this is the only practical one I’ve found
3:14 the cat was like why they fuck do you have me on tv. I HATE CATS
+Trey Ezernack Why do you hate cats?
David Moore piss on everything, hiss at you, act like there on drugs or something, shed hair everywhere, and always breaking shit when they climb on everything ETC
Trey Ezernack THANK YOU i fucking hate cats soooooo much!!!
I vote for dogs!
dogs are baee, i have a german shephard and he legitemately defends me!!!!!!
DisturbedDH maybe finish the video first before you comment
totally agree, this method wouldnt work on my dog, unless i make my dog tired but that takes about 24 hours before getting tired
How would you do it?
I have a 5 month old beautiful GS and he pulls and this was a great learning video. I’ll be trying this later! Thx
My German shepherd does great with walks. The prong collar is great tool. He learned FAST!
A prong collar is a tool designed to discourage your dog from pulling, yes. However, a prong collar is a shallow way to teach a dog long-term moving forward.
I respect your opinion. But can you truly train a police dog or a shutzhund dog with all positive training?
Ricardo Galindo Yes, yes you definitely can.
agentfluffy14
Please share with me where ALL positive shutzhund training so that I can learn.
No way this woman will do this energetic training... just saying..
Nice tips though!
An excellent method I found to stop my dog from pulling was using walking as a reward. As soon as she started pulling, we simply stopped walking until she made the leash slack on her own and the reward was that we could continue walking. It took a lot of patience, but she's made great progress. It did not help get her focus on us like this method does, but it's something we're working on now that we've got the pulling under control.
forget all this.just simply pull your dog back so hard, all four legs leave the ground
pratyush shukla i'm worried.are you a proffessional dog trainer?
pratyush shukla
you, whatever you are, have the intelligence of a grain of sugar
all these people taking your comment seriously
jamie8520 i know,what a sad bunch. finally someone with a sense of humour.cheers mate
Wow you really don´t know how to handle a dog....
The best video for high energy dogs. We have a perro de agua espanol and he barks at all dogs that gives him attention. The toys with sound and then use something like a freesbie to play with him with is awesome. He is focused on us. But he loses the focus on us if we only use the toy with sound, we need to play tug with him to keep the focus.
this guy is a joke..very few things I agree with. Obviously doesn't understand the nature of the dog or the psychology of the dog.
I follow him and my dog is 7 months..he is turning out amazing and I have never trained any dog.
My mini schnauzer like to pull a lot! I will try it starting tomorrow. Thank you and keep up the good job! :)
It made me feel good knowing I got him to stop pulling without hurting him with a prong collar
what happens when you take it off though
Perfect timing for my young, boisterous kelpie cross. Great tips we'll be trying out today before our walk. Thank you
so glad you've done this. my aussie puppy has no interest in treats at all when there are new people and smells and things to be eating that he's not supposed to have. that, and he's not a huge fan of the leash either; yet my trainer's go-to is treats, always, and /I/ feel like the failure.
I got 2 boxers(brother and sister) and they don't listen to what I say then I tried these videos and they work thank you ZAK
One of my dogs knows how to walk perfectly on the leash now and he used to be a prolific puller. All done without even changing the harness he used to pull in. I did use food to lure in the early days, but after a few months of consistent drills, he can do it. He's such a cool dog and just wants to please.
my dog is two months old is he still old enough to train by the way he is terrier mix. I love your videos keep them up. Thanks!
