- In this episode, I teach you how to use one of the most important tools you have as a pet parent, the leash!
The leash is a tool you can use to CONNECT, GUIDE, and STOP your dog. It is important to pay attention to the energy of your dog and yourself. Remember to always use calm, confident, love and joy energy and that dogs communicate by nose, eyes, and ears.
It should be as easy as a boat in the water.
I use different dogs of different breeds and sizes to show you that this is universal.

Hello, I would like to ask, I have almost a 7-month old puppy of german shepherd and the corrections (the short pull away from distraction) with the short sharp sound dont seem to help and I think it is because of the collar he wears on the back of the neck. Do you think it can be fixed by putting the collar on the top of the neck? I´m kinda afraid to put his leash that high because he tends to lounge on dogs and he might slip off. Also thank you for still providing very educational content about how to handle the dog. Also this video was really well explained thank you for that too ^^
Love your videos, always helpful, I have 3 dogs, all rescued, my last one is a Pit mixed and in a few tries she’s not pulling. She’s from the streets of Mexico, my others are from the local shelter.

It looks so easy with all them dogs , he would not be able to get that close to my dog, i want him to see if he can do somthing with my dog but he has not replyed to me

My dog is a JRT & just turned 3 yrs old. Unfortunately she has been mistreated badly by neighbor kids, older kids & even some adults & so now she is aggressive & easily spooked & reacts aggressively to that. I've had 2 JRTs before & never had any of this trouble. How can I find possible help from Ceaser to help me with my girl? Can you please tell me? Ty!
oh I recentky rescused a abused dog and he is very aggressive when it comes to food ans sleep time with my other older dog, please suggest me what to watch as I'm new here.

I know that you don't know me, but I want to thank you for all the happiness you brought to me. I'm only 13 years old but I look up to you a lot. When I went through some hard times I didn't know you, but I know that if I would have known about you, you would have made the bad times better. Every time I watch any Dog Whisperer, Cesar 911 episode or read you books I learn more and more. I have also used some of your methods on my dog and other dogs I watch and they help me A LOT! You make a bad day a good day! Thank you! You teach so much more then "just" about dogs but also about humanity and how to live happy with yourself, other people and animals, especially with the stuff going on right now. Amelie, wow, your only 13! You write amazingly very well. Way better than 99% of the adults here on youtube write in the comments. Not kidding! I think your the only human making a comment who knows a lot is two words and your only 13. I’ve read hundreds of adult comments and none of them wrote a lot properly. Your smart and very perceptive. If you were my kid I would be pretty proud of you.
Don’t be upset if Cesar doesn’t respond to your comment. As you can see he gets hundreds of them, and well TH-cam isn’t a very good one on one personal communication tool.

I just had my first good and successful walk with my puppy. I kept saying, “I am calm, assertive and leading. You are calm, submissive and proud because I know what I’m doing.” What a different experience. Thank you Cesar!

Did you use treats ?
@@GoodxJ At the time I wasn’t using treats. I have started to use treats because we moved and he encounters way more dogs on our walks now, I used the treats to teach him to “Leave it” and focus on me instead of trying to get to the dog.
@@fankey4342 He was 4 months old at the time. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have been putting so much pressure on him or myself, but he’s a very good boy now.
I had this experience this week. All I'm think was "Be calm and be a gentle leader." but my heart was pounding with joy cause my heavy puller 6 month old labrador can walk outside without being so distracted. I even bought him new Kongs just to celebrate the day. Lol
Sometimes, when I was walking my dog, she would become aggressive toward other dogs that were walking toward us. I learned that I was causing her aggressive behavior. There were some dogs we would encounter that I thought looked like they might want to fight, so I unconsciously put just a bit of tension onto the leash, anticipating a problem. This sent the message to my dog that I was tense and that she, my dog, should become aggressive to protect me. When I learned to keep myself and the leash relaxed, my dog stayed relaxed and we had friendly encounters. Just as Cesar says, we communicate with our dog through the leash. Awesome. Thanx, Cesar.
One of the most important lesson keeping a dog in control.. it's kind of an energy transmitter. Thank you Cesar millan for everything you do to educate ourselves to become a successful Dog keeper.

@@youtubemodsaresnowflakelef7692 Instead of attacking a person bad calling them an imbecile, maybe you you try to build and commend the person for wanting to get help for their puppy. They want to do it right and not wait until the dog is an adult with a bunch of problems. Plus you don't know how bad the situation is. Maybe they just need a little education on some of ways to transmit positive energy like Cesar does. You yourself could learn a lot on how to remain positive, especially with other people. Dogs pick up that negativity and reflect it back. That creates an unbalanced, problematic dog.

I tested up a few times. It’s very touching that he’s so understand of the mind of dogs, and what’s missing from the peoples mind. He deserves a Nobel peace prize.

I BOUGHT THE LEASH! Thank you, thank you, thank you Cesar. I have a Chocolate Dapple Dachshund that barked at every dog, whether he knew them or not. He would also bark at people especially little children. All this time he wore a harness. I watched your video on barking dogs and observed that each time you took the dog from its master you placed your leash on them. I bought your leash and in less than TWO days Bradley is a new dog. With your instructions from this video it really works. Thank you so so much.

YES - I did an equine assisted therapy course, the trainer tied a short piece of thin wool to the horse’s halter and said “take him for a walk”. My first thought was, “impossible!! How can I ever control this powerful animal with only that?”. But of course I could, and I did - by walking simply with purpose and energy. Just like Cesar teaches 😊
That's why I love Cesar's training method, it's so much like how I was taught to handle horses that it feels second nature to me. As long as you're confident they are happy to let you lead. ☺

I love all your work Cesar! I don't have any dogs but I love learning about them. I hope to get a dog in the far future when I can provide the right environment for one. I see so many dog owners teaching their dogs bad standards and it frustrates me to see they have a dog but no clue on how to raise or keep one! They don't learn. I think everyone MUST learn the basics before getting a dog. Thankyou for being a shinning light to us all!

We have a new Am Staff (we adopted last week) drove 11 hour's to get her and she is on a 2 week shutdown at this time. She's also very sound reactive, in a pretty aggressive way. I've just watched and used your leash technique (was using a harness) on my ShiChi Cooper who lunges, barks at other dogs and sometimes people when on harness/lead - and first time after some inside training (sat down alot at first - not happy) - then went outside courtyard then into the street and we passed several dogs and people with only 1 melt down - soo happy with results - feel much more confident on next walk - thank you so much Cesar - what inspired me was the comment 'you don't always get the dog you want, you get the dog you need!

I bought this leash recently, after trying lots of different tools for my super energetic border collie , he is a huge puller, I had previously tried a Halti, and a harness he still had lots of controll over me, the minute I put on the slip leash it's like he turned in to the best walking dog in the country 🤣🤣 had such pleasure with him and he was rewarded with lots of ball playing and running freely 💙we love it

aww, all the dogs are saying pick me! thank you for this video. I doggy sat a couple days ago and realized I need work on the leash and I need to ask the owner for another kind of leash - the one you have. I also learned that somehow I need to be calm when surprised by another dog on a leash when they lunge and when the dog I walk lunges. Also, keeping the head up and the leash in the proper position. Ordered 3 books from amazon you wrote. Thank you so much for sharing your doggy whisperer wisdom.
You just showed us how to walk dogs that are already highly trained and obedient! Now show us what to do when they keep stopping and trying to go the other way or refuse to walk at all! That’s why we’re all here!

I know this video is older, but I had to comment. Another video about using this leash has changed my life. My pitbull is pretty good on a leash until she sees other dogs. She gets way excited and pulls like crazy. Just bought a leash like this today and we had the best walk. I used the techniques Ceasar taught and they work so well. Thanks!!!!!

I do like the fact that he is actually teaching the dog without force or pain. I know this has been a huge transition for Cesar and it is clear that the dogs enjoy he training a lot more then his past techniques. I have to say well done and for me to say that about Cesar is a huge step.

Thanks Cesar for teaching me to use my energy. I was having a terrible day but I took our gsd Valentine out for her walk. She barked once at a woman,that was it! She is leash reactive, only in our village, take her into town and she's like a different dog! Went passed a miniature schnauzer, nothing, had a sniff at it across the road and looked at me. Then two cats, one on the pavement and the other directly across in it's runway, she had a look at them, sniffed the air, sat and looked up at me. Plenty of praise and a bit of dried duck for that. When we left I was in a good state of mind because I was looking forward to our walk. I do use a halter, dogmatic are the best, but only because I have to use a walking stick. Otherwise I'd use the same lead that you use, my husband uses it though. Thanks for sharing those beautiful dogs and your tips! What was the German shepherd called? Had them for almost 29 years so I'm a wee bit biased 😂😂😂 xx

Interesting info, I wish he had demonstrated on an untrained dog because I'm having trouble understanding how this would work on dogs that pull. His dogs are already great at loose leash walking so of course it works on them. I'll have to check out halters for my dog though.
It works magic. My pitbull pulled me left and right. Once i followed direction, putting leash all the way up her neck. Took her on a walk, couldnt belive, she was walking right besides me. No pulling .
If your dog is pulling correct him by adding tension upwards and let go of the tent ion when he is not pulling and is by ur sjfe
I'll need to try this as well. I have a 6 month young puppy and will try this with him My 14 month started to pull as a learned behavior from him that I will correct. I also wish he had started with an untrained puppy to see how he corrects the pup.

How was he before? My dog is crazy pulling and not listening, she won't do what we say no matter what we do and she always jumps and bites. Really frustrating.
@@pavelescucristina4734 he was not leash trained and have no discipline framework previously - so it was almost impossible walking him. Now he never pulls and wait patiently when I pick up his poop 😍

I don't know what am I doing wrong...what is not working for me, maybe I am not calm and patient enough or...I just don't know how to do it. What did you do to make him listen to you and stop pulling the leash and be disciplined while walking him ? Mine it gets scared also. She is rescued from the streets and I don't have the courage to go in a park, I'm afraid that she gets scared and get agressive or lose control of the leash. She never left our village, we walk her only on this small streets around the house because she starts growling people walking by and at bikes too, and also dogs. If a dog from a yard starts barking she gets really out of control. So my fear and hers makes her agressive i guess
I have bought the leash now and I train my sister's boxer because he always comes to sit where I am, he walks behind me all the time and he is always listening on my command but mostly ignoring others. Now I am adopting senior dog from shelter and I want them to get along. I have also ordered dog whistle, ultrasonic device and for safe walks outside the dog pepper spray. I just love Cesar, he has helped many dogs by teaching people how to understand them.
Ordered two slip leads today to work on our dogs leash manners. I think this will be the missing piece we needed to creat trust with our dogs and keep their energy calm when we see other dogs or people on our walks. Thank you Cesar!!

That’s the problem. People don’t know how to communicate or how to interpret dogs actions. Once people learn how to communicate what you want the battle is over and patience is the key. Lol

@@vincef7487 Consistency is huge with everything we do. Watching his video taught me A LOT before I got my pitbull. And still I continue to watch to improve his behavior. Many trainers may not like Ceasars methods but I find them to be extremely helpful

I have a German Shepard, he used to bark at others but I fixed that. Now he keeps going ahead of me, so this video helped, I’ll keep a closer distance with my dogo. And also a good connection
How did you stop him from barking? My dog is blind and barks at certain people/dogs and especially loud noises outside Bc she gets scared.
I can't even tell you how much you have helped me with this. I gave up walking my yorkie as she pulls to strongly for me. I do have a huge fenced area for her where she likes to run circles around me but can't walk her. She is 11. She has been like this since our best buddy died 8 yrs ago. She always just followed him.She has the sweetest soul though.
Very informative I admire you Cesar how you handle your dogs keep them behaving and listening your command. You really earn their trust and respect and not all have that ability to control their dogs. I am dog lover too buy when I pull my dog she goes up and kisses me like saying just let me free doing my oen thing. But I learn your demonstration of least I will apply this to my new puppy who is so hyperactive.

What a dream! I would love to see you with some high energy dogs that are hyped for everything exept following humans. The ones that are so easily distractet while puberty or in general. I am a young dog walker and would love to learn even more about these beautiful creatures. Keep doing what you're doing! It's great!
Yeah! Like...my dog is sooo crazy pulling and getting agressive if people are walking by... She is a rescue dog and she was VERY dominant right from the start. We need help...

@@pavelescucristina4734 that is because the previous owner wasn’t patient with the dog. Be patient and correct your fur friend then give them props when you get their attention back to you.
Every time you take your fur friend for a walk bring treats as well. Give them a little “pull” enough to get their reaction then give them treats. Also when it gets aggressive seeing another dog, pull yours close to you and walk in circles until she gets her excitement down a little and walk again. Patience and good energy and some treats sometimes.
I am still learning and I’ve owned dogs since I was 8. Although it’s my first time owning a husky and I’m learning more and more each day. He got better.

Oh my gosh! I needed this for my pups! Just rescued one about two months ago younger than I am use to with no training at all! Four training classes still nightmare to walk super reactive ! I tried this information and only had a little bit of trouble! I was afraid I would have to surrender him behavior was so bad! I am going to work on these steps...with a leash I had on a harness! Now I know!
I have never see Cesar walk a dog when it's time to poop. I would like to see a video on how to walk a dog for that.
You take the dog to the area you want them to go, and don't do anything with the dog until they go. You make it clear to the dog it's not play time.
Satish, I just learned that dogs sniff the ground in order to poop in a north south orientation (Zoology 2014).

You have to find a good trainer. My dog was like That as well. My Trainer only needed 5 min and now I can walk him like Caesar. I had to change 3 dog schools until I found the one that actually could handle my dog.
@@Shiyay Mind sharing what technique they used to get your dog to stop pulling? I plan to hire a trainer but everyone has such drastically diff methods it's so hard to know what's better.
Thank you for explaining the positions of the leash. We have used a harness and yes, we get the pulling when we walk Marlee. I have one of your leashes ordered and I am eager to use it. I sure wish we had found your videos when we got Marlee as a puppy. She will be two years old on the 26th of this month and I am confident we can make the changes necessary to have a calmer and happier dog. She is very smart and has already caught on to the “Tsht” sound and has stopped barking excitedly when there is a knock at the front door. I just had to be trained to be the pack leader. Thank you Caesar! I took my dog walking this morning on a one hour walk and it was terrible. She pulled me the entire walk. I came home and watched 3 of your videos about walking the dog and how to use the leash. I just got back from a one hour walk for the 2nd time today with her. This time I did not use her harness. I only used the leash, placing it high around her neck, like you showed on the videos. I treated her with snacks, when I told her to sit down then to get up and start back walking, each time she obeyed me. She didn't pull and never got in front of me as if she was walking me, like before. This was the best walk we ever had. I'm so grateful for your training and your videos! She walked next to me the whole time, with her head up, looking straight ahead, staying focused, even when we passed people and other dogs. I'm truly grateful, and I'll be walking her more often now.
I would like to tell you how much I love this video! When you were walking Sophia with the leash around her neck. The other dogs were running alongside of you and you had to stop them. I laughed out loud to myself! Because the dogs appeared to be saying, "me turn, my turn, I want to be next with the leash around my neck."

I have one of this leashes. Two problems I've faced: (1) leash always go down: (2) my dog pulls a lot when sees another dog or children.
Leash goes down because the dog is probably pulling and you’re not holding the leash at the right angle. To prevent it from falling, the dog should be right by your side with the leash angled higher. Keep it short so they stay by you

When they pull. You correct that. Thats bad manners. You stop..allow them to relax. Then continue.
If you have e a slip leash with a stop , you can set the leash high up behind the ears. The leash can be slack but it stays in the proper position.
While I appreciate all of your training tips, I think this would have been more helpful with a dog who isn’t used to the leash.
I’m just guessing that these dogs have all ready been leash trained.
