When I hiked in '22, I camped in the park on the north side of Laguna and the wind was crazy. I messaged my weather support guy (a friend who's a climatologist) and he said to get off trail the next day because a winter storm was coming in. I did, but the other hikers staying there continued on. The next night they got hit with blasting wind and ice on the ridge, their tents got shredded and they had to hit the button. The socal sections are no joke.
There is nothing wrong with having an expectation for paid services and being thankful for having protection from the elements. It’s all about balance. Thanks for taking us along in your journey. You are awesome!
My $0.02: That little rant was right on point for a through hiker with limited funds. And, your acknowledging the value of having found the a place out of the storm was on point as well. I don’t see the conflict of expressing both points as you’re talking about two different things.
I appreciate your honesty and details on the hotel room (so we know NOT to stay there!!) - but for sure better than staying in the freezing snow. Also - you are so funny! Enjoying your videos! Keep being YOU! -- Chica
Please keep it real! That's what you're thinking and showing the problems that are encountered along the way shows the viewers the aspects of what thru hiking is all about. I personally am so skeptical when there are videos where people never show rainy days, cuts and bruises, and just plain down days. I detest social media because like i tell my kid and wife "nobody ever takes pictures of themselves doing their taxes, washing their dishes or waiting in the dentist office" and everybody does those things too.
Your reflection was perfection. The expectation that comes with a $140 "motel room" is basic services of warmth, water, working toilets, clean sheets, and a safe space; laundry facilities is a plus and a pool would be a luxury on a hot day. The motel company did not deliver, how does that happen in a tourist town (?), but the situation was so much better than a tent in the snow with your meager summer hiking gear. Stay safe and enjoy the rest of the hike, you'll laugh about this in the future.
Julianne - I think expectations play a part in your initial reactions. You knew you had a motel room.. with motel rooms, the heaters work, you have wi-fi, you don't have to build your own fire, you have comfortable beds, etc. I think most people would have had your same feelings. One thing I enjoy about your videos is the fact that you are real, what you see is what you get. You and Li'l Chap are doing great, especially for a FL gal who definitely isn't used to snow and those temps and wind chills. Weather is crazy the last couple of years. Hang in there. Take care. Stay warm and safe. See you tomorrow.
Adversity does not develop character, it only reveals it. Frustration helps you keep perspective. One sure thing about the truth, it never changes and you never have to remember what you said! We are enjoying the journey and thank you again for keeping us with you!
Sometimes you have to voice your frustration and feelings to process them to move forward. So don't feel like you have to hide that part of your journey. I can't imagine the roller coster of emotions that comes with a thru hike. Alot of people think they know how you should handle it sitting back on the couch. But you're the one doing the things! And I love seeing the awesome moments, as well as the challenges.
Yep, there will be places where the lodging, restaurants, groceries, etc will feel like you're being price gouged. These are small communities that depend on a short season to make their revenue for the year to stay in business. I'm glad that you shared your frustration and then your realization on what your $$$$ was providing. Safety, warmth, and some comforts during a not so comfortable time outdoors. I'm enjoying your videos!! 👍
That Lodge is famous for delivering a less-than-positive experience. So don't feel that you are alone in your perceived value. Just know that the expense issue won't go away. However you will likely find other places, services, people more inviting and rewarding for the most part. When I'm struggling I just say to myself, "First World Problems" and feel lucky to be able to spend all day walking in expensive clothes, carrying high-end gear, sleeping in an elite shelter and sleep system, soaking in nature, and pushing my limits. Keep on truckin'
I followed you on the AT and the reason is your honesty. I wouldn't change that. Ignore the complainers. $140, is expensive for what you got, but you were protected, and that's all. Enjoy, and please, continue to keep it real
Places like that really take advantage of people. I would definitely leave feedback on that place so others know what to expect. We want what really happens on the hike. Happy 👣 trails🌻
Girl, please, you are so not spoiled! I totally understand what you are saying! It’s not that you aren’t grateful for having a place to stay safe and warm - it’s that for $140 you had expectations (that were reasonable) and they weren’t met! I also agree it is better than being out in the snow - but if it was $70 for the two of y’all to split - you prob would have felt a little better about it - but even then, you still have chores and limited chances to do them and this place was not meeting the needs! Great hand washing skills though! ❤🙏🏻 keep on keeping on! Y’all are doing great!
Thank you for staying true to yourself on how you feel about anything on the trail. I like watching your videos for that reason. I followed you on the AT as well. I am closely following you on your PCT adventure now since the AT looks like it will take years before we can think about hiking the southern sections of the trail because of Hurricane Helene. My husband and I planned on hiking that particular trail. Now with possibly having to switch it up to the PCT, your videos are helping me get a full understanding of what to expect. I am so happy that you have been able to hike both trails. Cheers to your accomplishments!! 🎉
Juliane I am a person who is very thankful, but I would have been ticked also. This is California, not some third world country. The look on your face scrubbing the cloths is priceless.🤭
I gotta say I always look forward to you saying something with a "right der" attached at the end. Always makes me smile! I'm starting NOBO in a few days. Have a great hike!
It's all a matter of perspective, right? And you seemed to find yours, given your situation. I really appreciate the "realness" and candor you provide in your videos. Keep being you! ☮❤🤝
I'm glad you spoke out about the poor quality of the room. It's a good reality check. That said, I'd absolutely pay $140 to get out of the elements. In a heartbeat. Like zero hesitation. ZERO...
RR, you've learned an important lesson, which is sometimes it's better to hike through weather. You burn calories to stay warm, it occupies the day, and, AND, assuming you have the right gear, you can be completely secure and cozy at the end of the day. I'm referring of course to not only the Sierra but also the N Cascades. Caveat: obviously not a full blown winter blizzard, but 3-6" from a late spring storm around Forrester or Muir? Seems to happen every year for early hikers
Please tell it like it is. I’ve watched you all through your AT hike and you are not a negative person. I love your honesty - there are going to be good days and bad days. There are going to be great places you stay, at reasonable rates, and there are going to be places like today. We want to know everything about the hike - the tough days, the good ones, the weather, the lodging, the food - everything and honestly. If I want things sugar coated, I’ll watch a Hallmark movie.😂
P.S. You are who you are and that is what I like about your channel. You keep it real and you let your subscribers keep it real...... i.e., remember my comments about thru hikers vs. weekenders vs. day hikers to your Q&A, you didn't block me..... lol....Have fun Road Runner and stay true to yourself and your REAL subscribers will keep loving you for it. Badaboom Badabam.........lol....... Oh, and Snow River Crossin.....!
You had every right to grump about that room at that price! Sheesh! But as you said…glad you were in out of the weather…even if it was a budget buster. Hiking the PCT is like being in a crazy, real life Wild West movie!!! Yee-haw!!! But seriously…be safe out there RR!!!❤
I've never had a bad thought about anything you were talking about. I'd of been the same. Luckily it was split..oh the first washing machines were made in 1850s. Most people couldn't afford them. I never had an automatic one till 1985. It was a wringer washer. They worked really good washing too, because it wasn't timed. Blessings and safe trails ❤
I love that you keep it real. And you can vent to me all day it’s could to accept Your disappointment vent it and move on. people that complain about being spoiled aren’t hikers just sayin.
Aye.the good old days. Doing laundry by hand. lol. Seriously those days were not that good. I like my central heating & air and indoor plumbing. I find you to be real and your frustration was real. Seems to me you were taken advantage of to me. I love your videos and you definitely are not overly negative, just real. Keep being real!!!
I'm glad you got out of the weather. I would have been upset with the cost. Some businesses are just taking advantage of people. $70 would have been more like it. Hopefully, the wood stove provided some extra drying heat. Better days ahead. Hike~~On~~>
Snow looks pretty but this Floridian enjoys the warmth. The motel will be one of the many sticker shocks encountered on the PCT. Big difference from the AT. Thanks for sharing the good, the bad and the ugly.
I would have to be in your weather situation before I would stay at that accommodation again. I hope to PCT again and hope to walk right on by that lodge.
Prices for motel rooms have been rising greatly, especially since 2020. Motel prices in remote resort and vacation towns are even higher, and when there's almost no competition, as is the case on Mount Laguna, you're going to see extra high prices. If this had been a really nice place, you could have been seeing prices over $300. I know, it sucks.
For $140 you should at least get a washer and dryer, I guess For the feel of a rustic cabin you make your own heat ,but not when it's called a hotel, well at least it is a nice one, it's clean, no holes, and the bed looks good. Quite the surprise to see the snow after all the sun yesterday walking through what looks like a desert and some places green grass by a stream. What is your altitude ?
I just discovered your quite interesting vlog of the journey and so I'm a new subscriber. I'm looking forward to following your trek. And btw, you're right all around - right to appreciate that having the room is a blessing, and also right that you were charged an excessive amount for such a basic crash pad. Wishing you wonderfully fullfilling expedition with the absolute minimum of difficulties beyond the strain of the endless and endlessly challenging path.
Ugh, I wouldn't like to pay for a hotel with no heat either! Though I always hang dry all of my clothing 🥴 Sure wouldn't be convenient on the trail though when you have very limited time. Hope it works out!
Last year I stayed in that same room. It was $40 LESS AND the heater worked. The pilot light might have gone out. The Burnt Ranchero Campground down the road had 5G reception as I remember uploading a bunch of videos there while charging my devices. BTW, when you get to Hikertown, they charge double for a “cabin” with electricity. The snow is very pretty though.
It's not wrong calling it like it is its true its high price a few of us would think the same way its called life expressing our thoughts its all good yall safe from outside 😊 p.s stop falling on trail lol yall be good see you in the next video ❤❤
Yeah, that place sucks, and the PCT do be like that sometimes. But you were out of the weather, so there’s that. I hate to say it but this probably won’t be the worst place you stay, and it won’t be the most expensive. Hike on!
Wow, I’m seriously going to have to look at my budget. 😮 $140 for that room with no wash facilities, and I thought UK was expensive 😮 Really enjoying your videos though, thank you so much for sharing especially the “off trail” footage as it’s something rarely seen on thru hike TH-cam’s
I don't blame you on the room. I was a bit shocked when you said it was $140. I was actually surprised that the stovepipe had enough draw not to smoke out the entire room.
I stayed in a Fairfield 3 days ago that cost $115. Huge king bed, hair dryer, free coffee and breakfast, free wifi, air conditioning, plus big shower and nice couch. I’m biased against California. I would never live there again.
You’d think $hitty hotel rooms in the mountains would be cheaper right? 😂😂. Just like petrol prices they are more! They take advantage of the lack of options. The rest of Cali and Oregon won’t get better. Choose your zeros carefully! 😢. Enjoying your videos.
Hey there RoadRunner ....... you look just so good doin' that laundry with that orange 5-gal bucket ....... just SO good ....... like that clip belongs in The Trek monthly center fold-out from the Pacific Crest Trail ... LIVE .... direct from snowy Mt Laguna with very fresh snow ........ hellooooo!
Unfortunately my home state ain’t cheap, and trail towns near the PCT get to charge whatever people will pay because there aren’t that many that are close. But even to me I think you should have got more than the bare essentials. It was basically a rip off and there’s nothing wrong with saying so.
I hated that place last year .. walked into an old Smoke Choking + mildew smelling room .. multiple old guys at the front , seemed used to my complaints.. they said there's no refunds .. so I left the key .. and bailed .. walked 10 miles in the snowy slush .. just because I was pissed off after having walked about 10 to get there .. needless to say that my feet got hurt from the wet ice slush, and then my hike ended a few days after that
The motel is over priced for what was provided. Did you do any research before booking? Look at reviews ? I always do some checking on what's provided before booking. Heating is something I would have expected, not just a wood fire. Did the room heater eventually give out some heat ?
I don’t think you should feel the need to explain your feelings. You definitely got the protection you needed, from the elements, but it is a steep price. Peace of mind is everything though. Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
That motel probably gave you a glimpse into your PCT future. I live I. The Sierra, not supper about MT Laguna, but prices are jacked in many areas. Sometimes it is because it’s. Popular tourist population and other times it is just because the costs to get supplies to their area is higher. I too would be disappointed with those accommodations for that price.
Reflecting on and re-examining a given situation shows class and character. Enjoying your vids.
I will always appreciate honesty over forced positivity.

You go girl!! Love your honesty and realness! I look forward to your vlogs every day. Safe travels; it will be ugly out there.
Do not beat yourself up! I agree with what your expectations are for 140.00!
Thanks for sharing the good and the bad . With my future PCT Hike this is good stuff😊 and remember this is your hike we are just in for the ride.
You were totally justified to complain about the room. The cost seems ridiculous for what you got. I am enjoying your hike from my couch!❤
I love how you are real about your experiences!!! You are doing an amazing job - just keep being you!!!
Your right, better that hotel room in that weather than being in your tent/sleeping bag...
You are exhausted, you are cold and I think your reaction was absolutely acceptable.
It's all a matter of perspective, right? And you seemed to find yours, given your situation. I really appreciate the "realness" and candor you provide in your videos. Keep being you! ☮❤🤝

Haha! That face/look while doing your bucket laundry! Priceless!! ;p At least you're both inside and out of the elements for now.
I agree.
I agreed with you 100% about your "complaints." All reasonable. Getting out of the harsh winter weather made it worth it! Im glad you were sheltered.
Love your vids and banter. Keep being yourself.
That laundry scene is so funny....! Lol.....! I'm not hating.....! Hilarious 😂

So close to sunny San Diego with its nice beaches and palm trees etc. California has so many different geologies and climates.
I love that you keep it real. And you can vent to me all day it’s could to accept
Your disappointment vent it and move on. people that complain about being spoiled aren’t hikers just sayin.

A little late but best of luck with your journey. I look forward to following your ups and downs.
thats a good way to sell more firewood
I'm dying to know what they charged for the firewood.....
@@sagittarius3363 normally I think campgrounds charge $5 for a small bundle.......BUT I bet they are charging more
@@superdave0002 I should have watched Lil'Chap's video before I asked. I believe he said $8 for the wood.
Snow looks pretty but this Floridian enjoys the warmth. The motel will be one of the many sticker shocks encountered on the PCT. Big difference from the AT. Thanks for sharing the good, the bad and the ugly.
Don't blame you for the frustration. I'd be disappointed too. The snow was very pretty
My guess is your Skygoat was worth the weight 😉 Glad you all were safe!

“I’m trying this whole social thing” best comment ever!
Truth is best. People who plan to hike a long-distance hike need to know what to expect.
No explanation necessary, be you & do your deal.
That's expensive for me as a Californian. I totally get being bummed about the hotel room cost and for what the room actually is.

I have the same Montbell jacket. I love it but haven’t used it on the PCT - how do you like for PCT snow and hiking?
Geez, snow on the PCT is like the last thing you think you will see.
As a west coast person, the price seems about right for a small “resort” town. The only thing unacceptable is that lack of heat.
Omg $140 for that is unacceptable 😢 stay safe out there yall 🥾🥾
Unfortunately my home state ain’t cheap, and trail towns near the PCT get to charge whatever people will pay because there aren’t that many that are close. But even to me I think you should have got more than the bare essentials. It was basically a rip off and there’s nothing wrong with saying so.
140 is a LOT to spend on a crappy hotel room, but that's what you get in the middle of nowhere.
Did the office not respond about the heater?
When life gives you lemons, get back on trail and just go.
hahahaha! That pissed off look on your face doing bucket washing!!!
For me if the room had wifi I could overlook some of the other things, funny how much we use wifi these days.
