Not strange at all, it's classic plantar fasciitis and you need to stretch the hell out of it prior to walking in the morning and at the end of your day!!!

Love the pictures of Mayor Max.
There is a lot of fear mongering especially with the Sierras and San Jacinto. You had the right approach in evaluating the conditions yourself as well as consulting with an experienced hiker who cleared the area. Stay strong. You've got this.

Since you guys have completed the AT...you can do this...I followed 3 PCT thru hikers last year and they did it..remember with the altitude you may get altitude sickness...the snow is a challenge but doable...no worse then the White Mountains, and Katahdin...alot of hikers embellish the truth,,,go for it!!!

My advice is to get a brace cause even though it doesn't hurt when you walk now, it may get to the point where there is pain when you walk. At least that was my experience on the AT and then I hit a point where I couldn't walk at all. Take extra care so it doesn't get to the point of being unwalkable.

Oh, I almost forgot. You had mentioned Heard Hiker a few videos ago and I was curious as to whether you know how he is doing. The last video he posted was when he was travelling from Mike's Place to PVC. He was having a lot of heat and water issues. That was over a week ago and he had been pretty consistent with his vlogs. Just curious and concerned. Thank you. :)

Sounds like plantar fasciitis. Roll with a cork ball at the end of every day and every morning.

  • @maxcollins5717

When the pain is at first standing it is typically plantar fascitis. More rolling with a ball on your foot. Last year to did the AT and treated hikers along my way for 117 days.

Just my 2 cents but it’s up to the individual hiker what they do. If people skip it because it’s sketchy and potentially dangerous that’s totally fine. I would say that it’s always at your own risk but it’s important to think of those that would then have to rescue someone because they made a bad decision. I hope that makes sense and I’m comfortable saying you are a sensible person and I’m sure will only do what keeps you safe. Excited for the next few days and happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️

@jackclay3208 My bad, my memory leaves a lot to be desired. The next year [ I think ] a tru hiker called smiles, last name Kirby. They call her Daisy. She weighs 317 pounds stands 6 feet tall she did the triple crown summited san Jacinto peak along with mount Whitney. over 15,000 feet. Hell of a girl.
I think she was about 20 years old, oh she also did the Florida Traill and more. the only reason she stopped hiking was because of her fathers poor health. When smiles summited san Jacinto the snow at the top was even with marker that
    said elevation 10,834 feet.
She did the AT, then PCT and CDT in that order. She's unbelievable when she summited Mount Whitney she wasn't even
    breathing hard!!!!

I know San Jacinto Peak is a side trail but I hope you decide to summit it. Your friend mentioned micro spikes, when Dixie summited
the peak it was a high snow year and she used much larger spikes. I don't think she used crampons, she thought about it, but she did
use larger spikes, she did not use micro spikes if my memory serves me right.

If it hurts on the sole of the foot when you just start walking or putting weight on it, it could be plantar fasciitis. If you are causing it pain, you are re-aggravating it and slowing down or preventing healing. You can do calf stretches in bed before you get up to keep it from hurting when you get up - these stretches can help promote healing.

I've been having a similar problem with my foot! I wake up in the morning, and my left foot hurts to walk on it, but then after a while it's OK again. Weird. I hope yours is feeling better now.
I'm assuming you're not dead, and that you have successfully traversed San Jacinto. I watched a couple of PCT hikes last year, and they had A LOT of snow! I think they went around, had no choice really. They're going back to fill in snow and fire areas later this season. Seems odd that there's both snow and fire fill ins to do, but that's the PCT for ya! I hope you don't have any fires.

    A few thoughts:
    1. Make sure you check with San Jac Jon. He lives there in town, has a website and a TH-cam channel. He is the expert on San Jacinto conditions and hikes up every couple of days to report on it.
    2. Last year there was a *ton* of snow on Mt. San Jacinto. It was a slog, and a challenge, but I never felt I was in danger. If I had skipped it I would have been disappointed to miss out on the experience (and scenery), but only you can decide what you’re comfortable with.
    3. If you haven’t already (and are still in town) make sure to hit the coffee shop right in the center of town on the roundabout. Awesome cold brew and baked goods - one of the best coffee shops on the entire PCT!
    4. You already bought a new ice axe so it may not matter at this point, but did you confirm that your shipped ice axe actually got lost in the mail? Because that hallway/shipped box pile at PVC is notoriously unmanaged and disorganized, and boxes have been known to walk off on their own, because PVC does absolutely nothing to take care of boxes getting sent there other than to dump them in that pile, after which it becomes a free-for-all.

Usually planter is related too tight calves which might seem crazy because you are a dancer, but if you google stretches try them you out… you might be surprised!
if you’re super tight on those stretches that’s most likely the problem… I had that exact issue and I’m super flexible with very strong calves so I was super surprised myself is why I share this. Hope it heals quick 😊

If the foot pain is in the sole, it may be plantar fasciitis. You can help it by each morning and evening pulling the toes back moderately for 10 sec, massaging the soles with your thumbs, and cooling the feet when you can. Ibuprofen also helps if needed.

if you have a hot tub soak it on your Zero or in a tub with Epsom salts, try to stretch it a little and minimal walking. Couple days you will be good. Hiking shoes are very supportive and that’s why it doesn’t hurt when walking. You guys are going to need a 2nd breakfast that basket seems nice but not a lot of calories. Love Mayor Max! You guys look great together! Fireball needs that dress! She should buy it and mail it to someone to hold onto until until she gets home.

One thing I have learned from watching thru hiking videos on TH-cam for almost 10 years is that most hikers will look for any reason to skip a section, and if they can't find a reason, they will skip ahead anyway. Their minds are already made up to skip. They are just looking for a reason. Those fear mongering comments are just their way to justify their Yellow Blazing.

@@theyetti8811 Yeah there is so many doing it. It reminds me of one TH-camr I watched on the CDT a few years ago. It was the middle of summer in Colorado. When suddenly she filmed her hiking group in full panic mode, claiming that they just read comments that there was terrible snow conditions in the mountains, so they were going to turn around to hike back to the trailhead to hitchhike around it. They were in their shorts and it looked like the temperature was around 80ºF. Another TH-camr had hiked over that same pass almost a week before that, and not only was there zero snow but that hiker took a side trail to the top of a 14,000 foot peak and there was not even any patches of snow on the peak. The excuses people make to not actually hike the trail. 🤦‍♂
