Fun fact: Arsenal's first ever shirt was a Nottingham Forest shirt. Our first manager was a former Forest manager who scrounged up some freebies from his old club. Soon after, as we became the official club of the Woolwich Arsenal our kit reflected the military standards of the two regiments stationed there, red and white (home) and yellow and blue (away). The fact that our first shirt was red is probably why red and white became our immutable home colours where we don't always play in our correct colours for the away kit nowadays. Other than that, we probably have the easiest to explain origin story for our main nickname. Our others (The Arsenal or Bank of England FC) are maybe a little more opaque.
@@darthwiizius I didn't know this very interesting story about the Forest connection. Thank you so much for sharing. Btw where does the Bank of England come from? I think I knew the story at one point
@@he_football
We were very rich in 1930s, we were the very first big modern club, we were champions in the 30s 5 times and we did it largely through money. The conspiracy theories tie in the building up of Highbury, government connections etc but in reality we were the first to realise the commercial benefits available from professionalisation. We were the first southern club to join the Football League, the first to join the professional ranks from the Southern League. Everyone else followed soon after and the age of posh public school teams collapsed under the weight of the full time professional players.
@@darthwiizius I always get that Bank of England story mixed up thinking it has something to do with Wenger in the early 2000s
@@he_football
I wish we was Bank of England FC during Wenger's reign. If Arsene had those resources we would have won everything. And we'd have played brilliant football too.
@@darthwiizius The Emirates debt really hurt Arsene
Wish pompey were added as we have one of the most well known nicknames in England 😢
If it's any consolation I have a video on Pompey's weird owners from the late 2000s early 2010s
notts county are the oldest club not Forest
I forgot they got promoted back to League 2
Notts County are also the reason Juventus play in black and white stripes.
@@joannedj1 That one I knew
Not gonna lie, with the jokes you packed into the first few minutes, I was expecting more when you got to Fulham!
@@Eric_Hunt194 Yeah Fulham was pretty weak. Didn't have much inspiration for that one
Don't forget the gas,and obviously bristol city the💩
Can't wait for the City fans to find this comment
Saw this and immediately thought, "was it Bristol that first had a bus that ran on methane?"
😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂 even I can laugh about the banter which has been missing for along time as we don't play each other anymore.
My man's not British/English, but his humour is definitely pure BRITISH HUMOUR.
I watched a lot of Top Gear 😂
Great video but ONE CORRECTION: its Notts County who are the oldest football club, not Notts Forest.
I forgot they got promoted back. I'm glad you liked the video
a few others. Middlesbrough are the Boro" (as are Scarborough and Stevenage Borough) but used to be the "Ayresome Angels", after their old ground Ayresome Park and the local hospital, next door. Morecambe are the "shrimps", potted shrimps being a local delicacy in Morecambe Bay. Lancaster City are the "Dolly Blues" a reference to the colour of their shirts. Darlington are the railwaymen, the Stockton to Darlington railway being the first passenger railway in the world.
Thanm you for mentioning these ones, there were so many I was bound to miss some interesting ones
You can buy Everton mints I got some once but being a reds supporter I don't buy them as a rule, I'm an Aussie but my mum is from st Helens Merseyside, been to Anfield a number of times but I've only been to the UK twice and not for ages,
I'd love to try some Everton mints
QPR are known as the R’s or the Super Hoops 🔵⚪️🔵⚪️🔵⚪️
I've always wondered is there a connection between the English QPR and Scottish Queens Park
Great video - just wanted to add that a tradition at Everton is a young girl dresses up as "the toffee lady" (based on the owner of the toffee shop you mentioned) and she goes round the ground throwing toffees to the fans of both teams
Glad you liked the video and thanks for sharing this nice fact. I saw the toffee girl when I was searching for the pictures during my edit but had already recorded everything and I'm rather lazy :))
@@he_football completely understandable sir
i see you didint attempt to find an explanation for POMPEY.
I just assumed it was a shortened version of Portsmouth
We’re cooking with this one
I loved your video on the best performance of every scottish team in Europe
why wasn't Villa or the 2 mancs sides mentioned?
I thought they would be too well known
Reading mentioned let's gooooo
@@MidgeCat 🍪🍪🍪
Brighton the Seagulls or the Albion
I didn't feature them because I didn't find enough of an interesting backstory
I gaffawed so much, a hat tip to you my friend
Very glad you liked the video
Disappointed not to see Leyton Orient featured. The nickname of the Os is probably from the first letter of Orient, which is quite dull, but an early kit in the 1890s was red with a big letter O on the back, which isn't dull.
@@luxford60 When I was researching the video I saw that their nickname was the Os and thought oh it's just their first letter and didn't look further into it. Do you know the backstory of those early kits? Why did they have an O on the back?
@@he_football I don't think anybody knows why they had the O on the back. It probably was an O for Orient as I can't think of any other reason for it being there. There may be a meeting minute somewhere in an archive somewhere saying why they bought them, but whether anybody has read those minutes in the last 130 is another matter.
@@luxford60 Still, thanks for sharing this nickname
Where is Hull City? The Tigers?
I thought they only had that name because of their badge. Is there more to that story?
@@he_football Their kit is black and amber.
I wanted to include ones with more of a backstory to them or else the video would have been 2 hours long
The accent sounds Indian and Spanish
Good spot. I am a Spaniard from New Delhi 😂
@@he_footballproper hybrid. 50% Spanish and 50% Indian . And then you speak fluent English language. You sound very , very unique
@@patrickpatel5527 I'm not actually haha. I'm from eastern europe. But can you imagine indian and spanish cuisine mixed together?
😀
Tottenham like to think their nickname is the Lilywhites but they stole that idea, as well as club colours from the Invincibles of Preston North End.
I should of watched the video before commenting. Glad to see you know your history.
I was just going to say that I mentioned that 😂😂
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
I like Salford City nicknames, Ammies,Doppelgangers and The Red/White Elephants! 😊
@@Gastradamus I didn't know about them. What's their backstory?
I thought that Malcolm Alison change the kit and the name of Crysal Palace to the Eagles so he could tell the players they could rise above everything.
I just read his story after seeing your comment and he did have a hand in that. Such an interesting character, thanks for mentioning him
Nice background music 🎶. Good video thank you ☮
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it
2:34 unironically toffees are scarier than the Tiger tank
Tooth decay is no joking matter 😂
City being the bantam version of Chelsea is so true
Yesss
We are wolves 🐺🇬🇧
It was a bit too easy to include in the video
Great video mate! Very well done and funny!
Thank you. So glad you enjoyed it
What about the posh the best nickname in the country
I like monkey hangers better
They did feature in the video. At 25:55 to be precise.
Actually can't believe the like ratio for this video; should be much higher. Excellent job and your humour is top notch!
I am so glad you liked the video and found it funny. Believe me after my last 5 or so videos completely bombed I am happy with whatever I can get
Perhaps due to basic errors like saying Nottm Forest are the oldest league club, when it`s actually Notts County?
He got most of it right though, and his humour is good.
@@georgerubypoppy1063 LOL yes. Perhaps most of the 6,000 views are the Notts County crowd, though.
Burnley - Turfites
I didn't know about that one. I only found the Clarets for Burnley
@@he_football aye it's an old one can still find it on club badge sellers around Turf moor stadium
@@BURNLEY87 Thank you for mentioning it
