    Hats off, my friend. Your focus on this is making the manufacturers aware of our interest in better performance and quality. You've been a leader on this. Today I was able to buy a Napa Platinum for my Chevy v8 for 8.99 which is a killer price for such a terrific filter. Happy to see that STP is getting more competitive. Prices for the good stuff will moderate if the public demands it.

    I'm high impressed with the revision of some of the STP products and a step up from the plastic E-CORE. Premium Guard, Hastings/Baldwin are very good filters.

    I have used the blue and gold STP filters on several occasions when I couldn't find a WIX. I am impressed, I didn't realize they were so well made, I definitely would consider the gold or silver.

    The old blue STP filter boxes used to say catches 93% of particles. XL says 99%. That's why I always got the XL.

    • @justhere4721
      @justhere4721 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That percentage depends on the particle size. Filters give a number based on the micron size they tested. That 99% might be on a bigger micron size. It maybe catching more bigger particles, but its letting through more smaller ones.

    A lot of high volume shops/quick lubes buy the stp filters in bulk. They come without boxes & get stocked on the shelves & sometimes, depending on clientele, sit for long periods of time. The plastic covering protects the raw metal from rust & the inside of the filter from dust & debris.

      I own a 22 Chevy 2500hd gas 6.6 LT8…. Dropped at dealer for service and lube and they stuck the blue STP filter and AC Delco synthetic 5w30 in truck! I was mad no AC Delco with a 70k truck and 18k miles. They said it meets GM quality and use on many vehicles at dealership???

    Currently using the low end STP filter and am impressed. 3500 miles and very clean dipstick checks.
    Have a mid level STP filter and full synthetic oil for the next oil change at 4000 miles on the conventional oil.

      Why would you use a crappy oil filter on a new car? Senseless. Since you paid a lot of money for a new car. U can use synthetic oil to break in a car. Been building engines for years. By quality, get the results

    This exact filter fits my Subaru 3.6 engine, and have the STP XL filter on it now. When I last went to AutoZone, I noticed that some XL's have the same lipped gasket and 5 inlet holes, but some of the other XL's have the same base plate and gasket as the standard blue filter shown in this video. The OEM Subaru filter has the 5 inlet holes and gasket lip, and the STP is the only aftermarket filter I can find that looks identical, but I'm not sure if they're phasing out the 5 inlet holes for the 2808 filter in favor of the 8, or if they have more than one design for the same filter. I've also noticed the M1-104 filters (same application) have varying gaskets and base plates from one filter to the next.

    Watch ur videos alot, I love k&n gold filters as well for the 1 inch flange nut. Only down fall is people use the damn nut 2 put it on, so when u go 2 remove it usually strips even with 6 point socket. Kinda of a gimic. Main purpose is for the wire tied down required at many drag strips and certain race classes

    Tearing those oil filters apart to figure out which one best removes harmful particles from the engine oil looks like a lot of fun, but I think you're trying to solve that oil particle contamination problem the wrong way. Instead of figuring out which oil filter does the best job, it would be best to focus on what can be done to reduce the number of particles that get into the oil. Most of those abrasive particles are simple dirt and dust that sneaks in through the air intake. If you really want clean oil, use a good AIR filter and seal up any vacuum leaks, even the tiny ones (i.e., those old seals on the dipsticks of foreign cars. The crankcase vacuum on some of the German cars is so strong I've heard you can take out the oil drain plug while the engine is running, and it won't leak oil.) And, to minimize any soot/carbon contamination in the oil, make sure your engine is not running rich. Do whatever it takes to get the fuel trims close to zero - new plugs, fuel injectors, or whatever it needs.

    For STP, some of the older boxes had efficiencies on them if I remember right. The basic filter is only 92% efficient at most, albeit for an economy filter that might be right around where it should be.

    I have a question about the K&N center tube that you showed at 11:00 minutes. That slit cut center tube style...do they have cuts facing both directions like the Mobil 1 oil filter? If so, I believe that's why it's shown in testing that Mobil 1 had much slower flow. I was wondering because while K&N blew you way how shiny it was if it's not designed for great flow either....than oh well. Lol

  • @micahap1559

    My thoughts on a good filter mainly focus on media, surface area, construction and bypass. Many things that so many are concerned about like metal end caps and the structural center core are not necessary. There are plastics and other materials that work fine and stand up to heat and pressure. You expect the filter medial to hold up right? Its not Metal either! Metal is fine but definitely not a necessity. As far as the end caps your metal is probably not the best material and harder to seal and has less adhesion, especially the slick shiny ones that you like. Essentially it depends on the adhesive quality.

      I have also used the least expensive filters any brand but I change the filter and oil no more that 5 months. However, I bought about 6 on sale BOSCH LONG DISTANCE PLUS filters for just $5 normally $15 at Wally world. Using Super Tech 5W 30 synthetic at 6000 miles I changed the oil and filter. Mistake?? Maybe. Why? The oil was still very clear and honey colored. I think I could have gone another 3 to 5 thousand miles. This was not normal. Most of the 6000 miles were highway but that BOSCH filter Distance Plus is the best! Heavy filter. Lots of media inside. If you do not mind paying more get this filter! Cheers!

    just thinking here... The NEW walmart supertech filter is about 3 dollars but doesn't have a bypass valve anymore. However, the STP basic filter is about 5 dollars and does have the bypass valve. I think the additional 2 dollars is worth the added cost on cold morning starts.

    • @stevensevek6151
      @stevensevek6151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whether or not a filter has a bypass valve is determined by the application. If a particular Application does not call for a bypass valve it may not have one but it may have one of the same filter is used in another application that requires it. Again the bypass valve inclusion is vehicle specific although can be present even though not needed.

    Efficiency is not the whole reason we're here. Flow rate needs to be considered as well. I understand that the Purolator Boss has a lower flow rate. The high end STP has the same polymer backing on the media so if that's what causes the low flow rate in the Boss, then I would avoid it.

    Ever think about the fact that you should be putting perfectly clean oil into your engine and hopefully your engine is not disintergrating. ...now IF you engine DOES begin to disintegrate shedding metal fragments? Is better oil filtration REALLY going to save anyone? LOL I sincerely DOUBT that! My phiosphy is to change the filter EVERY oil change and to change oil earlier not later .....therefore I use lower tier oil and filter so long as they meet OEM standards. SOME guys apparently love to buy supposedly ultra premium oil and filters paying a lot of extra money and then their philosphy is to run 10,000 miles etc between oil changes...I do NOT trust that these premium oils and filters are truly so much better....so I just use more economical and then change at 5k miles.....Personally I feel like I am treating my cars better than the dudes running the expensive components longer

      Mobil One oil filters are $10.00 at Walmart. You can use the oil of your choice. Check your auto manual or Google the correct weight of oil your auto requires. The W after the first number stands for winter. The lower the number like 0w or 5w flows better in the cold.

    • @MichaelWebber
      @MichaelWebber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      5,000 miles is (probably) the limit with the XL if you use conventional oil, because the controlling "longevity factor" isn't the durability of the filter material, but the length of time before the filter loads up with sludge and sludge like byproducts - and conventional oil breaks down a lot more and a lot faster than full synthetic.
      On the other hand, if you use full synthetic with the base 5,000 filter you are still stuck with the 5,000 mile limit, because it's not the dirt from oil breakdown that uses up the filter, it's the flow of the oil itself breaking down the fibers.
      And then of course you've gotta follow your owner's manual on oil change intervals if you still have the bumper to bumper or power train warranties still in effect.
      I don't even trust 7,500 or 10,000 owner's manual oil change intervals. First, there are big loopholes that kick a lot of drivers down into the "severe service" oil change interval; second I think the modern long intervals give priority to conserving resources not to engine protection; and third I think most car makers assume the average engine life only has to be 100,000 miles - for the first owner.

    I dont know why I'm barely watching this video but I was really impressed by your presentation. I have dissected an STP Maximum Life S2808ML as well when they barely came out and they were built differently than these newer ones. I like the Purolator Boss for a number of reasons but recently, I have noticed that the louver type of holes on the center tube have not been manufactured correctly and they are barely open, meaning the oil will not flow as efficiently and the oil pressure will increase leading the oil to by pass unfiltered oil, which is a serious problem. This is rather disappointing to me because the Purolator Boss is perfect in my opinion, but it is those poorly manufactured louvers that have me embittered. I may consider this my new favorite filter until Purolator addresses their issues with the center tubes across all their lineup from the Classic, One, and Boss. With these STP oil filters, the center tubes have wide open holes which I like for a guaranteed oil flow without restrictions. I only buy the top tier oil filters and pair it with full synthetic oil. Excellent video.

      Motorcraft is made by Purolator to Ford specs, so its basically a medium grade Purolator filter (not the BOSS). I use Purolator on my F150 and on my Toyota Camry

      Eric Maeder yes I’m a service tech in NJ and do a minimum of 700 mi a week, motor is still silky smooth but may have to retire it due to rusty frame near passenger front control arm. My rebuilt alternator and water pump have way more miles than the original ford parts. As for suspension, buy the best replacement you can get.

    For after market filters, It all boils down to you get what you pay for!!! If you pay $15.00 for a filter your getting the best constructed and performing filter on the market. If you pay $3.00 your getting something that meets minimum standards. If you buy an OEM filter, your probably getting a half decent filter. Seeing as quite a few brand new cars are leased these days, that means the the car companies own the car, so its in their financial interest to use a half decent filter. I buy used cars and use OEM or Purolator BOSS

      Go with Royal Purple full synthetic oil filters. Amazon sells them for around $15.00. It’s only a couple of times a year you change the oil and filter so go with quality.

    I run 5 to 7500 miles on Fram and never a problem. I change my oil when my oil is 1/2 quart low or 7,500 miles on my trailblazer with 144,000 miles' with synthetic oil it was 1/2 quart low one time at 7,500... Did go to 10,000 once at 3/4 quart low, so I change at 6 to 7 k most of the time. Driving has a lot to do with it too. I never go more than 200 miles at one time ' so don't travel long distance much //

      Did you end up returning this made in China shit? If given the opportunity, we are determined to leave made in China (PRC) crap on the store shelf any time, any place. Car batteries, tires, and anything else we always inquire about the country of origin. We'll buy made in Mexico when USA , Japan, Germany are not on the list of country of origin options. Especially when WIX is made in USA and surprisingly the basic microgard is also made in USA.

    I will never use any STP filters. Tried one of the cheapo blue ones from Autozone. The $5.00 dollar oil cost me a $100 tow and repair bill.
    How ? I had changed my oil put the blue filter on. Of course put oil in my car (97 Grand Marquis ) drove my car a short oil change only 1,500 miles on the oil. I go to change my oil out and this cheap piece of junk oil filter. When I started to take the oil filter off. The filter just crushed in my hand. I tried driving a screw driver through it, the dam filter would not come off. Why? The O Ring on this piece of garbage oil filter had melted to the oil filter mounting plate. I had already drained my oil. I had to have it towed to my mechanic to get the oil filter scrapped off.
    I know people will say "You over tightened your oil filter" Nope.. Only a 1/4 of a turn after snugged the filter on.
    The filters are garbage.
    I use either a Bosch or a Wix oil filter.

      @pi1797 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @pi1797
      @pi1797 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @VikingChild I always do that. Been changing my own oil for 25 years plus.. Always coat the o ring with oil. These STP blue filters are garbage.

  • @fgsrdgstfgr
    @fgsrdgstfgr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Plastic cover? If it's boxed there will be no debris. 99% of people wipe oil on the gasket anyway. Simple marketing BS by STP. The 8 holes vs. 5 holes is even more BS. With the 8 smaller holes you get the same flow as the larger 5 holes. However using 5 larger holes, the computer on your vehicle will register lower oil PSI, tripping a CEL, therefore making you go in for an oil change much sooner, and more frequently than needed. This adds up to millions for STP.

    Someone would be a MORON not to clean the sealing surface where their oil filter contacts block....an absolute IDIOTMORON that ought NOT be working on their own car.....SERIOUSLY???? ....just blows my mind that anyone could leave an oil filter gasket stuck to Thier block....LOL/ HOW????? WTF? WHO does NOT carefully clean that perfect surface their new oil filter compresses against? DUHH! You take a rag and meticulously ALWAYS clean that off and then with finger tip wipe fresh new oil on gasket of new filter ....I learned this day one over 40 years ago and have NEVER not even one time failed to clean that surface! If a gasket had ever stuck it would not even stand out in my memory as I would have just wiped it off as I was cleaning surface.....would be as nothing to me....probably has happened...WHO cares! Now very early on like ONE time I had a rubber gasket buckle and leak on tighten down....just defective gasket...was decades ago and THAT has had me paranoid to never tighten filter more than one full turn after contact....other than that one single leak which I caught right away I have never had another problem with oil change leaks. Oh there WAS one filter the threaded boss unscrewed from the block staying in oil filter ....that happened like I say one time ...had to extract from filter and screw up into block....read it was a common glitch with that model car
