      It’s worth asking if you mean alt right in terms of just an exclusive ethnostate, which it is. I’m pretty sure that was kind of the point of why tchalla opened wakanda up to the rest of the world at the end right? To change what it was to something more progressive.
      Also amazing wordplay. I would probably take a bullet for you. To the should or something though... I don’t know you.

      Robert Grant Let me get this straight. Are you saying the fact that Wakanda is a non-democracy means it is an ethnostate? By that logic, the USSR was an ethnostate. We of course know that the USSR was not an ethnostate because it was made up of different ethnic groups. Let's look elsewhere. It's not ideal, but Syria. By your logic, Syria is an ethnostate. Once again, we know that this is not true. Syria comprises many different ethnic groups despite being a dictatorship.
      You really ought to think about these things first, mate.

      Scientist-Engineer isn't the worst descriptor for Shuri, though it only truly comes into play in Infinity War when she removes Vision's mind stone (which only she inexplicably has the talent to for some reason, well it's not inexplicable the film just doesn't bother to do so.) However if the movie gave you the impression Nakia was a warrior then it definitely didn't do it's job in giving these two unique roles properly as Nakia is a War Dog, she's a Wakandan spy certainly trained to be effiecient in war but warrior is not her role. Excerpt from the movie:
      "I'm not a spy who can come and go as they so choose! I am loyal to that throne, no matter who sits upon it. What are you loyal to?"
      "I loved him. I loved my country, too."
      "Then you serve your country."
      "No. I save my country."
      ―Okoye and Nakia
      This movie really did a horrible job of defining roles for any of it's characters. Why's this guy special? He has a rhino.
      Why is Shuri the only scientist able to remove the Mind Stone? (Despite no knowledge of Infinity Stones in comparison to any other character in the films thus far) She just is, no explanation given not even a lazy "I studied Banners work for years and found things he didn't" throwaway line that might give her any reason to have the knowledge she does. Convenient.
      Why do T'challa's balls handle every situation he gets into? They just do, Shuri made them but that's all the technical info you'll get, it's like they made her Q without any attempt to explain the tech like a James Bond movie would. Super convenient.
      Why is the most wanted man in Wakanda (who was branded by them no less) totally able to sneak around Wakanda grabbing up Vibranium like a vaudeville bank robber? Specifically considering the satelitte tech the film shows and the capability Wakandans have of tracking known targets. (shown in the really dark badly shot intro where he takes on the convoy) Again he just can he's so good at smuggling even after he went essentially insane that super Wakanda tech isn't able to find him? Convenient.
      My personal favourite which NOBODY has addressed as far as I've seen is the trains being activated towards the end of the film, EVERY major character we have seen or met in some capacity is busy dealing with something during this scene, in fact the whole country is pretty much at war, how in the name of all that is beloved on this green Earth did they turn the trains on from the middle of a field with very visibly no technology or any kind of platform or console to activate the train system from? So many little conveniences that don't do anything to add to the story they simply get it closer to the end.
      A movie should be excited to explain these kinds of things to you, Black Panther glosses past them as fast as it possibly can and it sucks all the more for it. Which is a fucking real pity because the actors chosen for this film did a great job, T'challa, Shuri, Zakia were all amazing in terms of screen presence and I can't blame them for the dismal writing they had to preform, the cast is almost all star when you take Andy Serkis and Freeman into account too, it's just too bad they were put in a really badly written film and I genuinely hope if it gets a sequel somebody else handles it and gives these character unique descriptive roles which have backstories that last for more than a mere sentence or three.

    • @CatHasOpinions734
      @CatHasOpinions734 6 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Terminimal Eh, not really. The Last Jedi's much more nuanced about these things than either Black Panther or The Matrix. (Spoilers if you haven't seen The Last Jedi (also why the heck haven't you seen The Last Jedi go watch The Last Jedi!).)
      It's obviously not exactly about rejecting the past (after all, Rey does save the ancient Jedi texts, and the guy who keeps talking about killing the past is the villain), but it's definitely about not lionizing the past. That's a big part of why they emphasize the dichotomy between Luke's legendary status vs Luke's reality. His legacy is based on him, but everyone is more complex than their greatest moments would suggest. The fact that he's a great person doesn't stop him from being flawed, if anything his status as a legend made his flaws that much more devastating, because people want him to be a symbol and he's as human as the rest of us. That's why he went into a self-imposed exile. Even at the end, when he finally accepts his legendary status enough to decide to use it to do some good (by trolling Kylo Ren to give them a better chance of escaping), his projection, his legend, looks drastically different than he does in reality. That's not a coincidence. Really, that whole glorious fight scene is a fantastic metaphor for Luke's legendary status: it's an illusion, not reality, but that doesn't mean it can't do a tremendous amount of good. The Last Jedi isn't about Luke being a chump, it's about Luke being more than just his legend.
      Man, I forgot how great that movie was, thanks for bringing it up!

I seem to remember seeing a few women in the ancestor scene (granted they were in the background) and there was that moment when his sister acted as though she was going to challenge her brother's claim to the throne. No one seemed upset at the idea of a woman ruling, just that SHE specifically would be interested.

    I think what people wrongly assume about Black Panther is that it's supposed to be mostly a narrative about white racism but in fact it's a narrative about *Black identity* it's more so about the conflicts that happen within the black community, which of course are influenced by things like colonialism. Killmonger is the jaded Black American who represents the pain of being separated from the motherland and the damage it can do to one's sense of heritage. T'challa is the black identity that could've existed if white colonialism didn't destroy it and taint it. That's why it's fitting that Killmonger had the motive that he did. Idk I'm tired of everything having to be black vs. white in black narratives, this is a pro black movie so it's nice to talk about the deeper aspects of black identity when it comes to race. I disagree that they were trying to appease white people by not going into colonialism, in fact they were pretty much disregarding white viewers by making the movie so black-centric, making it something Black people would relate to the most, culturally speaking that is.

      I'm glad you mentioned this, because it's something I sometimes forget as well. This movie is very well-crafted in that regard.
      Mainstream media that speaks about black issues without somehow centering it around white people and white main characters is very rare.
      The writers also made very clear that Killmonger wasn't a "bad" black person. Media that addresses issues of race often have the villain be a "bad" person who deserves being punished because his "reverse racism" makes him just as bad as his oppressors. Black Panther skipped this entirely.
      They also made sure to point out that his methods of taking over Wakanda were taught to him by colonists (the CIA) and had no black/African origin.

    • @KookiesNolly
      @KookiesNolly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Sako Gekchyan cultures aren’t set in stone. They always change through contact with strangers. As long as it’s non violent it’s a good thing. Smart people know that you can care about your people and your culture while allowing it to change because it’s the natural other of things. I think many European countries like France actually understands that concept very well. There’s something that makes France unique. if as a foreigner you live for a very long time there and then go back to your country, chances are people will notice that you have changed. They met not shove their culture in everyone’s face but simply being around French people makes you act French. And at the same time, their culture is influence by other cultures they welcome and enjoy. French people are welcoming and in favor of immigration. Not all of course, but the vast majority is.

    • @sakogekchyan7366
      @sakogekchyan7366 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Eli N.S
      I do understand where you’re coming from and I agree that cultures are changing with time. Nothing is stagnant. But people shouldn’t be called hateful or bigot for exercising their right to decide who they let in or don’t let in to their borders.. And it’s not about race either. Or at least it shouldn’t be about race. If I was Italian for example I wouldn’t want a large influx of foreigners coming into my country and outnumbering the ethnic indigenous Italian people. I don’t care if they were other Europeans or Asians or whatever.
      I don’t agree with complete isolationism. The strongest nations and empires in the ancient world were the most cosmopolitan. In the Roman provinces you would have people from all around the empire from as far as India and Africa. But what matters here is proportion. A small amount of foreign peoples is not a big deal. It adds flavor to the dish. What’s going on in Europe now is the equivalent of taking the whole container of seasoning and dumping it all over the dish. There is such a thing as too much. Ideas and cultural interaction are powerful when they are used correctly. These days this justification is not as valid because we have things like the Internet and other media platforms to share technology and ideas from across the ocean in seconds. You don’t have to import numbers of that culture on mass to your Shores.
      The reason it wasn’t a big deal in ancient times is because there was always a dominant host culture that was the majority. Understand that when I say dominant I don’t mean it in the sense of dominating or subjugating other peoples. I simply mean that in Armenia the vast majority of people should be Armenian and the dominant culture in that nation should be the Armenian culture of native origin.
      Think of it the other way around. What if Europeans started migrating illegally on mass to African nations? Or what if they entered these nations as refugees because of some instability in their homelands. Now you tell me would the left condemn and harshly judge these countries for turning these Europeans away with the same passion they do with Europeans.
      Bear in mind that colonialism of the past is no excuse. Today in 2018 if something bad happened in Europe and Europeans by the thousands became refugees would you judge nations like Nigeria, India, China or Cuba for denying their entrance?
      I bring this up because the same Xenophobia was expressed by nationalists in Uganda against Chinese immigrants. But I didn’t see the media outlets irrupting with condemnation against Uganda or calling the people of Uganda racists or nativists.
      My biggest problem with the far left there for is the double standard that holds whites and nonwhites to two different standards of behavior. If we are going to judge Europeans we have to judge everyone.
      And it’s sad that I have to give this disclaimer but I have no bigotry or hatred for any race, ethnic group or culture. In fact I’m a history buff and one of my favorite subjects of study are African kingdoms and civilizations.
      Also I believe that the west should change its policy of interaction with developing nations. Instead of treating them like children who need to be fed they should be treated like up-and-coming nations who we should engage in open trade and partnerships. Which brings me to another reason that I hate leftist ideology. Treats people of color like children. In all my conversations with minority members with conservative leaning is the one common thread I have come to see is that they hate being talked down to or patronized by well-meaning but ignorant people who see them as an outlet to fulfill their Savior fantasies. Africa doesn’t need saving. Africans are more than capable of saving themselves and so are blacks in the United States and all other minority groups.
      So getting back to the topic of immigration, the best thing we can do to help developing nations is to help them where they are. When we import vast numbers of these people we are usually either importing the worst members of that society or the best. By importing the worst members we are hurting ourselves. By importing the best members we are hurting their homelands because we are depriving them of their best and brightest. This is brain drain which is the last thing developing nations need right now.

    • @KookiesNolly
      @KookiesNolly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Sako Gekchyan
      One thing you missed about cosmopolitan empires is that what usually made them strong was their ability to integrate foreigners. For instance, Shaun himself made a video about the fall of the Roman Empire and pointed it out. The strength of the Roman Empire was it’s ability to integrate people into their empire. It’s not just the foreigners that were trying to be good civilians, it was the Roman themselves that were welcoming. Their empire fell when they stopped being welcoming.
      So no, just having the indigenous group as a majority isn’t enough. Everyone has to make an effort to live together, the host and the foreigners.
      What you said about European countries patronizing Africa is very true. Anyone who knows the subject in depth will agree that Some European governments are responsible for the state of many African countries today, as they often pull the strings behind the curtains ( France does that a lot for example).
      I am an African immigrant living in France. , I left because there wasn’t much opportunity for me in my country ( plus the French government gave me a grant, I wasn’t going to say no lol!). I am not even interested in going back in my country unless it changes drastically, and believe me, it has to start with France attitude toward us and our current government because OH BOY!...
      As far as the migrants in Europe are concerned, I agree that there are lots of illegal immigrants coming to Italy. However, it’s important to not blow things out of proportion. Lots of migrants come legally and don’t cause any problem but of course no one ever talks about us because we can’t be used of a juicy headline. Illegal immigrants, obviously shouldn’t be allowed, but mixing them with the legal ones is unfair. Changing immigration policies is gonna affect the legal migrants more than the illegal ones, even though it’s the illegal immigrants that causes the most trouble. Most legal migrants don’t even stay in the country for the rest of their lives, and integrate pretty well because they come here with clear goals.
      It’s illegal immigration that is a problem in Europe, not all kind of immigration.

    • @KookiesNolly
      @KookiesNolly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sako Gekchyan the use of the word « import » is very intentionally misleading in your last paragraph. You are trying to put the blame on the host for immigration. Some government give grants, sure, but migrants come in Europe because they want to. By using the world « import » you make it sound like there is a trade or Europe is bringing people in, as if they were the ones taking people and putting them in their country, even though some European countries are currently trying to limit the number of immigrants.
      Just don’t use the word import unless you are talking about goods or slaves brought to another country against their will.

    Isolationism due to protecting one from colonialism and legitimate invaders is also very different from an imperial power exploiting other nations then closing the door on them. Alt-right bros, you can't just make a bunch of false equivalences and then complain that it's unfair the fact that they're black makes them different. Context actually matters, you can't just take everything across the world and across history and act like it's the same everywhere and everywhen.

    • @magnificentgoldenbeast6099
      @magnificentgoldenbeast6099 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aurora. Seriously? The economic philosophy leads directly to mass slaughter. The ideas of communism and redistribution of wealth are so anti what human biology is all about that it is an impossibility to implement. Every time communism is tried it fails and leads to slaughter.
      To say that communism as a philosophy is correct is to say that if a frog had wings he wouldn't bounce around on his ass all day. He doesn't and he does. The only way communism can work is if we are no longer humans. We'd have to be a different species.
      Now, there are welfare states that seem peaceful and prosperous. Can you guess which ones they are? Correct, only WHITE countries have successful welfare states. White northern European countries have high taxes with cradle to grave welfare benefits and they work well. They aren't communist but they take a lot of taxes. Something about their white biology or white culture makes them work very well. I don't know which and I don't care. What's for sure is that there are no successful black countries and welfare for the black community is highly destructive and even the blacks recognize this and are calling welfare the new black plantation.

    Another thing that really bothers me about this: pretty much every alt-righter that's talked about the movie has mentioned how the science is unrealistic. I mean, sure, the hovertrains are never really explained in detail because that's not the point of the movie, but people specifically mention that it's ridiculous to imagine that there's some magical East-African mineral that can run cities and launch spaceships. Sounds reasonable enough.
    Except that if you do some cursory Googling you'll find that East-Africa is actually the source of most of the world's coltan, which is used in almost every electronic device. Vibranium is one of the most realistic movie-magic-wonder-metals because it's based on a real-life wonder metal that we do use to well, run cities and launch spaceships.
    I guess this sort of knowledge isn't super widespread but it's still really frustrating to see people basically just ignoring one of the cleverest pieces of worldbuilding in the movie so that they can complain about how unrealistic it is.

    • @doriangray5750
      @doriangray5750 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, if you watch Molyneux's piece on the Black Panther, he later actually expresses sympathy with blacks who only have a fictional state as a "role model". Many black kids are not only confused about their heritage due to slavery, but also don't have father figures in their lives.
      Molyneux talks about this, and actually gets upset. He's brave enough to "have a conversation..." about the plight of many young black males in American society today. He's a compassionate guy and even if you hate him, he's one of a few people prepared to talk about solutions to the agitators who want a race war (left and right).
      Either this is a good thing, or you think it's a bad thing. Whether he's more intelligent than you or not, at least he's prepared to stick his neck out of the parapet, and, to me at least, that makes him a true philosopher.
      Again, call his show and TALK to him.

This isn't similar to the extreme right position of isolationism which wants to protect its resources so other people who are in need of them don't use them.

This also again shows that they are pushing the whole 'skin color' is the same as 'culture' thing. • @GespenstDesKommunismus

      Though as far as I see it, the movie still overall states that you should respect your ancestors in some way, otherwise he wouldn't be found talking to them all the time (even if he may disagree with them on one point). From a German perspective, this seems especially off putting, imagine if I'd start having a conversation with my ancestors and taking advise from them, even if I might disagree with them on one point. Also, already in the title "Wakanda forever", the movie seems to be advocating for a modern type of nationalism, being proud of your nation, even if not being proud of everyone that has ever been in it. The analogy to "Deutschland über alles" just seems too clear to me.

      Women would still be on average at a disadvantage regarding ascension to the throne, since the monarch is chosen through combat, but it's true that technically speaking a woman can become the monarch if she has royal blood and can fight well. Shuri would have a good chance at taking the throne if she had the fighting prowess of Okoye, for example.

There's factors to this. :V And idk, there's plenty of issues with the hereditary monarchy but I guess lines of royalty would totes focus on securing the means to raise adults who are 100% fit, both gains-wise AND learning-wise so why not? Shaun's said himself that statements that say "on average" always betray biases & fall rly rly swiftly under real-world situations that folk do contextualize in the moment ntm for All Time.
      And, like, yo, being like less scrappy and more witty for lack of a better term (just like having an inborn physical weakness) doesn't equal a lack of 1) respect, 2) responsibility, & 3) respect FOR a responsibility to your own peoples. That's all that matters, and anyway leadership is momentary and should always fall away to new leadership among the kids!!!! Among _all_ the kids. :B

    Excellent video as always, Shaun. There's one thing I'd like to point out in one of Paul/Ian's argument (?) The idea that Killmonger is somehow a representation of SJWs is ignorant of the character from the film. Killmonger is introduced as a Black Ops Soldier who did tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Destroying the purple heart flowers was something that he learned by studying government enabled take downs of countries as Everett Ross mentioned. At the end of the film, T'Challa accuses Killmonger of "being just like them" or "actually one of them" referencing white people/colonizers . Killmonger is a militarized imperialist bent on genocide and is much more radical than his father who suggest giving African Americans vibrainium weapons for protection against violence from white people (similar to the beliefs of Malcolm X and the BPP) with the latter being the most radical belief carried by most SJWs or whatever we are called. To call Killmonger an SJW is ignorant of their beliefs but also the beliefs Killmonger himself

    • @vaiyt
      @vaiyt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Killmonger is the very embodiment of the "actors of history" attitude of the American Dept. of Defense. He burned the Heart-Shaped Herbs because it changed the reality of Wakanda in a direction created by him, even if it was a dumb and unsustainable move. His proposed course of action (giving Vibranium weapons to black minorities to destabilize society, and swoop in to take over) are straight out CIA, and the white dude in the movie makes sure to point it out for the dumbasses who somehow still missed it.

As a result, they were the first to spin the narrative about what "SJWs" were like. Also, Wakanda's government isn't a patriarchal, fully-inherited-monarchy. The film shows that there has been female Black Panthers, and in the comics his sister takes over for a while at one point. And it's government is based on some weird meritocracy (which was, like, one of the main plot points of the film) and only follows dynastically if no-one challenges the former king's first-born son/daughter (which any citizen can do). Not that "I beat you in a fight so I'm dictator now" is all that much better of a system of government than absolute monarchy, but these people were still wrong.

The heart-shaped herb is toxic to those unworthy and not of the original line.
      Which, in hindsight, makes it weird that Nakia was the champion of the River Tribe; whether it was even 20 generations prior, T'Challa and Nakia would then be cousins. They literally accept Bucky, a disabled refugee, into their country *before the movie even starts*. T'challa doesn't even fit their delusions at the beginning of the film.

      Not to mention that Bucky had already been publicly framed for their death of their king in the first place. Plus, Wakanda had already started provided aid workers to various African countries -- at the behest of the old king, nonetheless. The main reason for Black Panther's involvement in _Civil War_ is because a bunch of these aid workers get killed in the crossfire of the Avengers fighting in Lagos, Nigeria.

    I figured T'Challa inherited because he's the oldest child.
    They don't say one way or another if/how women inherit. I vaguely recall one of the five tribal leaders being a woman?

      There's also queens in T'Challa's afterlife vision

      Shuri is, in canon, 8 years younger than T'challa, and her mother, shown in the film, isn't t'challa's mother.

    OH MY GOD! I work at a major theme park (whose parent company owns the rights to some major superheroes and star warriors) and I noticed after we reopened that covid had scarred away a large percentage of certain populations. The people coming to the parks are diverse, but the vast majority (to my eye) seem to fit into two categories. There's the people obsessed with my company to an unhealthy degree, those that no virus could ever keep away, and then there's the Trumpy-fascy types. You can easily recognize them because they wear underarmor shirts with backwards flags, eagles adorn their clothing, sometimes they have american symbols tattooed on their skulls, sometimes they wear nazi iconography, and often when forced to wear masks they have masks that say "This mask does nothing" or "Let's go Brandon". This later group is always, always white. Well, recently, a few months ago I started seeing many of these white families wearing Wakanda masks and shirts to a VERY large degree. Now, I saw Black Panther and loved it. When it came out, I was excited. But I knew I was not the demographic with the cause to celebrate the most. Why years later did these people start wearing Wakanda paraphernalia? I knew it was probably crypto-fascism I was looking at, but I didn't know how this had become a rallying point for them the way that Viking symbols has or that the swastika did last Century. Now I understand. Until now, I had no exposure to alt-right propaganda selling Wakanda. As I recall, they spoke out against Black Panther initially. Fuck these Nazis.

    I thought Molyneaux was the worst at interpreting movies with even a basic understanding of their themes and structure, but I guess Sargon is aiming to one-up him.
    Edit: Also, I’ve got a feeling Sargon was an only child since he seems to think the sibling bickering between Shuri and T’Challa was in any way malicious.

      Big Boss Snake... why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg and my arm... even my fingers... the body I've lost... the comrades I've lost... won't stop hurting. It's like they're all still there. You feel it too, don't you? I'm the one who got caught up with Cipher. A group above nations... even the US. And I was the parasite below, feeding off Zero's power. They came after you in Cyprus... then Afghanistan... Cipher... just keeps growing. Swallowing everything in it's path. Getting bigger and bigger... Who knows how big now? Boss. I'm gonna make 'em give back our past... take back everything that we've lost. And I won't rest... until we do.
