We're back with another Fightcade Frenzy tournament, today we're playing Mortal Kombat 2! This tournament was super chaotic, with lots of hype Toasties and fatalities, and in the end I think we had a great time! hope you enjoy!

Back in 1996 there was an MKII arcade box in my local corner shop. And this teenage girl played Shang Tsung and absolutely wrecked the hardmode arcade ladder. Like annihilated it. Flawless victories. She kept shapeshifting into differnent characters thruout and doing all of their fatalities. Finished the game. 1 quarter. And just walked away. Fkn legend.

man, hearing the sound effects in MK just takes me back. The hurt sounds always made me laugh at how goofy they sound.

The main differences between old MK gore and modern MK gore is that the old games had very cartoonish anatomy (notice the explosion of bones with a dozen ribcages) and the fatalities were usually one big action and that’s it rather than a series of brutal attacks with an extra gruesome finish
I always thought the old MK games were pretty campy like a 1980's Hong Kong Kung Fu movie. The new ones just aren't the same.
@@krunkcleanup2949 exactly. The old games were Kill Bill gory while the modern games are closer to something like Saw in terms of how the violence is portrayed
I remember reading that a lot of the development team working on the modern mk games actually.came down with ptsd because of all the work they had to do with the gruesome fatalities and graphics

@@mollywantshugs5944 it actually makes me happy to hear that the mk series is actually banned from a lot of european and asian countries. I loved the original mk games as a kid and teen. However now as as adult i realize how freaking unhealthy it all is especially with how realistic and engrossing modern games are. I think back then the concept was what shocked and hooked people. Nowatdays its the level of realism. There definitely seems to be a level of sadism to the games now that didnt exist back in the day. Havent played since ultimate mk3 but when i see youtube videos of fatalities in modern games there is definitely a level of cruelty and savagery there.
I’m glad you got to upload this. I remember commenting on the tweet about WB and the copyright bs. I kinda thought it would’ve been a good idea for you to mute the game audio, and just dub all the screams and grunts with your own voice, but didn’t feel the joke would be appropriate while you were figuring out a fix. 😅

Wow! Wasn't expecting all the matches to be that close. I think MK2 has the best looking health bars out of all the fighting games.

Yeah MK2 life bars are amazingly looking. MK2's overall presentation has stand the test of time.

While Reptile would find his footing in UMK3, Scorp & Sub were never good in the OG trilogy. In the first two games in particular they were among the worst, mainly due to weaknesses universal to Ninjas like bad normals and hurtboxes.
UMK3 would actually see Ninjas that are legit top tiers, but Scorp and Sub were not among them. Scorp was technically midtier, but practically entirely irrelevant thanks to Human Smoke being objectively better in every way.
Now I find that funny, I grew up in the coin-op age and played the living H out of this game all across PA & NJ. My experience was that Reptile was certainly on the weak side but Scorp and Sub dominated everywhere I played. Standing b+HK on the ninjas was the best and easiest anti-air in the game.
Sub would get his time to shine in the N64 version of trilogy where they combined the movesets of masked and unmasked sub zero which combined with low kicks being giga buffed in N64 trilogy saw sub catapulted to the high end of the tier list
Scorpion was never good in the original trilogy, Sub-Zero (unmasked) on the other hand was crazy in vanilla MK3, he was in fact about as strong as Kabal because his ice clones were broken, he's still not too shabby in UMK3 though, probably high-mid tier, just a shell of his former self, what's funny is that in MK4 all 3 of them would be top tier.
What do you mean bad normals, every character in MK2 has exactly the same normals, the only difference is the special moves
@@LarryHazard In principle yes, in practice no. Normals still differed in frame data and hitboxes. For instance, in MK1 the ninjas' sweep was lot easier to punish than Sonya's. The ninjas also had bad uppercuts due to worse than average framedata in terms of startup and recovery.
Reptile has a whole other set of skills, fast orb, slow orb, invisibility, slide

Back in the day we did not think the MK2 fatalities were gross and over the top, do you think we were like cavemen lol? The reason you think the new MK fatalities are gross and disgusting is because they're more realistic so it's more like watching a real decapitation or arm getting broken...

man some of the damage some of these moves deal feels so out of whack. Always fun to see the random tournies though, lots of fun to see people learn on the fly.
Mk2 will forever be a classic. I used to get obsessed with it on the arcade back in the day.

I played a bunch of kitana in mk9 and then one day I was playing mk2 kitana and found that I could play in nearly the same way. The buttons and combo timing felt so similar that even despite not knowing wtf I was doing in mk2, i was still winning against my scrub friends

The radius actually rotates at the elbow to allow you to twist your wrist, hence radius, 😁

I completely broke both radius and ulna on my left arm. Had plates put in both and docs said the angles aren't perfect and I have a odd motion to my forearms rotation as you describe. Kinda flops over.

damn i'm glad I'm not the only one who has that sentiment about the new mk fatals.
I like classic fatals cuz they always felt funny and corny and left things for imagination as well. With the new fatals, its very graphic and all like, out there for you to have to withstand. Not a dealbreaker, but the new fatals are definitely hard to watch sometimes and I remember just looking away at times when one happens, its a little much..

Would have went Bonkers in this tournament I love all old school mk games, 2 and Umk3 , I’d probably go undefeated in those because I’ve mastered the frames but then again tricking the AI is way easier than real opponents
damn bro, MK2 was peak early 90s arcade. Eeeeeeeverybody loved this game and it always drew big crowds and laughs.
All of those baraka projectiles could have been countered with just a sweep.

KOF XI would be an interesting game for the discord tournament I think
Love KoF XI. Has a very unique cast, a great soundtrack, and the home console port has the best single player content out of any King of Fighters game.
Reptile was tough in UMK3, Deadly Alliance and X.
HP LP are different in MortalKombat and other like street fighter, at least in older game up to MK3
HP in MK means high punch, while in SF means heavy punch

I remember first seeing MK1 in arcades when I was like 10. There was a crowd around the box with this cool artwork, i caught a glimpse and it was like ninjas fighting and shaolin, and blood and decapitations. And I became obsessed. All I knew was Street Fighter, GI Joe's and Power Rangers. But i loved JCVD movies and the American Ninja movies, so how ofc i loved MK. It was next level. It was crack for early Millenials. It was edgy and awesome and part of the wave where everything was so over the top. Wrestling was more extreme than ever, movies were bloodier than ever, popular music was dirtier and heavier than ever before, everything was sexier and raunchier, video games were gorier and gorier, comedians were raunchier and more insulting than ever, sports were more and more extreme - pop culture got a face lift and it was just getting more and more graphic. It was all part of the zeitgeist. For companies, it was an arms race to top the next thing with something more exteme and grab that next dollar. I think today is a better time overall, I don't miss the old days tbh. But, it was all an interesting social experiment.

So when I was young, I had a Playstation 1 game called Warpath: Jurassic Park. I remember having a *ton* of fun playing it, but I no longer remember what happened to my copy. I recommend the fucking dinosaur fighter for your next tourney.

NICE! The best MK game imo, because it's theme is just Mortal Kombat in it's purest form. All about the tournament, not the end of the world stuff we see in MK3 and the others beyond it that go even further away of what made the characters so iconic. My only gripe about this game is the unfair greedy AI made to waste our wallets back when it released.
Its clear that YOU don't got the point of this franchise lol. The "end of the world" stuff was there from the beginning (MK2 expanded on it), you are just in denial. "The tournament" in MK1 & MK2 was largely a front for the "end of the world" stuff And "the tournament" was never the main point nor the main appeal of MK and its characters. Mortal Kombat got popular because of fatalities and its colorful cast, not because of "the tournament", and that never changed at all.
And gameplay wise, All versions of MK3, Deception, MK9 and MKX are all better than MK2.
@@lukejones7164 Their themes aren't remotely close to an apocalypse like in MK3. MK3 had a more satanic theme with skulls on the menus, screams on the versus character select screen, more dramatic round ends and so on. MK1 and 2 don't have that, they're all about the tournament.
Gameplay has nothing to do with my point.
Also, MK2 is still regarded as the best MK game of the franchise by the majority.

@@damsen978 Only casual gamers consider MK2 the best game because that was when the series popularity peaked in the 90s, not because its objectively better than the rest of the series (it isn't). Just because most people believe something doesn't make it true.
The "theme" of MK has always been blood and gore, magic ninjas and martial arts, nothing's changed.
