  • We're back with another Fightcade Frenzy tournament! This time we played Toy Fighter, an obscure Dreamcast fighting game with some actually SICK mechanics. It's janky but fun, and the tournament was a blast! If you want to join the next one, join the discord by subscribing on Patreon or Twitch!

I remember the arcade I used to go to pre pandemic had this. And somehow I remember seeing the title like years ago by chance, so I had to play it. I even got to play a few rounds with another person. I'd have to say personally it's my favorite fighter. Also, even if it didn't go so well, being a Kaeruman main, seeing him in finals gave me dopamine.
There's some things I would like to expound on for people who wanna' come in or just because I didn't see based on my experience playing (Also because I love this game)
Normal attacks can be dodged, attacks with smoke and higher can't be dodged. Yellows are launch on counter. Oranges are just launchers. And reds are insta-downs. You also have Blues with are counters. On their own they do okay damage, but on an actual counter they do half health.
When it comes to grabs, as you saw, supers and counters (And maybe back throws result in a yellow bar), but so does being grabbed while in a dodge state. You can parry attacks with grab but you can also throw enemies behind you, if it gets teched they essentially avoid by running it out to gain distance. The real big thing though is you can grab from near any position. Backwards, being juggled, and even on the ground (This was the answer to Mifune's insta-down)
There are double and like back forth motions for some characters though I only play Kaeruman. And if both players are close to the ring boundaries, you can actually kick the ring to force them into the center. An extra little detail is that a throw changes on if the break failed before or after the timing window.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk

Mechanics and Concept wise seems kind of neat, if Hasbro buys the rights to this game they could be having a Blast with all the toy franchises they own, we could see Pinkie Pie doing a suplex to Optimus Prime.

What neat game mechanics. Very accessible while also leaving room for skill, and it keeps the player engaged by giving you tools to deal with every tactic. By keeping the combos short you aren't waiting 30 seconds locked into something you can't do anything about. This almost seems better even though it's old haha.

It's weird, but this game reminds me both of Bushido Blade, and actual legitimate fights. In all three, you can have long, drawn-out, tactical affairs involving all manner of careful pokes, parries, and mind-games. But you can also have sudden, violent, unexpected finishes that totally wipe out any advantage you slowly built up.
This all came to mind because of a recent Bellator championship bout between Sergio Pettis and Kyoji Horiguchi. In that fight, Horiguchi had completely dominated Pettis, easily smacking and tossing Pettis around as Pettis swung at air, resulting in a 73 to 19 significant strike advantage (plus four takedowns) for Horiguchi. But it was all for naught as Pettis threw a Hail Mary spinning backfist that caught Horiguchi clean on the jaw, wiping out his consciousness in one of the most violent finishes of the year and winning the bout. All of Horiguchi's beautiful work was negated by the luckiest of strikes from a fighter who refused to give up.
In this game, I can totally imagine one player dominating with careful and intelligent conventional tactics, only to see it all blown away with one lucky throw or bomber. That kind of high-risk, high-reward madness is absolutely hype.

The main difference is instead of a ring you fought on a platform and can knock people off and you can ledge grab, and also grab your opponents leg on the ledge to knock them off the ring too.

This point system is really similar to an n64 game called Fighter's Destiny (there were 2 of them) and the throw meter works the same as well. I played those games a TON and they were pretty fun. They actually had a game mode where you could learn additional moves as well, which was odd. I recommend, I'm curious how it holds up.
What's interesting about that game too is it has a dodge mode button that makes you auto dodge, but it makes you weak to throws. There's also a weird win condition where if you get their health down, they enter a dizzy state and you have to land a finisher to win the round for 3 points, or you do a special for 4. Specials can only be done in the dizzy state. Ring outs also exist for 1 point, and there are slow instant knock down (3 point) moves.

You know, a game where toys come to life and fighter each other is a neat concept. Nintendo should do that with their franchises and make a game called, like, Ultra Slam Brothers or something like that.

Who made this game? Cause this is 100% a sequel of Fighter’s Destiny! But more aggressive
Fighter’s Destiny most of the attacks were minus even on hit, so you have to look for openings and bait attacks for the one hit attacks, which are throws, knockdown attacks and counters.
This game seems to have more rewards by being aggressive.
