    I stumbled on this in a movie theater back in 2006. Was surprised to come across such a game and never heard of it (and one that looked this good and this 90s not from Capcom or SNK). And of course, I had to play the character called "Scorpion", because what fighting game would dare name a character "Scorpion" in such a post-MK world?

    • @3WL2
      @3WL2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      The character looks like a reference to an obscure kungfu film titled 'Operation Scorpio', the main villain uses a scorpion style of kungfu which has exaggerated leg movements and also wears a purple suit. Very cool movie if you're into hk cinema at all.

      Memory serves, the East actively hates Mortal Kombat for butchering it's various cultural lore and some of the oddest appropriation in gaming.
      For example, it's eyeball rolling when an outsider comes in and becomes the best ninja ever. It's infuriating when pretty *every culture* comes in and does the ninja thing better than you, all while fucking up the practices and basic names. (With out-of-place sci-fi tech and pop cultural references).

    • @mirotrevino9662
      @mirotrevino9662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Delightfully_Bitchy There is no western character in MK that does "being a Ninja better than you". The only "Ninjas" are either actually japanese like Scorpion or fill the archetype without actually being ninjas like literally every other MK "Ninja" Not a single one of them is called a ninja in lore except for Scorpion and the Shirai Ryu clan. That is just a term used by fans since its the easiest term to use. Besides saying the east hates MK is a massive generalization as the newer games are some of the biggest imports in Japan.

    • @Delightfully_Bitchy
      @Delightfully_Bitchy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@mirotrevino9662 If a Polish team developed a game where Polish guys in cowboy hats, and spurs were shooting American cowboys, no one would be shocked it didn't catch on in America.
      Mortal Kombat sold terribly in Japan for *DECADES,* so if it did sell well, which I'm not sure it did nor the circumstances around it, it would be a recent thing. That wouldn't mean it's whole history of sales didn't happen.

    • @mirotrevino9662
      @mirotrevino9662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Delightfully_Bitchy first off most western made games sell poorly in Japan it has nothing to do with appropriation and secondly you are making a poor comparison again. Not a single character in MK is "Mr White America" here to kick all Asians butts. It's a massive exaggeration to even try to say that's the case. The game is a fighting game with random characters from different parts of the world just like any other fighting game. Lots of people in the US love characters like Guile, Balrog, and Ken from Street Fighter and all of these characters are American characters based on eastern stereotypes of the USA and no one over here is angry about them so you're not really making a good point

    They obvoiusly took inspiration from various Hong Kong Kung Fu movies here.
    Drunken Master does the ''Drunken Fist'' forms from the 2 Jackie Chan ''Drunken Master'' movies,his stance is literally the ''Drunkard holds his cup''-form, that Jackie Chan does and the character is inspired by ''Beggar So''.
    Master Huang is obviously inspired by Jet Li's version of Wong Fei-hung, from the ''Once Upon A Time in China'' movie series.

    • @JulianPerez-zv6os
      @JulianPerez-zv6os 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, the guy in purple is based on the bad guy from Operation Scorpio. And the villain, Lotus Master, is inspired by the bad guy in Once Upon a Time in China II, about the White Lotus Cult. The animation style seems very similar to 3rd strike, just a bit slower.

    Just when I thought, this master Huang character looks like Hwong Fei Hong, I hear the theme of Once Upon a Time in China???? That's awesome

    10:54 'if you don't know who to pick, pick the guy on the box' - I'd argue that Cinder and Spinal were more noob-friendly characters in Killer Instinct than Fulgore.

    I have been watching some of you tournaments of older or not popular fighting games and have a few ideas if you have yet to run them.
    Either of the Star Gladiator or Plasma Sword games would be interesting. Lastly, how about Primal Rage?
    Enjoying it, Thanks.
