Housing prices are shocking me as well in America.
Old houses that would have been worth under $100k when I was a kid 20 years ago are now anywhere between $350k to close to a million.
I'll probably be renting forever, because no thanks. I'm not going to pay $300k for a 2 bedroom house that's like 60 years old 👀

It's not. That's for the show. The house is not mortgageable, like he said, and needs to be basically rebuilt. They still can get about 200-250k for that thou, because of location and size.

So by hoarding, the man didn't only live very unpleasantly, but also managed to get the value down roughly 150.000 pounds! That's massive! Had something been done about the water leakage in the cellar right away, it might have cost 15.000 pounds. By not doing anything, the damage costs got worse by some 900%.

I can speak to this. 🙋‍♀️ the task seems insurmountable before you start, so you delay and delay until some sort of external factor forces action. Then you have to find the time to take care of it, which typically requires taking time off of work or traveling a distance to take care of the clear out, so you’re marshaling your time. It’s also emotionally exhausting so you try to do as mush as you can physically while you have the mental energy. We took 3 weekends over the course of 2 months to clear out my dad’s place and it was a mad dash right to the end (literally still removing items hours before the new owners came to get the keys).

We have a 5 car garage where we had a lot of fun with restoring old cars for five years. It became so terribly filthy and cluttered with not only automotive stuff but everything else, from mom's furniture re-do hobby, etc. Last summer we all agreed on renting the biggest dumpster, and dump EVERYTHING except power tools. It took us 5 days to clean space out, results were awesome. We re-organized tool boxes with new sets of hand tools. It was an easy and relieving clean up, But I guess some people can't move stuff around for some reason.

My neighbour is a hoarder. I have rats because of her. The yard is a jungle, there is a bathtub full of water in the yard (breeding mosquitoes) and under the house is packed to the gills with trash. I have had to go no contact with her for my mental health. For years I tried to be nice, to reason, to offer to help clean up. I have given up. It devalues my property, but she doesn't care one bit. It’s not selfishness it’s a disorder and people that have it struggle just as badly if not more worse than the people around them both mentally and physically. They jeopardize a lot being a hoarder they know that but it’s a disease. You can’t judge someone based on their lifestyle. If you care so much be a shoulder to lean on for your neighbor they need that more than they need you pestering them about their mess

I watch these videos as a reminder of what not to be…my mother God rest her soul was like this after my father died as he wouldn’t have allowed this to happen. But it explained as to the reason why my mother did fall into hoarding..she lost her father to a heart problem when she was only 17 years old then and it killed her for years afterward. Sometimes this horrible mental illness comes and rears its ugly head after a major loss happens to an individual and gets out of control…I have had losses in my life as well but choose the opposite direction….to clean and get rid of stuff…it makes me feel better knowing that what I get rid of may help another person somewhere some how.

It would have been absolutely reasonable for them to press for the others to fix the issue since it prevented them from using their half of the cellar and likely caused damage too.

How can anyone let their father live like that? It appears that adult protective services should've been called ages ago either by the neighbors or any family member who gave a damn. It's so dangerous for the entire neighborhood since the houses are so close together, one fire can burn down the entire block! If my Dad was hoarding like that I would make sure he got into a good nursing home and the place cleaned up and sold. It's clear that he had some type of mental instability. I hope his final years see him showered and clean every day of his life, with a good hot meal and clean accommodations and the medications he needed all along.

You think a nursing home may just take in anyone they like? There are regulations for who is eligible for a place in a nursing home! He's got to actual need nursing around the clock due to very poor health. Showering every day is real bad for your skin. Any dermatologist recommends showering twice a week or so, unless one gets very dirty from his activities. There is no known medication against hoarding. Am still hoping they find something to cure unrighteousness and laziness :)
