Have BMW ruined the new M2? I think I have got to the bottom of it.

- I finally get the chance to drive a 'new' BMW M2 and am shocked with my findings.
A huge thanks for another subscriber car here (thanks Tom) and I hope we did it justice.
If you have a car you would like me to review/film, get in touch!
Chris Harris made a good point on his podcast a few weeks ago..... The sweetspot for buying a car in the UK was around 2016-2019 when the cars still had a decent sound (less emissions restrictions) and way less tech that just detracts, and distracts, from the actual driving experience.
U.S. spec version here. Electronic nannies not an issue. Loving my G87. Coming from 981 Cayman S PDK. Cayman was sexier and had that sweet flat 6 sound but really loving the brute power of the S58.
The speed limit warning can be turned off by pressing the Set button on the steering wheel for a few seconds or alternatively can be coded out. The lane departure warning can be turned off via a shortcut or by setting it off in the Individual mode.
First thing to do after start is putting it in sport mode and all annoying stuff is gone.
We will probably find the EU bureaucrats will start off with speed limit warnings being in every start, to always being on, to you cant go over the speed limit unless on a race track.. sad times
This 👆BMW make is sooooo easy to switch off (press SET or put in Sport) done
Speed Limit Warning - Read the Handbook Rob, 1 push of a button on the steering wheel. No problem!
Traction is insane! Mine is lowered and corners so flat it makes no sense. Former E92 M3 owner (11yrs) . This is as good as its going to get for BMW. All nannies can be turned off in the states and stays off. Still remember all the hate from e46 guys..
My wife has a new M2 G87 and its an absolutely amazing car rapid on public roads is an understatement its quality I will be keeping this once the PCP finishes has a future classic
As a former F87 M2 owner and a brief owner of a G87 (before I sold it for a Porsche), I completely concur. The G87’s driving experience is best described as insanely proficient - which isn’t necessarily what I want from a raw sports car.
Mate loving the content been watching from the beginning, you really are a natural
Amazing production and great video mate , like the E92 comparison theory, makes sense !
I ran an E90 M3 for 3 years and 45k miles. What a car and what an incredible engine. It screamed all the way to the redline, click for an upshift and go again. I went all across Europe, over the Alps and track days at the ‘ring, Spar & Imola. That car was an all time great Machine. If BMW have given up on their weird design language I’d consider one. If it truly is a new E90 M3 I’ll be first in line at the dealers.
It's has horrible electric steering. Don't touch it.
I hate to say this Rob but they are correct about the speed limit warning, the law changed in April this year I believe.
Absolutely mad 😂
I recently drove an M2 G87 Auto (along with an M3 Manual & X5M) on a drive day. The Tech is a little frustrating when you only have a short period of time to explore the Car, but overall I enjoyed driving it (Tech would be easy to sort if you owned for a couple of weeks). The longer wheelbase / suspension was great on crappy roads compared to my 1M's shorter wheelbase and rock hard suspension (especially over sharp road imperfections). I was a little worried it would ruin the fun of my 1M, but fortunately it didn't, it actually made it more enjoyable, being a Manual and more analogue. I think they are both great Cars for a wide variety of reasons. Long story short, I have recently paid a deposit for the forthcoming M2 CS. Would prefer it if BMW offered this in Manual (very unlikely) but I'd happily live with the ZF 8 Speed Box.
Epic car .
Whatever it is M2 , M3 I want it LOL.
Good luck with your house
Just change the M Mode to Sport and it turns off the speed warnings and lane change assist. Simples
As a design, and performance icon, I love it.
Unfortunately ALL modern cars are guilty of this modern era trend for dozens of nanny aids and digital dash rubbish.
I'll be keeping my OG M2 forever at this rate.
Cracking video and insight into the car. You do some great reviews, very entertaining combined with super personality. Keep it up !!
Hi Rob,
Thank you for,the video on the M2, looks beautiful with the frozen paint.
When can we expect you getting back to your “a day in the life of a car dealership” stories?
Merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year to you and your loved ones.
Just hold the SET button and it will turn off the speed warning,
This is great Rob, I think your channel is going to blow up, your a natural mate keep it coming 👍
mmmmm you might be right I'm actually an E92 M3 fan boy and I love this M2
Basically, the car would be perfect without the touch screens, with proper cluster of gauges in its place, and a little bit more noise
It’s based on an M4 chassis, gearbox and engine. You’re buying a mini M4 basically and all of your gripes can be shortcutted out.
The production on this one is absolutely beautiful Rob! Spot on as always, very good watch indeed 👍
Just bought the new m2 , totally agree it similar to past m3 I’ve owned, love the car tho
I ordered mine 3 weeks ago, can’t wait for it to be delivered!!
That must be the first BMW in years I like the look of!!!
Short answer is no, no they have not. It’s a great car.
Good review, it’s a real compromise between technology and raw driving experience. Stick an M3 badge on it job done
Hi Rob you are correct about tech in cars when I bought my 7series you can book a two hour session so that things are explained to you at the end of the time even though it didn’t take two hours I had forgotten a lot of it
An example of what I would never use 1 self driving 2 remote parking where you can stand outside your car 3 self closing doors
4 remote starting so that you can control the heating and when you get in it’s warm things that I have never even tried doing plus all the other bits and bobs some useful others not so
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again , Rob your presenting is up there with the best.
I just sold my G87 M2 after 11 months. Picked up a Cayman GTS 4.0. The M2 was simply too aloof. No steering feel whatsoever, and worse yet, the steering felt artificial and video game like. The brakes were strong but soggy, the handling was great, but again, no feel. The engine was stonkingly strong, but had oodles of lag, and boring sounds. Overall, if I wanted a fast personal cruiser, the M2 is it. For an "M" product, it is lacking. Add to that, a tachometer you can't see, electronic gremlins and bugs, and a million ergonomic issues. I've owner all gens of the normally aspirated M3s, and this is a major letdown
Easy to switch off the bongs & lane departure on start up. Add “driver settings” to a shortcut.
I think this car is great value , nth come close performance wise in this price. I like the looks to , much more than M3/4 . Its bit less engaging then f87 but as a whole package it's far better car.
I'm glad your big complaints about the M2 don't apply in the U.S. The speed-limit warning and lane assist are off by default and do not need to be defeated whenever you start the car. I assume that BimmerCodes could recode your U.K. car permanently (or at least until the next dealer service).
I own a 2011 Porsche 997.2 GTS, and purchased a 2024 FType V8, I intend to keep these cars as they are the last of their era, we run a BMW X5 hybrid that will do nearly 60 miles in Electric, and is incredibly good on my daily commute of 40 miles.
Hi. Good video about the G87. Just to point out that the speed limit bongs can be defeated y pressing Set on the steering wheel for three seconds. The lane departure can be turned off in MSport mode, still a pita, but no need for delving through the menus. You still have to do it on every start up. 🤷♂️ progress lol.
Enjoyed that one Rob 👍🏻 still think an E46 M3 like I have is the best ever made. Maybe I'm biased, plus I don't have to constantly turn sensors or bongs off going into new speed limits 😂
Push the SET button on the steering wheel and that turns off the speed warning
My thoughts, this is meant as constructive criticism but personally I don't think the world needs another car reviewer who either only spends a day or two with the car, or feels qualified to pass judgement without researching things fully first, there's enough of that already on this platform.
Great video in general, good camera presence and presenting style, loved the drone shots etc but the problems with the above are here already, all of your major complaints with the car are presented as dramatic issues (I don't know your personality, you could just be a dramatic person for show) but people who know the car well are telling you they're not big problems at all. And conversely, there are a number of things which are very irritating that you just won't see or appreciate unless you've lived with it for a few weeks or more.
Example, the fuel tank is only 50 litres. I'm still in the break-in period so I can't go over 4k RPM or drive flat out, and even now I'm only getting 230 miles max from a full tank. That'll probably drop to 150-200 miles from a full tank once I've had the run in service done, which is pretty shocking even for a M car. The MPG is what it is, but the fuel tank really should have been bigger than 50 litres. I still can't quite wrap my head around only getting 150-200 miles from a full tank.
The iDrive screen doesn't show the total number of miles which is frustrating when you want to quickly glance at it.
The default HUD in road mode is awful, it doesn't even show what gear you're in.
The centre console buttons around the gear lever are very poorly designed and positioned, they're flat gloss plastic with no tactile feel to them. This means you have to completely take your eyes off the road down towards your left hip to press one of the buttons, which is super dangerous for very obvious reasons. When you first get the car you assume you'll build muscle memory for it, but you'll never be able to just place your hand there and feel for the button you want to press because it's all one single flat surface.
The leather used on the seats is awful, the door cards look and feel like Fisher Price made them, there's barely any storage for putting your wallet/keys somewhere.
There's only 2 USB ports and they're poorly positioned.
The brakes are good but the amount of brake dust they spew out onto the wheels is quite excessive.
There's very little in the way of quality-of-life conveniences i.e no shopping bag hooks in the boot or USB ports/chargers in the rear... I could go on and on and on but these are the things which can irritate you more when you own this car than a bong for speeding.
These are all minor complaints though and wouldn't put me off buying one, most of them come part and parcel with owning the 2 series platform. But I respectfully strongly disagree that this is a stealthed M3, the G87 is far off the 3 series platform and you're reminded every time you sit in there that you've chosen to buy a cheaper 2 series platform.
Overall the car is outstanding though, and imo it's the second best car I've ever owned with the best being a F83 M4 convertible. That was in a different league to the M2.
Almost all (minus leather quality)of the cons you mentioned are valid also for M3 and M4 G8x, btw there are shopping bag hooks in the trunk of mine G87
Don’t throw it into the hedge, Rob!
M2 is topcar ❤
It is a legal reason that they need to have it activated, if you turn that off its not BMWs fault.
I agree on lane keeping assist - its dangerous even on motorways where they have roadworks
Thank you for this video.
As a matter of fact, i personally decide where to spend my money and what car i drive. I will never ever buy a car with all this creepy, useless and stupid technology iniciated by people who have no clue of driving. So i do, and many of the people i talk to are too, do buy older cars. A few of them, older cars and let the car industry build cars no drivers guy ever wants to buy. What an annoying and insulting paternalism to must drive such cars... and a shame for the car industry who do not any more build cars the consumers want
Hold SET on the steering wheel for a few seconds. Overides the Speed Limit warning on BMWs.
Lane departure will be in the shortcut if you keep turning it off
It is technically a detuned M3 because of the chassis and drivetrain.
as if I could afford that... I´m happy with my 1st gen 220d coupe 😁
How much does it cost to replace the dashboard screen?
Brilliant video 😊😊😊
None of that nonsense in the U.S. the 2025 M2 is quite awesome
Lucky you! Jokes aside though they are amazing cars.
Mint review
I've made a decision to never ever buy new again. Way too much tech ruining the excitement of driving (let alone the $$$) I'm not a robot and can see the lanes and vehicles around me perfectly well thanks! EV's? Just more bull to go wrong and decrease the value shockingly fast. So, I'm sticking to my V8 and V10 BWMs. I figure if I have 2 or 3 in the garage I can swap them around and keep their mileages low and that'll see me out 😂
The day the powers that be tell me the V8s on my boat have to be hybrid I will laugh so hard! Another great vid Rob. Agree with everything you say m8.
Same with the cars that are already out there no need too.
BimmerCode is the solution for that beeps etc.
Is there any way to code off the speed warning etc with something like a Carly?
I think you’ve nailed in in a sense, new cars are obviously amazing with all the tech, safety etc but, the soul has been ripped from them and that soul is from us, the driver, I also get before the eco minded have ago that they are cleaner, surely though manufactures must realise that we are buying older performance cars and spending huge amounts on restoration, general repairs, fuel etc, why can’t they have an option why the tech is not in the car, just basic equipment with a simple clutch, engine and display?
Jesus Rob, again read the Handbook! Button next to gear lever change mode to Sport and the Lane Assist also goes off if you want to cover ground or drive in a spirited manner.
Complaining about the speed limit warning and other electronic safety features is useless because it is not up to them to put it or not, this is mandatory by law, so a bit not relevant
Yes they have lost their way.... Starting with the"rabbit teeth": grill and then the"angry face"...: then removing almost all officially buttons... Some functions must have physical buttons access always e.h. climate control.. Car stereo..
Got a mk8 Golf and both screens went black whilst driving recently; trouble was, the heater was at max boost/heat and, without the graphics, it was impossible to adjust. Just ridiculous. Had a Golf R before and, whilst brilliant to drive, it is a fast track to losing your license; I would worry, with an M2, that it would be too easy to get a lot of points very quickly.
Cupra owner here - infotainment problems are my life
Yes, common issue with Golfs. I've had it happen to several and had to hold the power button on the infotainment system for 10 seconds to reboot it and be able to control the heater.
Isnt the G42 and G87 based on the 3 series's to get the 6 cylinder in, unlike 2 series grand coupe with is based on the 1 series? I have a G42 230i and i lobe it like 2 cars in one and probably enough power i need.
Shame I’m not local (I’m South Coast) I have an interesting BMW I’d love to have reviewed… the controversial E63 6 series but in 650i form with a 6 speed manual box.
Great vid. But how do you people convince yourselves to drive on a one-lane road?
Unfortunately things like lane assist are mandatory so BMW has no choice. The new M2 is obviously actually a M3 circa 2014
Technology is only as infuriating as the pillocks trying to understand it and ultimately use it 😂
Looks like ya in and around Otley wish you had taken it up from Otley to Pool bank top flat out. see how it sounded.
Are you becoming the new version of Carwow, reviewing cars.
Blame the EU! Not BMW's fault. At least we can turn them off, the day will come when we can't!
Sick colour.
My seat belt ding annoys the fek outta me, i asked a tech how to turn that off and u cant so beeps for speeding would be a deal breaker
Bros gonna lose his mind as the world gets more techy
Rob I have a CLS63 S shooting brake final edition if you want to review like this car
Hi Rob
Not anything to do with this video but I can't be arsed searching for the video you did on the KA.
I've had a few sherberts after work, sorry 😂
I've just bought a ka from G3 and it needs new badges.
Please would you be a gent and send me the link cos I can't find them.
Or have I had i had too many sherberts 😊
I still don't like ABS. I'm that old and technophobic about cars lol
Colour is Pure Frozen Grey
not car problems - software problems
I thought i had put on top gear 😂
You will Drive a analog car, them Drive a Morgen +6.
Are you a car reviewer or car dealer?
Too much tech as per ...zzzzzzzzzzzz! 😜
Surely it must be fairly straightforward for car manufacturers to give options for different programmable drive modes, so you can press one button to turn off any of the 'driver assist' (or driver interference) functions you don't want in one go, rather than have to scroll through multiple screens and multiple selections each time you start the car? It's madness that they haven't included this function.
Good review on the M2 . I have a G42 230i and that’s plenty quick enough in sport if you want this series for half the price .
P. S Don’t forget showing the day to day stuff that you are good at as well please Rob !!!
M2 vs 230i is no comparison. Sorry.
@ you’ve missed the point my friend . Not everyone can afford an M2 .
Can you not turn off those annoying functions with an OBD scanner? Cue the Carly sponsorship...
Yes Rob it’s an EU requirement that all the speed and lane garbage comes on each time you start the car (so much for Brexit eh!) the EU actually wanted to physically limit the car to the speed limit, but they were persuaded not to, for now anyway.
70k , the depreciation is going to be horendous.
all new cars sold in the EU must have advanced emergency braking systems, intelligent speed assistance, emergency lane‐keeping systems, driver drowsiness alert and all sorts of other tech. but were not in the EU i hear you shout so although these laws may not apply in Britain car manufacture's will not make a special model just for us with this tech left out so welcome to the world of all new cars. where you have a shit load of very expensive tech that we struggle to turn of and don't want but we are made to pay for it in the cost of the car
And there lies the problem. We are not "made" to pay for it. It's a choice. All the time punters are willing to splurge that kind of cash on 4 wheels, the manufacturers take that as a nod that the punters want all that tech. Stop buying and they will soon think again. You wouldn't keep going to the same restaurant if they kept on serving dishes you didn't want!
peso intorno ai 1.700 kg
Lane assist is the same on my car, everyday turn it off. It's due to the NCAP rating I believe which is reduced without out, but how is it safe on those small types of road when it starts tugging on the wheel.....grrrr
Needs an entrepreneurial person to hack these and let us turn them off at our choice
Didn’t RTFM - but complains about a good car. Nice video. Blocked.
Definitely not an M2 anymore. More of an M4. The M2 should be simple and compact, this is too fat and has too much tech. Also I think you were being kind on the looks 😂
Everyone seems to forget that f87 comp was 1650kg on a scale with full tank more less the same as f82 M4...
Totally agree with you, that’s why I’m looking for older models without the so called driver aids , plus if anything goes wrong you have to sell a kidney , great vid , I’m a regular view of your channel
I owned the OZ M2. It was a very nice car. A very fun car to drive. A little pricey but still doable, but the new M2? Way too expensive. BMW is really gouging their customers. Be that as it may. I'm very happy with my 2023 Mustang GT 6 Speed. All black with chrome badging. Looks like a million bucks and 25k cheaper than the M2.
Hello from Ireland again, Rob lol. Jesus, an M2, is an M3, I don't know, Rob. I wouldn't throw either one, out of Bed, lol. It Sounds brilliant. £70k is a bit Crazy, just wait two years, and get one at 50% of that. Or, Matt Armstrong might build one, and Raffle it off, lol. Rob, I think, anyone having that sort of money 💰, for one, there are, a lot of other Cars I could get for £70k, Mate. But what do I know, I sell Motorbikes lol. 🙏🙏👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The latest modification has introduced Listen To Keir when you turn the engine on.
6 pointed Starmer, you sayyyyyyy?🤔
Complete disagree.
Modern cars are terrible
I have m2 g87 and had a e92 m3.. agree with a lot but e92 was such a raw feeling car and sounded a million times better. I personally think the g87 doesn’t sound great.
I had f82 I think that sounded better than g87.
But the e92 can’t daily drive it with the MPG etc
However i was almost attempted to sell the G87 buy a shit electric car for doing boring trips and put a e92 in the garage as a weekend car
Can buy a 2024 M3 for £70k I don't know why you would buy a M2?
You’re missing the point. The M2 is a smaller and more rewarding sports car than a bigger chassis variant. All the models are aimed at what a particular customer is looking for. The F87 m2 is arguably the best m car to date harking back to the original smaller and raw m3 of the 2000s. New M3 is a saloon also. Just because the number infront of the “M” is a digit higher doesn’t mean the car is better. The 1M is also in the top of the m car classes. These newer G platform cars you are better with the smaller cars for fun and performance not an m3 or higher unless you want more practicality.
@f1sh your point is smaller and lighter is better but that's WHY the new M2 sucks, it's literally a chopped down M4, it's huge and weighs 1800kg. The 1M you mention is the last good m car (f series M2 has epas)
M2 looks better and its more fun.
@@johnstape4488 f87 comp was 1650kg on a scale with full tank more less the same as f82 M4 with full tank. G87 is 1725kg full tank , add forged wheels and li-ion battery and it's 1690kg
The new Jeremy Clarkson 😊
Here in America we still have some freedom. I turned all this crap off the day i got mine and it stayed off. Never had to turn it off again. You guys gotta vote out that nanny state you’ve built for yourselves over there. Why you all want more government controlling you is beyond me. I say that with all due respect of course.
Im from germany and i fully agree that this nanny state is pretty hard but you cant forget here you can turn off your daily speed limit warning and go drive 200mph if you want on an open "autobahn". So i would rather turn on sports mode daily and drive with high speeds without going to court than having it permanently disabled and only beeing allowed to drive 70mph with my sports car. In a perfect world you would combine both :D
@ I have to admit, you’re absolutely right. I would love to have no speed limit here. Good point.
I will send a Email to BMW Germany to tell them the Little car trader has got it wrong . Having driven all the current range of BMW cars , as i might work at a dealer or not . If BMW along with All other manufactures , will but safety systems on the car as most of joe public will not be able to use 400 Bhp , even when switching traction system off it still working in the back ground . people like your self need theses systems as your driving is not the best at times , as you showed when you where in the snow in the other BMW .
A Woke They/ Them M2,
Unfortunately good car boring video.Sorry.
