Yeah. Cartoon characters with small hands just look weird to me and his blank expression before 3 wasn't very Sonic. Glad 3 fixed it.

@@DreamcastGenesai Yeah. I get that they went with the old one because it wouldn't clash with most of the levels but a new sprite based on the Hesse design would've been ideal. Lava reef just looks wrong with neon origami sonic running through it. Knuckles got the redesign at least.
The editing and effects on this is just a feast for the eyes.

I think that the best is Sonic Mania one, because it is like a mix of the 2 and 3.
When it comes to official Sonic sprites, Sonic 3 is my favorite, as it is the one I feel captures the personality of Sonic from the sprite design alone.
However, Mania is super close due to the smooth animation

I think you made the best design of classic sonic I'm my opinion. It takes the small, chubby look of sonic 1, 2 and mania, the tough stance of sonic 3, and the fluent animation and bright colors of sonic mania. It also gives a hint of ova/cd cutscene sonic as well.

I like the mood change they have Sonic from S1 to S3. In the first two games, how sprites portrayed him as being focused and determined, while being impatient in a sort of "yo, get going, we have to save the world!" way.
In Sonic 3, he looks a lot more laid back and confident. He's cocky to a fault with that grin in his standing and running sprites, as if to say, "I've done this twice before... Let's do it again!"

I feel like the sonic 3 Sprite was designed the way it was because you weren't meant to look at it that closely, plus, when it was made, TVs were fuzzier, so the details would blend
The lowest spine on the head of the 1/2 sprites attaching to his neck is correct for how Sonic was designed at the time in Japan, it wasn't fully changed to attach to his head until after 2's release.
My main problem with 2's sonic is all of his new sprites created for that game have the american mohawk. It's easily visible when he runs on a strip but you can see it in every sprite - even the walking ones when comparing how the back of his head is animated between 1 and 2. These are mixed with reused 1 sprites (Such as pushing) that leave the design inconsistent depending on the animation.
3's have issues of their own but you can read about that on the Sonic 3 Unlocked blog.
Well it makes sense, Sonic 2 was developed in America unlike 1 and 3, and in some of the Sonic 1 sprites he also appears to have a mohawk (the standing sprite especially, where the quills meet the head, even has the same shading as sonic 2. You can see where it's perfectly round then bam, sprites. This is probably why Greg Martin thought it was a mohawk in the first place).
You can especially see the Mohawk when sonic runs around a corkscrew loop
idk all of the sprites except the corkscrew sprite look like the Japanese design to me

I like the sonic 1 sprite the most because it’s type of blue is the one that looks more natural.

I think I'm more used to Sonic 3&K sprite, because of how absolutely solid the game is and how everything around it is so amazing. I guess that's why I love S3&K's sprite, because of what it represents and the game it comes from (Which is pretty much my favourite ever). Now from a purely design standpoint I understand your points, which I guess are things that you notice how deformed it is when split from the rest of the elements of the game, but when paired with everything else those are some things that you don't really notice. Also never been able to seen the mouth as a frown, but as a smirky smile. I guess we all been brainwashed by the european-american always smiling Sonic.
And yeah, of course, Mania is amazing but it's a bit unfair because of much more resources the dev had compared to the Genesis era. Still, can't say no to the S3&K, and will always love it for what it is

Damn everybody sleeps on Sonic 3's Sprite. I respect it for at least evolving the design and sprite style unlike Mania, which just back stepped and made him look like he did in 1 and 2 except a really light shade of blue, for some reason.
Sonic 3's sprite is the most expressive. It has bigger eyes, rounder shoes and bigger hands. Even with these cartoony changes he looks the edgiest he has the darkest shade of blue, also he looks pissed in most animations. The longer limbs also makes it look like he evolved from Classic Sonic to Modern, it looks like a halfway transformation. It shows that Sonic has matured and also expresses more. The Sonic 2 sprite kind of has a blank expression.

Outside from the colors (which were different from both Sonic 1 and 2), the proportions while in the running sprite are the subtly chubbier ones from Sonic 1 and not the more refined, stylized proportions from Sonic 2. Plus many animations such as the "stop running" one built upon Sonic 1's, not 2's

Sonic Advance sprites are somehow way smaller than even Sonic 1 sprites, yet a million times more expressive and faithful to the original design than all official sprites shown in in this video istg

His front leg is closer to the camera. The spikes on his neck because is normal for classic Sonic's that aren't Toei or Tyson Hesse.
I do really like how Sonic 3 gives more definition to the shoes and makes them look like they have actual depth.
Mania’s a bit of an unfair comparison given how many years of hindsight they have to work with, but something really clever is that they use cyan to shade the gloves and the white parts of the shoes rather than a simple gray color, which means those cyan colors can actually be used to apply highlights to Sonic himself, giving him much more depth. This same technique is used for his end of stage victory pose, where he gives a toothy smile
It is telling though that the Mania design is otherwise trying to most closely follow the General shape of the Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 sprites
S3 sonic's gotta be my favorite sonic sprite, it's like a mixture of modern and classic, and I absolutely love it. He feels more "alive" in S3, if you get what I mean.

Sonic 3's sprite is the best in my eyes. Way more animated, way better design in my eyes, and he has a tail. The gloves are larger to be better detail and scale to the character, as most cartoon characters had slightly larger hands due to the gloves. The slightly rounded shoes give better aerodynamic design to the character then just yet another flat spike, and is more realistic to an actual shoe. And your entire complaints about the spikes are all wrong, they are all pointy, downward, and will cut you if you were to poke them, so do it, I dare you, go poke the hedgehog's spikes.
Sonic 3 was a masterpiece all around.

@@churro1201 nah the 2 beta sprites have the problem of making the sprites more based on the American design (it has the Mohawk like spikes) the final 2 sprites do keep the mohawk like design but unlike the beta sprites it’s less consistent since his walking sprites don’t match his standing sprite

I have a theory for the Sonic 1,2,3&K sprites. On the Sonic 1 sprite looks like he's a mere child. The Sonic 2 sprite looks like he hit puberty. The Sonic 3&K seems like he completed puberty.
It's honestly kinda confusing to me that a lot of people seem to prefer the Sonic 3 design over 2
Even though it is pretty expressive during the animations, the Base Design feels kinda... off to me
Your Design definitely takes the best of the other Designs, though, to be honest, his Pupils are too slim in my Opinion...
It's an issue I already had with the Sonic 3 Design, it's important to make that sorta stuff visible!

i don't like s2 nearly as much due to it being based off the american design a bit more, which is visible in how the spikes are designed

Out of all of them Id have to say Sonic Mania's is my least favorite. The colors are way too saturated and light (mostly the blue being a saturated cyan) and the spikes looking more like the SatAM Sonic. Also is it just me or does it look like the back spike connects to his leg?
Personally, I think the Sonic 3 sprites are the best weve gotten for Sonic.
Agreed, I think Mania's Sonic is based off how most Sonic fans see classic Sonic. Generations and forces had this lighter shade of blue, Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 both being free mobile games probably have a more iconic sprite because Sonic 3 never got a phone port. It also makes sense because Sonic 1 has been done to death and everyone uses the Sonic 2 sprite.

Mania sprite is insanely fluid and well animated, and the new expressions are good... but it feels like a Classic Sonic design that's based on nostalgia, made to fit fans' idea of Classic (a.k.a. S1) and SEGA's idea of Classic (a.k.a. Forces, lighter blue, and a stagnant status quo that ignores all progress and continuity)
Add to that the saturated blue... yeah, hate it
S3's sprite might be rough, but it actually tried to evolve the design, gave it a lot more volume and made it actually look like it had depth or an actual posture that feels natural. Also it looked closer to Saturn era Sonic which is best Sonic imo.
For me the best Sonic sprites are the sonic 1 sprites

In my opinion even if the other sprites look really good they always look so determined and serious. Sonic is known for staying positive and keeping that smile even in the most horrible situations. I think Sonic 3 one fits his personality better.

I've always thought in Sonic 3 he looked like plastic.
I actually see the S3&K sprite as a goofy smile (only apparent when he’s idling, as his other animations show that it’s actually not a smile), so I see him as this Jolly fella jumping through. Despite lacking a mouth when idling, the sonic 1 and 2 sprites kind of channels in the “too cool” energy, which sonic was really known for, like the lacking of a detailed mouth actually gives sonic this determined and sleek look to him(plus it’s shows that he’s so cool he don’t need no mouth to show what he’s thinking, his eyes do all the talking)
one weird thing i noticed in a video about Sonics animations and how they range from game to game is that the Sonic 3 look actually reverts back to the one used in Sonic 2 whenever you run down those cylinders in Marble Garden Zone. this wasnt even mentioned in that video and i just somehow noticed it.

The Sonic 3 & Knuckles has always been my favorite simply because of the shading on side of Sonic's head. Other designs have it look like the spines are lined up or glued onto his head like a mohawk, whereas S3&K has a more seamless transition between the head and spines.
Also, the addition of a slight grin and the look/shape of the eyes and brow give him a more determined look fitting for Sonic.
Dude PLEASE make tutorial videos on pixel art. This is absolutely amazing, and as someone who is trying to learn pixel art, this would be so helpful

Me who has the exact opposite opinion on the subject:
It would be interesting to compare the animations between the original Sonic Games as well as the sprites. That way, you could compare Sonic CD as well.
The overshaded eyes of S3 looks like he has gray iris, which is weird. I always saw it as the bridge of modern and classic sonic because of that. Now I know it's just overshaded.
This project looks amazing! I can’t wait to download Sonic Studio when it comes out. But, I do have one question, will Bomb be a playable character?
I may be alone on this, but in the 1 and 2 sprites, there was that little detail that always bugged me, it's that white line between the eye and cheek, I don't know if that was supposed to be a lightning effect on the cheek, or something like that, but in my opinion, that looks weird, as if Sonic has a serious disfigurement on his eyes.

I will always say the sonic 3 art style is the best one
My favorite is the Sonic 2 sprite too! I think in Sonic 1 the colors doesnt fit (hes almost purple) and in Sonic 3 sprite he doesnt looks serious at all, but the spikes and the tail are in the right size. When it comes to unofficial games, the sprites used in Sonic Studio are the best. He looks like toei Sonic, the spikes, the eyes and his smile and shoes make him so cool!
Finally someone who actually looks into these sprites like I do, I've never liked the weird thing where they drew the border to Sonics eyes and mouth incorrectly on Sonic 1 and 2, but otherwise they look real nice. Sonic 3s was a shiny, cloudy, low-color mess, I get he looks a wee bit more expressive, but Sonic 1 and 2s animations never had an expression problem at all (Just look at the balancing animations!) Sonic mania IS good, but its *far* , *FAR* too saturated. Sonic looks turquoise, his skin looks red, his gloves look an odd shade of lime (note, you can make whites not look as depressing as a drab gray color, but you need to color them a light, unsaturated, deep blue color, like in that Toei sprite but a bit more, the harsh turquoise-lime makes it unappealing)!
I kinda like the simple look of Sonic 1's sprite,but I like more the one from Sonic 2.
Besides with Super Sonic,yeah,I prefer the minimalist Super Sonic than the detailed one,Sonic 3's sprites just look cursed to me.

You, sir, are a man of taste. I was around back in the day, and when I saw derpy, plush, cross-eyed Sonic from Sonic 3, I was disappointed. Sonic 2 is the best out of 1, 2, and 3, and Mania beats them all. Your...I mean...that last one is awesome, and again, as someone who grew up with Classic Sonic, that certainly does him justice. I like the animation with the nose rub as well. It's one of the best Sonic sprites I've ever seen. If I could critique it just a bit, I'd say that the eye closer to us could be two pixels wide to some extent, similar to how Sonic Mania has his eye two pixels wide but it looks more slender due to not being totally black. But yours is still incredible. Just don't give him green irises, and we're good. I look forward to more info on Sonic Studio!

In my opinion, Sonic 3 & Knuckles had the best Sonic design. Sonic 1 looked too skinny and had a darker color scheme. Sonic 2 looked like Sonic 1 but is a little better with the colors. Sonic Mania just looks like a recolored and remade Sonic 1 and 2. (I love the Mania still). Sonic 3 & Knuckles had a mixture of darker colors and lighter ones. The eyes were better than the ones before because 1 & 2 were huge and S3&K fixes that. And it was more expressive. That last one is amazing, But I personally like S3&K the best.

So long as we're nitpicking, some notes on your version:
The spikes appear too uniform in their direction, so they don't create as much of an impression of speed, flow and aerodynamics. The fact you can't really see his back spike furthers this, he looks stiff rather than flowing.
Trying to mix together his 2 and 3 feet styles makes them look awkwardly wide and floppy. His left especially looks way too wide and his right sticks out forward like a floppy pancake. His socks look weirdly huge and together it makes the impression of being bottom-heavy and off-balance.
Having him look more towards the camera makes it easier to give defined facial features, but you have to remember the purpose of the sprite in the game is mostly to move forward. Looking towards the camera makes less of an impression that he's determined to keep moving, and would look worse unless changed for the running sprite, but changing the head when transitioning to running from standing might add unnecessary visual noise to a game centered around flowing movement.
I didn't agree with any of your impressions of the 3 sprite. His third spike doesn't look malformed, it looks like it's curving down and away, and you can see less of it because it's centered more on his head. Especially when viewed on a CRT at small size that lower dark pixel doesn't look like it's hanging off weird, it just creates the impression of a curve. Squint to approximate the effect and see what I mean. Similarly, the fourth spike looks like it's hanging off the bottom of his head nearer the center, not coming off his neck. His shoes, socks and gloves are designed to give more of a sense of 3D presence, and things like the shine on his shoes and the perspective you mentioned on his sock help accomplish this. It connects his in-game sprite more with the renders used on the title screens, special stages etc. He feels really solid and present within the stage. His eyes don't look too close together because that's the perspective you get from looking forward.
If you can't tell 3 is my favorite. Yours is great but not necessarily perfect for putting in a game.
Probably unfair competition but I like the sonic advance sprite much more. I love the way he looks there

I agree but its still good to see something different after playing 1 and 2.
