      Hi, I’m Alabama. A few weeks ago I cut grass to save grass clippings. Forgot about it in the mulch bag. A few weeks later I noticed smoke coming out, weirdly thinking it’s dust. It was warm & clipping’s broke down. I poured water all over prevent burning down my place. This happened before it got into my compost bin, still in mulch bag. ✌️

      @YellowDoorUrbanHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh I gotcha. Thanks for that tip. Hadn’t noticed it before. I get steam or smoke but I’ve never had that much. Glad to know it can happen and now I can be prepared. Not sure I ever have enough green at one time for that.

    With great power comes great responsibility. LOL Garden is looking winter ready. I side hustled in the late 80's and early 90's by recovering OAK pallets free from a Walgreens distribution center and converting them to patio furniture and firewood with an old Montgomery Ward's table saw that I got from a junk yard. Always on the hunt......

    • @YellowDoorUrbanHomestead
      @YellowDoorUrbanHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol yes it does! I’m so surprised at the growth so far. O wow! That’s cool. Pallet furniture is pretty awesome. Rewarding side hustle I’m sure. It’s amazing what you can do with someone else’s “junk”. I made some a few years ago but we had a horrible stray cat problem at the time and they were sleeping in it at night. I had to get rid of it lol

      @@YellowDoorUrbanHomestead You come across as very resourceful. the garden looks great and it's been very productive you have a right to be impressed. Where I live the stray cats are not the problem it's the raccoons they get into everything take what is not bolted down. between them and the ravens it can be kind of rough out in my garden.

    Excellent timing for me to come across your channel and this vid. Closing up my garden space for the season and I’m about to rebuild my leaf composting section. Thanks for the reminder about not composting leaves or grass clippings that may have pesticides, etc. in them. I have a turning composting bin I use for kitchen scraps because I had raccoon problems. I love your positive attitude and precious smile. Thank you for sharing. 😊

      Awesome! Happy to hear the video was helpful! My first question to anyone who says I can have their grass clippings and leaves is "do you spray" lol. The wildlife can be an issue. Luckily I've only had to fight mice for a short period of time. Awwww thank you very much! You're welcome!

    Shalom....I have questions😍🤣
    Pests in the pile? Do you get them?
    Food scraps...meat scraps or no meat scraps?
    When do you turn it to the other side?
    I'm bout ready to make a larger compost bin (bigger than my buckets) can I throw that in to start?
    Thanks for sharing....

    • @YellowDoorUrbanHomestead
      @YellowDoorUrbanHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi 👋🏾 when I had mice there was one or two that hung out over there. I think the chickens attracted them though not the compost. I do not put meat in mine because it’s way too close to my house lol. I have seen others that do. I turn it to the other side when it’s just about done. While it’s composting I keep it in the space. Since I only have two I have to clear one to turn it.
      Yay!! Yes you can throw compost that has already started to breakdown into a new pile.

      I think puppy droppings are good for fruit trees ect. Just not to put on anything you eat directly from the garden. With fruit trees it doesn’t actually touch the part you eat. But it also has to be broken down.

    You ever had rats? I have that problem... I saw about 6-7 small ones this spring hiding in a bin of mine before summer. When I discovered them while trying to clear the mess in the bin from moving into a new place, (cardboard boxes galore) they ran like roaches trying to jump up and out the bin and get away.
    I put out Poison last week (finally) cause they were eating my almost ALL my watermelon.(they didn't get all because they were no where near ripe) but those never fully grew anyway... My best tomatoes, my long beans, wanting to sink their teeth into my okra but the changed their mind mid bite. One was in my compost bin. Scared the bejeezus outta me when I opened it. Maybe the same one, or one of his brothers made a home next to my 2 raised beds outlined with roof shingles and bricks. They sure did make that their own roof!!!!
    I put the poison not in the trap, just set out the blocks for them to eat. I've buried 2 so far in my yard. One this past Friday.
    Anyway, what tips do u have? I've left the compost uncovered the past few weeks cause that also was a good home for one of them at least. It was very discouraging with them. I see poops on my brick window ledges (how they get up there anyway)
    - previous apartment dweller... AKA a fan of your channel even if I don't watch 'errythang' everytime I always appreciate every post I have seen.

      O my goodness! I feel your pain. Those little suckers will eat everything you have if you don’t get them outta there.
      I had mice for a few weeks this summer. After the humane method didn’t work I switched to snap traps. They worked beautifully and quickly.
      I’d suggest snap traps for quick removal. Peanut butter did best at attracting them. I hope this helps! Hopefully you will get them all soon. I do not believe the compost pile attracted them. They started out in the chicken area. Once they realized there was more to eat they ventured out. I never saw them in the compost but I saw them around it.

    LOVE HER HAIR!! Wish I could compost on a better scale. We have a turning bin, but not enough browns and clumpy! No leaves here 😩. I am using shredded paper😣. Thank you! O ok I get that. I have that issue with grass clippings in my yard. I have friends and family members keep their lawn clippings for me. You could try cardboard, paper towel rolls, straw and/or hay. A tote will work and it maybe easier for you because I can be smaller. O yeah I get the HOA situation. @@YellowDoorUrbanHomestead That's great news! The rodents and snakes are the only thing keeping me from composting! Every time I research it, I get the same response. I think the rodents are attracted to the food scrapes, and the snakes are attracted to the rodents. So if there is no food for rodents, then maybe this breaks the cycle. Please keep us posted. You sound experienced doing this so I may try the composting one day! Thanks again for a great video!
