Excellent Build. Purposeful - well done! I hope you will have one of your builds at GARR. It is nice to see our Land Rover friends warming up to the New Defender. Documenting your treks is a big part of that acceptance. Thank you!
I had a Defender for about 10 months. Having a 2021 Range Rover and having owned a 2018 Disco, I love the brand. However, when I got it, I was already using a modified 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road as my offroad use overlander and found that the Defender didn't meet my personal needs for offroad capability, and the independent suspension was a step in the wrong direction, for my personal needs. Just my personal needs, is all! It performed excellent, otherwise and was great fun! That is it! I have nothing bad to say about the Defender and was a bit sad to let it go! I would definitely consider one in the future and recommend them to everyone looking for a fun light off roader, with extremely comfortable daily drivability lol! I made fun memories in the one I had! I love seeing people using Defenders like this, so loved this video!
Great demo of what the Defender can do. I probably won’t mod mine to the extent you have but very cool to see. Keep making these, it’s good for all the naysayers to see.
Amazing man! Great footage and quite impressive how easy it just walks over those big obstacles. Very very nice, great driving. Keep it up, superb videos!
II have a 2004 Defender and I wouldn’t trade she for the new one, but to be fair the new model with bigger tires does have better off road drivability, unless you have done serious overhauling on yours.
i have a 95 RR Classic and took home a new D110 home back in March, only to see the V8 come out. I adore the new Defender and will be trading it in for a V8 90 ASAP
Snap although my RR is 1986. Also have a 110 V8 County Station Wagon. Still not convinced on the new Defender. How is it better than say a new Range Rover? My biggest concern is no adjustable heavy duty tow hitch for pin couplings.
@@codprawn tows 8200 pounds and seats up to 7. It wheeled up Hells Gate in 27 seconds while the classic RR and the 130 both struggled to climb it for 10+ minutes each
Very well done! I hope you will have zero issues despite the big mods. Purely because of trolls who are convinced Land Rovers are unreliable. Because I know the Defender is well engineered. And I also know there’s always a risk that some things might not be perfect yet, because after all it is an entirely new car. Best of luck, and have fun 🤩
It performs like a Champ! Mine has a 1.5 suspension lift with the 33’ BFG’s and Yes it can go most places a Jeepster goes! But a bit more comfortable! Loving it! Cheers
Wouldn’t be fair . Truthful me admittedly a Ford guy loves the looks of the new Defender but stack it up with a bad lands Sasquatch Bronco stock with 35’s and a stock Def would would be in serious trouble .
I'll still call it a Pretender for the lack of a ladder frame, but I cannot deny the incredible off-road capability of this crossover vehicle. Glad to see one of these at Moab, keep it up! 👍
Why would they build it on a ladder frame? A monocoque is stiffer. The only reason traditional off roaders use a ladder frame is because they are truck derived and share the platform with pickups etc.
Amazing vehicle, and amazing performance. I like your response ("it is a different kind of wheeling") to those who point out that it lifts wheels in areas that provoke much wheel articulation . The modern go anywhere side by sides do the same thing. Something to keep in mind is that if one wheel is in the air it is causing no resistance, and creating more traction for the wheels on the ground. Dune buggies proved this years ago by running the Rubicon trail at speeds that were deemed to fast and thus were banned.
This rigs setup is the WOW factor that Land Rover should have had for the Defender. The tyres and the rock sliders make it look very tuff. Best off road video of the defender capabilities I have seen. I hope you sent it to Land Rover for some tips.
@@cotrails8356 In case my comment is misunderstood by some. The new LR Defender is such a comfortable and beautiful vehicle to drive on road and off road and has some amazing engineering. It was a privilege to drive one on and off road. The interior design is so functional and rugged. I like the handle on the dashboard. I used that when off road as a passenger. Unfortunately though it seems hard to customise. Having to trim plastic to fit 35s should change. The fact that you have to take the front plastic skirt off to reach the recovery point is also disappointing for something that is supposed to represent king of the off road. I like the tip of just taking that off when going off road and it giving a better approach angle as well. The new Grenadier is becoming more attractive with all the bolt on accessory attachment points and easy to service in the field design. Easy. (so they say as it is not proven vehicle yet). Like a parallel universe of where the Defender could have gone. The point you made in this video or another of yours, about the Defender air suspension is great in that it is a different experience than front and rear live axles for off road. Not a worse experience. You just approach off roading in a different way of which many minds are not used to. So a bit controversial, maybe it is good to push the boundaries and warp the minds a bit. I hope it is not to costly to replace them when needed. I love how with air suspension you can lower the Defender for on road driving which is probably done most of the time. I wish LR would promote more of the off road design, for example in one review, I read that if the electronics fails it is design to fail in a good way so that the vehicle is still functional and you can get the vehicle home. Hey do you guys have the diesel version, say D300 available in US? we have Petrol P400 and Diesel D300, not sure if you would ever want more torque offroading for this gentle monster? Fantastic build and cool ride!
Thank you… our latest build is even better on 37’s! No diesel here in US, unfortunately!!! Wish we had the available. Building a 110 V8 on 37’s this spring👊
There is part of me that wants all the haters to watch what you did and finally admit that the L663 gets it done. The other part of me wants to keep it secret to bask in Bertha glory.
no hater said it is not capable, it is just overcomplicated with hi tech that make the repair in distant locations impossible, for weekends in the wild it seems a legit option.
I'm not a hater. This thing popped tires off the ground way too much. It looked unstable many times. Off roaders know that you need to keep all 4 on the ground. This is no longer a true off roader like the old version with solid axles and amazing articulation.
@@dobbins2550 So what are you saying here? That the L663 is not off road capable - or? It is superior to other off roaders if you consider payload, angles, ground clearance and wading depth combined. Furthermore, for long journeys and overlanding in desserts the independent air suspension makes for much better ride quality.
@@dobbins2550 nothing wrong with lifting tyres. Solid axles are old tech and no longer relevant in a modern vehicle. I support independent all round and always have. At the end of the video it looked like your front end was lower than the beginning of the video it was it because of the steep hill and the weight on the front?
We (Old Defender owners) love to hate this car, but we must be honest: with a lift and right tires it does have a lot of off-road capabilities. Nonetheless we still have a lot of good reasons to hate it.
I see the Big Bertha is taking some flak after being beaten trying V Notch. Strange that the people beating it up are fawning over the Bronco... the (only) one that didn't even try V Notch ;-) Looking forward to your take of the same jaunt.
It’s all good. The other two Jeeps didn’t make it either… the mud hole at the base added significant challenge to that obstacle. Truly believe Bug Bertha would have walked up it with dry rear tires. I’m positive the Bronco would not have made it up with the stock lift that day.
Solid axles of the Jeep have more flex. Defender has more tow capacity at 8200 vs 3500 lbs, more seating (up to 7), 300 Hp/ 400 hp/ and 518 Hp powertrain options… I guess the answer lies in what you will be using it for most often. I had a 5 hour drive this last weekend and I chose the Defender over the 392 for comfort on a long roadtrip …
I love it but just can't get over how it has practically zero suspension travel and lifts wheels on everything. The electronics do a great job of compensating for it.
@@cotrails8356 I still love it though, looks amazing with what you guys did to it! And its capabilities are very impressive. Happy wheeling! Looking forward to more videos! I'd like to get a 4 door with coil springs so I could put a proper lift and disconnecting swaybars. That would be perfect for me.
I agree with you. Was looking for this comment. I find it strange everyone is saying how awesome this is. I mean, its cool, you took an expensive Defender and made it off-road worthy. But damn, 0 travel, looks like its on rollerskates.

We had planned to build our V8 90 but it has been delayed at the factory due to parts availability. We are currently building another 110 and hope to have it done this month👍
This is a 2” subframe plus 2” lift rods. It was an early prototype and we were pushing to get it on the trail in early May. We would suggest the 4” and 1” or no lift rods depending on your preference👍
If I didn't have the Cherokee Trailhawk, I'd have the Defender.. I've found that one trick with 4-wheel independent suspension, at least for mine, based on ramp tests, is to run 4 psi lower in the rear than in the front. This will help keep all the tires on the ground as the rear often doesn't have enough weight to stay down. So let's say your right rear is off the ground, the lower pressure in the left rear that's still on the ground will allow it to compress more so that the right rear can come down some. This is limited to probably 1 inch of extra flex when you do this but hey, it's better than nothing. If you have already bottomed out your PSI... add 4 in the front. I'm serious. With my testing, I was best on corner travel with 26 in the front and 22 in the rear. When I had 22 on all 4 corners, it was worse. Science...
When I first saw the new defenders as a lover of the original, I figured that they would never come close to living up to the defender name… but having seen some of these they do alright, still like the originals more but I would buy one of the new ones
So few originals ever made it to the US, about 5k imported. We’re on 37’s with 5” lift on our latest build and running trails that 95% would probably never attempt. Really surprised everyone at the Great American River Rally in Moab with how well it performed! 27 seconds up Hells Gate while a built diesel 130 struggled some as did a Classic RR. They’re very capable… just depends on what you want. Plus, tows 8200 lbs 90 mph, seats 7, and has up to 518hp available👍
@@cotrails8356 it is a shame they didn’t bring a lot of bad defenders….. at least a few euro countries drive on the correct side of the road so I can still get one!

Landrover now that it has Concord the "POISIN SPIDER" The new name for your special edition should be called "THE POISON SPIDER EDITION" from Land rover. The only problem is they have to put the price point in range of the Bronco, Toyota land cruiser and jeep Rubicon... Make it a special edition for off road with V6 power and 35" tires $70,000 range... If Landrover makes that happen the orders will go through the roof... Make it for those folks that make over landing a life style choose that's right simple/Stupid ♡....
I certainly hear and appreciate your thoughts. Defender starts at $46.100 and can be comfortably equipped in the short $50’s. Rubicon’s are upper $50’s up to mid $80’s depending on configuration. Land Rover is intentionally upscale and their business model is focused on low production/ high end. Our intent here is to sure real world capability on trails 95%+ will never attempt in real life👍👍👍. We love the all night ew Bronco and our 392 Rubicon too each for different reasons…
Now I know why someone would take an $80,000 SUV off the road and into some sketchy situations, because they own the friggin dealership… LOL Not for mere mortals. Did Tommy and Roman from TFL Off-road put you up to this?
Saw a brief snippet from a TFL video where it is cut just as the Defender looks to take a tumble onto its right side trying to climb a huge rock formation. My question is as always WHY? Get a Razr or something if you want to go extreme.

finally someone uses a good off-road tire on a defender
Are the wheels original Land Rover? What tire does the car have?
Rims on this build are TuffAnts. 35” Toyo Open Country MT’s. Downsized calipers to fit the 18” wheels
I see the Big Bertha is taking some flak after being beaten trying V Notch.
Strange that the people beating it up are fawning over the Bronco... the (only) one that didn't even try V Notch ;-)
Looking forward to your take of the same jaunt.
It’s all good. The other two Jeeps didn’t make it either… the mud hole at the base added significant challenge to that obstacle. Truly believe Bug Bertha would have walked up it with dry rear tires. I’m positive the Bronco would not have made it up with the stock lift that day.
In terms of capability, which is better : the Wrangler or the Defender (both equally specced)?
Solid axles of the Jeep have more flex. Defender has more tow capacity at 8200 vs 3500 lbs, more seating (up to 7), 300 Hp/ 400 hp/ and 518 Hp powertrain options… I guess the answer lies in what you will be using it for most often. I had a 5 hour drive this last weekend and I chose the Defender over the 392 for comfort on a long roadtrip …
Impressive performance
What a beauty😍😍😍
I love it but just can't get over how it has practically zero suspension travel and lifts wheels on everything. The electronics do a great job of compensating for it.
It is a very different style of wheeling for sure, but Big Bertha tackles everything we throw at it👍
@@cotrails8356 I still love it though, looks amazing with what you guys did to it!
@@danielmembrillo6472 it definitely has to be extra hard on the drivetrain though
@@danielmembrillo6472 very consistent with 4Runner and Bronco. Yet it continues to wheel everything we throw it on…
Man I wish my dealerships here would step up their game and actually do stuff like this. You'd be embarrassed at what one of the salesmen showed me with what he thought was off road, litterly a gravel speed bump. Can you sell to Canadians?? 😆
Sorry, we cannot export. I’m 25k+ seat time in New Defender now and it continues to impress me!!! Hopefully we figure out how to stuff 37’s under the next build👍
I love your land rover I'm looking into purchasing one myself I don't know if you could give me a build list of the things you've added but I would like to copy whatever you've done . I will most likely buy the 110carpetian version Get all the packages they offer and then add on the stuff from your build
This one has:
2” J Auston Fab subframe lift
2” Lucky 8 lift rods
18” TuffAnt wheels
18” rear caliper conversion from Lucky 8
Lucky 8 Off Road sliders
35x12.5r18 Toyo Open Country MT’s
Some Trimming of front bumper and front of sliders
Man was the suspensions comfortable throughout
How did you get smaller rims without compromising brakes?
@lucky8offroad has a kit to downsize calipers with same PFS to clear 18’s
@@cotrails8356 is that with the P400 motor? I thought it needed those big calipers?
@@stephenroche1278 we downsized the calipers to get more sidewall and much better tires. Kit is from Lucky8 Off Road
Hello, what about the sway bars.. do you have them or have disconnect them ?
Wow I want to lift mine so bad now!
Do it!
What size? 😏
Is this white, or Hakuba Silver? (white currently isn't available in the X)
I recently seen a video of a G63 being shown off; much like this video.
How do the two compare? If you could?
Thanks 🙏🏻
Love how the G63 looks and on road. I have never seen a G Wagon Offroad so I don’t have any experience either way…
@@cotrails8356 thank you for getting back to me 🙏🏻.
I love their look as well. Until recently I just thought of them as "wealthy ppl status", but that one video definitely made me have a different perspective
How was the car setup for this trail? Low Range and Configurable TR?
We configured as: Locked rear. More wheel spin, and more throttle response.
What exhaust is on this? Stock ? Sounds grt
Took my new D110 to Moab as well, bone stock from the factory. Was such a blast!! You guys going to build out a 90? Would LOVE to see it, im actually trading my 110 in for V8 90, cannot wait
We had planned to build our V8 90 but it has been delayed at the factory due to parts availability. We are currently building another 110 and hope to have it done this month👍
Wow
That lift and tire makes it look 10 times better and more capable
Thats what I'm talking about!
Your videos are much better than the big buck JLR official videos..
Thank you… we’re enjoying pushing the Defender into uncharted territories!!! Stay tuned!
👍👍👍
Hi great video! 😬👍
What is the wheel & tyre combo
Makes, model & sizes please 👍👍
18” TuffAnt wheels
35x12.5r18 Toyo Open Country MT’s
4” of lift
Trimming
Relocated front coolers
Defender- it doesn't need road. It can make it's own.
is this the 4 or 6 inch subframe lift?
This is a 2” subframe plus 2” lift rods. It was an early prototype and we were pushing to get it on the trail in early May. We would suggest the 4” and 1” or no lift rods depending on your preference👍
Im surprised those tyres didn’t get debeaded.
Well done! It's great seeing the Defender on the real trails. It still angers me you can't fit 17" rims!
Agreed… more sidewall is always better!
@@cotrails8356 , I'm still jealous of the 110, and looking forward to more vids!
@@ForgottenWaypoints stay tuned. Editing next video next week
Are U using Petrol or Diesel while climbing?
Gas only here in the US…
Awesome video! Can you give a cost breakdown of all the mods?
Science...
We’ve removed rear swaybars on last two builds… woke the truck up significantly!
@@cotrails8356 nice !
for sure it has strong front axles !!!!
I have 2004 treg, not quit the same. Would love to have a battle between the new and old
When I first saw the new defenders as a lover of the original, I figured that they would never come close to living up to the defender name… but having seen some of these they do alright, still like the originals more but I would buy one of the new ones
Mi da l'impressione di essere mastodontica....eccessivamente grossa, ma è bello vederla in prove tecniche di questo tipo.
It gives me the impression of being mammoth .... excessively big, but it's nice to see it in technical tests of this type.
Is it lifted or stock ,, thanks!
4” lift and 35’s - downsized rear calipers to install 18’s. Check out our other videos, includes one about the latest build
Years wait for a stock one if I order one tomorrow…
LR, always a practically capable machine. My choice.
Is this one with rear diff lock?
Three builds ago on just 35’s. Yes. That one had a rear locker. This is before we started removing the rear sway bar
Now I know why someone would take an $80,000 SUV off the road and into some sketchy situations, because they own the friggin dealership… LOL Not for mere mortals. Did Tommy and Roman from TFL Off-road put you up to this?
Maybe, but those tires aren't standard. However, I do believe that it is advantageous Land Rover to offer an off road package for their namesake.
Saw a brief snippet from a TFL video where it is cut just as the Defender looks to take a tumble onto its right side trying to climb a huge rock formation. My question is as always WHY? Get a Razr or something if you want to go extreme.
Land rover should consider these chunky tyres and the lift as an option for its defender.
It looks phenomenal
Awesome video 👌👌👌
Thank you!!! We’re so happy with how Big Bertha turned out!
Super impressive that a monocoque vehicle can do this.
