  • *Edit: Toyotomi Hideyoshi was Kanpaku (Regent) to the emperor, not the Shogun.
Today I would like to explore the origins and decline of Japan's first Nihonmachi (Japanese Village) located in modern-day Thailand.

It's a fascinating era for sure, I often wonder how different Japanese and South East Asian history could've turned out had Tokugawa supported Japanese merchants and ronin going overseas instead of suppressing them. Hopefully this doesn't come across as to pedantic but I have to make 2 corrections: 1) Sakoku wasn't the name of any actual Japanese policy, it was originally coined by anti-Shogunate interlectuals in the 19th century. 2) Hideyoshi was never Shogun, his title for most of his rule was Kanpaku or regent (of the emperor).

Thanks for the correction. Sometimes world historians tend to be big picture and can be skimpy on the finer details, myself included. But those excellent points of clarification.

King Prasatthong was the former chancellor of the military affair, the highest military rank while Yamada Nagamasa was the head of royal guards, the second most powerful military rank. Initially, they cooperated to depose sons of King Songtham. Yamada disliked the way King Prasatthong ascended the throne because changing dynasty was unacceptable in Japanese eyes. Hence, King Prasatthong appoint him to rule Ligor faraway in the south before sending an agent to poison him. After his death, his son became the governor there.

    2 minor clarifications
    1. Hideyoshi never was a shogun due tho his low birth and not being a descendant of Minamoto or Taira, he was adopted into Fujiwara when rose to power and although there were Fujiwara descendant Shoguns, still most of them descend from the Minamoto. Instead he was a Kanpaku, aka Imperial Regent.
    2. Ronin ARE Samurai, but with minor caveat that ronin are the unemployed samurai and thus using either of the terms one time would work rather than to mention both.

Thanks for the clarification. I plan to make a follow up video about the Japanese in Angkor, so I'll keep these points in mind.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was never allowed to assume the position of Shogun. The highest position he ever got to acquire was Kampaku/Kanpaku.

I apologize for the mix up. He was indeed Kanpaku

Funny enough, a good friend of mine who is ethnic Pa-O from Mynamar, but living in Bangkok as I do, visted Ayutthaya with a friend of hers. While I've been there many times, both for pleasure and for work, I was surprsed when she posted photos of a Japanese memorial shrine, as I wasn't aware of one before and didn't know what significance it had in Ayutthaya. This must have been where she was.
Incidentally, the accent of the name Ayutthaya should fall on the second syllable, not the third. More like a-YUT-ta-yah. There is no written vowel in the third syllable, just the inherent vowel of the Thai abugeda writing system, so it is not extended, while the final syllable is.

Thanks for watching! Many Dai people fled from China to Ayutthaya in the 13th century during the Mongol invasion of China and Vietnam. I'll be posting a separate video addressing a related topic on that soon.

@@storiesinhistory Thai people have gradually migrated to Southeast Asia since the late Tang dynasty. If you want to make a video about Mongol invasion, you need to do a lot more research.

9:54 It's because of Yamada royalty to the previous king of Ayutthaya he dared to stand up against the new king that came from coup d'etat and he paid his own life.
