I think this was the first pre-modern event in Japanese history I ever learned about. Growing up, I had a children's history book called *Stories of Freedom* that had a chapter on the 2nd Mongolian invasion alongside events like the Battle of Marathon, Joan of Arc's campaign, and the Battle of Isandlwana. Thanks for the elaboration Shogo!
Watching this as a Mongolian is really interesting. For me at least, our school curriculum doesn't really focus on the impacts of how certain invasions changed countries in the long term, so watching this is a real eye-opener. Thanks Shogo!

Wonderful video! I love the history. I watched a new video from the shogunate today too. Thank you for asking him to collaborate on those videos earlier this week. I was able to enjoy Japan history today!!❤
The shipwrecks found somewhat far from where the second invasion took place could be explained by the storm hypothesis if said ship just drifted, being pushed away by winds and waves, and then sunk. Storms were a problem even with modern european warfleets, like the Spanish Armada, the english Counterarmada and so on. Even the english fleet from 1805 blockading Spain during the Napoleonic Wars was suffering from the bad weather, and if the french admiral didn't forced the Spanish to engage the english in Trafalgar (and then not even participate, he just remained behind doing nothing, such a prick) they would had to undo the blockade and get back to England.
0:35 On that note, Shogo. If you’re willing to look passed historical and minor cultural inaccuracy, I think you might find Ghost of Tsushima to be one heck of a game. It’s one of my favorites, honestly.
I’m so sorry for your pain. You are amazing for continuing making your video. I see the whiteness of your fingertips and hope you are finding relief from it especially in this cold winter.
Just found your channel recently. Can't wait to show my fiancé. We have dreams of traveling to Japan someday. My favorite author is Haruki Murakami, I would be interested in hearing about some of your favorite Japanese authors.
Greetings from Mongolia, not sure if my ancestors were there in invasion of Japan but my great grandfather participated in battle of Khalkin gol against Japanese invading army in 1939. But I love Japanese culture and currently working in a Japanese company. Very nice video, thanks.
I wasn't aware there was debate on the impact of "kamikaze" (in the context of a great storm) on the Mongol fleet. Japan is certainly known for strong storms like typhoons, and any naval force could be wrecked by such storms. It's also an important lesson to learn that human actions are easily dashed by the physics of the world we inhabit (a Shinto lesson to respect the world rather than merely exploit it). This doesn't negate the historical actions of two nations and the complexities between them, nor does it reek of propaganda like so many militaristic legends. P.S. I think Frank Herbert would have something to say about Kokka Shinto... Something decidedly negative.
Hey man, just found your channel and subbed a moment ago. Really hope you reach 1m subs sooner than anticipated. I just wanna ask if there is any english translation of the book you mentioned in the video about Bushido as a root of modern social problem available anywhere. Thanks in advance.
Kinda sucks to learn that the Kamikaze storms that wrecked the Mongols might not have actually happened from a historical meteorological perspective, in addition to being used as propaganda in Imperial Japanese schools. But it’s nice to know that we’re still finding out new things about the ancient invasion, so there’s always something new waiting to be discovered!
Actually there are historical account buy Marco Polo of the Kamikaze in the West... But it's just ships colliding due to natural phenomenon. (English wikipedia)
Actually there were a Japanese documentary in youtube about it and they found some Mongolian ship wrecks and anchors that were all facing in one direction, also most of the ship were riverboat (not able stand up to an typhoon) leading to a conclusion that there were a storm involvement.
It's amazing how can shogo can make and provide us with this much information in such a short span of time... The work and dedication he exerts are unbelievably amazing. 👍

Interesting perspective expertly presented. I don't think it's always practical to make a sweeping statement that you're against all violence however. Your own presentation shows that sometimes you are subject to an external threat that is not of your making. What do you do then? Surrender or fight? This is a difficult subject I imagine, for Japanese to even think about.
I really appreciate how Shogo studies Japan's involvement in WW2 and doesn't sugarcoat or glorify the madness that occurred. You should check definitely check out Mark Felton's "WW2 Japanese Military Brutality Explained." It goes far more in depth on the average Japanese soldier's mind and how culture, history societal pressure and training turned men into absolute monsters.
Apparently a few months after WW2 ended a huge storm happened & could have effected a potential Allied invasion planned. I knew about Kamikaze through documentaries from both Allied & Imperial pilots perspectives.
It's as if the gods were super pissed at Japan being so incompetent that they actually let the failed Yuan Dynasty invasions be avenged It's true that the Showa Emperor more or less indirectly sabotaged Operation Downfall (not to be confused with the German movie about Hitler in his bunker under Berlin) by ending WW2 before it came to fruition. Otherwise the US marines were gonna taste whatever the Mongolians tasted
That was a nice piece of history ❤ Thank You, sir! P.s. Would You mind making a video covering Japanese witchcraft, if You have any info on it of course. I think ppl would love it ☯️
Hellow shogo, could I ask you for a video? About how the portuguese arrival influenced the Japanese culture. I would be so happy and grateful. Because I am Portuguese.
Like my ancient Celtic ancestors, one-on-one combat was present. This, I learned long ago, was when ancient England was named Alban. An influential factor was that tribes were small. It made perfect sense that the king of each tribe would step forward. Three days of fighting could take place. This typically began by each tribe's king throwing spears at each other across a narrow tributary into a river or a stdream of water as a boundary. The kings also held shields during this first day. I forget the details of the second day. However, on the third day, the tribal kings finally waded into the water and fought with swords - extremely valuable and rare that long ago. * bows with gratitude for your hard work and teaching * Domo Arigato Gozaimasu.

So if there wasn't any "kamikaze" storm to destroy the mongol fleets, maybe the samurai successfully defended against the second mongol invasion all on their own, without "divine intervention"?
The (sinoboo) Mongolians couldn't even land on the hakata beachheads and the samurai were actively boarding ships and murdering them. I've heard the typhoon came just as the fleet decided to GTFO hakata

@@eagle162 I've heard that the samurais weren't even complaining about getting little to no rewards. They were as convinced that divine intervention granted them victory But as soon as the bakufu decided to confiscate some of the granted lands to be given to other warriors and religious institutions (Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples), that was when samurais started to get rebellious
I don't think the Mongol attacks happened because of the shogun ignoring their letters. It's more of second nature for the Mongol's to invade any part of Asia
Highly interesting, I was not aware of the background of the word kamikaze. One important factor to consider regarding the suicide plane tactics of WW2 is, however, that if one looks at the statistics and logistics of warfare, kamikaze attacks were much more efficient than regular bombing/torpedo runs. Military History Visualized has a video explaining this thoroughly. Basically, a regular bombing run would lose, on average, a higher percentage of planes for less damage than an attack by a kamikaze squadron could inflict with an average loss rate that was similar or lower. Given that an inexperienced pilot as well as outdated aircraft could be used (nullifying Japanese lack of manpower and industry) it was, in the most horrifying way, the most logical conclusion if one does not care for the lives of the men killed. Just a little addendum I thought I as a history and military strategy nerd could provide!
That kamikaze thing against mongols was in Finnish school books too, so maybe it's more wide spread. Like the Roman Pilum usage to getting bent and rendering enemy shields useless is just bonkers.

The Mongolians had equally skilled and battle hardened troops that had faced and conquered many Eurasian nations' troops. No matter how skilled the Samurai, fighting skilled opponents when that outnumbered is an almost impossible task unless you have vastly superior weapons or are heavily fortified.
The Japanese side actually won the battles in both invasions, there is no mention of a storm in first Invasion second one yes but only after battles occurred in face the Damage Done may have been exaggerated and receive a little help( burn wood has been found on ships possibly done by the Japanese side), the Mongols even complimented their enemies. Hmmm I can't wait to watch this, I thought the typhoons blew them out both times 😂 is that why 神风 because they finally mastered the wind and took power 😂
Can you just imagine the mongols standing on their horses while rushing towards some people and shooting them with their bows? Yeah. That would be cool and terrifying if it happened again
@@ChromeMan04 oh yeah. We are on the 1200-1500 here. And btw about the mongols being kicked out by the afghans. I mean who didn't (except alexander the great).

Can you just imagine the mongols standing on their horses while rushing towards some people and shooting them with their bows? Yeah. That would be cool and terrifying if it happened again
Mongols are overrated they got whopped by Afghans, Vietnamese, poles and many other people.
@@ChromeMan04 you forgot the rus I think. Didn't they also pushed them back?
@@lingoteen Not really, Russia was conquered by the Golden Horde.
@@ChromeMan04 oh yeah. We are on the 1200-1500 here. And btw about the mongols being kicked out by the afghans. I mean who didn't (except alexander the great).

Shogo sensei, regarding WW2 kamikaze, apparently someone else was in on it
And that someone else was the daisan doitsu teikoku; the third Reich. They weren't as intense as their Japanese friends on suicide attacks, but surely sensei hasn't heard of the *Leonidas Squadron* nor the *sonderkommando Elbe*
